We discuss three distinct topics of independent interest; one in enumerative combinatorics, one in symmetric function theory, and one in algebraic geometry. The topic in enumerative combinatorics concerns a q-analog of a generalization of the Eulerian polynomials, the one in symmetric function theory deals with a refinement of the chromatic symmetric functions of Stanley, and the one in algebraic geometry deals with Tymoczko's representation of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the regular semisimple Hessenberg variety of type A. Our purpose is to explore some remarkable connections between these topics.
Quantum cohomology and the Satake isomorphism
We prove that the geometric Satake correspondence admits quantum corrections for minuscule Grassmannians of Dynkin types $A$ and $D$. We find, as a corollary, that the quantum connection of a spinor variety $OG(n,2n)$ can be obtained as the half-spinorial representation of that of the quadric $Q_{2n-2}$. We view the (quantum) cohomology of these Grassmannians as endowed simultaneously with two structures, one of a module over the algebra of symmetric functions, and the other, of a module over the Langlands dual Lie algebra, and investigate the interaction between the two. In particular, we study primitive classes $y$ in the cohomology of a minuscule Grassmannian $G/P$ that are characterized by the condition that the operator of cup product by $y$ is in the image of the Lie algebra action. Our main result states that quantum correction preserves primitivity. We provide a quantum counterpart to a result obtained by V. Ginzburg in the classical setting by giving explicit formulas for the quantum corrections to homogeneous primitive elements.

Let $G$ be a complex quasi-simple algebraic group and $G/P$ be a partial flag variety. The projections of Richardson varieties from the full flag variety form a stratification of $G/P$. We show that the closure partial order of projected Richardson varieties agrees with that of a subset of Schubert varieties in the affine flag variety of $G$. Furthermore, we compare the torus-equivariant cohomology and $K$-theory classes of these two stratifications by pushing or pulling these classes to the affine Grassmannian. Our work generalizes results of Knutson, Lam, and Speyer for the Grassmannian of type $A$.

We study the class $\mathcal C$ of symmetric functions whose coefficients in the Schur basis can be described by generating functions for sets of tableaux with fixed shape. Included in this class are the Hall-Littlewood polynomials, $k$-atoms, and Stanley symmetric functions; functions whose Schur coefficients encode combinatorial, representation theoretic and geometric information. While Schur functions represent the cohomology of the Grassmannian variety of $GL_n$, Grothendieck functions $\{G_λ\}$ represent the $K$-theory of the same space. In this paper, we give a combinatorial description of the coefficients when any element of $\mathcal C$ is expanded in the $G$-basis or the basis dual to $\{G_λ\}$.
Cohomological and Combinatorial Methods in the Study of Symbolic Powers and Equations defining Varieties
In this PhD thesis we will discuss some aspects in Commutative Algebra which have interactions with Algebraic Geometry, Representation Theory and Combinatorics. In particular, in the first chapter we will focus on understanding when certain cohomology modules vanish, a classical problem raised by Grothendieck. In the second chapter we will use local cohomology to study the connectedness behavior during a Groebner deformation and the arithmetical rank of certain varieties. In the third chapter, we will investigate the relations between the minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix by using tools from the representation theory of the general linear group (the results of this chapter will appear in a joint paper with Bruns and Conca). In the last chapter we will use combinatorial methods to study the Cohen-Macaulay property of the symbolic powers of Stanley-Reisner ideals. In the thesis are included five appendixes with some basic needed facts and a preliminary chapter introducing to local cohomology.
Equivariant Pieri Rule for the homology of the affine Grassmannian

An explicit rule is given for the product of the degree two class with an arbitrary Schubert class in the torus-equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannian. In addition a Pieri rule (the Schubert expansion of the product of a special Schubert class with an arbitrary one) is established for the equivariant homology of the affine Grassmannians of SL_n and a similar formula is conjectured for Sp_{2n} and SO_{2n+1}. For SL_n the formula is explicit and positive. By a theorem of Peterson these compute certain products of Schubert classes in the torus-equivariant quantum cohomology of flag varieties. The SL_n Pieri rule is used in our recent definition of k-double Schur functions and affine double Schur functions.
Affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras: The center

The degenerate affine and affine BMW algebras arise naturally in the context of Schur-Weyl duality for orthogonal and symplectic Lie algebras and quantum groups, respectively. Cyclotomic BMW algebras, affine Hecke algebras, cyclotomic Hecke algebras, and their degenerate versions are quotients. In this paper the theory is unified by treating the orthogonal and symplectic cases simultaneously; we make an exact parallel between the degenerate affine and affine cases via a new algebra which takes the role of the affine braid group for the degenerate setting. A main result of this paper is an identification of the centers of the affine and degenerate affine BMW algebras in terms of rings of symmetric functions which satisfy a "cancellation property" or "wheel condition" (in the degenerate case, a reformulation of a result of Nazarov). Miraculously, these same rings also arise in Schubert calculus, as the cohomology and K-theory of isotropic Grassmanians and symplectic loop Grassmanians. We also establish new intertwiner-like identities which, when projected to the center, produce the recursions for central elements given previously by Nazarov for degenerate affine BMW algebras, and by Beliakova-Blanchet for affine BMW algebras.
Twisted strong Macdonald theorems and adjoint orbits

