On the number of neighborly simplices in R^d
Published • View PublicationBIB
Two $d$-dimensional simplices in $R^d$ are neighborly if its intersection is a $(d-1)$-dimensional set. A family of $d$-dimensional simplices in $R^d$ is called neighborly if every two simplices of the family are neighborly. Let $S_d$ be the maximal cardinality of a neighborly family of $d$-dimensional simplices in $R^d$. Based on the structure of some codes $V\subset \{0,1,*\}^n$ it is shown that $\lim_{d\rightarrow \infty}(2^{d+1}-S_d)=\infty$. Moreover, a result on the structure of codes $V\subset \{0,1,*\}^n$ is given.

Polychromatic Colorings of Geometric Hypergraphs via Shallow Hitting Sets
A range family $\mathcal{R}$ is a family of subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$, like all halfplanes, or all unit disks. Given a range family $\mathcal{R}$, we consider the $m$-uniform range capturing hypergraphs $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ whose vertex-sets $V$ are finite sets of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ with any $m$ vertices forming a hyperedge $e$ whenever $e = V \cap R$ for some $R \in \mathcal{R}$. Given additionally an integer $k \geq 2$, we seek to find the minimum $m = m_{\mathcal{R}}(k)$ such that every $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ admits a polychromatic $k$-coloring of its vertices, that is, where every hyperedge contains at least one point of each color. Clearly, $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) \geq k$ and the gold standard is an upper bound $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) = O(k)$ that is linear in $k$. A $t$-shallow hitting set in $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ is a subset $S \subseteq V$ such that $1 \leq |e \cap S| \leq t$ for each hyperedge $e$; i.e., every hyperedge is hit at least once but at most $t$ times by $S$. We show for several range families $\mathcal{R}$ the existence of $t$-shallow hitting sets in every $\mathcal{H}(V,\mathcal{R},m)$ with $t$ being a constant only depending on $\mathcal{R}$. This in particular proves that $m_{\mathcal{R}}(k) \leq tk = O(k)$ in such cases, improving previous polynomial bounds in $k$. Particularly, we prove this for the range families of all axis-aligned strips in $\mathbb{R}^d$, all bottomless and topless rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$, and for all unit-height axis-aligned rectangles in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

On the Diameter of Finite Sidon Sets
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the diameter of a Sidon set (also known as a Babcock sequence, Golomb ruler, or $B_2$ set) with $k$ elements is at least $k^2-b k^{3/2}-O(k)$ where $b\le 1.96365$, a comparatively large improvement on past results. Equivalently, a Sidon set with diameter $n$ has at most $n^{1/2}+0.98183n^{1/4}+O(1)$ elements. The proof is conceptually simple but very computationally intensive, and the proof uses substantial computer assistance. We also provide a proof of $b\le 1.99058$ that can be verified by hand, which still improves on past results. Finally, we prove that $g$-thin Sidon sets (aka $g$-Golomb rulers) with $k$ elements have diameter at least $g^{-1} k^2 - (2-\varepsilon)g^{-1}k^{3/2} - O(k)$, with $\varepsilon\ge 0.02g^{-2}$.

