Simulating Quantum Computations with Tutte Polynomials
Published in npj Quantum Information 7, 141 (2021) • View Publication • BIB
We establish a classical heuristic algorithm for exactly computing quantum probability amplitudes. Our algorithm is based on mapping output probability amplitudes of quantum circuits to evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of graphic matroids. The algorithm evaluates the Tutte polynomial recursively using the deletion-contraction property while attempting to exploit structural properties of the matroid. We consider several variations of our algorithm and present experimental results comparing their performance on two classes of random quantum circuits. Further, we obtain an explicit form for Clifford circuit amplitudes in terms of matroid invariants and an alternative efficient classical algorithm for computing the output probability amplitudes of Clifford circuits.

Recurrence Ranks and Moment Sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the "moment rank" and "unitary rank" of numerical sequences, close relatives of linear-recursive order. We show that both parameters can be characterized by a broad set of criteria involving moments of measures, types of recurrence relations, Hankel matrix factorizations, Waring rank, analytic properties of generating functions, and algebraic properties of polynomial ideals. In the process, we solve the "complex finite-atomic" and "integral finite-atomic" moment problems: which sequences arise as the moments of a finite-atomic complex-/integer-valued measures on $\mathbb{C}$?

Permutations with exactly one copy of a decreasing pattern of length k
We construct an injection from the set of permutations of length $n$ that contain exactly one copy of the decreasing pattern of length $k$ to the set of permutations of length $n+2$ that avoid that pattern. We then prove that the generating function counting the former is not rational, and in the case when $k$ is even and $k\geq 4$, it is not even algebraic. We extend our injection and our nonrationality result to a larger class of patterns.

Multi-Rees Algebras of Strongly Stable Ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that the multi-Rees algebra $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ of a collection of strongly stable ideals $I_1, \ldots, I_r$ is of fiber type. In particular, we provide a Gröbner basis for its defining ideal as a union of a Gröbner basis for its special fiber and binomial syzygies. We also study the Koszulness of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus \cdots \oplus I_r)$ based on parameters associated to the collection. Furthermore, we establish a quadratic Gröbner basis of the defining ideal of $\mathcal{R}(I_1 \oplus I_2)$ where each of the strongly stable ideals has two quadric Borel generators. As a consequence, we conclude that this multi-Rees algebra is Koszul.

Expander spanning subgraphs with large girth
Published • View Publication • BIB
We conjecture that finite graphs with positive Cheeger constant admit a spanning subgraph with positive Cheeger constant and girth proportional to the diameter. We prove this conjecture for regular expander graphs with large expansion. Our proof relies on the Local Lemma.

Voronoi tilings, toric arrangements and degenerations of line bundles I
We describe limits of line bundles on nodal curves in terms of toric arrangements associated to Voronoi tilings of Euclidean spaces. These tilings encode information on the relationship between the possibly infinitely many limits, and ultimately give rise to a new definition of limit linear series. This paper and its second and third companion parts are the first in a series aimed to explore this new approach. In the present article, we set up the combinatorial framework and show how graphs with integer lengths associated to the edges provide tilings of Euclidean spaces by certain polytopes associated to the graph itself and to certain of its subgraphs. We further provide a description of the combinatorial structure of these polytopes and the way they are glued together in the tiling. In the second part of the series, we describe the arrangements of toric varieties associated to these tilings. These results will be of use in the third part to achieve our goal of describing all stable limits of a family of line bundles along a degenerating family of curves.

Voronoi tilings, toric arrangements and degenerations of line bundles II
We describe limits of line bundles on nodal curves in terms of toric arrangements associated to Voronoi tilings of Euclidean spaces. These tilings encode information on the relationship between the possibly infinitely many limits, and ultimately give rise to a new definition of limit linear series. This article and its first and third part companion parts are the first in a series aimed to explore this new approach. In the first part, we set up the combinatorial framework and showed how graphs weighted with integer lengths associated to the edges provide tilings of Euclidean spaces by polytopes associated to the graph itself and to its subgraphs. In this part, we describe the arrangements of toric varieties associated to these tilings. Roughly speaking, the normal fan to each polytope in the tiling corresponds to a toric variety, and these toric varieties are glued together in an arrangement according to how the polytopes meet. We provide a thorough description of these toric arrangements from different perspectives: by using normal fans, as unions of torus orbits, by describing the (infinitely many) polynomial equations defining them in products of doubly infinite chains of projective lines, and as degenerations of algebraic tori. These results will be of use in the third part to achieve our goal of describing all stable limits of a family of line bundles along a degenerating family of curves.

