Vanishing of cohomology groups of random simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $k$-dimensional random simplicial complexes that are generated from the binomial random $(k+1)$-uniform hypergraph by taking the downward-closure, where $k\geq 2$. For each $1\leq j \leq k-1$, we determine when all cohomology groups with coefficients in $\mathbb{F}_2$ from dimension one up to $j$ vanish and the zero-th cohomology group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{F}_2$. This property is not deterministically monotone for this model of random complexes, but nevertheless we show that it has a single sharp threshold. Moreover we prove a hitting time result, relating the vanishing of these cohomology groups to the disappearance of the last minimal obstruction. We also study the asymptotic distribution of the dimension of the $j$-th cohomology group inside the critical window. As a corollary, we deduce a hitting time result for a different model of random simplicial complexes introduced in [Linial and Meshulam, Combinatorica, 2006], a result which was previously only known for dimension two [Kahle and Pittel, Random Structures Algorithms, 2016].
Orlik-Solomon-type presentations for the cohomology algebra of toric arrangements
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 373 (2020), no. 3, 1909-1940 • View PublicationBIB
We give an explicit presentation for the integral cohomology ring of the complement of any arrangement of level sets of characters in a complex torus (alias "toric arrangement"). Our description parallels the one given by Orlik and Solomon for arrangements of hyperplanes, and builds on De Concini and Procesi's work on the rational cohomology of unimodular toric arrangements. As a byproduct we extend Dupont's rational formality result to formality over $\mathbb Z$. The data needed in order to state the presentation is fully encoded in the poset of connected components of intersections of the arrangement.

Moment curves and cyclic symmetry for positive Grassmannians
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 51 (2019), no. 5, 900-916 • View PublicationBIB
We show that for each k and n, the cyclic shift map on the complex Grassmannian Gr(k,n) has exactly $\binom{n}{k}$ fixed points. There is a unique totally nonnegative fixed point, given by taking n equally spaced points on the trigonometric moment curve (if k is odd) or the symmetric moment curve (if k is even). We introduce a parameter q, and show that the fixed points of a q-deformation of the cyclic shift map are precisely the critical points of the mirror-symmetric superpotential $\mathcal{F}_q$ on Gr(k,n). This follows from results of Rietsch about the quantum cohomology ring of Gr(k,n). We survey many other diverse contexts which feature moment curves and the cyclic shift map.

Unique rectification in $d$-complete posets: towards the $K$-theory of Kac-Moody flag varieties
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 25(4), 2018, 1-35 • View PublicationBIB
The jeu-de-taquin-based Littlewood-Richardson rule of H. Thomas and A. Yong (2009) for minuscule varieties has been extended in two orthogonal directions, either enriching the cohomology theory or else expanding the family of varieties considered. In one direction, A. Buch and M. Samuel (2016) developed a combinatorial theory of "unique rectification targets" in minuscule posets to extend the Thomas-Yong rule from ordinary cohomology to $K$-theory. Separately, P.-E. Chaput and N. Perrin (2012) used the combinatorics of R. Proctor's "$d$-complete posets" to extend the Thomas-Yong rule from minuscule varieties to a broader class of Kac-Moody structure constants. We begin to address the unification of these theories. Our main result is the existence of unique rectification targets in a large class of $d$-complete posets. From this result, we obtain conjectural positive combinatorial formulas for certain $K$-theoretic Schubert structure constants in the Kac-Moody setting.

Line configurations and r-Stirling partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A set partition of $[n] := \{1, 2, \dots, n \}$ is called {\em $r$-Stirling} if the numbers $1, 2, \dots, r$ belong to distinct blocks. Haglund, Rhoades, and Shimozono constructed graded ring $R_{n,k}$ depending on two positive integers $k \leq n$ whose algebraic properties are governed by the combinatorics of ordered set partitions of $[n]$ with $k$ blocks. We introduce a variant $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$ of this quotient for ordered $r$-Stirling partitions which depends on three integers $r \leq k \leq n$. We describe the standard monomial basis of $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$ and use the combinatorial notion of the {\em coinversion code} of an ordered set partition to reprove and generalize some results of Haglund et.\ al.\ in a more direct way. Furthermore, we introduce a variety $X_{n,k}^{(r)}$ of line arrangements whose cohomology is presented as the integral form of $R_{n,k}^{(r)}$, generalizing results of Pawlowski and Rhoades.