Combined exponential patterns in multiplicative $IP^{\star}$ sets
$IP$ sets play fundamental role in arithmetic Ramsey theory. A set is called an additive $IP$ set if it is of the form $FS\left(\langle x_{n}\rangle_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\right)=\left\{ \sum_{t\in H}x_{t}:H\right.$ is a nonempty finite subset of $\left.\mathbb{N}\right\}$, whereas it is called a multiplicative $IP$ set if it is of the form $FP\left(\langle x_{n}\rangle_{n\in \mathbb{N}}\right)=\left\{ \prod_{t\in H}x_{t}:H\right.$ is a nonempty finite subset of $\left. \mathbb{N}\right\}$ for some injective sequence $\langle x_{n}\rangle_{n\in \mathbb{N}}.$ An additive $IP^{\star}$ (resp. multiplicative $IP^{\star}$) set is a set which intersects every additive $IP$ set (resp. multiplicative $IP$ set). In \cite{key-1}, V. Bergelson and N. Hindman studied how rich additive $IP^{\star}$ sets are. They proved additive $IP^{\star}$ sets ($AIP^{\star}$ in short) contain finite sums and finite products of a single sequence. An analogous study was made by A. Sisto in\cite{key-3}, where he proved that multiplicative $IP^{\star}$ sets ($MIP^{\star}$ in short) contain exponential tower\footnote{will be defined later} and finite product of a single sequence. However exponential patterns can be defined in two different ways. In this article we will prove that $MIP^{\star}$ sets contain two different exponential patterns and finite product of a single sequence. This immediately improves the result of A. Sisto. We also construct a $MIP^\star$ set, not arising from the recurrence of measurable dynamical systems. Throughout our work we will use the machinery of the algebra of the Stone-Čech Compactification of $\mathbb{N}$.

Random generation of subgroups of the modular group with a fixed isomorphism type
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show how to efficiently count and generate uniformly at random finitely generated subgroups of the modular group $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ of a given isomorphism type. The method to achieve these results relies on a natural map of independent interest, which associates with any finitely generated subgroup of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$ a graph which we call its silhouette, and which can be interpreted as a conjugacy class of free finite index subgroups of $\textsf{PSL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$.

Total positivity for matroid Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We define the totally nonnegative matroid Schubert variety $\mathcal Y_V$ of a linear subspace $V \subset \mathbb R^n$. We show that $\mathcal Y_V$ is a regular CW complex homeomorphic to a closed ball, with strata indexed by pairs of acyclic flats of the oriented matroid of $V$. This closely resembles the regularity theorem for totally nonnegative generalized flag varieties. As a corollary, we obtain a regular CW structure on the real matroid Schubert variety of $V$.

More on $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families for vector spaces
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $V$ be a finite dimensional vector space over a finite field. Suppose that $\mathscr{F}_1$, $\mathscr{F}_2$, $\dots$, $\mathscr{F}_r$ are $r$-cross $t$-intersecting families of $k$-subspaces of $V$. In this paper, we determine the extremal structure when $\prod_{i=1}^r|\mathscr{F}_i|$ is maximum under the condition that $\dim(\bigcap_{F\in\mathscr{F}_i}F)<t$ for each $i$.

A guide to Penrose tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
The aim of this book is to provide an elementary introduction, complete with detailed proofs, to the celebrated tilings of the plane discovered by Sir Roger Penrose in the `70s. The book covers many aspects of Penrose tilings, including the study of the space parameterizing Penrose tilings from the point of view of Connes' Noncommutative Geometry.

Same average in every direction
Given a polytope $P\subset R^3$ and a non-zero vector $z \in R^3$, the plane $\{x\in R^3:zx=t\}$ intersects $P$ in convex polygon $P(z,t)$ for $t \in [t^-,t^+]$ where $t^-=\min \{zx: x \in P\}$ and $t^+=\max \{zx: x\in P\}$, $zx$ is the scalar product of $z,x \in R^3$. Let $A(P,z)$ denote the average number of vertices of $P(z,t)$ on the interval $[t^-,t^+]$. For what polytopes is $A(P,z)$ a constant independent of $z$?

The threshold for powers of tight Hamilton cycles in random hypergraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate the occurrence of powers of tight Hamilton cycles in random hypergraphs. For every $r\ge 3$ and $k\ge 1$, we show that there exists a constant $C > 0$ such that if $p=p(n) \ge Cn^{-1/\binom{k+r-2}{r-1}}$ then asymptotically almost surely the random hypergraph $H^{(r)}(n,p)$ contains the $k$th power of a tight Hamilton cycle. This improves on a result of Parczyk and Person, who proved the same result under the assumption $p=ω\left(n^{-1/\binom{k+r-2}{r-1}}\right)$ using a second moment argument.

