In 1980, Edelman defined a poset on objects called the noncrossing 2-partitions. They are closely related with noncrossing partitions and parking functions. To some extent, his definition is a precursor of the parking space theory, in the framework of finite reflection groups. We present some enumerative and topological properties of this poset. In particular, we get a formula counting certain chains, that encompasses formulas for Whitney numbers (of both kinds). We prove shellability of the poset, and compute its homology as a representation of the symmetric group. We moreover link it with two well-known polytopes : the associahedron and the permutohedron.

In this paper, a q-analogue of r-Whitney-Lah numbers, also known as (q,r)-Whitney-Lah number, denoted by $L_{m,r}[n,k]_q$ is defined using the triangular recurrence relation. Several fundamental properties for the q-analogue are established such as vertical and horizontal recurrence relations, horizontal and exponential generating functions. Moreover, an explicit formula for (q,r)-Whitney-Lah number is derived using the concept of q-difference operator, particularly, the q-analogue of Newton's Interpolation Formula (the umbral version of Taylor series). Furthermore, an explicit formula for the first form (q,r)-Dowling numbers is obtained which is expressed in terms of (q,r)-Whitney-Lah numbers and (q,r)-Whitney numbers of the second kind.

Many combinatorial numbers can be placed in the following generalized triangular array $[T_{n,k}]_{n,k\ge 0}$ satisfying the recurrence relation: \begin{equation*} T_{n,k}=λ(a_0n+a_1k+a_2)T_{n-1,k}+(b_0n+b_1k+b_2)T_{n-1,k-1}+\frac{d(da_1-b_1)}λ(n-k+1)T_{n-1,k-2} \end{equation*} with $T_{0,0}=1$ and $T_{n,k}=0$ unless $0\le k\le n$ for suitable $a_0,a_1,a_2,b_0,b_1,b_2,d$ and $λ$. For $n\geq0$, denote by $T_n(q)$ the generating function of the $n$-th row. In this paper, we develop various criteria for $\textbf{x}$-Stieltjes moment property and $3$-$\textbf{x}$-log-convexity of $T_n(q)$ based on the Jacobi continued fraction expression of $\sum_{n\geq0}T_n(q)t^n$, where $\textbf{x}$ is a set of indeterminates consisting of $q$ and those parameters occurring in the recurrence relation. With the help of a criterion of Wang and Zhu [Adv. in Appl. Math. (2016)], we show that the corresponding linear transformation of $T_{n,k}$ preserves Stieltjes moment properties of sequences. Finally, we present some related examples including factorial numbers, Whitney numbers, Stirling permutations, minimax trees and peak statistics.
Whitney Numbers of Combinatorial Geometries and Higher-Weight Dowling Lattices

We study the Whitney numbers of the first kind of combinatorial geometries. The first part of the paper is devoted to general results relating the Möbius functions of nested atomistic lattices, extending some classical theorems in combinatorics. We then specialize our results to restriction geometries, i.e., to sublattices $\mathcal{L}(A)$ of the lattice of subspaces of an $\mathbb{F}_q$-linear space, say $X$, generated by a set of projective points $A \subseteq X$. In this context, we introduce the notion of subspace distribution, and show that partial knowledge of the latter is equivalent to partial knowledge of the Whitney numbers of $\mathcal{L}(A)$. This refines a classical result by Dowling.
The most interesting applications of our results are to be seen in the theory of higher-weight Dowling lattices (HWDLs), to which we dovote the second and most substantive part of the paper. These combinatorial geometries were introduced by Dowling in 1971 in connection with fundamental problems in coding theory, and further studied, among others, by Zaslavsky, Bonin, Kung, Brini, and Games. To date, still very little is known about these lattices. In particular, the techniques to compute their Whitney numbers have not been discovered yet. In this paper, we bring forward the theory of HWDLs, computing their Whitney numbers for new infinite families of parameters. Moreover, we show that the second Whitney numbers of HWDLs are polynomials in the underlying field size $q$, whose coefficients are expressions involving the Bernoulli numbers. This reveals a new link between combinatorics, coding theory, and number theory. We also study the asymptotics of the Whitney numbers of HWDLs as the field size grows, giving upper bounds and exact estimates in some cases. In passing, we obtain new results on the density functions of error-correcting codes.

