Finite groups acting linearly: Hochschild cohomology and the cup product
Published • View PublicationBIB
When a finite group acts linearly on a complex vector space, the natural semi-direct product of the group and the polynomial ring over the space forms a skew group algebra. This algebra plays the role of the coordinate ring of the resulting orbifold and serves as a substitute for the ring of invariant polynomials from the viewpoint of geometry and physics. Its Hochschild cohomology predicts various Hecke algebras and deformations of the orbifold. In this article, we investigate the ring structure of the Hochschild cohomology of the skew group algebra. We show that the cup product coincides with a natural smash product, transferring the cohomology of a group action into a group action on cohomology. We express the algebraic structure of Hochschild cohomology in terms of a partial order on the group (modulo the kernel of the action). This partial order arises after assigning to each group element the codimension of its fixed point space. We describe the algebraic structure for Coxeter groups, where this partial order is given by the reflection length function; a similar combinatorial description holds for an infinite family of complex reflection groups.

A combinatorial approach to Specht module cohomology
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a Specht module S^λfor the symmetric group Σ_d, the cohomology H^i(Σ_d, S^λ) is known only in degree i=0. We give a combinatorial criterion equivalent to the nonvanishing of the degree i=1 cohomology, valid in odd characteristic. Our condition generalizes James' solution in degree zero. We apply this combinatorial description to give some computations of Specht module cohomology, together with an explicit description of the corresponding modules. Finally we suggest some general conjectures that might be particularly amenable to proof using this description.

An alternative ending to "Pleasant extensions retaining algebraic structure''
The culmination of the papers (arXiv:0905.0518, arXiv:0910.0909) was a proof of the norm convergence in $L^2(μ)$ of the quadratic nonconventional ergodic averages \frac{1}{N}\sum_{n=1}^N(f_1\circ T_1^{n^2})(f_2\circ T_1^{n^2}T_2^n)\quad\quad f_1,f_2\in L^\infty(μ) associated to an arbitrary probability-preserving \bbZ^2-system (X,μ,T_1,T_2). This is a special case of the Bergelson-Leibman conjecture on the norm convergence of polynomial nonconventional ergodic averages. That proof relied on some new machinery for extending probability-preserving $\bbZ^d$-systems to obtain simplified asymptotic behaviour for various nonconventional averages such as the above. The engine of this machinery is formed by some detailed structure theorems for the `characteristic factors' that are available for some such averages after ascending to a suitably-extended system. However, these new structure theorems underwent two distinct phases of development, separated by the discovery of some new technical results in Moore's cohomology theory for locally compact groups (arXiv:1004.4937). That discovery enabled a significant improvement to the main structure theorem (Theorem 1.1 in (arXiv:0905.0518)), which in turn afforded a much shortened proof of convergence. However, since the proof of convergence using the original structure theorem required some quite different ideas that are now absent from these other papers, I have recorded it here in case it has some independent interest.

Symmetric group actions on the cohomology of configurations in $R^d$
In this paper we deal with the action of the symmetric group on the cohomology of the configuration space $C_n(d)$ of $n$ points in $\mathbb{R}^d$. This topic has been studied by several authors (see the introduction). On the cohomology algebra $H^*(C_n(d); \mathbb{C})$ there is, in addition to the natural $S_n$-action, an extended action of $S_{n+1}$; this was first shown for the case when $d$ is even by Mathieu, Robinson and Whitehouse and the second author. For the case when $d$ is odd it was shown by Mathieu (anyway we will give an elementary algebraic construction of the extended action for this case). The purpose of this article is to present some results that can be obtained, in an elementary way, exploiting the interplay between the extended action and the standard action.

Branched polymers and hyperplane arrangements
We generalize the construction of connected branched polymers and the notion of the volume of the space of connected branched polymers studied by Brydges and Imbrie, and Kenyon and Winkler to any hyperplane arrangement A. The volume of the resulting configuration space of connected branched polymers associated to the hyperplane arrangement A is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at 0. We give a more general definition of the space of branched polymers, where we do not require connectivity, and introduce the notion of q-volume for it, which is expressed through the value of the characteristic polynomial of A at -q. Finally, we relate the volume of the space of branched polymers to broken circuits and show that the cohomology ring of the space of branched polymers is isomorphic to the Orlik-Solomon algebra.