Cylindric symmetric functions and positivity
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce new families of cylindric symmetric functions as subcoalgebras in the ring of symmetric functions $Λ$ (viewed as a Hopf algebra) which have non-negative structure constants. Combinatorially these cylindric symmetric functions are defined as weighted sums over cylindric reverse plane partitions or - alternatively - in terms of sets of affine permutations. We relate their combinatorial definition to an algebraic construction in terms of the principal Heisenberg subalgebra of the affine Lie algebra $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$ and a specialised cyclotomic Hecke algebra. Using Schur-Weyl duality we show that the new cylindric symmetric functions arise as matrix elements of Lie algebra elements in the subspace of symmetric tensors of a particular level-0 module which can be identified with the small quantum cohomology ring of the $k$-fold product of projective space. The analogous construction in the subspace of alternating tensors gives the known set of cylindric Schur functions which are related to the small quantum cohomology ring of Grassmannians. We prove that cylindric Schur functions form a subcoalgebra in $Λ$ whose structure constants are the 3-point genus 0 Gromov-Witten invariants. We show that the new families of cylindric functions obtained from the subspace of symmetric tensors also share the structure constants of a symmetric Frobenius algebra, which we define in terms of tensor multiplicities of the generalised symmetric group $G(n,1,k)$.

Two Examples of Toric Arrangements

We show that the integral cohomology algebra of the complement of a toric arrangement is not determined by the poset of layers. Moreover, the rational cohomology algebra is not determined by the arithmetic matroid (however it is determined by the poset of layers).

Space of isospectral periodic tridiagonal matrices
Published in Algebr. Geom. Topol. 20 (2020) 2957-2994 • View PublicationBIB
A periodic tridiagonal matrix is a tridiagonal matrix with additional two entries at the corners. We study the space $X_{n,λ}$ of Hermitian periodic tridiagonal $n\times n$-matrices with a fixed simple spectrum $λ$. Using the discretized Shrödinger operator we describe all spectra $λ$ for which $X_{n,λ}$ is a topological manifold. The space $X_{n,λ}$ carries a natural effective action of a compact $(n-1)$-torus. We describe the topology of its orbit space and, in particular, show that whenever the isospectral space is a manifold, its orbit space is homeomorphic to $S^4\times T^{n-3}$. There is a classical dynamical system: the flow of the periodic Toda lattice, acting on $X_{n,λ}$. Except for the degenerate locus $X_{n,λ}^0$, the Toda lattice exhibits Liouville--Arnold behavior, so that the space $X_{n,λ}\setminus X_{n,λ}^0$ is fibered into tori. The degenerate locus of the Toda system is described in terms of combinatorial geometry: its structure is encoded in the special cell subdivision of a torus, which is obtained from the regular tiling of the euclidean space by permutohedra. We apply methods of commutative algebra and toric topology to describe the cohomology and equivariant cohomology modules of $X_{n,λ}$.

Manifolds of isospectral arrow matrices
Published in Sbornik: Mathematics 212:5 (2021), 3-36 • Search Publication
An arrow matrix is a matrix with zeroes outside the main diagonal, first row, and first column. We consider the space $M_{St_n,λ}$ of Hermitian arrow $(n+1)\times (n+1)$-matrices with fixed simple spectrum $λ$. We prove that this space is a smooth $2n$-manifold, and its smooth structure is independent on the spectrum. Next, this manifold carries the locally standard torus action: we describe the topology and combinatorics of its orbit space. If $n\geqslant 3$, the orbit space $M_{St_n,λ}/T^n$ is not a polytope, hence this manifold is not quasitoric. However, there is a natural permutation action on $M_{St_n,λ}$ which induces the combined action of a semidirect product $T^n\rtimesΣ_n$. The orbit space of this large action is a simple polytope. The structure of this polytope is described in the paper. In case $n=3$, the space $M_{St_3,λ}/T^3$ is a solid torus with boundary subdivided into hexagons in a regular way. This description allows to compute the cohomology ring and equivariant cohomology ring of the 6-dimensional manifold $M_{St_3,λ}$ using the general theory developed by the first author. This theory is also applied to a certain $6$-dimensional manifold called the twin of $M_{St_3,λ}$. The twin carries a half-dimensional torus action and has nontrivial tangent and normal bundles.