A $q$-analogue of $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind, denoted by $W_{m,r}[n,k]_q$, is defined by means of a triangular recurrence relation. In this paper, several fundamental properties for the $q$-analogue are established including other forms of recurrence relations, explicit formulas and generating functions. Moreover, a kind of Hankel transform for $W_{m,r}[n,k]_q$ is obtained.
Whitney Numbers for Poset Cones
Hyperplane arrangements dissect $\mathbb{R}^n$ into connected components called chambers, and a well-known theorem of Zaslavsky counts chambers as a sum of nonnegative integers called Whitney numbers of the first kind. His theorem generalizes to count chambers within any cone defined as the intersection of a collection of halfspaces from the arrangement, leading to a notion of Whitney numbers for each cone. This paper focuses on cones within the braid arrangement, consisting of the reflecting hyperplanes $x_i=x_j$ inside $\mathbb{R}^n$ for the symmetric group, thought of as the type $A_{n-1}$ reflection group. Here cones correspond to posets, chambers within the cone correspond to linear extensions of the poset, and the Whitney numbers of the cone interestingly refine the number of linear extensions of the poset. We interpret this refinement for all posets as counting linear extensions according to a statistic that generalizes the number of left-to-right maxima of a permutation. When the poset is a disjoint union of chains, we interpret this refinement differently, using Foata's theory of cycle decomposition for multiset permutations, leading to a simple generating function compiling these Whitney numbers.
Chromatic Polynomial and Heaps of Pieces
Stanley in his paper [Stanley, Richard P.: Acyclic orientations of graphs In: Discrete Mathematics 5 (1973), Nr. 2, S. 171-178.] provided interpretations of the chromatic polynomial when it is substituted with negative integers. Greene and Zaslavsky interpreted the coefficients of the chromatic polynomial in [Greene, Curtis ; Zaslavsky, Thomas: On the interpretation of Whitney numbers through arrangements of hyperplanes, zonotopes, non-Radon partitions, and orientations of graphs. In: Transactions of the American Mathematical Society 280 (1983), jan, Nr. 1, S. 97-97.]. We shall develop an involution on factorisations of heaps of pieces and using this involution, we shall provide bijective proofs to results from both the papers.

We define the Bernoulli polynomials with a $q$ parameter in terms of $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind. Some algebraic properties and combinatorial identities of these polynomials are given. Also, we obtain several relations between the Cauchy and Bernoulli polynomials with a $q$ parameter in terms of $r$-Whitney numbers of both kinds.
Explicit Formulae of Cauchy Polynomials with a $q$ Parameter in Terms of $r$-Whitney Numbers
The Cauchy polynomials with a $q$ parameter were recently defined, and several arithmetical properties were studied. In this paper, we establish explicit formulae for computing the Cauchy polynomials with a $q$ parameter in terms of $r$-Whitney numbers of the first kind. We also obtain several properties and combinatorial identities.
The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets.
As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling.
Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

Restricted Whitney numbers of the first kind appear in the combinatorial recursion for the matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. In the special case of braid matroids (the matroid associated to the partition lattice, the complete graph, the type A Coxeter arrangement and the symmetric group) these restricted Whitney numbers are Stirling numbers of the first kind. We use this observation to obtain a formula for the coefficients of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for braid matroids in terms of sums of products of Stirling numbers of the first kind. This results in new identities between Stirling numbers of the first kind and Stirling numbers of the second kind, as well as a non-recursive formula for the braid matroid Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials.

In this paper, a generalized recurrence relation for the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind is derived using as framework the operators $X$ and $D$ satisfying the commutation relation $DX-XD=1$. This recurrence relation is shown to be a generalization of the well-known Spivey's Bell number. Moreover, several other identities generalizing Spivey's Bell number formula are obtained.

The $(q,r)$-Whitney numbers were recently defined in terms of the $q$-Boson operators, and several combinatorial properties which appear to be $q$-analogues of similar properties were studied. In this paper, we obtain elementary and complete symmetric polynomial forms for the $(q,r)$-Whitney numbers, and give combinatorial interpretations in the context of $A$-tableaux. We also obtain convolution-type identities using the combinatorics of $A$-tableaux. Lastly, we present applications and theorems related to discrete $q$-distributions.