Buchsbaum* complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A class of simplicial complexes, which we call Buchsbaum* over a field, is introduced. Buchsbaum* complexes generalize triangulations of orientable homology manifolds as well as doubly Cohen-Macaulay complexes. By definition, the Buchsbaum* property depends only on the geometric realization and the field. Characterizations in terms of simplicial and local cohomology are given. It is proved that Buchsbaum* complexes are doubly Buchsbaum. Enumerative and graph theoretic properties of Buchsbaum* complexes are investigated. It is shown that various constructions, among them one which generalizes convex ear decompositions, yield Buchsbaum* simplicial complexes.

A positive Monk formula in the S^1-equivariant cohomology of type A Peterson varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
Peterson varieties are a special class of Hessenberg varieties that have been extensively studied e.g. by Peterson, Kostant, and Rietsch, in connection with the quantum cohomology of the flag variety. In this manuscript, we develop a generalized Schubert calculus, and in particular a positive Chevalley-Monk formula, for the ordinary and Borel-equivariant cohomology of the Peterson variety $Y$ in type $A_{n-1}$, with respect to a natural $S^1$-action arising from the standard action of the maximal torus on flag varieties. As far as we know, this is the first example of positive Schubert calculus beyond the realm of Kac-Moody flag varieties $G/P$. Our main results are as follows. First, we identify a computationally convenient basis of $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$, which we call the basis of Peterson Schubert classes. Second, we derive a manifestly positive, integral Chevalley-Monk formula for the product of a cohomology-degree-2 Peterson Schubert class with an arbitrary Peterson Schubert class. Both $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and $H^*(Y)$ are generated in degree 2. Finally, by using our Chevalley-Monk formula we give explicit descriptions (via generators and relations) of both the $S^1$-equivariant cohomology ring $H^*_{S^1}(Y)$ and the ordinary cohomology ring $H^*(Y)$ of the type $A_{n-1}$ Peterson variety. Our methods are both directly from and inspired by those of GKM (Goresky-Kottwitz-MacPherson) theory and classical Schubert calculus. We discuss several open questions and directions for future work.

A Giambelli formula for classical $G/P$ spaces
Published in J. Algebraic Geometry 23 (2014), 245-278 • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a classical complex Lie group, $P$ any parabolic subgroup of $G$, and $G/P$ the corresponding partial flag variety. We prove an explicit combinatorial Giambelli formula which expresses an arbitrary Schubert class in the cohomology ring of $G/P$ as a polynomial in certain special Schubert class generators. Our formula extends to one that applies to the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of $G/P$ and to the setting of symplectic and orthogonal degeneracy loci.

Macdonald polynomials and symmetric functions
The ring of symmetric functions $Λ$, with natural basis given by the Schur functions, arise in many different areas of mathematics. For example, as the cohomology ring of the grassmanian, and as the representation ring of the symmetric group. One may define a coproduct on $Λ$ by the plethystic addition on alphabets. In this way the ring of symmetric functions becomes a Hopf algebra. The Littlewood--Richardson numbers may be viewed as the structure constants for the co-product in the Schur basis. In the first part of this thesis we show that by using a generalization of the classical umbral calculus of Gian-Carlo Rota, one may deform the basis of Schur functions to find many other bases for which the Littlewood--Richardson numbers as coproduct structure constants. The Macdonald polynomials are a somewhat mysterious qt-deformation of the Schur functions. The second part of this thesis contains a proof a generating function identity for the Macdonald polynomials which was originally conjectured by Kawanaka.

