A multidimensional analogue of the arcsine law for the number of positive terms in a random walk
Published • View PublicationBIB
Consider a random walk $S_i= ξ_1+\ldots+ξ_i$, $i\in\mathbb N$, whose increments $ξ_1,ξ_2,\ldots$ are independent identically distributed random vectors in $\mathbb R^d$ such that $ξ_1$ has the same law as $-ξ_1$ and $\mathbb P[ξ_1\in H] = 0$ for every affine hyperplane $H\subset \mathbb R^d$. Our main result is the distribution-free formula $$ \mathbb E \left[\sum_{1\leq i_1 < \ldots < i_k\leq n} 1_{\{0\notin \text{conv}(S_{i_1},\ldots, S_{i_k})\}}\right] = 2 \binom n k \frac {B(k, d-1) + B(k, d-3) +\ldots} {2^k k!}, $$ where the $B(k,j)$'s are defined by their generating function $$ (t+1) (t+3) \ldots (t+2k-1) = \sum_{j=0}^{k} B(k,j) t^j. $$ The expected number of $k$-tuples above admits the following geometric interpretation: it is the expected number of $k$-dimensional faces of a randomly and uniformly sampled open Weyl chamber of type $B_n$ that are not intersected by a generic linear subspace $L\subset \mathbb R^n$ of codimension $d$. The case $d=1$ turns out to be equivalent to the classical discrete arcsine law for the number of positive terms in a one-dimensional random walk with continuous symmetric distribution of increments. We also prove similar results for random bridges with no central symmetry assumption required.

Central measures on multiplicative graphs, representations of Lie algebras and weight polytopes
To each finite-dimensional representation of a simple Lie algebra is associated a multiplicative graph in the sense of Kerov and Vershik definedfrom the decomposition of its tensor powers into irreducible components. The conditioning of naturalrandom Littelmann paths to stay in their corresponding Weyl chamber is thencontrolled by central measures on this type of graphs. Using the K-theory of associated C*-algebras, Handelman established a homeomorphism between the set of central measures on these multiplicative graphs and the weight polytope of theunderlying representation. In the present paper, we make explicit this homeomorphism independently of Handelman's results by using Littelmann's path model. As a by-product we also get an explicit parametrization of theweight polytope in terms of drifts of random Littelmann paths. This explicit parametrization yields a complete description of harmonic and c-harmonic functions for this Littelmann paths model.
Incidence Geometry in a Weyl Chamber II: $SL_n$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the polyhedral geometry of the hyperplanes orthogonal to the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of $sl_n$ inside the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that enumerate the flats and the faces of a fixed dimension. In addition, we describe the extreme rays of the incidence geometry and classify simplicial faces. From the perspective of supersymmetric gauge theories with 8 supercharges in five dimensional spacetime, the poset of flats is isomorphic to the network of mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches. On the other hand, the poset of faces is conjectured to be isomorphic to the network of crepant partial resolutions of an elliptic fibration with gauge algebra $sl_n$ and "matter representation" given by the sum of the first two fundamental representations.
Convex hulls of random walks, hyperplane arrangements, and Weyl chambers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit formula for the probability that the convex hull of an $n$-step random walk in $R^d$ does not contain the origin, under the assumption that the distribution of increments of the walk is centrally symmetric and puts no mass on affine hyperplanes. This extends the formula by Sparre Andersen (1949) for the probability that such random walk in dimension one stays positive. Our result is distribution-free, that is, the probability does not depend on the distribution of increments. This probabilistic problem is shown to be equivalent to either of the two geometric ones: 1) Find the number of Weyl chambers of type $B_n$ intersected by a generic linear subspace of $R^n$ of codimension $d$; 2) Find the conic intrinsic volumes of a Weyl chamber of type $B_n$. We solve the first geometric problem using the theory of hyperplane arrangements. A by-product of our method is a new simple proof of the general formula by Klivans and Swartz (2011) relating the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of a linear hyperplane arrangement to the conic intrinsic volumes of the chambers constituting its complement. We obtain analogous distribution-free results for Weyl chambers of type $A_{n-1}$ (yielding the probability of absorption of the origin by the convex hull of a generic random walk bridge), type $D_n$, and direct products of Weyl chambers (yielding the absorption probability for the joint convex hull of several random walks or bridges). The simplest case of products of the form $B_1\times \dots \times B_1$ recovers the Wendel formula (1962) for the probability that the convex hull of an i.i.d. multidimensional sample chosen from a centrally symmetric distribution does not contain the origin. We also give an asymptotic analysis of the obtained absorption probabilities as $n \to \infty$, in both cases of fixed and increasing dimension $d$.
Incidence Geometry in a Weyl Chamber I: $GL_n$

We study the central hyperplane arrangement whose hyperplanes are the vanishing loci of the weights of the first and the second fundamental representations of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ restricted to the dual fundamental Weyl chamber. We obtain generating functions that count flats and faces of a given dimension. This counting is interpreted in physics as the enumeration of the phases of the Coulomb and mixed Coulomb-Higgs branches of a five dimensional gauge theory with 8 supercharges in presence of hypermultiplets transforming in the fundamental and antisymmetric representation of a U(n) gauge group as described by the Intriligator-Morrison-Seiberg superpotential.

