Construction of an algebra corresponding to a statistical model of the square ladder (square lattice with two lines)
Published in Nuclear Physics B, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define infinite-dimensional algebra and its representation, whose basis is naturally identified with semi-infinite configurations of the square ladder model. We also extrapolate the ideas for the cyclic 3-leg triangular ladder model. All of these propose a way for generalization, which leads to representations of N = 2, ... algebras. Keywords: 2D lattice, square ladder, triangular ladder, conformal algebra, semi-infinite forms, fermions, quadratic algebra, superfrustration, graded Euler characteristic, cohomology, deformation, Jacobi triple product, superalgebras, operator algebras, N = 2, ... algebras.

Direct families of polytopes with nontrivial Massey products
The problem of existence of nontrivial Massey products in cohomology of a space is well-known in algebraic topology and homological algebra. A number of problems in complex geometry, symplectic geometry, and algebraic topology can be stated in terms of Massey products. One of such problems is to establish formality of smooth manifolds in rational homotopy theory. There have already been constructed a few classes of spaces with nontrivial triple Massey products in cohomology. Until now, very few examples of manifolds $M$ with nontrivial higher Massey products in $H^*(M)$ were known. In this work we introduce a sequence of smooth closed manifolds $\{M_{k}\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ such that $M_{k}\hookrightarrow M_{k+1}$ is a submanifold and a retract of $M_{k+1}$ for any $k\geq 1$ and there exists a nontrivial Massey product $\langleα_{1},\ldots,α_{n}\rangle$ in $H^*(M_{k})$ for each $2\leq n\leq k$. The sequence $\{M_k\}^{\infty}_{k=1}$ is determined by a new family of flag nestohedra $\mathcal P_{Mas}$. We give P.D.E. for the two-parametric generating series of $\mathcal P_{Mas}$.
$k$-Schur expansions of Catalan functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We make a broad conjecture about the $k$-Schur positivity of Catalan functions, symmetric functions which generalize the (parabolic) Hall-Littlewood polynomials. We resolve the conjecture with positive combinatorial formulas in cases which address the $k$-Schur expansion of (1) Hall-Littlewood polynomials, proving the $q=0$ case of the strengthened Macdonald positivity conjecture of Lapointe, Lascoux, and Morse; (2) the product of a Schur function and a $k$-Schur function when the indexing partitions concatenate to a partition, describing a class of Gromov-Witten invariants for the quantum cohomology of complete flag varieties; (3) $k$-split polynomials, proving a substantial case of a problem of Broer and Shimozono-Weyman on parabolic Hall-Littlewood polynomials. In addition, we prove the conjecture that $k$-Schur functions defined in terms of $k$-split polynomials agree with strong tableau $k$-Schur functions.

Spectral gap bounds for the simplicial Laplacian and an application to random complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we derive two spectral gap bounds for the reduced Laplacian of a general simplicial complex. Our two bounds are proven by comparing a simplicial complex in two different ways with a larger complex and with the corresponding clique complex respectively. Both of these bounds generalize the result of Aharoni et al. (2005) \cite{ABM} which is valid only for clique complexes. As an application, we investigate the thresholds for vanishing of cohomology of the neighborhood complex of the Erdös-Rényi random graph. We improve the upper bound derived in Kahle (2007) \cite{kahle} by a logarithmic factor using our spectral gap bounds and we also improve the lower bound via finer probabilistic estimates than those in Kahle (2007) \cite{kahle}.

Computational complexity, Newton polytopes, and Schubert polynomials
Published in Proceedings of the 31st Conference on Formal Power Series and Algebraic Combinatorics (Ljubljana), Sem. Lothar. Combin. 82B (2020), Art. 52, 12 pp • Search Publication
The nonvanishing problem asks if a coefficient of a polynomial is nonzero. Many families of polynomials in algebraic combinatorics admit combinatorial counting rules and simultaneously enjoy having saturated Newton polytopes (SNP). Thereby, in amenable cases, nonvanishing is in the complexity class $NP\cap coNP$ of problems with "good characterizations". This suggests a new algebraic combinatorics viewpoint on complexity theory. This report discusses the case of Schubert polynomials. These form a basis of all polynomials and appear in the study of cohomology rings of flag manifolds. We give a tableau criterion for nonvanishing, from which we deduce the first polynomial time algorithm. These results are obtained from new characterizations of the Schubitope, a generalization of the permutahedron defined for any subset of the n x n grid, together with a theorem of A. Fink, K. Mészáros, and A. St. Dizier, which proved a conjecture of C. Monical, N. Tokcan, and the third author.

