Split Hopf algebras, quasi-shuffle algebras, and the cohomology of Omega Sigma X
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let A and B be two connected graded commutative k-algebras of finite type, where k is a perfect field of positive characteristic p. We prove that the quasi--shuffle algebras generated by A and B are isomorphic as Hopf algebras if and only if A and B are isomorphic as graded k-vector spaces equipped with a Frobenius (pth-power) map. For the hardest part of this analysis, we work with the dual construction, and are led to study connected graded cocommutative Hopf algebras H with two additional properties: H is free as an associative algebra, and the projection onto the indecomposables is split as a morphism of graded k-vector spaces equipped with a Verschiebung map. Building on work on non-commutative Witt vectors by Goerss, Lannes, and Morel, we classify such free, `split' Hopf algebras. A topological consequence is that, if X is a based path connected space, then the Hopf algebra H^*(Omega Sigma X;k) is determined by the stable homotopy type of X. We also discuss the much easier analogous characteristic 0 results, and give a characterization of when our quasi--shuffle algebras are polynomial, generalizing the so-called Ditters conjecture.

A sheaf-theoretic approach to tropical homology
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a sheaf-theoretic approach to tropical homology, especially for tropical homology with potentially non-compact supports. Our setup is suited to study the functorial properties of tropical homology, and we show that it behaves analogously to classical Borel-Moore homology in the sense that there are proper push-forwards, cross products, and cup products with tropical cohomology classes, and that it satisfies identities like the projection formula and the Künneth theorem. Our framework allows for a natural definition of the tropical cycle class map, which we show to be a natural transformation. Finally, we prove Poincaré-Verdier duality over the integers on tropical manifolds.

On the coproduct in affine Schubert calculus
Published • View PublicationBIB
The cohomology of the affine flag variety of a complex reductive group is a comodule over the cohomology of the affine Grassmannian. We give positive formulae for the coproduct of an affine Schubert class in terms of affine Stanley classes and finite Schubert classes, in (torus-equivariant) cohomology and K-theory. As an application, we deduce monomial positivity for the affine Schubert polynomials of the second author.
The Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture and higher rank Brill--Noether theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we compute the cohomology class of certain "special maximal-rank loci" originally defined by Aprodu and Farkas. By showing that such classes are nonzero, we are able to verify the non-emptiness portion of the Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture in a wide range of cases. As an application, we obtain new evidence for the existence portion of a well-known conjecture due to Bertram, Feinberg and independently Mukai in higher-rank Brill--Noether theory.

Abelian tropical covers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathfrak{A}$ be a finite abelian group. In this article, we classify harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers of a tropical curve $Γ$ (which allow dilation along edges and at vertices) in terms of the cohomology group of a suitably defined sheaf on $Γ$. We give a realizability criterion for harmonic $\mathfrak{A}$-covers by patching local monodromy data in an extended homology group on $Γ$. As an explicit example, we work out the case $\mathfrak{A}=\mathbb{Z}/p\mathbb{Z}$ and explain how realizability for such covers is related to the nowhere-zero flow problem from graph theory.
The A.B.C.Ds of Schubert calculus
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, B85a (2020), 12 pp • Search Publication
We collect Atiyah-Bott Combinatorial Dreams (A.B.C.Ds) in Schubert calculus. One result relates equivariant structure coefficients for two isotropic flag manifolds, with consequences to the thesis of C. Monical. We contextualize using work of N. Bergeron-F. Sottile, S. Billey-M. Haiman, P. Pragacz, and T. Ikeda-L. Mihalcea-I. Naruse. The relation complements a theorem of A. Kresch-H. Tamvakis in quantum cohomology. Results of A. Buch-V. Ravikumar rule out a similar correspondence in K-theory.

