On $3$-graphs with no four vertices spanning exactly two edges
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $D_2$ denote the $3$-uniform hypergraph with $4$ vertices and $2$ edges. Answering a question of Alon and Shapira, we prove an induced removal lemma for $D_2$ having polynomial bounds. We also prove an Erdős-Hajnal-type result: every induced $D_2$-free hypergraph on $n$ vertices contains a clique or an independent set of size $n^{c}$ for some absolute constant $c > 0$. In the case of both problems, $D_2$ is the only nontrivial $k$-uniform hypergraph with $k\geq 3$ which admits a polynomial bound.

On the asymptotic confirmation of the Faudree-Lehel Conjecture for general graphs
Given a simple graph $G$, the {\it irregularity strength} of $G$, denoted by $s(G)$, is the least positive integer $k$ such that there is a weight assignment on edges $f: E(G) \to \{1,2,\dots, k\}$ attributing distinct weighted degrees: $\tilde f(v):= \sum_{u: \{u,v\}\in E(G)} f(\{u,v\})$ to all vertices $v\in V(G)$. It is straightforward that $s(G) \geq n/d$ for every $d$-regular graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with $d>1$. In 1987, Faudree and Lehel conjectured in turn that there is an absolute constant $c$ such that $s(G) \leq n/d + c$ for all such graphs. Even though the conjecture has remained open in almost all relevant cases, it is more generally believed that there exists a universal constant $c$ such that $s(G) \leq n/δ+ c$ for every graph $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree $δ\geq 1$ which does not contain an isolated edge. In this paper we confirm that the generalized Faudree-Lehel Conjecture holds for graphs with $δ\geq n^β$ where $β$ is any fixed constant larger than $0.8$. Furthermore, we confirm that the conjecture holds in general asymptotically. That is we prove that for any $\varepsilon\in(0,0.25)$ there exist absolute constants $c_1, c_2$ such that for all graphs $G$ on $n$ vertices with minimum degree %at least $δ\geq 1$ and without isolated edges, $s(G) \leq \frac{n}δ(1+\frac{c_1}{δ^{\varepsilon}})+c_2$, thus extending in various aspects and strengthening a recent result of Przybyło, who showed that $s(G) \leq \frac{n}{d}(1+ \frac{1}{\ln^{ε/19}n})=\frac{n}{d}(1+o(1))$ for $d$-regular graphs with $d\in [\ln^{1+ε} n, n/\ln^εn]$, and improving an earlier general upper bound: $s(G)< 6\frac{n}δ+6$ of Kalkowski, Karoński and Pfender.

