Algebro-geometric semistability of polarized toric manifolds

Let $Δ\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ be an $n$-dimensional integral Delzant polytope. It is well-known that there exist the $n$-dimensional compact toric manifold $X_Δ$ and the very ample $(\mathbb{C}^\times)^n$-equivariant line bundle $L_Δ$ on $X_Δ$ associated with $Δ$. In the present paper, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for Chow semistability of $(X_Δ,L_Δ^i)$ for a maximal torus action. We then see that asymptotic (relative) Chow semistability implies (relative) K-semistability for toric degenerations, which is proved by Ross and Thomas, without any knowledge of Riemann-Roch theorem and test configurations.
On the degeneracy of $SU(3)_k$ topological phases

The ground state degeneracy of an $SU(N)_k$ topological phase with $n$ quasiparticle excitations is relevant quantity for quantum computation, condensed matter physics, and knot theory. It is an open question to find a closed formula for this degeneracy for any $N > 2$. Here we present the problem in an explicit combinatorial way and analyze the case N=3. While not finding a complete closed-form solution, we obtain generating functions and solve some special cases.

The problem of computing the class expansion of some symmetric functions evaluated in Jucys-Murphy elements appears in different contexts, for instance in the computation of matrix integrals. Recently, M. Lassalle gave a unified algebraic method to obtain some induction relations on the coefficients in this kind of expansion. In this paper, we give a simple purely combinatorial proof of his result. Besides, using the same type of argument, we obtain new simpler formulas. We also prove an analogous formula in the Hecke algebra of $(S_{2n},H_n)$ and use it to solve a conjecture of S. Matsumoto on the subleading term of orthogonal Weingarten function. Finally, we propose a conjecture for a continuous interpolation between both problems.
Noncrossing Linked Partitions and Large (3,2)-Motzkin Paths

Noncrossing linked partitions arise in the study of certain transforms in free probability theory. We explore the connection between noncrossing linked partitions and colored Motzkin paths. A (3,2)-Motzkin path can be viewed as a colored Motzkin path in the sense that there are three types of level steps and two types of down steps. A large (3,2)-Motzkin path is defined to be a (3,2)-Motzkin path for which there are only two types of level steps on the x-axis. We establish a one-to-one correspondence between the set of noncrossing linked partitions of [n+1] and the set of large (3,2)-Motzkin paths of length n. In this setting, we get a simple explanation of the well-known relation between the large and the little Schroder numbers.

Let $K=Z/pZ$ and let $A$ be a subset of $\GL_r(K)$ such that $<A>$ is solvable. We reduce the study of the growth of $A$ under the group operation to the nilpotent setting. Specifically we prove that either $A$ grows rapidly (meaning $|A\cdot A\cdot A|\gg |A|^{1+δ}$), or else there are groups $U_R$ and $S$, with $S/U_R$ nilpotent such that $A_k\cap S$ is large and $U_R\subseteq A_k$, where $k$ is a bounded integer and $A_k = \{x_1 x_2...b x_k : x_i \in A \cup A^{-1} \cup {1}}$. The implied constants depend only on the rank $r$ of $\GL_r(K)$.
When combined with recent work by Pyber and Szabó, the main result of this paper implies that it is possible to draw the same conclusions without supposing that $<A>$ is solvable.
A geometric proof of the colored Tverberg theorem
The colored Tverberg theorem asserts that for every d and r there exists t=t(d,r) such that for every set C in R^d of cardinality (d+1)t, partitioned into t-point subsets C_1,C_2,...,C_{d+1} (which we think of as color classes; e.g., the points of C_1 are red, the points of C_2 blue, etc.), there exist r disjoint sets R_1,R_2,...,R_r \subseteq C that are "rainbow", meaning that |R_i \cap C_j| < 2 for every i,j, and whose convex hulls all have a common point.
All known proofs of this theorem are topological. We present a geometric version of a recent beautiful proof by Blagojević, Matschke, and Ziegler, avoiding a direct use of topological methods. The purpose of this de-topologization is to make the proof more concrete and intuitive, and accessible to a wider audience.