The strong Macdonald theorems state that, for $L$ reductive and $s$ an odd variable, the cohomology algebras $H^*(L[z]/z^N)$ and $H^*(L[z,s])$ are freely generated, and describe the cohomological, $s$-, and $z$-degrees of the generators. The resulting identity for the $z$-weighted Euler characteristic is equivalent to Macdonald's constant term identity for a finite root system. We calculate $H^*(\mathfrak{p} / z^N \mathfrak{p})$ and $H^*(\mathfrak{p}[s])$ for $\mathfrak{p}$ a standard parahoric in a twisted loop algebra, giving strong Macdonald theorems that take into account both a parabolic component and a possible diagram automorphism twist. In particular we show that $H^*(\mathfrak{p} / z^N \mathfrak{p})$ contains a parabolic subalgebra of the coinvariant algebra of the fixed-point subgroup of the Weyl group of $L$, and thus is no longer free. We also prove a strong Macdonald theorem for $H^*(\mathfrak{b}; S^* \mathfrak{n}^*)$ and $H^*(\mathfrak{b} / z^N \mathfrak{n})$ when $\mathfrak{b}$ and $\mathfrak{n}$ are Iwahori and nilpotent subalgebras respectively of a twisted loop algebra. For each strong Macdonald theorem proved, taking $z$-weighted Euler characteristics gives an identity equivalent to Macdonald's constant term identity for the corresponding affine root system. As part of the proof, we study the regular adjoint orbits for the adjoint action of the twisted arc group associated to $L$, proving an analogue of the Kostant slice theorem.

Let Y be a divisor on a smooth algebraic variety X. We investigate the geometry of the Jacobian scheme of Y, homological invariants derived from logarithmic differential forms along Y, and their relationship with the property that Y is a free divisor.
We consider arrangements of hyperplanes as a source of examples and counterexamples. In particular, we make a complete calculation of the local cohomology of logarithmic forms of generic hyperplane arrangements.

We describe an explicit semi-algebraic partition for the complement of a real hyperplane arrangement such that each piece is contractible and so that the pieces form a basis of Borel-Moore homology. We also give an explicit correspondence between the de Rham cohomology and the Borel-Moore homology.

We refine a conjecture by Lehrer and Solomon on the structure of the Orlik-Solomon algebra of a finite Coxeter group $W$ and relate it to the descent algebra of $W$. As a result, we claim that both the group algebra of $W$, as well as the Orlik-Solomon algebra of $W$ can be decomposed into a sum of induced one-dimensional representations of element centralizers, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. We give a uniform proof of the claim for symmetric groups. In addition, we prove that a relative version of the conjecture holds for every pair $(W, W_L)$, where $W$ is arbitrary and $W_L$ is a parabolic subgroup of $W$ all of whose irreducible factors are of type $A$.

We find a relation between mixed volumes of several polytopes and the convex hull of their union, deducing it from the following fact: the mixed volume of a collection of polytopes only depends on the product of their support functions (rather than on the individual support functions). For integer polytopes, this dependence is essentially a certain specialization of the isomorphism between two well-known combinatorial models for the cohomology of toric varieties, however, this construction has not been extended to arbitrary polytopes so far (partially due to the lack of combinatorial tools capable of substituting for toric geometry, when vertices are not rational). We provide such an extension, which leads to an explicit formula for the mixed volume in terms of the product of support functions, and may also be interesting because of the combinatorial tools (tropical varieties with polynomial weights and their corner loci) that appear in our construction. As an example of another possible application of these new objects, we notice that every tropical subvariety in a tropical manifold M can be locally represented as the intersection of M with another tropical variety (possibly with negative weights), and conjecture certain generalizations of this fact to singular M. The above fact about subvarieties of a tropical manifold may be of independent interest, because it implies that the intersection theory on a tropical manifold, which was recently constructed by Allerman, Francois, Rau and Shaw, is locally induced from the ambient vector space.

We study type $A$ nilpotent Hessenberg varieties equipped with a natural $S^1$-action using techniques introduced by Tymoczko, Harada-Tymoczko, and Bayegan-Harada, with a particular emphasis on a special class of nilpotent Springer varieties corresponding to the partition $λ= (n-2,2)$ for $n \geq 4$. First we define the adjacent-pair matrix corresponding to any filling of a Young diagram with $n$ boxes with the alphabet $\{1,2,\ldots,n\}$. Using the adjacent-pair matrix we make more explicit and also extend some statements concerning highest forms of linear operators in previous work of Tymoczko. Second, for a nilpotent operator $N$ and Hessenberg function $h$, we construct an explicit bijection between the $S^1$-fixed points of the nilpotent Hessenberg variety $\Hess(N,h)$ and the set of $(h,λ_N)$-permissible fillings of the Young diagram $λ_N$. Third, we use poset pinball, the combinatorial game introduced by Harada and Tymoczko, to study the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type $A$ Springer varieties $\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)}$ associated to Young diagrams of shape $(n-2,2)$ for $n\geq 4$. Specifically, we use the dimension pair algorithm for Betti-acceptable pinball described by Bayegan and Harada to specify a subset of the equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety $\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)$ which maps to a module basis of $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$ under the projection $H^*_T(\mathcal{F}\ell ags(\C^n)) \to H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. Our pinball module basis is not poset-upper-triangular; this is the first concrete such example in the literature. A consequence of our proof is that there exists a simple and explicit change of basis which transforms our basis to a poset-upper-triangular module basis for $H^*_{S^1}(\mathcal{S}_{(n-2,2)})$. We close with open questions for future work.
A Giambelli formula for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties

