Betti tables of $p$-Borel-fixed ideals
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this note we provide a counter-example to a conjecture of K. Pardue [Thesis, Brandeis University, 1994.], which asserts that if a monomial ideal is $p$-Borel-fixed, then its $\naturals$-graded Betti table, after passing to any field does not depend on the field. More precisely, we show that, for any monomial ideal $I$ in a polynomial ring $S$ over the ring $\ints$ of integers and for any prime number $p$, there is a $p$-Borel-fixed monomial $S$-ideal $J$ such that a region of the multigraded Betti table of $J(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ is in one-to-one correspondence with the multigraded Betti table of $I(S \otimes_\ints \ell)$ for all fields $\ell$ of arbitrary characteristic. There is no analogous statement for Borel-fixed ideals in characteristic zero. Additionally, the construction also shows that there are $p$-Borel-fixed ideals with non-cellular minimal resolutions.

The Bubble Skein Element and Applications
Published in Journal of Knot Theory and Its Ramifications, Volume 23, Issue 14, December 2014 • View Publication • BIB
We study a certain skein element in the relative Kauffman bracket skein module of the disk with some marked points, and expand this element in terms linearly independent elements of this module. This expansion is used to compute and study the head and the tail of the colored Jones polynomial and in particular we give a simple $q-$series for the tail of the knot $8_5$. Furthermore, we use this expansion to obtain an easy determination of the theta coefficients.

Core stability in hedonic coalition formation
Published • View Publication • BIB
In many economic, social and political situations individuals carry out activities in groups (coalitions) rather than alone and on their own. Examples range from households and sport clubs to research networks, political parties and trade unions. The underlying game theoretic framework is known as coalition formation. This survey discusses the notion of core stability in hedonic coalition formation (where each player's happiness only depends on the other members of his coalition but not on how the remaining players outside his coalition are grouped). We present the central concepts and algorithmic approaches in the area, provide many examples, and pose a number of open problems.

Polylogarithm approaches to Riemann Zeta function zeroes
We use visible point vector identities to examine polylogarithms in the neighbourhood of the Riemann zeta function zeroes. New formulas limiting to the trivial zeroes and to the critical line on the zeta function are given. Similar results arise from Euler-Zagier sums given in Bailey, Borwein and Crandall [4] providing new infinite product identities.

D-analogues of q-shifted factorial and the q-Kummer sum
Recently, the concept of a D-analogue was introduced by the author. This is a Dirichlet series analogue for the already known and well researched hypergeometric q-series. we consider the D-analogues of the q-binomial coefficients, and a D-analogue of the q-Kummer (Bailey-Daum) sum.

Combinatorial Excess Intersection
Published • View Publication • BIB
We provide formulas and algorithms for computing the excess numbers of certain ideals. The solution for monomial ideals is given by the mixed volumes of certain polytopes. These results enable us to design specific homotopies for numerical algebraic geometry.

The Arc-Weighted Version of the Second Neighborhood Conjecture
Published • View Publication • BIB
Seymour conjectured that every oriented simple graph contains a vertex whose second neighborhood is at least as large as its first. Seymour's conjecture has been verified in several special cases, most notably for tournaments by Fisher. One extension of the conjecture that has been used by several researchers is to consider vertex-weighted digraphs. In this paper we introduce a version of the conjecture for arc-weighted digraphs. We prove the conjecture in the special case of arc-weighted tournaments, strengthening Fisher's theorem. Our proof does not rely on Fisher's result, and thus can be seen as an alternate proof of said theorem.
A quadratic formula for basic hypergeometric series related to Askey-Wilson polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove a general quadratic formula for basic hypergeometric series, from which simple proofs of several recent determinant and Pfaffian formulas are obtained. A special case of the quadratic formula is actually related to a Gram determinant formula for Askey-Wilson polynomials. We also show how to derive a recent double-sum formula for the moments of Askey-Wilson polynomials from Newton's interpolation formula.

Extensions of Sperner and Tucker's lemma for manifolds
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A, v. 132 (2015), pp. 172-187 • View Publication • BIB
The Sperner and Tucker lemmas are combinatorial analogous of the Brouwer and Borsuk - Ulam theorems with many useful applications. These classic lemmas are concerning labellings of triangulated discs and spheres. In this paper we show that discs and spheres can be substituted by large classes of manifolds with or without boundary.