Variations on the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
We define, for each subset $S$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. When $S=\emptyset,$ this is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra. The most intriguing case is $S=\{2\},$ giving a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh. For arbitrary $S,$ the symmetric and exterior powers of the module $Lie_n^S$ allow us to deduce Schur positivity for a new class of multiplicity-free sums of power sums.

The Cohomology for Wu Characteristics
While Euler characteristic X(G)=sum_x w(x) super counts simplices, Wu characteristics w_k(G) = sum_(x_1,x_2,...,x_k) w(x_1)...w(x_k) super counts simultaneously pairwise interacting k-tuples of simplices in a finite abstract simplicial complex G. More general is the k-intersection number w_k(G_1,...G_k), where x_i in G_i. We define interaction cohomology H^p(G_1,...,G_k) compatible with w_k and invariant under Barycentric subdivison. It allows to distinguish spaces which simplicial cohomology can not: it can identify algebraically the Moebius strip and the cylinder for example. The cohomology satisfies the Kuenneth formula: the Poincare polynomials p_k(t) are ring homomorphisms from the strong ring to the ring of polynomials in t. The Dirac operator D=d+d^* defines the block diagonal Hodge Laplacian L=D^2 which leads to the generalized Hodge correspondence b_p(G)=dim(H^p_k(G)) = dim(ker(L_p)) and Euler-Poincare w_k(G)=sum_p (-1)^p dim(H^p_k(G)) for Wu characteristic. Also, like for traditional simplicial cohomology, isospectral Lax deformation D' = [B(D),D], with B(t)=d(t)-d^*(t)-ib(t), D(t)=d(t)+d(t)^* + b(t) can deform the exterior derivative d. The Brouwer-Lefschetz fixed point theorem generalizes to all Wu characteristics: given an endomorphism T of G, the super trace of its induced map on k'th cohomology defines a Lefschetz number L_k(T). The Brouwer index i_T,k(x_1,...,x_k) = product_j=1^k w(x_j) sign(T|x_j) attached to simplex tuple which is invariant under T leads to the formula L_k(T) = sum_T(x)=x i_T,k(x). For T=Id, the Lefschetz number L_k(Id) is equal to the k'th Wu characteristic w_k(G) of the graph G and the Lefschetz formula reduces to the Euler-Poincare formula for Wu characteristic.

Manifolds of isospectral matrices and Hessenberg varieties
Published in Int. Math. Research Notices 2021:21 (2021), 16671-16692 • View PublicationBIB
We study the space $X_h$ of Hermitian matrices having staircase form and the given simple spectrum. There is a natural action of a compact torus on this space. Using generalized Toda flow, we show that $X_h$ is a smooth manifold and its smooth type is independent of the spectrum. Morse theory is then used to show the vanishing of odd degree cohomology, so that $X_h$ is an equivariantly formal manifold. The equivariant and ordinary cohomology of $X_h$ are described using GKM-theory. The main goal of this paper is to show the connection between the manifolds $X_h$ and the semisimple Hessenberg varieties well-known in algebraic geometry. Both the spaces $X_h$ and Hessenberg varieties form wonderful families of submanifolds in the complete flag variety. There is a certain symmetry between these families which can be generalized to other submanifolds of the flag variety.

Atoms for signed permutations
Published in European J. Combin. 94 (2021), 103288 • View PublicationBIB
There is a natural analogue of weak Bruhat order on the involutions in any Coxeter group. The saturated chains of intervals in this order correspond to reduced words for a certain set of group elements called atoms. Brion gives a general formula for the cohomology class of a $K$-orbit closure in an arbitrary flag variety, where $K$ is a symmetric subgroup of a complex algebraic group. In type A, the terms in this formula are indexed by atoms for permutations. We study the combinatorics of atoms for involutions in the group of signed permutations. In particular, we give a compact description of the atom set for any signed involution and endow it with the structure of a graded poset. Our main result, as an application, is to identify explicitly the terms in Brion's cohomology formula in types B and C. These descriptions apply to all $K$-orbits in these types and are the first of their kind outside of type A.

Quantitative aspects of acyclicity

We study several aspects of the $k$-th Cheeger constant of a complex X, a parameter that quantifies the distance of $X$ from a complex $Y$ with nontrivial $k$-th cohomology over $\mathbb{Z}_2$. Our results include general methods for bounding the cosystolic norm of a cochain and for bounding the Cheeger constant of a complex, a discussion of expansion of pseudomanifolds and geometric lattices, probabilistic upper bounds on Cheeger constants, and application of non-Abelian expansion to random complexes.

