Curious cyclic sieving on increasing tableaux
Published in Enumerative Combinatorics & Applications 2(3), Article #S2R18, 2022, 8 pages • View Publication • BIB
We prove a cyclic sieving result for the set of $3 \times k$ packed increasing tableaux with maximum entry $m :=3+k$ under K-promotion. The "curiosity" is that the sieving polynomial arises from the $q$-hook formula for standard tableaux of "toothbrush shape" $(2^3, 1^{k-2})$ with $m+1$ boxes, whereas K-promotion here only has order $m$.

Min-cost-flow preserving bijection between subgraphs and orientations
Published • View Publication • BIB
Consider an undirected graph $G=(V,E)$. A subgraph of $G$ is a subset of its edges, whilst an orientation of $G$ is an assignment of a direction to each edge. Provided with an integer circulation-demand $d:V\to \mathbb{Z}$, we show an explicit and efficiently computable bijection between subgraphs of $G$ on which a $d$-flow exists and orientations on which a $d$-flow exists. Moreover, given a cost function $w:E\to (0,\infty)$ we can find such a bijection which preserves the $w$-min-cost-flow. In 2013, Kozma and Moran showed, using dimensional methods, that the number of subgraphs $k$-connecting a vertex $s$ to a vertex $t$ is the same as the number of orientations $k$-connecting $s$ to $t$. An application of our result is an efficient, bijective proof of this fact.

On a transversal theorem of Montejano and Karasev
Published • View Publication • BIB
We give a new proof of a theorem of Montejano and Karasev regarding $k$-dimensional transversals to small families of convex sets. While their proof uses technical algebraic and topological tools, our proof is a simple application of the Borsuk-Ulam theorem. Additionally, in certain cases our result is stronger than the Montejano-Karasev theorem.

Extremality, Left-Modularity and Semidistributivity
Published in Algebra Universalis 84:16 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
In this article we investigate the relations between three classes of lattices each extending the class of distributive lattices in a different way. In particular, we consider join-semidistributive, join-extremal and left-modular lattices, respectively. Our main motivation is a recent result by Thomas and Williams proving that every semidistributive, extremal lattice is left modular. We prove the converse of this on a slightly more general level. Our main result asserts that every join-semidistributive, left-modular lattice is join extremal. We also relate these properties to the topological notion of lexicographic shellability.

Application of hypergraph Hoffman's bound to intersecting families
Published • View Publication • BIB
Using the Filmus-Golubev-Lifshitz method to bound the independence number of a hypergraph, we solve some problems concerning multiply intersecting families with biased measure. Among other results we obtain a stability result of a measure version of the Erdos-Ko-Rado theorem for multiply intersecting families.

Bicolored tilings and the Scott map
We define bicolored tilings as a disk with a collection of smooth curves with a coloring map on the tiles that these curves delimit. Using two transformations, we define an equivalence on tilings. We then define the Scott map which creates a bijection between a generalised version of Postnikov diagrams and bicolored tilings, preserving equivalences, and mapping the geometric exchange of a diagram to an edge flip in a tiling.

Creative proofs in combinations
In this article, we present four issues and provide a creative and concise proof for each of them. The four issues are: 1- Inequality $\frac{1}{\sqrt{nπ+\fracπ{2}}}<\frac{\binom{2n}{n}}{2^{2n}}<\frac{1}{\sqrt{nπ}}$ 2- A special case of Jonathan Wilde's problem 3- Combination series 4- A feature of powerful numbers.

Smooth torus quotients of Richardson varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $k$ and $n$ be positive coprime integers with $k<n$. Let $T$ denote the subgroup of diagonal matrices in $SL(n,\mathbb{C})$. We study the GIT quotient of Richardson varieties $X^v_w$ in the Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}_{k,n}$ by $T$ with respect to a $T$-linearised line bundle $\cal{L}$ corresponding to the Plücker embedding. We give necessary and sufficient combinatorial conditions for the quotient variety $T \backslash\mkern-6mu\backslash (X_w^v)^{ss}_T({\cal L})$ to be smooth.

HS-integral and Eisenstein integral mixed circulant graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A mixed graph is called \emph{second kind hermitian integral}(or \emph{HS-integral}) if the eigenvalues of its Hermitian-adjacency matrix of second kind are integers. A mixed graph is called \emph{Eisenstein integral} if the eigenvalues of its (0, 1)-adjacency matrix are Eisenstein integers. We characterize the set $S$ for which a mixed circulant graph $\text{Circ}(\mathbb{Z}_n, S)$ is HS-integral. We also show that a mixed circulant graph is Eisenstein integral if and only if it is HS-integral. Further, the eigenvalues and the HS-eigenvalues of some oriented circulant graphs are expressed in terms of generalized M$\ddot{\text{o}}$bius function.