Weak saturation of multipartite hypergraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given $q$-uniform hypergraphs ($q$-graphs) $F,G$ and $H$, where $G$ is a spanning subgraph of $F$, $G$ is called weakly $H$-saturated in $F$ if the edges in $E(F)\setminus E(G)$ admit an ordering $e_1,\dots, e_k$ so that for all $i\in [k]$ the hypergraph $G\cup \{e_1,\dots,e_i\}$ contains an isomorphic copy of $H$ which in turn contains the edge $e_i$. The weak saturation number of $H$ in $F$ is the smallest size of an $H$-weakly saturated subgraph of $F$. Weak saturation was introduced by Bollobás in 1968, but despite decades of study our understanding of it is still limited. The main difficulty lies in proving lower bounds on weak saturation numbers, which typically withstands combinatorial methods and requires arguments of algebraic or geometrical nature. In our main contribution in this paper we determine exactly the weak saturation number of complete multipartite $q$-graphs in the directed setting, for any choice of parameters. This generalizes a theorem of Alon from 1985. Our proof combines the exterior algebra approach from the works of Kalai with the use of the colorful exterior algebra motivated by the recent work of Bulavka, Goodarzi and Tancer on the colorful fractional Helly theorem. In our second contribution answering a question of Kronenberg, Martins and Morrison, we establish a link between weak saturation numbers of bipartite graphs in the clique versus in a complete bipartite host graph. In a similar fashion we asymptotically determine the weak saturation number of any complete $q$-partite $q$-graph in the clique, generalizing another result of Kronenberg et al.
On the minimum degree of minimal Ramsey graphs for cliques versus cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $G$ is said to be $q$-Ramsey for a $q$-tuple of graphs $(H_1,\ldots,H_q)$, denoted by $G\to_q(H_1,\ldots,H_q)$, if every $q$-edge-coloring of $G$ contains a monochromatic copy of $H_i$ in color $i,$ for some $i\in[q]$. Let $s_q(H_1,\ldots,H_q)$ denote the smallest minimum degree of $G$ over all graphs $G$ that are minimal $q$-Ramsey for $(H_1,\ldots,H_q)$ (with respect to subgraph inclusion). The study of this parameter was initiated in 1976 by Burr, Erdős and Lovász, who determined its value precisely for a pair of cliques. Over the past two decades the parameter $s_q$ has been studied by several groups of authors, the main focus being on the symmetric case, where $H_i\cong H$ for all $i\in [q]$. The asymmetric case, in contrast, has received much less attention. In this paper, we make progress in this direction, studying asymmetric tuples consisting of cliques, cycles and trees. We determine $s_2(H_1,H_2)$ when $(H_1,H_2)$ is a pair of one clique and one tree, a pair of one clique and one cycle, and when it is a pair of two different cycles. We also generalize our results to multiple colors and obtain bounds on $s_q(C_\ell,\ldots,C_\ell,K_t,\ldots,K_t)$ in terms of the size of the cliques $t$, the number of cycles, and the number of cliques. Our bounds are tight up to logarithmic factors when two of the three parameters are fixed.

Small subsets without $k$-term arithmetic progressions
Szemerédi's theorem implies that there are $2^{o(n)}$ subsets of $[n]$ which do not contain a $k$-term arithmetic progression. A sparse analogue of this statement was obtained by Balogh, Morris, and Samotij, using the hypergraph container method: For any $β> 0$ there exists $C > 0$, such that if $m \ge Cn^{1 - 1/(k-1)}$ then there are at most $β^m \binom{n}{m}$ $m$-element subsets of $\{1, \ldots, n\}$ without a $k$-term arithmetic progression. We give a short, inductive proof of this result. Consequently, this provides a short proof of the Szemerédi's theorem in random subsets of integers.

A Bilinear Bogolyubov Argument in Abelian Groups
The bilinear Bogolyubov argument for $\mathbb{F}_p^n$ states that if we start with a dense set $A \subseteq \mathbb{F}_p^n \times \mathbb{F}_p^n$ and carry out sufficiently many steps where we replace every row or every column of $A$ by the set difference of it with itself, then inside the resulting set we obtain a bilinear variety of codimension bounded in terms of density of $A$. In this paper, we generalize the bilinear Bogolyubov argument to arbitrary finite abelian groups. Namely, if $G$ and $H$ are finite abelian groups and $A \subseteq G \times H$ is a subset of density $δ$, then the procedure above applied to $A$ results in a set that contains a bilinear analogue of a Bohr set, with the appropriately defined codimension bounded above by $\log^{O(1)} (O(δ^{-1}))$.

The Multipartite Ramsey numbers $m_j(nK_2,C_7)$
Assume that $K_{j\times n}$ be a complete, multipartite graph consisting of $j$ partite sets and $n$ vertices in each partite set. For given graphs $G_1$ and $G_2$, the multipartite Ramsey number (M-R-number) $m_j(G_1, G_2)$ is the smallest integer $t$ such that any subgraph $G$ of the $K_{j\times t}$, either $G$ contains a copy of $G_1$ or its complement relative to $K_{j\times t}$ contains a copy of $G_2$. C. J. Jayawardene, E. T. Baskoro et al. $(2016)$ gave the size of M-R-numbe $m_j(nK_2, C_7)$ for $j \geq 2 $ and $n\leq 6$. Y. Rowshan et al. $(2021)$ gave the size of M-R-number $m_j(nK_2, C_7)$ for $j = 2,3, 4$ and $n\geq 2$. In this article we compute the size of M-R-number $m_j(nK_2,C_7)$, for each $j\geq 5$ and $n\geq 2$.