Non-Archimedean Whittaker functions as characters: a probabilistic approach to the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula
Published in Int Math Res Notices (2016) • View PublicationBIB
For a reductive group $G$ over a non-Archimedean local field (e.g $GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$ ), Jacquet's Whittaker function is essentially proportional to a character of an irreducible representation of the Langlands dual group $G^\vee( \mathbb{C} )$ ( a Schur function if $G = GL_n( \mathbb{Q}_p )$). We propose a probabilistic approach to this claim, known as the Shintani-Casselman-Shalika formula, when the group $G$ has at least one minuscule cocharacter in the coweight lattice. Our presentation goes along the following lines. Thanks to a minuscule random walk $W^{(z)}$ on the coweight lattice and a related random walk on the Borel subgroup, we establish a Poisson kernel formula for the non-Archimedean Whittaker function. The expression and its ingredients are similar to the one previously obtained by the author in the Archimedean case. A simple manipulation reduces the problem to evaluating the probability of $W^{(z)}$ never exiting the Weyl chamber. Then, an implementation of the reflection principle forces the appearance of the Weyl character formula and therefore retrieves characters of $G^\vee\left( \mathbb{C} \right)$. The construction of the random walk on the Borel subgroup requires some care. It is extracted from a spherical random walk whose increments have a distribution that can be understood as elements from the spherical Hecke algebra.

Harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs and inverse Pitman transform on infinite random paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and characterize central probability distributions on Littelmann paths. Next we establish a law of large numbers and a central limit theorem for the generalized Pitmann transform. We then study harmonic functions on multiplicative graphs defined from the tensor powers of finite-dimensional Lie algebras representations. Finally, we show there exists an inverse of the generalized Pitman transform defined almost surely on the set of infinite paths remaining in the Weyl chamber and explain how it can be computed.

Young diagrams and intersection numbers for toric manifolds associated with Weyl chambers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study intersection numbers of invariant divisors in the toric manifold associated with the fan determined by the collection of Weyl chambers for each root system of classical type and of exceptional type $G_2$. We give a combinatorial formula for intersection numbers of certain subvarieties which are naturally indexed by elements of the Weyl group. These numbers describe the ring structure of the cohomology of the toric manifold.

Asymptotic lattice path enumeration using diagonals
Published • View PublicationBIB
This work presents new asymptotic formulas for family of walks in Weyl chambers. The models studied here are defined by step sets which exhibit many symmetries and are restricted to the first orthant. The resulting formulas are very straightforward: the exponential growth of each model is given by the number of steps, while the sub-exponential growth depends only on the dimension of the underlying lattice and the number of steps moving forward in each coordinate. These expressions are derived by analyzing the singular variety of a multivariate rational function whose diagonal counts the lattice paths in question. Additionally, we show how to compute subdominant growth for these models, and how to determine first order asymptotics for excursions.

Conditioned random walks from Kac-Moody root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Random paths are time continuous interpolations of random walks. By using Littelmann path model, we associate to each irreducible highest weight module of a Kac Moody algebra g a random path W. Under suitable hypotheses, we make explicit the probability of the event E: W never exits the Weyl chamber of g. We then give the law of the random walk defined by W conditioned by the event E and proves this law can be recovered by applying to W the generalized Pitmann transform introduced by Biane, Bougerol and O'Connell. This generalizes the main results of [10] and [16] to Kac Moody root systems and arbitrary highest weight modules. Moreover, we use here a completely new approach by exploiting the symmetry of our construction under the action of the Weyl group of g rather than renewal theory and Doob's theorem on Martin kernels.

Normality and quadraticity for special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that special ample line bundles on toric varieties arising from root systems are projectively normal. Here the maximal cones of the fans correspond to the Weyl chambers, and special means that the bundle is torus-equivariant such that the character of the line bundle that corresponds to a maximal Weyl chamber is dominant with respect to that chamber. Moreover, we prove that the associated semigroup rings are quadratic.

Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties associated to additive affine Weyl group elements
Published in J. Algebra 349, p. 63-79, 2012 • Search Publication
Affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties can be thought of as affine analogs of classical Deligne-Lusztig varieties, or Frobenius-twisted analogs of Schubert varieties. We provide a method for proving a non-emptiness statement for affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties inside the affine flag variety associated to affine Weyl group elements satisfying a certain length additivity hypothesis. In particular, we prove that non-emptiness holds whenever it is conjectured to do so for alcoves in the shrunken dominant Weyl chamber, providing a partial converse to the emptiness results of Goertz, Haines, Kottwitz, and Reuman. Our technique involves the work of Geck and Pfeiffer on cuspidal conjugacy classes, in addition to an analysis of the combinatorics of certain fully commutative elements in the finite Weyl group.