ECH capacities, Ehrhart theory, and toric varieties
Published in Journal of Symplectic Geometry, 19(2), 475-506. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
ECH capacities were developed by Hutchings to study embedding problems for symplectic $4$-manifolds with boundary. They have found especial success in the case of certain toric symplectic manifolds where many of the computations resemble calculations found in cohomology of $\mathbb{Q}$-line bundles on toric varieties, or in lattice point counts for rational polytopes. We formalise this observation in the case of convex toric lattice domains $X_Ω$ by constructing a natural polarised toric variety $(Y_{Σ(Ω)},D_Ω)$ containing the all the information of the ECH capacities of $X_Ω$ in purely algebro-geometric terms. Applying the Ehrhart theory of the polytopes involved in this construction gives some new results in the combinatorialisation and asymptotics of ECH capacities for convex toric domains.

Bass numbers of local cohomology of cover ideals of graphs
We develop splitting techniques to study Lyubeznik numbers of cover ideals of graphs which allow us to describe them for large families of graphs including forests, cycles, wheels and cactus graphs. More generally we are able to compute all the Bass numbers and the shape of the injective resolution of local cohomology modules by considering the connected components of the corresponding subgraphs. Indeed our method gives us a very simple criterion for the vanishing of these local cohomology modules in terms of the connected components.

Positivity determines the quantum cohomology of Grassmannians
We prove that if X is a Grassmannian of type A, then the Schubert basis of the (small) quantum cohomology ring QH(X) is the only homogeneous deformation of the Schubert basis of the ordinary cohomology ring of X that multiplies with non-negative structure constants. This implies that the (three point, genus zero) Gromov-Witten invariants of X are uniquely determined by Witten's presentation of QH(X) and the fact that they are non-negative. We conjecture that the same is true for any flag variety X = G/P of simply laced Lie type. For the variety GL(n)/B of complete flags, this conjecture is equivalent to Fomin, Gelfand, and Postnikov's conjecture that the quantum Schubert polynomials of type A are uniquely determined by positivity properties. Our proof for Grassmannians answers a question of Fulton.

A survey of recent developments on Hessenberg varieties
This article surveys recent developments on Hessenberg varieties, emphasizing some of the rich connections of their cohomology and combinatorics. In particular, we will see how hyperplane arrangements, representations of symmetric groups, and Stanley's chromatic symmetric functions are related to the cohomology rings of Hessenberg varieties. We also include several other topics on Hessenberg varieties to cover recent developments.

Cohomology of moduli spaces of Del Pezzo surfaces
We compute the rational Betti cohomology groups of the coarse moduli spaces of geometrically marked Del Pezzo surfaces of degree three and four as representations of the Weyl groups of the corresponding root systems. The proof uses a blend of methods from point counting over finite fields and techniques from arrangement complements.

Spanning subspace configurations
A {\em spanning configuration} in the complex vector space $\mathbb{C}^k$ is a sequence $(W_1, \dots, W_r)$ of linear subspaces of $\mathbb{C}^k$ such that $W_1 + \cdots + W_r = \mathbb{C}^k$. We present the integral cohomology of the moduli space of spanning configurations in $\mathbb{C}^k$ corresponding to a given sequence of subspace dimensions. This simultaneously generalizes the classical presentation of the cohomology of partial flag varieties and the more recent presentation of a variety of spanning line configurations defined by the author and Pawlowski. This latter variety of spanning line configurations plays the role of the flag variety for the Haglund-Remmel-Wilson Delta Conjecture of symmetric function theory.

Bad drawings of small complete graphs
We show that for $K_5$ (resp.~ $K_{3,3}$) there is a drawing with $i$ independent crossings, and no pair of independent edges cross more than once, provided $i$ is odd with $1\le i\le 15$ (resp.~ $1\le i\le 17$). Conversely, using the deleted product cohomology, we show that for $K_5$ and $K_{3,3}$, if $A$ is any set of pairs of independent edges, and $A$ has odd cardinality, then there is a drawing in the plane for which each element in $A$ cross an odd number of times, while each pair of independent edges not in $A$ cross an even number of times. For $K_6$ we show that there is a drawing with $i$ independent crossings, and no pair of independent edges cross more than once, if and only if $3\le i\le 40$.