Using previous results concerning the rank two and rank three cases, all connected simply connected Cartan schemes for which the real roots form a finite irreducible root system of arbitrary rank are determined. As a consequence one obtains the list of all crystallographic arrangements, a large subclass of the class of simplicial hyperplane arrangements. Supposing that the rank is at least three, the classification yields Cartan schemes of type $A$ and $B$, an infinite family of series involving the types $C$ and $D$, and $74$ sporadic examples.

Broline, Crowe and Isaacs have computed the determinant of a matrix associated to a Conway-Coxeter frieze pattern. We generalise their result to the corresponding frieze pattern of cluster variables arising from the Fomin-Zelevinsky cluster algebra of type A. We give a representation-theoretic interpretation of this result in terms of certain configurations of indecomposable objects in the root category of type A.
Discrete series representations and K multiplicities for U(p,q). User's guide
This document is a companion for the Maple program : Discrete series and K-types for U(p,q) available on:http://www.math.jussieu.fr/~vergne We explain an algorithm to compute the multiplicities of an irreducible representation of U(p)x U(q) in a discrete series of U(p,q). It is based on Blattner's formula. We recall the general mathematical background to compute Kostant partition functions via multidimensional residues, and we outline our algorithm. We also point out some properties of the piecewise polynomial functions describing multiplicities based on Paradan's results.

We prove that the maximum degree $Δ_n$ of a random series-parallel graph with $n$ vertices satisfies $Δ_n/\log n \to c$ in probability, and $\mathbb{E}\, Δ_n \sim c \log n$ for a computable constant $c>0$. The same result holds for outerplanar graphs.
Pattern characterization of rationally smooth affine Schubert varieties of type A

Schubert varieties in finite dimensional flag manifolds G/P are a well-studied family of projective varieties indexed by elements of the corresponding Weyl group W. In particular, there are many tests for smoothness and rational smoothness of these varieties. One key result due to Lakshmibai-Sandhya is that in type A the smooth Schubert varieties are precisely those that are indexed by permutations that avoid the patterns 4231 and 3412. Recently, there has been a flurry of research related to the infinite dimensional analogs of flag manifolds corresponding with G being a Kac-Moody group and W being an affine Weyl group or parabolic quotient. In this paper we study the case when W is the affine Weyl group of type A or the affine permutations. We develop the notion of pattern avoidance for affine permutations. Our main result is a characterization of the rationally smooth Schubert varieties corresponding to affine permutations in terms of the patterns 4231 and 3412 and the twisted spiral permutations.
Bounds on $s$-distance sets with strength $t$

A finite set $X$ in the Euclidean unit sphere is called an $s$-distance set if the set of distances between any distinct two elements of $X$ has size $s$. We say that $t$ is the strength of $X$ if $X$ is a spherical $t$-design but not a spherical $(t+1)$-design. Delsarte-Goethals-Seidel gave an absolute bound for the cardinality of an $s$-distance set. The results of Neumaier and Cameron-Goethals-Seidel imply that if $X$ is a spherical 2-distance set with strength 2, then the known absolute bound for 2-distance sets is improved. This bound are also regarded as that for a strongly regular graph with the certain condition of the Krein parameters.
In this paper, we give two generalizations of this bound to spherical $s$-distance sets with strength $t$ (more generally, to $s$-distance sets with strength $t$ in a two-point-homogeneous space), and to $Q$-polynomial association schemes.
First, for any $s$ and $s-1 \leq t \leq 2s-2$, we improve the known absolute bound for the size of a spherical $s$-distance set with strength $t$. Secondly, for any $d$, we give an absolute bound for the size of a $Q$-polynomial association scheme of class $d$ with the certain conditions of the Krein parameters.
The Wronski map and shifted tableau theory

