Estimates of the first Dirichlet eigenvalue of graphs
Inspired by the Li--Yau eigenvalue-diameter estimates, we investigate lower bounds for the first Dirichlet eigenvalue in terms of the diameter (or inscribed radius) of a graph. Let $G = (V, E)$ be a graph with boundary $B$. Assume that the interior $Ω= V \setminus B$ is connected. Let $r$ be the inscribed radius of $(G, B)$ and $d$ be the maximum degree of $G$. We prove that $$λ_1(G, B) \geq \frac{d - 1}{r d^r},$$ which can be viewed as an analogue of the Lin--Yau bound and the Meng--Lin bound for normalized Dirichlet/Laplacian eigenvalues. We also derive the inequality $$λ_1(G, B) \geq \frac{1}{r |Ω|}.$$ In particular, for a tree $T$ with at least $3$ vertices, we show that $$λ_1(T) \geq 4 \sin^2 \fracπ{4r + 6} \geq \frac{1}{(r + 1)^2}.$$ Notably, both of the two preceding bounds are sharp up to a constant factor. We additionally examine upper bounds on the first Dirichlet eigenvalue under constraints on the numbers of interior and boundary vertices.
The Intersection Distribution: New Results and Perspectives
Intersection distribution and non-hitting index are concepts introduced recently by Li and Pott as a new way to view the behaviour of a collection of finite field polynomials. With both an algebraic interpretation via the intersection of a polynomial with a set of lines, and a geometric interpretation via a $(q+1)$-set possessing an internal nucleus, the concepts have proved their usefulness as a new way to view various long-standing problems, and have applications in areas such as Kakeya sets. In this paper, by exploiting connections with diverse areas including the theory of algebraic curves, cyclotomy and the enumeration of irreducible polynomials, we establish new results and resolve various Open Problems of Li and Pott. We prove geometric results which shed new light on the relationship between intersection distribution and projective equivalence of polynomials, and algebraic results which describe and characterise the degree of $S_f$ - the index of the largest non-zero entry in the intersection distribution of $f$. We provide new insights into the non-hitting spectrum, and show the limitations of the non-hitting index as a tool for characterisation. Finally, the benefits provided by the connections to other areas are evidenced in two short new proofs of the cubic case.
A Normality Conjecture on Rational Base Number Systems
The rational base number system, introduced by Akiyama, Frougny, and Sakarovitch in 2008, is a generalization of the classical integer base number system. Within this framework two interesting families of infinite words emerge, called minimal and maximal words. We conjecture that every minimal and maximal word is normal over an appropriate subalphabet. To support this conjecture, we present extensive numerical experiments that examine the richness threshold and the discrepancy of these words. We also discuss the implications that the validity of our conjecture would have for several long-standing open problems, including the existence of $Z$-numbers (Mahler, 1968) and $Z_{p/q}$-numbers (Flatto, 1992), the existence of triple expansions in rational base $p/q$ (Akiyama, 2008), and the Collatz-inspired `4/3 problem' (Dubickas and Mossinghoff, 2009).
Tensor Product Decompositions, Limits in Excellent Filtrations, Affine Weyl Group Orbits, and Tableaux Counting
We express the outer multiplicities in the tensor products of two fundamental simple modules for an affine Kac-Moody algebra of type $A$ in terms of counting certain sets of multipartitions by exploring the stabilizing limits of certain excellent filtrations. This extends for all ranks a previously obtained result by Jakelić and the second author for rank $1$. The same outer multiplicities were previously computed by Misra and Wilson in terms of counting certain sets of tableaux. By comparing these two expressions and by explicitly exhibiting a combinatorial description of level-$2$ affine Weyl group orbits, we establish the existence of a bijection between the Misra-Wilson set of tableaux and a disjoint union of certain sets of multipartitions.
Mock modular forms from the k-rank moments
In this paper, the generating functions of Garvans so-called $k$-ranks are used, to define a family of mock Eisenstein series. The $k$-rank moments are then expressed as partition traces of these functions. We explore the modular properties of this new family, give recursive formulas for them involving divisor like sums, and prove that their Fourier coefficient are integral. Furthermore, we show that these functions lie in an algebra that is generated only by derivatives up to a finite order but is nevertheless closed under differentiation. In the process, we also answer a question raised by Bringmann, Pandey and van Ittersum by showing that the divisor like sum $$\left(1-2^{\ell-1} \right) \frac{B_\ell}{2\ell}+ \sum_{2n-1 \geq bm \geq b} (2n-bm)^{\ell-1} q^{mn} - \sum_{m-1 \geq 2bn \geq 2b} (m-2bn)^{\ell-1} q^{mn},$$ has a quasi-completion, when $b\geq 3$ is odd.