Schubert polynomials and Arakelov theory of orthogonal flag varieties
Published in Math. Zeitschrift 268 (2011), 355-370 • View PublicationBIB
We propose a theory of combinatorially explicit Schubert polynomials which represent the Schubert classes in the Borel presentation of the cohomology ring of orthogonal flag varieties. We use these polynomials to describe the arithmetic Schubert calculus on these spaces. We also give a method to compute the natural arithmetic intersection numbers which arise, and prove that they are all rational numbers.

Sperner's Lemma, Brouwer's fixed-point theorem, and cohomology
The proof of Brouwer's fixed-point theorem based on Sperner's lemma is often presented as an elementary combinatorial alternative to advanced proofs based on algebraic topology. The goal of this note is to show that: (i) the combinatorial proof of Sperner's Lemma can be considered as a cochain-level version, written in the combinatorial language, of a standard cohomological argument; (ii) the standard deduction of Brouwer's theorem from Sperner's lemma is similar to the usual deduction of Brouwer's theorem from the no-retraction theorem and is closely related to the notion of a simplicial approximation. In order to make these connections transparent, we included the above mentioned standard arguments, so the note is self-contained modulo some basic ideas of combinatorial topology.

A Proof of the Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture
We prove the Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture. We give a more direct cohomological interpretation of the conjecture in terms of "typical" covering maps, and use graph Galois theory to "symmetrize" the conjecture. The conjecture is then related to certain kernel of a morphism of sheaves, and is implied provided these kernels are co-acyclic in the covering cohomology theory. This allows us to prove a slightly generalized Strengthened Hanna Neumann Conjecture; this conjecture is false if generalized to all sheaves. The kernels we use do not exist in the theory of graphs, so our use of sheaf theory seems essential to this approach.

Positivity of Equivariant Schubert Classes Through Moment Map Degeneration
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a flag manifold $M=G/B$ with the canonical torus action, the $T-$equivariant cohomology is generated by equivariant Schubert classes, with one class $τ_u$ for every element $u$ of the Weyl group $W$. These classes are determined by their restrictions to the fixed point set $M^T \simeq W$, and the restrictions are polynomials with nonnegative integer coefficients in the simple roots. The main result of this article is a positive formula for computing $τ_u(v)$ in types A, B, and C. To obtain this formula we identify $G/B$ with a generic co-adjoint orbit and use a result of Goldin and Tolman to compute $τ_u(v)$ in terms of the induced moment map. Our formula, given as a sum of contributions of certain maximal ascending chains from $u$ to $v$, follows from a systematic degeneration of the moment map, corresponding to degenerating the co-adjoint orbit. In type A we prove that our formula is manifestly equivalent to the formula announced by Billey in \cite{Bi}, but in type C, the two formulas are not equivalent.

Cohomological rigidity and the number of homeomorphism types for small covers over prisms
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, based upon the basic theory for glued manifolds in M.W. Hirsch (1976) \cite[Chapter 8, §2 Gluing Manifolds Together]{h}, we give a method of constructing homeomorphisms between two small covers over simple convex polytopes. As a result we classify, up to homeomorphism, all small covers over a 3-dimensional prism $P^3(m)$ with $m\geq 3$. We introduce two invariants from colored prisms and other two invariants from ordinary cohomology rings with ${\Bbb Z}_2$-coefficients of small covers. These invariants can form a complete invariant system of homeomorphism types of all small covers over a prism in most cases. Then we show that the cohomological rigidity holds for all small covers over a prism $P^3(m)$ (i.e., cohomology rings with ${\Bbb Z}_2$-coefficients of all small covers over a $P^3(m)$ determine their homeomorphism types). In addition, we also calculate the number of homeomorphism types of all small covers over $P^3(m)$.