The Mukhin-Tarasov-Varchenko Theorem, conjectured by B. and M. Shapiro, has a number of interesting consequences. Among them is a well-behaved correspondence between certain points on a Grassmannian - those sent by the Wronski map to polynomials with only real roots - and (dual equivalence classes of) Young tableaux.
In this paper, we restrict this correspondence to the orthogonal Grassmannian OG(n,2n+1) inside Gr(n,2n+1). We prove that a point lies on OG(n,2n+1) if and only if the corresponding tableau has a certain type of symmetry. From this we recover much of the theory of shifted tableaux for Schubert calculus on OG(n,2n+1), including a new, geometric proof of the Littlewood-Richardson rule for OG(n,2n+1).
Product and puzzle formulae for GL_n Belkale-Kumar coefficients

The Belkale-Kumar product on H*(G/P) is a degeneration of the usual cup product on the cohomology ring of a generalized flag manifold. In the case G=GL_n, it was used by N. Ressayre to determine the regular faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone.
We show that for G/P a (d-1)-step flag manifold, each Belkale-Kumar structure constant is a product of d(d-1)/2 Littlewood-Richardson numbers, for which there are many formulae available, e.g. the puzzles of [Knutson-Tao '03]. This refines previously known factorizations into d-1 factors. We define a new family of puzzles to assemble these to give a direct combinatorial formula for Belkale-Kumar structure constants.
These "BK-puzzles" are related to extremal honeycombs, as in [Knutson-Tao-Woodward~'04]; using this relation we give another proof of Ressayre's result.
Finally, we describe the regular faces of the Littlewood-Richardson cone on which the Littlewood-Richardson number is always 1; they correspond to nonzero Belkale-Kumar coefficients on partial flag manifolds where every subquotient has dimension 1 or 2.
Structural properties of 1-planar graphs and an application to acyclic edge coloring

A graph is called 1-planar if it can be drawn on the plane so that each edge is crossed by at most one other edge. In this paper, we establish a local property of 1-planar graphs which describes the structure in the neighborhood of small vertices (i.e. vertices of degree no more than seven). Meanwhile, some new classes of light graphs in 1-planar graphs with the bounded degree are found. Therefore, two open problems presented by Fabrici and Madaras [The structure of 1-planar graphs, Discrete Mathematics, 307, (2007), 854-865] are solved. Furthermore, we prove that each 1-planar graph $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G)$ is acyclically edge $L$-choosable where $L=\max\{2Δ(G)-2,Δ(G)+83\}$.
On some lattice computations related to moduli problems
We show how to solve computationally a combinatorial problem about the possible number of roots orthogonal to a vector of given length in $E_8$. We show that the moduli space of K3 surfaces with polarisation of degree 2d is also of general type for d=52. This case was omitted from the earlier work of Gritsenko, Hulek and the second author. We also apply this method to some related problems. In Appendix A, V. Gritsenko shows how to arrive at the case d=52 and some others directly.
A Note on the Hodge Structure of the Intersection of Coloring Complexes
Let $G$ be a simple graph with $n$ vertices. The coloring complex $Δ(G)$ was defined by Steingrímsson, and the homology of $Δ(G)$ was shown to be nonzero only in dimension $n-3$ by Jonsson. Hanlon recently showed that the Eulerian idempotents provide a decomposition of the homology group $H_{n-3}(Δ(G))$ where the dimension of the $j^{th}$ component in the decomposition, $H_{n-3}^{(j)}(Δ(G))$, equals the absolute value of the coefficient of $λ^{j}$ in the chromatic polynomial of $G$, $χ_{G}(λ)$.
Jonsson recently studied the topology of intersections of coloring complexes. In this note, we show that the coefficient of the ${j}^{th}$ term in the chromatic polynomial of the intersection of coloring complexes gives the Euler Characteristic of the $j^{th}$ Hodge subcomplex of the Hodge decomposition of the intersection of coloring complexes.