A remark on asymptotic enumeration of highest weights in tensor powers of a representation
Published in Bulletin of the Iranian Mathematical Society. Vol. 41, No. 3 (2015), p. 639-646 • Search Publication
We consider the semigroup S of highest weights appearing in tensor powers V^k of a finite dimensional representation V of a connected reductive group. We describe the cone generated by S as the cone over the weight polytope of V intersected with the positive Weyl chamber. From this we get a description for the asymptotic of the number of highest weights appearing in V^k in terms of the volume of this polytope.

Asymptotics for the number of walks in a Weyl chamber of type B
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider lattice walks in $\R^k$ confined to the region $0<x_1<x_2...<x_k$ with fixed (but arbitrary) starting and end points. The walks are required to be "reflectable", that is, we assume that the number of paths can be counted using the reflection principle. The main results are asymptotic formulas for the total number of walks of length $n$ with either a fixed or a free end point for a general class of walks as $n$ tends to infinity. As applications, we find the asymptotics for the number of $k$-non-crossing tangled diagrams on the set $\{1,2,...,n\}$ as $n$ tends to infinity, and asymptotics for the number of $k$-vicious walkers subject to a wall restriction in the random turns model as well as in the lock step model. Asymptotics for all of these objects were either known only for certain special cases, or have only been partially determined or were completely unknown.

Determinant Formulas Relating to Tableaux of Bounded Height
Published • View PublicationBIB
Chen et al. recently established bijections for $(d+1)$-noncrossing/ nonnesting matchings, oscillating tableaux of bounded height $d$, and oscillating lattice walks in the $d$-dimensional Weyl chamber. Stanley asked what is the total number of such tableaux of length $n$ and of any shape. We find a determinant formula for the exponential generating function. The same idea applies to prove Gessel's remarkable determinant formula for permutations with bounded length of increasing subsequences. We also give short algebraic derivations for some results of the reflection principle.

A path-transformation for random walks and the Robinson-Schensted correspondence
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 355 (2003) 3669--3697. • View PublicationBIB
In [O'Connell and Yor (2002)] a path-transformation G was introduced with the property that, for X belonging to a certain class of random walks on the integer lattice, the transformed walk G(X) has the same law as that of the original walk conditioned never to exit a type-A Weyl chamber. In this paper, we show that G is closely related to the Robinson-Schensted algorithm, and use this connection to give a new proof of the above representation theorem. The new proof is valid for a larger class of random walks and yields additional information about the joint law of X and G(X). The corresponding results for the Brownian model are recovered by Donsker's theorem. These are connected with Hermitian Brownian motion and the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble of random matrix theory. The connection we make between the path-transformation G and the RS algorithm also provides a new formula and interpretation for the latter. This can be used to study properties of the RS algorithm and, moreover, extends easily to a continuous setting.

Finite Dimensional Representations of Quantum Affine Algebras
We investigate the characters of some finite-dimensional representations of the quantum affine algebras $U_q(\hat{g})$ using the action of the copy of $U_q(g)$ embedded in it. First, we present an efficient algorithm for computing the Kirillov-Reshetikhin conjectured formula for these characters when $g$ is simply-laced. This replaces the original formulation, in terms of "rigged configurations", with one based on polygonal paths in the Weyl chamber. It also gives a new algorithm for decomposing a tensor product of any number of representations of $sl(n)$ corresponding to rectangular Young diagrams, in a way symmetric in all the factors. This section is an expanded version of q-alg/9611032 . Second, we study a generalization of certain remarkable quadratic relations that hold among characters of $sl(n)$ (the "discrete Hirota relations") whose solutions seem to be characters of quantum affine algebras. We use show that these relations have a unique solution over characters of $U_q(g)$.

Characteristic and Ehrhart polynomials
Published in J. Algebraic Combin. 7 (1998), 115-126 • View PublicationBIB
Let A be a subspace arrangement and let chi(A,t) be the characteristic polynomial of its intersection lattice L(A). We show that if the subspaces in A are taken from L(B_n), where B_n is the type B Weyl arrangement, then chi(A,t) counts a certain set of lattice points. One can use this result to study the partial factorization of chi(A,t) over the integers and the coefficients of its expansion in various bases for the polynomial ring R[t]. Next we prove that the characteristic polynomial of any Weyl hyperplane arrangement can be expressed in terms of an Ehrhart quasi-polynomial for its affine Weyl chamber. Note that our first result deals with all subspace arrangements embedded in B_n while the second deals with all finite Weyl groups but only their hyperplane arrangements.