We introduce the Z-polynomial of a matroid, which we define in terms of the Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial. We then exploit a symmetry of the Z-polynomial to derive a new recursion for Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients. We solve this recursion, obtaining a closed formula for Kazhdan-Lusztig coefficients as alternating sums of multi-indexed Whitney numbers. For realizable matroids, we give a cohomological interpretation of the Z-polynomial in which the symmetry is a manifestation of Poincare duality.
A New Approach to the $r$-Whitney Numbers by Using Combinatorial Differential Calculus
In the present article we introduce two new combinatorial interpretations of the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind obtained from the combinatorics of the differential operators associated to the grammar $G:=\{ y\rightarrow yx^{m}, x\rightarrow x\}$. By specializing $m=1$ we obtain also a new combinatorial interpretation of the $r$-Stirling numbers of the second kind. Again, by specializing to the case $r=0$ we introduce a new generalization of the Stirling number of the second kind and through them a binomial type family of polynomials that generalizes Touchard's. Moreover, we show several well-known identities involving the $r$-Dowling polynomials and the $r$-Whitney numbers using the combinatorial differential calculus. Finally we prove that the $r$-Dowling polynomials are a Sheffer family relative to the generalized Touchard binomial family, study their umbral inverses, and introduce $[m]$-Stirling numbers of the first kind. From the relation between umbral calculus and the Riordan matrices we give several new combinatorial identities involving the $r$-Whitney number of both kinds, Bernoulli and Euler polynomials.

Moreover, we obtain several properties of these numbers such as explicit formulas, recurrence relations, generating functions, orthogonality and inverse relations. Finally, we define the $\bar{\boldsymbolα}$-Whitney-Lah numbers as a generalization of the $r$-Whitney-Lah numbers and we introduce their important basic properties.

Given $R \subseteq \mathbb{N}$ let ${n \brace k}_R$, ${n \brack k}_R$, and $L(n,k)_R$ be the number of ways of partitioning the set $[n]$ into $k$ non-empty subsets, cycles and lists, respectively, with each block having cardinality in $R$. We refer to these as the $R$-restricted Stirling numbers of the second and first kind and the $R$-restricted Lah numbers, respectively. Note that the classical Stirling numbers of the second kind and first kind, and Lah numbers are ${n \brace k} = {n \brace k}_{\mathbb{N}}$, ${n \brack k} = {n \brack k}_{\mathbb{N}} $ and $L(n,k) = L(n,k)_{\mathbb{N}}$, respectively.
The matrices $[{n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ have inverses $[(-1)^{n-k}{n \brack k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[(-1)^{n-k} {n \brace k}]_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[(-1)^{n-k} L(n,k)]_{n,k \geq 1}$ respectively. The inverse matrices $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ exist if and only if $1 \in R$. We express each entry of each of these matrices as the difference between the cardinalities of two explicitly defined families of labeled forests. In particular the entries of $[{n \brace k}_{[r]}]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ have combinatorial interpretations, affirmatively answering a question of Choi, Long, Ng and Smith from 2006.
If $1,2 \in R$ and if for all $n \in R$ with $n$ odd and $n \geq 3$, we have $n \pm 1 \in R$, we additionally show that each entry of $[{n \brace k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$, $[{n \brack k}_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ and $[L(n,k)_R]^{-1}_{n,k \geq 1}$ is up to an explicit sign the cardinality of a single explicitly defined family of labeled forests. Our results also provide combinatorial interpretations of the $k$th Whitney numbers of the first and second kinds of $Π_n^{1,d}$, the poset of partitions of $[n]$ that have each part size congruent to $1$ mod $d$.
On Multi Poly-Bernoulli Polynomials
In this paper, we define multi poly-Bernoulli polynomials using multiple polylogarithm and derive some properties parallel to those of poly-Bernoulli polynomials. Furthermore, an explicit formula for certain Hurwitz-Lerch type multi poly-Bernoulli polynomials is established using the $r$-Whitney numbers of the second kind.
Whitney numbers of arrangements via measure concentration of intrinsic volumes
We verify the Rota-Heron-Welsh conjecture for matroids realizable as c-arrangements: the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial of the associated matroid are log-concave. This family of matroids strictly contains that of complex hyperplane arrangements. Our proof combines the study of intrinsic volumes of certain extensions of arrangements and the Levy--Milman measure concentration phenomenon on realization spaces of arrangements.