String of columns rewriting and confluence of the jeu de taquin
Schützenberger's jeu de taquin is an algorithm on the structure of tableaux, which transforms a skew tableau into a Young one by local transformation rules on the columns of the tableaux. This algorithm defines an equivalence relation on tableaux compatible with the plactic congruence, and gives a proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule on Schur polynomials. In this article, we introduce the notion of string of columns rewriting system as mechanism of transformations of glued sequences of columns. We describe the execution of the jeu de taquin algorithm as rewriting paths of a string of columns rewriting. We deduce algebraic properties on the plastic congruence and we relate the jeu de taquin to insertion algorithms on tableaux.
Constellations in prime elements of number fields
Given any number field, we prove that there exist arbitrarily shaped constellations consisting of pairwise non-associate prime elements of the ring of integers. This result extends the celebrated Green-Tao theorem on arithmetic progressions of rational primes and Tao's theorem on constellations of Gaussian primes. Furthermore, we prove a constellation theorem on prime representations of binary quadratic forms with integer coefficients. More precisely, for a non-degenerate primitive binary quadratic form $F$ which is not negative definite, there exist arbitrarily shaped constellations consisting of pairs of integers $(x,y)$ for which $F(x,y)$ is a rational prime. The latter theorem is obtained by extending the framework from the ring of integers to the pair of an order and its invertible fractional ideal.

Finding large expanders in graphs: from topological minors to induced subgraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider a structural and geometric property of graphs, namely the presence of large expanders. The problem of finding such structures was first considered by Krivelevich [SIAM J. Disc. Math. 32 1 (2018)]. Here, we show that the problem of finding a large induced subgraph that is an expander can be reduced to the simpler problem of finding a topological minor that is an expander. Our proof is constructive, which is helpful in an algorithmic setting. We also show that every large subgraph of an expander graph contains a large subgraph which is itself an expander.

Classifications of $Γ$-colored minuscule posets and $P$-minuscule Kac--Moody representations
Published in Australasian Journal of Combinatorics 81(3) (2021), 412--446 • Search Publication
The $Γ$-colored $d$-complete and $Γ$-colored minuscule posets unify and generalize multiple classes of colored posets introduced by R.A. Proctor, J.R. Stembridge, and R.M. Green. In previous work, we showed that $Γ$-colored minuscule posets are necessary and sufficient to build from colored posets certain representations of Kac--Moody algebras that generalize minuscule representations of semisimple Lie algebras. In this paper we classify $Γ$-colored minuscule posets, which also classifies the corresponding representations. We show that $Γ$-colored minuscule posets are precisely disjoint unions of colored minuscule posets of Proctor and connected full heaps of Green. Connected finite $Γ$-colored minuscule posets can be realized as certain posets of coroots in the corresponding finite Lie type.

The birational Lalanne-Kreweras involution
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 2, pp. 227-265 • View Publication • BIB
The Lalanne-Kreweras involution is an involution on the set of Dyck paths which combinatorially exhibits the symmetry of the number of valleys and major index statistics. We define piecewise-linear and birational extensions of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution. Actually, we show that the Lalanne-Kreweras involution is a special case of a more general operator, called rowvacuation, which acts on the antichains of any graded poset. Rowvacuation, like the closely related and more studied rowmotion operator, is a composition of toggles. We obtain the piecewise-linear and birational lifts of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution by using the piecewise-linear and birational toggles of Einstein and Propp. We show that the symmetry properties of the Lalanne-Kreweras involution extend to these piecewise-linear and birational lifts.

Elliptic solutions of dynamical Lucas sequences
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study two types of dynamical extensions of Lucas sequences and give elliptic solutions for them. The first type concerns a level-dependent (or discrete time-dependent) version involving commuting variables. We show that a nice solution for this system is given by elliptic numbers. The second type involves a non-commutative version of Lucas sequences which defines the non-commutative (or abstract) Fibonacci polynomials introduced by Johann Cigler. If the non-commuting variables are specialized to be elliptic-commuting variables the abstract Fibonacci polynomials become non-commutative elliptic Fibonacci polynomials. Some properties we derive for these include their explicit expansion in terms of normalized monomials and a non-commutative elliptic Euler--Cassini identity.

On balanced and abelian properties of circular words over a ternary alphabet
Published • View Publication • BIB
We revisit the question of classification of balanced circular words and focus on the case of a ternary alphabet. We propose a $3$-dimensional generalisation of the discrete approximation representation of Christoffel words. By considering the minimal bound $3$ for abelian complexity of balanced circular words over a ternary alphabet, we provide a classification of all circular words over a ternary alphabet with abelian complexity subject to this bound. This result also allows us to construct an uncountable set of bi-infinite aperiodic words with abelian complexity equal to $3$.