Improved Upper Bound on the Linear Turán Number of the Crown
A linear $3$-graph is a set of vertices along with a set of edges, which are three element subsets of the vertices, such that any two edges intersect in at most one vertex. The crown, $C$, is a specific $3$-graph consisting of three pairwise disjoint edges, called jewels, along with a fourth edge intersecting all three jewels. For a linear $3$-graph, $F$, the linear Turán number, $ex(n,F)$, is the maximum number of edges in any linear $3$-graph that does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. Currently, the best known bounds on the linear Turán number of the crown are \[ 6 \Big \lfloor \frac{n-3}{4}\Big \rfloor \leq ex(n, C) \leq 2n. \] In this paper, the upper bound is improved to $ex(n,C) < \frac{5n}{3}$.

A non-aligning variant of generalized Turán problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
In the so-called generalized Turán problems we study the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex $F$-free graph $G$. Here we introduce a variant, where $F$ is not forbidden, but we restrict how copies of $H$ and $F$ can be placed in $G$. More precisely, given an integer $n$ and graphs $H$ and $F$, what is the largest number of copies of $H$ in an $n$-vertex graph such that the vertex set of that copy does not contain and is not contained in the vertex set of a copy of $F$? We solve this problem for some instances, give bounds in other instances, and we use our results to determine the generalized Turán number for some pairs of graphs.

Erdős-Gyárfás Conjecture for $P_8$-free graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph is $P_8$-free if it contains no induced subgraph isomorphic to the path $P_8$ on eight vertices. In 1995, Erdős and Gyárfás conjectured that every graph of minimum degree at least three contains a cycle whose length is a power of two. In this paper, we confirm the conjecture for $P_8$-free graphs by showing that there exists a cycle of length four or eight in every $P_8$-free graph with minimum degree at least three.

Bipartite-ness under smooth conditions
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs, the {\it Zarankiewicz number} $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})$ is the maximum number of edges in an $m$ by $n$ bipartite graph $G$ that does not contain any member of $\mathcal{F}$ as a subgraph (such $G$ is called {\it $\mathcal{F}$-free}). For $1\leq β<α<2$, a family $\mathcal{F}$ of bipartite graphs is $(α,β)$-{\it smooth} if for some $ρ>0$ and every $m\leq n$, $z(m,n,\mathcal{F})=ρm n^{α-1}+O(n^β)$. Motivated by their work on a conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits on compactness and a classic result of Andrásfai, Erdős and Sós, in \cite{AKSV} Allen, Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte proved that for any $(α,β)$-smooth family $\mathcal{F}$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $ρ(\frac{2n}{5}+o(n))^{α-1}$ is bipartite. In this paper, we strengthen their result by showing that for every real $δ>0$, there exists $k_0$ such that for all odd $k\geq k_0$ and sufficiently large $n$, any $n$-vertex $\mathcal{F}\cup\{C_k\}$-free graph with minimum degree at least $δn^{α-1}$ is bipartite. Furthermore, our result holds under a more relaxed notion of smoothness, which include the families $\mathcal{F}$ consisting of the single graph $K_{s,t}$ when $t\gg s$. We also prove an analogous result for $C_{2\ell}$-free graphs for every $\ell\geq 2$, which complements a result of Keevash, Sudakov and Verstraëte in \cite{KSV}.

On the Left Connected Subalgebra of the Descent Algebra of a Coxeter Group of Classical Type
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Coxeter group of classical type $A_n$, $B_n$ or $D_n$ contains a chain of subgroups of the same type. We show that intersections of conjugates of these subgroups are again of the same type, and make precise in which sense and to what extent this property is exclusive to the classical types of Coxeter groups. As the main tool for the proof we use Solomon's descent algebra. Using Stirling numbers, we express certain basis elements of the descent algebra as polynomials and derive explicit multiplication formulas for a commutative subalgebra of the descent algebra.