Automorphism groups and normal forms in Normaliz
Published • View Publication • BIB
We discuss the computation of automorphism groups and normal forms of cones and polyhedra in Normaliz, and indicate its implementation via nauty. The types of automorphisms include integral, rational, Euclidean and combinatorial, as well as algebraic for polytopes defined over real algebraic number fields. Examples treated in detail are the icosahedron and linear ordering polytopes whose Euclidean automorphism groups are determined.

New estimates on the size of $(α,2α)$-Furstenberg sets
We use recent advances on the discretized sum-product problem to obtain new bounds on the Hausdorff dimension of planar $(α,2α)$-Fursterberg sets. This provides a quantitative improvement to the $2α+ε$ bound of Héra-Shmerkin-Yavicoli. In particular, we show that every $1/2$-Furstenberg set has dimension at least $1 + 1/4536$.

Integral operators on lattices
Published • View Publication • BIB
As an abstraction and generalization of the integral operator in analysis, integral operators (known as Rota-Baxter operators of weight zero) on associative algebras and Lie algebras have played an important role in mathematics and physics. This paper initiates the study of integral operators on lattices and the resulting Rota-Baxter lattices (of weight zero). We show that properties of lattices can be characterized in terms of their integral operators. We also display a large number of integral operators on any given lattice and classify the isomorphism classes of integral operators on some common classes of lattices. We further investigate structures on semirings derived from differential and integral operators on lattices.
Facet volumes of polytopes
In this paper, motivated by the work of Edelman and Strang, we show that for fixed integers $d\geq 2$ and $n\geq d+1$ the configuration space of all facet volume vectors of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets is a full dimensional cone in $\mathbb R^{n}$. In particular, for tetrahedra ($d=3$ and $n=4$) this is a cone over a regular octahedron. Our proof is based on a novel configuration space / test map scheme which uses topological methods for finding solutions of a problem, and tools of differential geometry to identify solutions with the desired properties. Furthermore, our results open a possibility for the study of realization spaces of all $d$-polytopes in $\mathbb R^{d}$ with $n$ facets by the methods of algebraic topology.
Edge Partitions of Complete Geometric Graphs (Part 2)
Recently, the second and third author showed that complete geometric graphs on $2n$ vertices in general cannot be partitioned into $n$ plane spanning trees. Building up on this work, in this paper, we initiate the study of partitioning into beyond planar subgraphs, namely into $k$-planar and $k$-quasi-planar subgraphs and obtain first bounds on the number of subgraphs required in this setting.

On images of subshifts under injective morphisms of symbolic varieties
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the image of a subshift $X$ under various injective morphisms of symbolic algebraic varieties over monoid universes with algebraic variety alphabets is a subshift of finite type, resp. a sofic subshift, if and only if so is $X$. Similarly, let $G$ be a countable monoid and let $A$, $B$ be Artinian modules over a ring. We prove that for every closed subshift submodule $Σ\subset A^G$ and every injective $G$-equivariant uniformly continuous module homomorphism $τ\colon Σ\to B^G$, a subshift $Δ\subset Σ$ is of finite type, resp. sofic, if and only if so is the image $τ(Δ)$. Generalizations for admissible group cellular automata over admissible Artinian group structure alphabets are also obtained.
On Generalizations of Pairwise Compatibility Graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 26:3, Graph Theory (October 6, 2024) dmtcs:12295 • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is a pairwise compatibility graph (PCG) if there exists an edge-weighted tree and an interval $I$, such that each leaf of the tree is a vertex of the graph, and there is an edge $\{ x, y \}$ in $G$ if and only if the weight of the path in the tree connecting $x$ and $y$ lies within the interval $I$. Originating in phylogenetics, PCGs are closely connected to important graph classes like leaf-powers and multi-threshold graphs, widely applied in bioinformatics, especially in understanding evolutionary processes. In this paper we introduce two natural generalizations of the PCG class, namely $k$-OR-PCG and $k$-AND-PCG, which are the classes of graphs that can be expressed as union and intersection, respectively, of $k$ PCGs. These classes can be also described using the concepts of the covering number and the intersection dimension of a graph in relation to the PCG class. We investigate how the classes of OR-PCG and AND-PCG are related to PCGs, $k$-interval-PCGs and other graph classes known in the literature. In particular, we provide upper bounds on the minimum $k$ for which an arbitrary graph $G$ belongs to $k$-interval-PCGs, $k$-OR-PCG or $k$-AND-PCG classes. For particular graph classes we improve these general bounds. Moreover, we show that, for every integer $k$, there exists a bipartite graph that is not in the $k$-interval-PCGs class, proving that there is no finite $k$ for which the $k$-interval-PCG class contains all the graphs. This answers an open question of Ahmed and Rahman from 2017. Finally, using a Ramsey theory argument, we show that for any $k$, there exists graphs that are not in $k$-AND-PCG, and graphs that are not in $k$-OR-PCG.