On the dimension of the strongly robust complex for configurations in general position
Strongly robust toric ideals are the toric ideals for which the set of indispensable binomials is the Graver basis. The strongly robust simplicial complex $Δ_T$ of a simple toric ideal $I_T$ determines the strongly robust property for all toric ideals that have $I_T$ as their bouquet ideal. We prove that $\text{dim} Δ_T<\text{rank}(T)$ for configurations in general position, partially answering a question posed by Sullivant.
Redicoloring some classes of circulant tournaments
Given a digraph $D$ with no loops, the \textit{dicoloring graph} of $D$, denoted by $\mathcal{D}_k(D)$, is the graph whose vertices are the acyclic $k$-colorings of $D$ and two colorings are adjacent in $\mathcal{D}_k(D)$ if they differ in color on exactly one vertex. In this paper, we prove that there is no expression $φ(\vecχ)$ in terms of the dichromatic number $\vecχ$, such that the graph $\mathcal{D}_k(D)$ is connected for all graphs $D$ and integers $k\geq φ(\vecχ)$. We give conditions for the dicoloring graph of two infinite families of circulant tournaments to be connected, and we provide upper bounds for its diameter. In particular, for the Payley tournament $\vec{C}_{7}(1,2,4)$, also known as $ST_7$, we prove that $\mathcal{D}_k(\vec{C}_{7}(1,2,4))$ is connected and has diameter 8, for each $k\geq 3$.
A functional Loomis-Whitney type inequality in the Heisenberg group and projection theorems over finite fields
We establish functional Loomis--Whitney type inequalities in the finite Heisenberg group $\mathbb{H}^n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. For $n=1$, we determine the sharp region of exponents $(u_1,u_2)$ for which the Heisenberg Loomis--Whitney inequality \[ \frac{1}{q^3}\sum_{(x,t)\in \mathbb{H}^1(\mathbb{F}_q)} f_1(π_1(x,t))\,f_2(π_2(x,t)) \;\lesssim\; \|f_1\|_{L^{u_1}(\mathbb{F}_q^2,dx)}\|f_2\|_{L^{u_2}(\mathbb{F}_q^2,dx)} \] holds uniformly in $q$, namely \[ \frac{1}{u_1}+\frac{2}{u_2}\le 2 \quad\text{and}\quad \frac{2}{u_1}+\frac{1}{u_2}\le 2, \] which includes the endpoint estimate $L^{\frac{3}{2}}\times L^{\frac{3}{2}}\to L^1$. For general $n$, we prove the symmetric multilinear estimate at the endpoint exponent $
u=\frac{n(2n+1)}{n+1}, $
using an induction on $n$ that exploits the Heisenberg fiber structure together with a multilinear interpolation scheme. Specializing to indicator functions yields a sharp Loomis--Whitney type set inequality bounding $|K|$ for every finite $K\subset \mathbb{H}^n(\mathbb{F}_q)$ in terms of the sizes of its $2n$ Heisenberg projections $\{π_j(K)\}_{j=1}^{2n}$, and in particular, \[ \max_{1\le j\le 2n} |π_j(K)| \;\gtrsim_n\; |K|^{\frac{2n+1}{2(n+1)}}\,q^{-\frac{1}{2(n+1)}}. \] This result is optimal up to absolute constants. Moreover, when $n=1$ and $|K|>q$, we obtain a stronger statement via Vinh's point--line incidence theorem. We also discuss connections to a boundedness problem for multilinear forms/operators over finite fields studied by Bhowmik, Iosevich, Koh, and Pham (2025), and to orthogonal projection/covering questions in $\mathbb{F}_q^{2n+1}$ studied by Chen (2018).
Eigenvalues of Universal Covers and the Matching Polynomial
In this work, we prove that the universal and maximal abelian covers of a finite multi-graph have the same eigenvalues. This result strengthens a recent theorem of Li, Magee, Sabri, and Thomas (2025) and answers one of their questions. Our proof builds upon their new characterization of the point spectrum of maximal abelian covers in terms of matching polynomials. It is based on the theory of the matching polynomial and its Gallai-Edmonds decomposition.
Reverse Littlewood--Offord problems with parity conditions
We consider the probability that the random signed sum $ξ_1 v_1 + \dotsb + ξ_n v_n$ lies within a given distance $r$ of the origin, where $v_1,\dotsc,v_n \in \mathbb{R}^d$ are fixed unit vectors and $ξ_1,\dotsc,ξ_n$ are independently and uniformly distributed on $\{-1,+1\}$. In particular, our results demonstrate that, for certain values of $r$, the infimum of this probability is very sensitive to the parity of $n$.