Positroid varieties I: juggling and geometry
While the intersection of the Grassmannian Bruhat decompositions for all coordinate flags is an intractable mess, the intersection of only the {\em cyclic shifts} of one Bruhat decomposition turns out to have many of the good properties of the Bruhat and Richardson decompositions. This decomposition coincides with the projection of the Richardson stratification of the flag manifold, studied by Lusztig, Rietsch, and Brown-Goodearl-Yakimov. However, its cyclic-invariance is hidden in this description. Postnikov gave many cyclic-invariant ways to index the strata, and we give a new one, by a subset of the affine Weyl group we call {\em bounded juggling patterns}. We adopt his terminology and call the strata {\em positroid varieties.} We show that positroid varieties are normal and Cohen-Macaulay, and are defined as schemes by the vanishing of Plucker coordinates. We compute their T-equivariant Hilbert series, and show that their associated cohomology classes are represented by affine Stanley functions. This latter fact lets us connect Postnikov's and Buch-Kresch-Tamvakis' approaches to quantum Schubert calculus. Our principal tools are the Frobenius splitting results for Richardson varieties as developed by Brion, Lakshmibai, and Littelmann, and the Hodge-Grobner degeneration of the Grassmannian. We show that each positroid variety degenerates to the projective Stanley-Reisner scheme of a shellable ball.

In this paper we study the homology and cohomology of confguration spaces of two distinct particles on a graph. Our main tool is intersection theory for cycles in graphs. We obtain an explicit description of the cohomology algebra of the configuration space in the case of planar graphs.

Supersymmetry, lattice fermions, independence complexes and cohomology theory
Published in Adv. Theor. Math. Phys., 14.2 (2010), 643-694 • View PublicationBIB
We analyze the quantum ground state structure of a specific model of itinerant, strongly interacting lattice fermions. The interactions are tuned to make the model supersymmetric. Due to this, quantum ground states are in one-to-one correspondence with cohomology classes of the so-called independence complex of the lattice. Our main result is a complete description of the cohomology, and thereby of the quantum ground states, for a two-dimensional square lattice with periodic boundary conditions. Our work builds on results by J. Jonsson, who determined the Euler characteristic (Witten index) via a correspondence with rhombus tilings of the plane. We prove a theorem, first conjectured by P. Fendley, which relates dimensions of the cohomology at grade n to the number of rhombus tilings with n rhombi.

Seifert cohomology of trees
To every tree we associate a filtered cochain complex. Its cohomology and the corresponding spectral sequence have clear combinatorial description. If a tree is the Dynkin diagram of a simple plane curve singularity, the graded Euler characteristic of this complex coincides with the Alexander polynomial of the link. In this case we also point the relation to the Heegard-Floer homology theory, constructed by P. Ozsvath and Z. Szabo.

The Orlik-Terao algebra and 2-formality
Published in Mathematical Research Letters, 16 (2009), 171-182 • View PublicationBIB
The Orlik-Solomon algebra is the cohomology ring of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement A in C^n; it is the quotient of an exterior algebra E(V) on |A| generators. Orlik and Terao introduced a commutative analog S(V)/I of the Orlik-Solomon algebra to answer a question of Aomoto and showed the Hilbert series depends only on the intersection lattice L(A). Motivated by topological considerations, Falk and Randell introduced the property of 2-formality; we study the relation between 2-formality and the Orlik-Terao algebra. Our main result is a necessary and sufficient condition for 2-formality in terms of the quadratic component I_2 of the Orlik-Terao ideal I: 2-formality is determined by the tangent space T_p(V(I_2)) at a generic point p.

Holonomy Lie algebras and the LCS formula for subarrangements of A_n
Published in International Mathematics Research Notices, 8 (2009) 1421-1432 • View PublicationBIB
If X is the complement of a hypersurface in P^n, then Kohno showed that the nilpotent completion of the fundamental group is isomorphic to the nilpotent completion of the holonomy Lie algebra of X. When X is the complement of a hyperplane arrangement A, the ranks phi_k of the lower central series quotients of the fundamental group of X are known for isolated examples, and for two special classes: if X is hypersolvable (in which case the quadratic closure of the cohomology ring is Koszul), or if the holonomy Lie algebra decomposes in degree three as a direct product of local components. In this paper, we use the holonomy Lie algebra to obtain a formula for phi_k when A is a subarrangement of A_n. This extends Kohno's result for braid arrangements, and provides an instance of an LCS formula for arrangements which are not decomposable or hypersolvable.