Rank of Near Uniform Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A central question in random matrix theory is universality. When an emergent phenomena is observed from a large collection of chosen random variables it is natural to ask if this behavior is specific to the chosen random variable or if the behavior occurs for a larger class of random variables. The rank statistics of random matrices chosen uniformly from $\operatorname{Mat}(\mathbf{F}_q)$ over a finite field are well understood. The universality properties of these statistics are not yet fully understood however. Recently Wood [39] and Maples [26] considered a natural requirement where the random variables are not allowed to be too close to constant and they showed that the rank statistics match with the uniform model up to an error of type $e^{-cn}$. In this paper we explore a condition called near uniform, under which we are able to prove tighter bounds $q^{-cn}$ on the asymptotic convergence of the rank statistics. Our method is completely elementary, and allows for a small number of the entries to be deterministic, and for the entries to not be identically distributed so long as they are independent. More importantly, the method also extends to near uniform symmetric, alternating matrices. Our method also applies to two models of perturbations of random matrices sampled uniformly over $\operatorname{GL}_n(\mathbf{F}_q)$: subtracting the identity or taking a minor of a uniformly sampled invertible matrix.

Gelfand--Tsetlin-type weight bases for all special linear Lie algebra representations corresponding to skew Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We generalize the famous weight basis constructions of the finite-dimensional irreducible representations of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ obtained by Gelfand and Tsetlin in 1950. Using combinatorial methods, we construct one such basis for each finite-dimensional representation of $\mathfrak{sl}(n,\mathbb{C})$ associated to a given skew Schur function. Our constructions use diamond-colored distributive lattices of skew-shaped semistandard tableaux that generalize some classical Gelfand--Tsetlin (GT) lattices. Our constructions take place within the context of a certain programmatic study of poset models for semisimple Lie algebra representations and Weyl group symmetric functions undertaken by the first-named author and others. Some key aspects of the methodology of that program are recapitulated here. Combinatorial and representation-theoretic applications of our constructions are pursued here and elsewhere.
Symmetric Fibonaccian distributive lattices and representations of the special linear Lie algebras
Published in Involve 16 (2023) 201-226 • View Publication • BIB
We present a family of rank symmetric diamond-colored distributive lattices that are naturally related to the Fibonacci sequence and certain of its generalizations. These lattices re-interpret and unify descriptions of some un- or differently-colored lattices found variously in the literature. We demonstrate that our symmetric Fibonaccian lattices naturally realize certain (often reducible) representations of the special linear Lie algebras, with weight basis vectors realized as lattice elements and Lie algebra generators acting along the covering digraph edges of each lattice. We present evidence that each such weight basis possesses certain distinctive extremal properties. We provide new descriptions of the lattice cardinalities and rank generating functions and offer several conjectures/open problems. Throughout, we make connections with integer sequences from the OEIS.

Rainbow paths and large rainbow matchings
Published • View Publication • BIB
A conjecture of the first two authors is that $n$ matchings of size $n$ in any graph have a rainbow matching of size $n-1$. We prove a lower bound of $\frac{2}{3}n-1$, improving on the trivial $\frac{1}{2}n$, and an analogous result for hypergraphs. For $\{C_3,C_5\}$-free graphs and for disjoint matchings we obtain a lower bound of $\frac{3n}{4}-O(1)$. We also discuss a conjecture on rainbow alternating paths, that if true would yield a lower bound of $n-\sqrt{2n}$. We prove the non-alternating (ordinary paths) version of this conjecture.
Sign-alternating Gibonacci polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider various properties and manifestations of some sign-alternating univariate polynomials borne of right-triangular integer arrays related to certain generalizations of the Fibonacci sequence. Using a theory of the root geometry of polynomial sequences developed by J. L. Gross, T. Mansour, T. W. Tucker, and D. G. L. Wang, we show that the roots of these `sign-alternating Gibonacci polynomials' are real and distinct, and we obtain explicit bounds on these roots. We also derive Binet-type closed expressions for the polynomials. Some of these results are applied to resolve finiteness questions pertaining to a one-player combinatorial game (or puzzle) modelled after a well-known puzzle we call the `Networked-numbers Game.' Elsewhere, the first- and second-named authors, in collaboration with A. Nance, have found rank symmetric `diamond-colored' distributive lattices naturally related to certain representations of the special linear Lie algebras. Those lattice cardinalities can be computed using sign-alternating Fibonacci polynomials, and the lattice rank generating functions correspond to the rows of some new and easily defined triangular integer arrays. Here, we present Gibonaccian, and in particular Lucasian, versions of those symmetric Fibonaccian lattices/results, but without the algebraic context of the latter.