We prove that, for any $d\geq 3$, there is some $\varepsilon = \varepsilon(d) > 0$ such that for any $n \not\equiv d \mod 2$ and unit vectors $v_1,\dotsc,v_n\in \mathbb{R}^d$, there are signs $η_1,\dotsc,η_n \in \{-1,+1\}$ such that $\|\sum_{i=1}^n η_i v_i\| \leq \sqrt{d - \varepsilon}$, and so $\mathbb{P}(\| ξ_1 v_1 + \dotsb + ξ_n v_n \| \leq \sqrt{d-\varepsilon}) > 0$. This is in contrast to the case of $n\equiv d \mod 2$, wherein the above probability can be zero. More is known if $d=2$ and $n$ is odd, and in this case we present a construction demonstrating that $\mathbb{P}(\|ξ_1 v_1 + \dotsb + ξ_n v_n\| \leq 1)$ can decay exponentially as $n$ increases.
A new Boolean matrix representation for Catalan semirings
We construct a faithful representation of the semiring of all order-preserving decreasing transformations of a chain with $n+1$ elements by Boolean upper triangular $n\times n$-matrices.
Embeddings of weighted projective spaces
Let $X$ be a projective toric variety of dimension $n$ and let $L$ be a ample line bundle on $X$. For $k \geq 0$, it is in general difficult to determine whether $L^{\otimes k}$ is very ample and whether it additionally gives a projectively normal embedding. These two properties are equivalent to the very ampleness, respectively normality, of the corresponding polytope. By a result of Ewald-Wessels, both statements are classically known to hold for $k \geq n - 1$.
We study embeddings of weighted projective spaces $\mathbb{P}(a_0, \ldots, a_n)$ via their corresponding rectangular simplices $Δ(λ_1, \ldots, λ_n)$. We give multiple criteria (depending on arithmetic properties of the weights $a_i$) to obtain bounds for the power $k$ which are sharp in many cases. We also introduce combinatorial tools that allow us to systematically construct families exhibiting extremal behaviour. These results extend earlier work of Payne, Hering and Bruns-Gubeladze.
A Tauberian approach to metric scaling limits of random discrete structures, with an application to random planar maps
We prove sandwich theorems and a Tauberian theorem in the space of compact metric measure spaces, endowed with the Gromov-Hausdorff-Prokhorov (GHP) topology. These results hold with respect to a close relative of Gromov's Lipschitz order. As a proof-of-concept of a general method to prove metric scaling limits of random discrete structures, we give an application to the theory of random planar maps: the Brownian sphere is the scaling limit in the GHP topology of irreducible quandrangulations. Our main inputs are (i) the convergence of general quadrangulations to the Brownian sphere (Le Gall, 2013; Miermont, 2013); and (ii) couplings where irreducible quadrangulations of the hexagon are "grown" by face-openings (Addario-Berry, 2014).
Vanishing theorems for combinatorial geometries
We establish strong vanishing theorems for line bundles on wonderful varieties of hyperplane arrangements, and we show that the resulting positivity properties of Euler characteristics extend to all matroids. We achieve this by showing that every degeneration of a wonderful variety within the permutohedral toric variety is reduced and Cohen--Macaulay. The same holds for a larger class of subschemes in products of projective lines that we call "kindred," which are characterized by matroidal Hilbert polynomials. Our results give a new proof of the 20-year-old f-vector conjecture of Speyer and resolve the conjecture of Tohaneanu that higher order Orlik--Terao algebras are Cohen--Macaulay.
Quantum walks on finite and bounded infinite graphs
A weighted graph $G$ with countable vertex set is bounded if there is an upper bound on the maximum of the sum of absolute values of all edge weights incident to a vertex in $G$. In this paper, we prove a fundamental result on equitable partitions of bounded weighted graphs with twin subgraphs and use this fact to construct finite and bounded infinite graphs with pair and plus state transfer with the adjacency matrix as a Hamiltonian. We show that for each $k \ge 3$, (i) there are infinitely many connected unweighted graphs with maximum degree $k$ admitting pair state transfer at $τ\in\{\fracπ{\sqrt{2}},\fracπ{2}\}$, and (ii) there are infinitely many signed graphs with exactly one negative edge weight and whose underlying unweighted graphs have maximum degree $k$ admitting plus state transfer at $τ\in\{\fracπ{\sqrt{2}},\fracπ{2}\}$. Parallel results are proven for perfect state transfer between a plus state and a pair state, and for the existence of sedentary pair and plus states. We further prove that almost all connected unweighted finite planar graphs admit pair state transfer at $τ\in\{\fracπ{\sqrt{2}},\fracπ{2}\}$, and almost all connected unweighted finite planar graphs can be assigned a single negative edge weight resulting in plus state transfer, or perfect state transfer between a plus state and a pair state, at $τ\in\{\fracπ{\sqrt{2}},\fracπ{2}\}$. Analogous results are shown to hold for unweighted finite trees. Using blow-up graphs, Cayley graphs and graphs with tails, we construct new infinite families of (finite and infinite) unweighted graphs and signed graphs admitting pair or plus state transfer.