Universal graph Schubert varieties
We consider the loci of invertible linear maps $f : \mathbb{C}^n \to {(\mathbb{C}^n)}^*$ together with pairs of flags $(E_\bullet, F_\bullet)$ in $\mathbb{C}^n$ such that the various restrictions $f : F_j \to E_i^*$ have specified ranks. Identifying an invertible linear map with its graph viewed as a point in a Grassmannian, we show that the closures of these loci have cohomology classes represented by the back-stable Schubert polynomials of Lam, Lee, and Shimozono. As a special case, we recover the result of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer that Stanley symmetric functions represent the classes of graph Schubert varieties. We consider similar loci where $f$ is restricted to be symmetric or skew-symmetric. Their classes are now given by back-stable versions of the polynomials introduced by Wyser and Yong to represent classes of orbit closures for the orthogonal and symplectic groups acting on the type A flag variety. Using degeneracy locus formulas of Kazarian and of Anderson and Fulton, we obtain new Pfaffian formulas for these polynomials in the vexillary case. We also give a geometric interpretation of the involution Stanley symmetric functions of Hamaker, Marberg, and the author: they represent classes of involution graph Schubert varieties in isotropic Grassmannians.

Higher Whitehead products in moment-angle complexes and substitution of simplicial complexes
Published in Proceedings of the Steklov Institute of Mathematics 305 (2019), 1-21 • View PublicationBIB
We study the question of realisability of iterated higher Whitehead products with a given form of nested brackets by simplicial complexes, using the notion of the moment-angle complex $Z_K$. Namely, we say that a simplicial complex $K$ realises an iterated higher Whitehead product $w$ if $w$ is a nontrivial element of $π_*(Z_K)$. The combinatorial approach to the question of realisability uses the operation of substitution of simplicial complexes: for any iterated higher Whitehead product $w$ we describe a simplicial complex $\partialΔ_w$ that realises $w$. Furthermore, for a particular form of brackets inside $w$, we prove that $\partialΔ_w$ is the smallest complex that realises $w$. We also give a combinatorial criterion for the nontriviality of the product $w$. In the proof of nontriviality we use the Hurewicz image of $w$ in the cellular chains of $Z_K$ and the description of the cohomology product of $Z_K$. The second approach is algebraic: we use the coalgebraic versions of the Koszul and Taylor complex for the face coalgebra of $K$ to describe the canonical cycles corresponding to iterated higher Whitehead products $w$. This gives another criterion for realisability of $w$.

Schubert Derivations on the Infinite Wedge Power
The {\em Schubert derivation} is a distinguished Hasse-Schmidt derivation on the exterior algebra of a free abelian group, encoding the formalism of Schubert calculus for all Grassmannians at once. The purpose of this paper is to extend the Schubert derivation to the infinite exterior power of a free ${\mathbb Z}$-module of infinite rank (fermionic Fock space). Classical vertex operators naturally arise from the {\em integration by parts formula}, that also recovers the generating function occurring in the {\em bosonic vertex representation} of the Lie algebra $gl_\infty({\mathbb Z})$, due to Date, Jimbo, Kashiwara and Miwa (DJKM). In the present framework, the DJKM result will be interpreted as a limit case of the following general observation: the singular cohomology of the complex Grassmannian $G(r,n)$ is an irreducible representation of the Lie algebra of $n\times n$ square matrices.}