Down-set thresholds
Published • View Publication • BIB
We elucidate the relationship between the threshold and the expectation-threshold of a down-set. Qualitatively, our main result demonstrates that there exist down-sets with polynomial gaps between their thresholds and expectation-thresholds; in particular, the logarithmic gap predictions of Kahn--Kalai and Talagrand (recently proved by Park--Pham and Frankston--Kahn--Narayanan--Park) about up-sets do not apply to down-sets. Quantitatively, we show that any collection $\mathcal{G}$ of graphs on $[n]$ that covers the family of all triangle-free graphs on $[n]$ satisfies the inequality $\sum_{G \in \mathcal{G}} \exp(-δe(G^c) / \sqrt{n}) < 1/2$ for some universal $δ> 0$, and this is essentially best-possible.
Dens, nests and the Loehr-Warrington conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
In a companion paper, we introduced raising operator series called Catalanimals. Among them are Schur Catalanimals, which represent Schur functions inside copies $Λ(X^{m,n})\subset \mathcal{E} $ of the algebra of symmetric functions embedded in the elliptic Hall algebra $\mathcal{E} $ of Burban and Schiffmann. Here we obtain a combinatorial formula for symmetric functions given by a class of Catalanimals that includes the Schur Catalanimals. Our formula is expressed as a weighted sum of LLT polynomials, with terms indexed by configurations of nested lattice paths called nests, having endpoints and bounding constraints controlled by data called a den. Applied to Schur Catalanimals for the alphabets $X^{m,1}$ with $n=1$, our `nests in a den' formula proves the combinatorial formula conjectured by Loehr and Warrington for $\nabla^m s_{μ}$ as a weighted sum of LLT polynomials indexed by systems of nested Dyck paths. When $n$ is arbitrary, our formula establishes an $(m,n)$ version of the Loehr-Warrington conjecture. In the case where each nest consists of a single lattice path, the nests in a den formula reduces to our previous shuffle theorem for paths under any line. Both this and the $(m,n)$ Loehr-Warrington formula generalize the $(km,kn)$ shuffle theorem proven by Carlsson and Mellit (for $n=1$) and Mellit. Our formula here unifies these two generalizations.

Hop-Spanners for Geometric Intersection Graphs
Published in Journal of Computational Geometry 14(2):26-64 (2023) • View Publication • BIB
A $t$-spanner of a graph $G=(V,E)$ is a subgraph $H=(V,E')$ that contains a $uv$-path of length at most $t$ for every $uv\in E$. It is known that every $n$-vertex graph admits a $(2k-1)$-spanner with $O(n^{1+1/k})$ edges for $k\geq 1$. This bound is the best possible for $1\leq k\leq 9$ and is conjectured to be optimal due to Erdős' girth conjecture. We study $t$-spanners for $t\in \{2,3\}$ for geometric intersection graphs in the plane. These spanners are also known as \emph{$t$-hop spanners} to emphasize the use of graph-theoretic distances (as opposed to Euclidean distances between the geometric objects or their centers). We obtain the following results: (1) Every $n$-vertex unit disk graph (UDG) admits a 2-hop spanner with $O(n)$ edges; improving upon the previous bound of $O(n\log n)$. (2) The intersection graph of $n$ axis-aligned fat rectangles admits a 2-hop spanner with $O(n\log n)$ edges, and this bound is tight up to a factor of $\log \log n$. (3) The intersection graph of $n$ fat convex bodies in the plane admits a 3-hop spanner with $O(n\log n)$ edges. (4) The intersection graph of $n$ axis-aligned rectangles admits a 3-hop spanner with $O(n\log^2 n)$ edges.

On the Gauss-Epple homomorphism of the braid group $B_n$, and generalizations to Artin groups of crystallographic type
In this paper, we introduce a broad family of group homomorphisms that we name the Gauss-Epple homomorphisms. In the setting of braid groups, the Gauss-Epple invariant was originally defined by Epple based on a note of Gauss as an action of the braid group $B_n$ on the set $\{1, \dots, n\}\times\mathbb{Z}$; we prove that it is well-defined. We consider the associated group homomorphism from $B_n$ to the symmetric group $\text{Sym}(\{1, \dots, n\}\times\mathbb{Z})$. We prove that this homomorphism factors through $\mathbb{Z}^n\rtimes S_n$ (in fact, its image is an order 2 subgroup of the previous group). We also describe the kernel of the homomorphism and calculate the asymptotic probability that it contains a random braid of a given length. Furthermore, we discuss the super-Gauss-Epple homomorphism, a homomorphism which extends the generalization of the Gauss-Epple homomorphism and describe a related 1-cocycle of the symmetric group $S_n$ on the set of antisymmetric $n\times n$ matrices over the integers. We then generalize the super-Gauss-Epple homomorphism and the associated 1-cocycle to Artin groups of finite type. For future work, we suggest studying possible generalizations to complex reflection groups and computing the vector spaces of Gauss-Epple analogues.