A Cohomology Theory for Planar Trivalent Graphs with Perfect Matchings
We introduce a new cohomology theory for planar trivalent graphs with perfect matchings. The graded Euler characteristic of the cohomology is a one variable polynomial called the 2-factor polynomial that, if nonzero when evaluated at one, implies that the perfect matching is even and therefore the graph is 4-face colorable. We also define several new polynomials invariants of graphs with and without perfect matchings that are invariants of abstract tensors systems and spin networks defined by Roger Penrose in the 1970s. We show how some of these polynomials can be ``categorified'' into their own homology theories.

Honeycomb Tessellations and Graded Permutohedral Blades
This paper investigates enumerative aspects of permutohedral blades, which provide a generalization of the notion of the tropical hyperplane arrangement. Blade provide the combinatorial underpinning of generalized biadjoint scalar scattering amplitudes in work of Cachazo, Early, Guevara and Mizera (CEGM). We construct a graded basis for a vector space of indicator functions of blades, with the grading determined by the dimension of the support of the function. We prove a Minkowski sum decomposition law into lines and tripods and we explore connections to the cohomology ring of certain moduli spaces and a non-planar analog of the square move for plabic graphs. We give a closed formula for the graded dimension of the basis. It is shown in an Appendix by Donghyun Kim that the coefficients appearing in the numerator of the generating function for the graded dimension are symmetric, and that they sum to $\frac{(2j)!}{j!}$. Unimodality is still open.

Exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the geometry and topology of exotic Springer fibers for orbits corresponding to one-row bipartitions from an explicit, combinatorial point of view. This includes a detailed analysis of the structure of the irreducible components and their intersections as well as the construction of an explicit affine paving. Moreover, we compute the ring structure of cohomology by constructing a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to the exotic Springer fiber. This homotopy equivalent space admits an action of the type C Weyl group inducing Kato's original exotic Springer representation on cohomology. Our results are described in terms of the diagrammatics of the one-boundary Temperley-Lieb algebra (also known as the blob algebra). This provides a first step in generalizing the geometric versions of Khovanov's arc algebra to the exotic setting.
On the Invariants of the Cohomology of Complements of Coxeter Arrangements

We refine Brieskorn's study of the cohomology of the complement of the reflection arrangement of a finite Coxeter group $W$. As a result we complete the verification of a conjecture by Felder and Veselov that gives an explicit basis of the space of $W$-invariants in this cohomology ring.

Property testing and expansion in cubical complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider expansion and property testing in the language of incidence geometry, covering both simplicial and cubical complexes in any dimension. We develop a general method for passing from an explicit description of the cohomology group, which need not be trivial, to a testability proof with linear ratio between errors. The method is demonstrated by testing functions on 2-cells in cubical complexes to be induced from the edges.

Aspects of the topology and combinatorics of Higgs bundle moduli spaces
Published in SIGMA 14 (2018), 129, 18 pages • View PublicationBIB
This survey provides an introduction to basic questions and techniques surrounding the topology of the moduli space of stable Higgs bundles on a Riemann surface. Through examples, we demonstrate how the structure of the cohomology ring of the moduli space leads to interesting questions of a combinatorial nature.
Immaculate line bundles on toric varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We call a sheaf on an algebraic variety immaculate if it lacks any cohomology including the zero-th one, that is, if the derived version of the global section functor vanishes. Such sheaves are the basic tools when building exceptional sequences, investigating the diagonal property, or the toric Frobenius morphism. In the present paper we focus on line bundles on toric varieties. First, we present a possibility of understanding their cohomology in terms of their (generalized) momentum polytopes. Then we present a method to exhibit the entire locus of immaculate divisors within the class group. This will be applied to the cases of smooth toric varieties of Picard rank two and three and to those being given by splitting fans. The locus of immaculate line bundles contains several linear strata of varying dimensions. We introduce a notion of relative immaculacy with respect to certain contraction morphisms. This notion will be stronger than plain immaculacy and provides an explanation of some of these linear strata.

On Bias and Rank
Given a hypersurface $X\subset \mathbb{P}^{N+1}_{\mathbb{C}}$ Dimca gave a proof showing that the cohomologies of X are the same as the projective space in a range determined by the dimension of the singular locus of X. We prove the analog of Dimca's result case when $\mathbb{C}$ is replaced with an algebraically closed field of finite characteristic and singular cohomology is replaced with $\ell$-adic étale cohomology. The Weil conjectures allow relating results about éatle cohomology to counting problems over a finite field. Thus by applying this result, we are able to get a relationship between the algebraic properties of certain polynomials and the size of their zero set.