Perfect codes in 2-valent Cayley digraphs on abelian groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a digraph $Γ$, a subset $C$ of $V(Γ)$ is a perfect code if $C$ is a dominating set such that every vertex of $Γ$ is dominated by exactly one vertex in $C$. In this paper, we classify strongly connected 2-valent Cayley digraphs on abelian groups admitting a perfect code, and determine completely all perfect codes of such digraphs.

Counting triangles in graphs without vertex disjoint odd cycles
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given two graphs $H$ and $F$, the maximum possible number of copies of $H$ in an $F$-free graph on $n$ vertices is denoted by $\mathrm{ex}(n, H, F)$. Let $(\ell+1) \cdot F$ denote $\ell+1$ vertex disjoint copies of $F$. In this paper, we determine the exact value of $\mathrm{ex}(n, C_3, (\ell+1)\cdot C_{2k+1})$ and its extremal graph, which generalizes some known results.

Simple Constructions of Unique Neighbor Expanders from Error-correcting Codes
In this note, we give very simple constructions of unique neighbor expander graphs starting from spectral or combinatorial expander graphs of mild expansion. These constructions and their analysis are simple variants of the constructions of LDPC error-correcting codes from expanders, given by Sipser-Spielman [SS96] (and Tanner [Tan81]), and their analysis. We also show how to obtain expanders with many unique neighbors using similar ideas. There were many exciting results on this topic recently, starting with Asherov-Dinur [AD23] and Hsieh-McKenzie-Mohanty-Paredes [HMMP23], who gave a similar construction of unique neighbor expander graphs, but using more sophisticated ingredients (such as almost-Ramanujan graphs) and a more involved analysis. Subsequent beautiful works of Cohen-Roth-TaShma [CRT23] and Golowich [Gol23] gave even stronger objects (lossless expanders), but also using sophisticated ingredients. The main contribution of this work is that we get much more elementary constructions of unique neighbor expanders and with a simpler analysis.

Observations on Graph Invariants with the Lovász $\vartheta$-Function
Published in AIMS Mathematics, 9 (2024), no. 6, pp. 15385--15468, April 2024 • View PublicationBIB
This paper delves into three research directions, leveraging the Lovász $\vartheta$-function of a graph. First, it focuses on the Shannon capacity of graphs, providing new results that determine the capacity for two infinite subclasses of strongly regular graphs, and extending prior results. The second part explores cospectral and nonisomorphic graphs, drawing on a work by Berman and Hamud (2024), and it derives related properties of two types of joins of graphs. For every even integer such that $n \geq 14$, it is constructively proven that there exist connected, irregular, cospectral, and nonisomorphic graphs on $n$ vertices, being jointly cospectral with respect to their adjacency, Laplacian, signless Laplacian, and normalized Laplacian matrices, while also sharing identical independence, clique, and chromatic numbers, but being distinguished by their Lovász $\vartheta$-functions. The third part focuses on establishing bounds on graph invariants, particularly emphasizing strongly regular graphs and triangle-free graphs, and compares the tightness of these bounds to existing ones. The paper derives spectral upper and lower bounds on the vector and strict vector chromatic numbers of regular graphs, providing sufficient conditions for the attainability of these bounds. Exact closed-form expressions for the vector and strict vector chromatic numbers are derived for all strongly regular graphs and for all graphs that are vertex- and edge-transitive, demonstrating that these two types of chromatic numbers coincide for every such graph. This work resolves a query regarding the variant of the $\vartheta$-function by Schrijver and the identical function by McEliece et al. It shows, by a counterexample, that the $\vartheta$-function variant by Schrijver does not possess the property of the Lovász $\vartheta$-function of forming an upper bound on the Shannon capacity of a graph.