Listening to the cohomology of graphs
We prove that the spectrum of the Kirchhoff Laplacian H0 of a finite simple Barycentric refined graph and the spectrum of the connection Laplacian L of G determine each other: we prove that L-L^(-1) is similar to the Hodge Laplacian H of G which is in one dimensions the direct sum of the Kirchhoff Laplacian H0 and its 1-form analog H1. The spectrum of a single choice of H0,H1 or H alone determines the Betti numbers b0,b1 of G as well as the spectrum of the other matrices. It follows that b0 is the number of eigenvalues 1 of L and that b1 is the number of eigenvalues -1 of L. For a general abstract finite simplicial complex G, we express the matrix entries g(x,y) = w(x) w(y) X( St(x) cap St(y) ) of the inverse of L using stars St(x)= { z in G | x subset of z } of x and w(x)=(-1)^dim(x) and Euler characteristic X. One can see W+(x)=St(x) and W-(x)={ z in G | z subset x } as stable and unstable manifolds of a simplex x in G and g(x,y) =w(x) w(y) X(W+(x) cap W+(y)) as heteroclinic intersection numbers or curvatures and the identity L g=1 as a collection of Gauss-Bonnet formulas. The homoclinic energy w(x)=X(W+(x) cap W-(x)) by definition adds up to X(G). The matrix M(x,y)=w(x) w(y) X(W-(x) cap W-(y)) is similar to L(x,y)=X(W-(x) cap W-(y)). The sum of the matrix entries of M is the definition of Wu characteristic. For dimension 2 and higher we don't know yet how to recover the Betti numbers from the eigenvalues of the matrix H or from L. So far, it can only be obtained from a collection of block matrices, via the Hodge relations b_k = dim(H_k). A natural conjecture is that for a Barycentric refinement of a complex G, the spectrum of L determines the Betti vector. We know this now in one dimensions.

Asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for random simplicial complex processes
Published in J. Math. Soc. Japan, Vol. 71, No.3 (2019), 765-804 • View PublicationBIB
We study the homological properties of random simplicial complexes. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic behavior of lifetime sums for a class of increasing random simplicial complexes; this result is a higher-dimensional counterpart of Frieze's $ζ(3)$-limit theorem for the Erdős-Rényi graph process. The main results include solutions to questions posed in an earlier study by Hiraoka and Shirai about the Linial-Meshulam complex process and the random clique complex process. One of the key elements of the arguments is a new upper bound on the Betti numbers of general simplicial complexes in terms of the number of small eigenvalues of Laplacians on links. This bound can be regarded as a quantitative version of the cohomology vanishing theorem.

Alcove random walks, k-Schur functions and the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset

We use k-Schur functions to get the minimal boundary of the k-bounded partition poset. This permits to describe the central random walks on affine Grassmannian elements of type A and yields a polynomial expression for their drift. We also recover Rietsch's parametriza-tion of totally nonnegative unitriangular Toeplitz matrices without using quantum cohomology of flag varieties. All the homeomorphisms we define can moreover be made explicit by using the combinatorics of k-Schur functions and elementary computations based on Perron-Frobenius theorem.

The cohomology rings of regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties and Schubert polynomials

In this paper we study a relation between the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety and Schubert polynomials. To describe an explicit presentation of the cohomology ring of a regular nilpotent Hessenberg variety, polynomials $f_{i,j}$ were introduced by Abe-Harada-Horiguchi-Masuda. We show that every polynomial $f_{i,j}$ is an alternating sum of certain Schubert polynomials.

Puzzles in $K$-homology of Grassmannians
Published in Pacific J. Math. 303 (2019) 703-727 • View PublicationBIB
Knutson, Tao, and Woodward formulated a Littlewood-Richardson rule for the cohomology ring of Grassmannians in terms of puzzles. Vakil and Wheeler-Zinn-Justin have found additional triangular puzzle pieces that allow one to express structure constants for $K$-theory of Grassmannians. Here we introduce two other puzzle pieces of hexagonal shape, each of which gives a Littlewood-Richardson rule for $K$-homology of Grassmannians. We also explore the corresponding eight versions of $K$-theoretic Littlewood-Richardson tableaux.