Quasi-homogeneity of the moduli space of stable maps to homogeneous spaces (II)
Let $G$ be a connected, simply connected, simple, complex, linear algebraic group. Let $P$ be an arbitrary parabolic subgroup of $G$. Let $X=G/P$ be the $G$-homogeneous projective space attached to this situation. Let $d\in H_2(X)$ be a degree. Let $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ be the (coarse) moduli space of three pointed genus zero stable maps to $X$ of degree $d$. Building on and improving our previous results [Christoph Bärligea, Quasi-Homogeneity of the Moduli Space of Stable Maps to Homogeneous Spaces, Doc. Math. 23, 697-745 (2018), DOI: 10.25537/dm.2018v23.697-745], we prove that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $\operatorname{Aut}(X)$ for all minimal degrees $d$ in $H_2(X)$. By a minimal degree in $H_2(X)$, we mean a degree $d\in H_2(X)$ which is minimal with the property that $q^d$ occurs (with non-zero coefficient) in the quantum product $σ_u\starσ_v$ of two Schubert classes $σ_u$ and $σ_v$, where $\star$ denotes the product in the (small) quantum cohomology ring $\mathit{QH}^*(X)$ attached to $X$. Along the way, we prove that $\overline{M}_{0,3}(X,d)$ is quasi-homogeneous under the action of $G$ for all minimal degrees $d$ in $H_2(X)$ except for one instance of $G$, $P$ and $d$ which occurs in type $\mathsf{G}_2$.
The volume polynomial of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties and the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope
Regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ arising naturally in the intersection of geometry, representation theory, and combinatorics. Recent results of Abe-Horiguchi-Masuda-Murai-Sato and Abe-DeDieu-Galetto-Harada relate the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties to the volume polynomial of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope $\mathrm{GZ}(λ)$ for $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$. The main results of this manuscript use and generalize tools developed by Anderson-Tymoczko, Kiritchenko-Smirnov-Timorin, and Postnikov, in order to derive an explicit formula for the volume polynomials of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties in terms of the volumes of certain faces of the Gelfand-Zetlin polytope, and also exhibit a manifestly positive, combinatorial formula for their coefficients with respect to the basis of monomials in the $α_i := λ_i-λ_{i+1}$. In addition, motivated by these considerations, we carefully analyze the special case of the permutohedral variety, which is also known as the toric variety associated to Weyl chambers. In this case, we obtain an explicit decomposition of the permutohedron (the moment map image of the permutohedral variety) into combinatorial $(n-1)$-cubes, and also give a geometric interpretation of this decomposition by expressing the cohomology class of the permutohedral variety in $\mathrm{Flag}(\mathbb{C}^n)$ as a sum of the cohomology classes of a certain set of Richardson varieties.

Upper-triangular linear relations on multiplicities and the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture
In 2015, Brosnan and Chow, and independently Guay-Paquet, proved the Shareshian-Wachs conjecture, which links the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in combinatorics to the geometry of Hessenberg varieties through Tymoczko's permutation group action on the cohomology ring of regular semisimple Hessenberg varieties. In previous work, the authors exploited this connection to prove a refined (graded) version of the Stanley-Stembridge conjecture in a special case. In this manuscript, we derive a new set of linear relations satisfied by the multiplicities of certain permutation representations in Tymoczko's representation. We also show that these relations are upper-triangular in an appropriate sense, and in particular, they uniquely determine the multiplicities. As an application of these results, we prove an inductive formula for the multiplicity coefficients corresponding to partitions with a maximal number of parts. It follows from our formula that these coefficients are non-negative, thus giving additional positive evidence for the graded Stanley--Stembridge conjecture in the general case.

Restricting Schubert classes to symplectic Grassmannians using self-dual puzzles
Given a Schubert class on $Gr(k,V)$ where $V$ is a symplectic vector space of dimension $2n$, we consider its restriction to the symplectic Grassmannian $SpGr(k,V)$ of isotropic subspaces. Pragacz gave tableau formulae for positively computing the expansion of these $H^*(Gr(k,V))$ classes into Schubert classes of the target when $k=n$, which corresponds to expanding Schur polynomials into $Q$-Schur polynomials. Coskun described an algorithm for their expansion when $k\leq n$. We give a puzzle-based formula for these expansions, while extending them to equivariant cohomology. We make use of a new observation that usual Grassmannian puzzle pieces are already enough to do some $2$-step Schubert calculus, and apply techniques from quantum integrable systems (``scattering diagrams'').