The main result of this note is a Giambelli formula for the Peterson Schubert classes in the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of a type $A$ Peterson variety. Our results depend on the Monk formula for the equivariant structure constants for the Peterson Schubert classes derived by Harada and Tymoczko. In addition, we give proofs of two facts observed by H. Naruse: firstly, that some constants which appear in the multiplicative structure of the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology of Peterson varieties are Stirling numbers of the second kind, and secondly, that the Peterson Schubert classes satisfy a stability property in a sense analogous to the stability of the classical equivariant Schubert classes in the $T$-equivariant cohomology of the flag variety.
Poset pinball, the dimension pair algorithm, and type A regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties

In this manuscript we develop the theory of poset pinball, a combinatorial game recently introduced by Harada and Tymoczko for the study of the equivariant cohomology rings of GKM-compatible subspaces of GKM spaces. Harada and Tymoczko also prove that in certain circumstances, a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball yields a module basis for the equivariant cohomology ring of the GKM-compatible subspace. Our main contributions are twofold. First we construct an algorithm (which we call the dimension pair algorithm) which yields the result of a successful outcome of Betti poset pinball for any type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg and any type $A$ nilpotent Springer variety, considered as GKM-compatible subspaces of the flag variety $\Flags(\C^n)$. The definition of the algorithm is motivated by a correspondence between Hessenberg affine cells and certain Schubert polynomials which we learned from Erik Insko. Second, in the special case of the type $A$ regular nilpotent Hessenberg varieties specified by the Hessenberg function $h(1)=h(2)=3$ and $h(i) = i+1$ for $3 \leq i \leq n-1$ and $h(n)=n$, we prove that the pinball result coming from the dimension pair algorithm is poset-upper-triangular; by results of Harada and Tymoczko this implies the corresponding equivariant cohomology classes form a $H^*_{S^1}(\pt)$-module basis for the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring of the Hessenberg variety.
Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for reflection groups

In this paper we explicitly compute all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for semisimple or Kac-Moody groups G, that is, the structure coefficients of the cohomology algebra H^*(G/P), where P is a parabolic subgroup of G. These coefficients are of importance in enumerative geometry, algebraic combinatorics and representation theory. Our formula for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is given in terms of the Cartan matrix and the Weyl group of G. However, if some off-diagonal entries of the Cartan matrix are 0 or -1, the formula may contain negative summands. On the other hand, if the Cartan matrix satisfies $a_{ij}a_{ji}\ge 4$ for all $i,j$, then each summand in our formula is nonnegative that implies nonnegativity of all Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. We extend this and other results to the structure coefficients of the T-equivariant cohomology of flag varieties G/P and Bott-Samelson varieties Gamma_\ii(G).
Equipartition of several measures
We prove several results of the following type: any $d$ measures in $\mathbb R^d$ can be partitioned simultaneously into $k$ equal parts by a convex partition (this particular result is proved independently by Pablo Soberón). Another example is: Any convex body in the plane can be partitioned into $q$ parts of equal areas and perimeters provided $q$ is a prime power.
The above results give a partial answer to several questions posed by A. Kaneko, M. Kano, R. Nandakumar, N. Ramana Rao, and I. Bárány. The proofs in this paper are inspired by the generalization of the Borsuk--Ulam theorem by M. Gromov and Y. Memarian.
The main tolopogical tool in proving these facts is the lemma about the cohomology of configuration spaces originated in the work of V.A. Vasil'ev.
A newer version of this paper, merged with the similar paper of A. Hubard and B. Aronov is {arXiv:1306.2741}.
Cohomology of real Grassmann manifold and KP flow
We consider a realization of the real Grassmann manifold Gr(k,n) based on a particular flow defined by the corresponding (singular) solution of the KP equation. Then we show that the KP flow can provide an explicit and simple construction of the incidence graph for the integral cohomology of Gr(k,n). It turns out that there are two types of graphs, one for the trivial coefficients and other for the twisted coefficients, and they correspond to the homology groups of the orientable and non-orientable cases of Gr(k,n) via the Poincare-Lefschetz duality. We also derive an explicit formula of the Poincare polynomial for Gr(k,n) and show that the Poincare polynomial is also related to the number of points on a suitable version of Gr(k,n) over a finite field $\F_q$ with q being a power of a prime. In particular, we find that the number of $\F_q$ points on Gr(k,n) can be computed by counting the number of singularities along the KP flow.