The Satisfiability Threshold for k-XORSAT
Published • View Publication • BIB
We consider "unconstrained" random $k$-XORSAT, which is a uniformly random system of $m$ linear non-homogeneous equations in $\mathbb{F}_2$ over $n$ variables, each equation containing $k \geq 3$ variables, and also consider a "constrained" model where every variable appears in at least two equations. Dubois and Mandler proved that $m/n=1$ is a sharp threshold for satisfiability of constrained 3-XORSAT, and analyzed the 2-core of a random 3-uniform hypergraph to extend this result to find the threshold for unconstrained 3-XORSAT. We show that $m/n=1$ remains a sharp threshold for satisfiability of constrained $k$-XORSAT for every $k\ge 3$, and we use standard results on the 2-core of a random $k$-uniform hypergraph to extend this result to find the threshold for unconstrained $k$-XORSAT. For constrained $k$-XORSAT we narrow the phase transition window, showing that $m-n \to -\infty$ implies almost-sure satisfiability, while $m-n \to +\infty$ implies almost-sure unsatisfiability.

Energy-minimizing error-correcting codes
Published in IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 60 (2014), 7442-7450 • View Publication • BIB
We study a discrete model of repelling particles, and we show using linear programming bounds that many familiar families of error-correcting codes minimize a broad class of potential energies when compared with all other codes of the same size and block length. Examples of these universally optimal codes include Hamming, Golay, and Reed-Solomon codes, among many others, and this helps explain their robustness as the channel model varies. Universal optimality of these codes is equivalent to minimality of their binomial moments, which has been proved in many cases by Ashikhmin and Barg. We highlight connections with mathematical physics and the analogy between these results and previous work by Cohn and Kumar in the continuous setting, and we develop a framework for optimizing the linear programming bounds. Furthermore, we show that if these bounds prove a code is universally optimal, then the code remains universally optimal even if one codeword is removed.
Minkowski Polynomials and Mutations
Published in SIGMA 8 (2012), 094, 707 pages • View Publication • BIB
Given a Laurent polynomial f, one can form the period of f: this is a function of one complex variable that plays an important role in mirror symmetry for Fano manifolds. Mutations are a particular class of birational transformations acting on Laurent polynomials in two variables; they preserve the period and are closely connected with cluster algebras. We propose a higher-dimensional analog of mutation acting on Laurent polynomials f in n variables. In particular we give a combinatorial description of mutation acting on the Newton polytope P of f, and use this to establish many basic facts about mutations. Mutations can be understood combinatorially in terms of Minkowski rearrangements of slices of P, or in terms of piecewise-linear transformations acting on the dual polytope P^* (much like cluster transformations). Mutations map Fano polytopes to Fano polytopes, preserve the Ehrhart series of the dual polytope, and preserve the period of f. Finally we use our results to show that Minkowski polynomials, which are a family of Laurent polynomials that give mirror partners to many three-dimensional Fano manifolds, are connected by a sequence of mutations if and only if they have the same period.

Ramsey property for Boolean algebras with ideals and $\mathcal{P}(ω_1)/\rm{fin}$
We apply the Dual Ramsey Theorem of Graham and Rothschild to prove the Ramsey property for classes of finite Boolean algebras with distinguished ideals. This allows us to compute the universal minimal flow of the group of automorphisms of $\mathcal{P}(ω_1)/\rm{fin},$ should it be isomorphic to $\mathcal{P}(ω)/\rm{fin}$ or not, and of other quotients of power set algebras. Taking Fraïssé limits of these classes, we can compute universal minimal flows of groups of homeomorphisms of the Cantor set fixing some closed subsets.

A general product of tensors with applications
Published • View Publication • BIB
We define a general product of two $n$-dimensional tensors $\mathbb {A}$ and $\mathbb {B}$ with orders $m\ge 2$ and $k\ge 1$, respectively. This product is a generalization of the usual matrix product, and satisfies the associative law. Using this product, many concepts and known results of tensors can be simply expressed and/or proved, and a number of applications of this product will be given. Using this tensor product and some properties on the resultant of a system of homogeneous equations on $n$ variables, we define the similarity and congruence of tensors (which are also the generalizations of the corresponding relations for matrices), and prove that similar tensors have the same characteristic polynomials. We study two special kinds of similarity: permutational similarity and diagonal similarity, and their applications in the study of the spectra of hypergraphs and nonnegative irreducible tensors. We define the direct product of tensors (in matrix case it is also called the Kronecker product), and give its applications in the study of the spectra of two kinds of the products of hypergraphs. We also give applications of this tensor product in the study of nonnegative tensors, including a characterization of primitive tensors, the upper bounds of primitive degrees and the cyclic indices of some nonnegative irreducible tensors.