Block partitions in higher dimensions
Consider a set $X\subseteq \mathbb{R}^d$ which is 1-dense, namely, it intersects every unit ball. We show that we can get from any point to any other point in $\mathbb{R}^d$ in $n$ steps so that the intermediate points are in $X$, and the discrepancy of the step vectors is at most $2\sqrt{2}$, or formally, $$\sup\limits_{\substack{n\in \mathbb{Z}^+,\ t\in \mathbb{R}^d\\ X\text{ is 1-dense}}}\,\, \inf\limits_{\substack{p_1,\ldots, p_{n-1}\in X\\ p_0=\underline{0},\ p_n=t}}\,\, \max\limits_{0\leq i<j<n} \big\|(p_{i+1}-p_i)-(p_{j+1}-p_j)\big\|\leq 2\sqrt{2}.$$

Asymptotic independence for random permutations from surface groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $X$ be an orientable hyperbolic surface of genus $g\geq 2$ with a marked point $o$, and let $Γ$ be an orientable hyperbolic surface group isomorphic to $π_{1}(X,o)$. Consider the space $\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$ which corresponds to $n$-sheeted covers of $X$ with labeled fiber. Given $γ\inΓ$ and a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$, what is the expected number of fixed points of $φ(γ)$? Formally, let $F_{n}(γ)$ denote the number of fixed points of $φ(γ)$ for a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We think of $F_{n}(γ)$ as a random variable on the space $\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We show that an arbitrary fixed number of products of the variables $F_{n}(γ)$ are asymptotically independent as $n\to\infty$ when there are no obvious obstructions. We also determine the limiting distribution of such products. Additionally, we examine short cycle statistics in random permutations of the form $φ(γ)$ for a uniformly random $φ\in\text{Hom}(Γ,S_{n})$. We show a similar asymptotic independence result and determine the limiting distribution.

The Simultaneous Lattice Packing-Covering Constant of Octahedra

This paper proves that the simultaneous lattice packing-covering constant of an octahedron is $7/6$. In other words, $7/6$ is the smallest positive number $r$ such that for every octahedron $O$ centered at the origin there is a lattice $Λ$ such that $O+Λ$ is a packing in $\mathbb{E}^3$ and $rO+Λ$ is a covering of $\mathbb{E}^3$.

Oriented trees and paths in digraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Which conditions ensure that a digraph contains all oriented paths of some given length, or even a all oriented trees of some given size, as a subgraph? One possible condition could be that the host digraph is a tournament of a certain order. In arbitrary digraphs and oriented graphs, conditions on the chromatic number, on the edge density, on the minimum outdegree and on the minimum semidegree have been proposed. In this survey, we review the known results, and highlight some open questions in the area.

Conant's Metric Spectra Problem
In this paper, we try to minimize the scope of possible unique metric spectra up to equivalence. While it is well known that every spectra $S\subseteq \mathbb{R}^+$ is equivalent to a spectra $T\subseteq \mathbb{N}$, it has remained open if $T$ could also maintain a desirable combinatorial form. Conant questioned if $T= \{t_1,...,t_n \}_{<}$ could be taken such that $2^i-1 \leq t_i \leq 2^n -1$. In this paper, we come to two partial answers. The first is that the largest element $t_n$ can be chosen such that $t_n\leq 2^n $. Approximating a full solution, we also observe $T$ with the combinatorial form $2^i \leq t_i \leq 2^{n+1}$. Our methods are rather unique in the field as we utilize linear optimization and polygonal geometry to achieve our results. Our work aims to approach a full characterization of metric spectra, and simplify future computational endeavors in the field.

New examples of self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 derived from 2-(47,23,11) designs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper [M. Araya, M. Harada, Some restrictions on the weight enumerators of near-extremal ternary self-dual codes and quaternary Hermitian self-dual codes, Des. Codes Cryptogr., 91 (2023), 1813--1843], Araya and Harada gave examples of self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for $145$ distinct values of the number $A_{12}$ of codewords of minimum weight 12, and raised the question about the existence of codes for other values of $A_{12}$. In this note, we use symmetric 2-$(47,23,11)$ designs with an automorphism group of order 6 to construct self-dual near-extremal ternary codes of length 48 for $150$ new values of $A_{12}$.