Characterizing Graphs as Algebraic Squares
Graphs that are squares under the gluing algebra arise in the study of homomorphism density inequalities such as Sidorenko's conjecture. Recent work has focused on these homomorphism density applications. This paper takes a new perspective and focuses on the graph properties of arbitrary square graphs, not only those relevant to homomorphism conjectures and theorems.
We develop a set of necessary and/or sufficient conditions for a graph to be square. We apply these conditions to categorize several classical families of graphs as square or not. In addition, we create infinite families of square graphs by proving that joins and Cartesian, direct, strong, and lexicographic products of square graphs with arbitrary graphs are square.
Colourings of Uniform Group Divisible Designs and Maximum Packings
A weak $c$-colouring of a design is an assignment of colours to its points from a set of $c$ available colours, such that there are no monochromatic blocks. A colouring of a design is block-equitable, if for each block, the number of points coloured with any available pair of colours differ by at most one. Weak and block-equitable colourings of balanced incomplete block designs have been previously considered. In this paper, we extend these concepts to group divisible designs (GDDs) and packing designs. We first determine when a $k$-GDD of type $g^u$ can have a block-equitable $c$-colouring. We then give a direct construction of maximum block-equitable $2$-colourable packings with block size $4$; a recursive construction has previously appeared in the literature. We also generalise a bound given in the literature for the maximum size of block-equitably $2$-colourable packings to $c>2$. Furthermore, we establish the asymptotic existence of uniform $k$-GDDs with arbitrarily many groups and arbitrary chromatic numbers (with the exception of $c=2$ and $k=3$). A structural analysis of $2$- and $3$-uniform $3$-GDDs obtained from 4-chromatic STS$(v)$ where $v\in\{21,25,27,33,37,39\}$ is given. We briefly discuss weak colourings of packings, and finish by considering some further constraints on weak colourings of GDDs, namely requiring all groups to be either monochromatic or equitably coloured.
Signed network models for portfolio optimization
In this work, we consider weighted signed network representations of financial markets derived from raw or denoised correlation matrices, and examine how negative edges can be exploited to reduce portfolio risk. We then propose a discrete optimization scheme that reduces the asset selection problem to a desired size by building a time series of signed networks based on asset returns. To benchmark our approach, we consider two standard allocation strategies: Markowitz's mean-variance optimization and the 1/N equally weighted portfolio. Both methods are applied on the reduced universe as well as on the full universe, using two datasets: (i) the Market Champions dataset, consisting of 21 major S&P500 companies over the 2020-2024 period, and (ii) a dataset of 199 assets comprising all S&P500 constituents with stock prices available and aligned with Google's data. Empirical results show that portfolios constructed via our signed network selection perform as good as those from classical Markowitz model and the equal-weight benchmark in most occasions.
Closing paths to cycles in symmetric graphs
It was shown by Beisegel, Chudnovsky, Gurvich, Milanič, and Servatius in 2022 that every induced $2$-edge path in a vertex-transitive graph closes to an induced cycle. Similar results were obtained for 3-edge paths closing to cycles in edge-transitive graphs, where the cycle can be assumed to be induced if the path is induced. Motivated by these results, we consider the following problem: For a given class of graphs, determine all integers $\ell\geq 0$ such that for every graph in the class, every path of length at most $\ell$ closes to a cycle. We also consider the variant of the problem for induced paths closing to induced cycles. We completely solve these problems for the classes of (finite) vertex-transitive graphs, edge-transitive graphs, and edge-transitive graphs that are not stars. For all but one case of a negative answer, we provide infinite families of connected counterexamples.
The Turán number of Berge matchings
Given a graph $F$, an $r$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{H}$ is a {\em Berge-$F$} if there is a bijection $φ:E(F)\to E(\mathcal{H})$ such that $e\subseteq φ(e)$ for each $e\in E(F)$. Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of $r$-uniform hypergraphs, an $r$-uniform hypergraph is $\mathcal{F}$-free if it does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subhypergraph. The Turán number of $\mathcal{F}$ is the maximum number of hyperedges in an $\mathcal{F}$-free $r$-graph on $n$ vertices. Let $M_{s+1}$ denote a matching of size $s+1$, i.e., the graph consisting of $s+1$ independent edges. Khormali and Palmer [\textit{European J. Combin.} 102 (2022) 103506] completely determined the Turán number of Berge matchings for sufficiently large $n$. Subsequently, Kang, Ni, and Shan [\textit{Discrete Math.} 345 (2022) 112901] determined the exact value of the Turán number of Berge-$M_{s+1}$ for all $n$ when $r \le s-1$ or $r \ge 2s+2$. In this paper, we settle the final open case $s \le r \le 2s+1$, thereby completing the determination of the Turán number of Berge matchings.