An extension of Hoffman and Smith's subdivision theorem
In 1975 Hoffman and Smith showed that for a graph $G\ne\tilde{D}_n$ with an internal path, the value of the largest eigenvalue decreases strictly each time we subdivide the internal path. In this paper we extend this result to show that for a graph $G\ne K_{1,4}$ with a vertex of degree 4 or more, we can subdivide said vertex to create an internal path and the value of the largest eigenvalue also strictly decreases.

Nonlinearity of quartic rotation symmetric Boolean functions
Published in Southeast Asian Bull. Math. 37 (2013), 951-961 • Search Publication
Nonlinearity of rotation symmetric Boolean functions is an important topic on cryptography algorithm. Let $e\ge 1$ be any given integer. In this paper, we investigate the following question: Is the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ equal to its weight? We introduce some new simple sub-functions and develop new technique to get several recursive formulas. Then we use these recursive formulas to show that the nonlinearity of the quartic rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}x_{3e}$ is the same as its weight. So we answer the above question affirmatively. Finally, we conjecture that if $l\ge 4$ is an integer, then the nonlinearity of the rotation symmetric Boolean function generated by the monomial $x_0x_ex_{2e}...x_{le}$ equals its weight.

Coloring the cube with rainbow cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
For every even positive integer $k\ge 4$ let $f(n,k)$ denote the minimim number of colors required to color the edges of the $n$-dimensional cube $Q_n$, so that the edges of every copy of $k$-cycle $C_k$ receive $k$ distinct colors. Faudree, Gyárfás, Lesniak and Schelp proved that $f(n,4)=n$ for $n=4$ or $n>5$. We consider larger $k$ and prove that if $k \equiv 0$ (mod 4), then there are positive constants $c_1, c_2$ depending only on $k$ such that $$c_1n^{k/4} < f(n,k) < c_2 n^{k/4}.$$ Our upper bound uses an old construction of Bose and Chowla of generalized Sidon sets. For $k \equiv 2$ (mod 4), the situation seems more complicated. For the smallest case k=6 we show that $$n \le f(n, 6) < n^{1+o(1)}.$$ The upper bound is obtained from Behrend's construction of a subset of the integers with no three term arithmetic progression.

Right-angled billiards and volumes of moduli spaces of quadratic differentials on $\mathbb{C}P^1$
Published in Annales de l'ENS, 49:6 (2016) • Search Publication
We use the relation between the volumes of the strata of meromorphic quadratic differentials with at most simple poles on the Riemann sphere and counting functions of the number of (bands of) closed geodesics in associated flat metrics with singularities to prove a very explicit formula for the volume of each such stratum conjectured by M. Kontsevich a decade ago. The proof is based on a formula for the Lyapunov exponents of the geodesic flow on the moduli space, which gives a recursive formula from which the volumes could be recovered. An appendix with an ergodic theorem proved by Jon Chaika is added to the current version. Applying this ergodic theorem to the Teichmueller geodesic flow we obtain EXACT quadratic asymptotics for the number of (bands of) closed trajectories and for the number of generalized diagonals in almost all right-angled billiards. All coefficients in the asymptotics (expressed in terms of the associated Siegel-Veech constants) are explicitly computed.

Counting generalized Jenkins-Strebel differentials
Published in Geometriae Dedicata, 170:1 (2014), 195--217 • View Publication • BIB
We study the combinatorial geometry of "lattice" Jenkins--Strebel differentials with simple zeroes and simple poles on $\mathbb{C}P^1$ and of the corresponding counting functions. Developing the results of M. Kontsevich we evaluate the leading term of the symmetric polynomial counting the number of such "lattice" Jenkins-Strebel differentials having all zeroes on a single singular layer. This allows us to express the number of general "lattice" Jenkins-Strebel differentials as an appropriate weighted sum over decorated trees. The problem of counting Jenkins-Strebel differentials is equivalent to the problem of counting pillowcase covers, which serve as integer points in appropriate local coordinates on strata of moduli spaces of meromorphic quadratic differentials. This allows us to relate our counting problem to calculations of volumes of these strata . A very explicit expression for the volume of any stratum of meromorphic quadratic differentials recently obtained by the authors leads to an interesting combinatorial identity for our sums over trees.