A formula for the cohomology and $K$-class of a regular Hessenberg variety
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 224 (2020) Article 106230 • View PublicationBIB
Hessenberg varieties are subvarieties of the flag variety parametrized by a linear operator $X$ and a nondecreasing function $h$. The family of Hessenberg varieties for regular $X$ is particularly important: they are used in quantum cohomology, in combinatorial and geometric representation theory, in Schubert calculus and affine Schubert calculus. We show that the classes of a regular Hessenberg variety in the cohomology and $K$-theory of the flag variety are given by making certain substitutions in the Schubert polynomial (respectively Grothendieck polynomial) for a permutation that depends only on $h$. Our formula and our methods are different from a recent result of Abe, Fujita, and Zeng that gives the class of a regular Hessenberg variety with more restrictions on $h$ than here.

Toward a Spectral Theory of Cellular Sheaves
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper outlines a program in what one might call spectral sheaf theory --- an extension of spectral graph theory to cellular sheaves. By lifting the combinatorial graph Laplacian to the Hodge Laplacian on a cellular sheaf of vector spaces over a regular cell complex, one can relate spectral data to the sheaf cohomology and cell structure in a manner reminiscent of spectral graph theory. This work gives an exploratory introduction, and includes results on eigenvalue interlacing, sparsification, effective resistance, and sheaf approximation. These results and subsequent applications are prefaced by an introduction to cellular sheaves and Laplacians.

Representation stability of the cohomology of Springer varieties and some combinatorial consequences
Published in Journal of Algebraic Combinatorics, 53 No.3 (2021), 897--920 • View PublicationBIB
A sequence of $S_n$-representations $\{V_n\}$ is said to be uniformly representation stable if the decomposition of $V_n = \bigoplus_μ c_{μ,n} V(μ)_n$ into irreducible representations is independent of $n$ for each $μ$---that is, the multiplicities $c_{μ,n}$ are eventually independent of $n$ for each $μ$. Church-Ellenberg-Farb proved that the cohomology of flag varieties (the so-called diagonal coinvariant algebra) is uniformly representation stable. We generalize their result from flag varieties to all Springer fibers. More precisely, we show that for any increasing subsequence of Young diagrams, the corresponding sequence of Springer representations form a graded co-FI-module of finite type (in the sense of Church-Ellenberg-Farb). We also explore some combinatorial consequences of this stability.

Theta and eta polynomials in geometry, Lie theory, and combinatorics
Published • View PublicationBIB
The classical Schur polynomials form a natural basis for the ring of symmetric polynomials, and have geometric significance since they represent the Schubert classes in the cohomology ring of Grassmannians. Moreover, these polynomials enjoy rich combinatorial properties. In the last decade, an exact analogue of this picture has emerged in the symplectic and orthogonal Lie types, with the Schur polynomials replaced by the theta and eta polynomials of Buch, Kresch, and the author. This expository paper gives an overview of what is known to date about this correspondence, with examples.

Isomorphism of the cubical and categorical cohomology groups of a higher-rank graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use category-theoretic techniques to provide two proofs showing that for a higher-rank graph $Λ$, its cubical (co-)homology and categorical (co-)homology groups are isomorphic in all degrees, thus answering a question of Kumjian, Pask and Sims in the positive. Our first proof uses the topological realization of a higher-rank graph, which was introduced by Kaliszewski, Kumjian, Quigg, and Sims. In our more combinatorial second proof, we construct, explicitly and in both directions, maps on the level of (co-)chain complexes that implement said isomorphism. Along the way, we extend the definition of cubical (co-)homology to allow arbitrary coefficient modules.

Some combinatorial identities appearing in the calculation of the cohomology of Siegel modular varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the computation of the intersection cohomology of Shimura varieties, or of the $L^2$ cohomology of equal rank locally symmetric spaces, combinatorial identities involving averaged discrete series characters of real reductive groups play a large technical role. These identities can become very complicated and are not always well-understood (see for example the appendix of [8]). We propose a geometric approach to these identities in the case of Siegel modular varieties using the combinatorial properties of the Coxeter complex of the symmetric group. Apart from some introductory remarks about the origin of the identities, our paper is entirely combinatorial and does not require any knowledge of Shimura varieties or of representation theory.
Ansatz for $(-1)^{n-1}\nabla p_n$
We construct a special family of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme on $n$-points in the affine plane. The equivariant Euler characteristic of these sheaves are closely related to the symmetic functions $(-1)^{n-1} \nabla p_n$. We prove a higher cohomology vanishing result of these sheaves. It follows from the Bridgeland-King-Reid correspondence that there is an effective $S_n$ module underlying the aforementioned family of symmetric functions.