Ramsey Numbers of Trails
Published • View Publication • BIB
We initiate the study of Ramsey numbers of trails. Let $k \geq 2$ be a positive integer. The Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is defined as the the smallest number $n$ such that for every graph $H$ with $n$ vertices, $H$ or the complete $\overline{H}$ contains a trail with $k$ vertices. We prove that the Ramsey number of trails with $k$ vertices is at most $k$ and at least $2\sqrt{k}+Θ(1)$. This improves the trivial upper bound of $\lfloor 3k/2\rfloor -1$.
Universality in minor-closed graph classes
Stanislaw Ulam asked whether there exists a universal countable planar graph (that is, a countable planar graph that contains every countable planar graph as a subgraph). János Pach (1981) answered this question in the negative. We strengthen this result by showing that every countable graph that contains all countable planar graphs must contain (i) an infinite complete graph as a minor, and (ii) a subdivision of the complete graph $K_t$ with multiplicity $t$, for every finite $t$. On the other hand, we construct a countable graph that contains all countable planar graphs and has several key properties such as linear colouring numbers, linear expansion, and every finite $n$-vertex subgraph has a balanced separator of size $O(\sqrt{n})$. The graph is $\mathcal{T}_6\boxtimes P_{\!\infty}$, where $\mathcal{T}_k$ is the universal treewidth-$k$ countable graph (which we define explicitly), $P_{\!\infty}$ is the 1-way infinite path, and $\boxtimes$ denotes the strong product. More generally, for every positive integer $t$ we construct a countable graph that contains every countable $K_t$-minor-free graph and has the above key properties. Our final contribution is a construction of a countable graph that contains every countable $K_t$-minor-free graph as an induced subgraph, has linear colouring numbers and linear expansion, and contains no subdivision of the countably infinite complete graph (implying (ii) above is best possible).

On the $A_α$ spectral radius and $A_α$ energy of non-strongly connected digraphs
Let $A_α(G)$ be the $A_α$-matrix of a digraph $G$ and $λ_{α1}, λ_{α2}, \ldots, λ_{αn}$ be the eigenvalues of $A_α(G)$. Let $ρ_α(G)$ be the $A_α$ spectral radius of $G$ and $E_α(G)=\sum_{i=1}^n λ_{αi}^2$ be the $A_α$ energy of $G$ by using second spectral moment. Let $\mathcal{G}_n^m$ be the set of non-strongly connected digraphs with order $n$, which contain a unique strong component with order $m$ and some directed trees which are hung on each vertex of the strong component. In this paper, we characterize the digraph which has the maximal $A_α$ spectral radius and the maximal (minimal) $A_α$ energy in $\mathcal{G}_n^m$.

On the size of special class 1 graphs and $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known theorem of Vizing states that if $G$ is a simple graph with maximum degree $Δ$, then the chromatic index $χ'(G)$ of $G$ is $Δ$ or $Δ+1$. A graph $G$ is class 1 if $χ'(G)=Δ$, and class 2 if $χ'(G)=Δ+1$; $G$ is $Δ$-critical if it is connected, class 2 and $χ'(G-e)<χ'(G)$ for every $e\in E(G)$. A long-standing conjecture of Vizing from 1968 states that every $Δ$-critical graph on $n$ vertices has at least $(n(Δ-1)+ 3)/2$ edges. We initiate the study of determining the minimum number of edges of class 1 graphs $G$, in addition, $χ'(G+e)=χ'(G)+1$ for every $e\in E(\overline{G})$. Such graphs have intimate relation to $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs, where a non-complete graph $G$ is $(P_3; k)$-co-critical if there exists a $k$-coloring of $E(G)$ such that $G$ does not contain a monochromatic copy of $P_3$ but every $k$-coloring of $E(G+e)$ contains a monochromatic copy of $P_3$ for every $e\in E(\overline{G})$. We use the bound on the size of the aforementioned class 1 graphs to study the minimum number of edges over all $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graphs. We prove that if $G$ is a $(P_3; k)$-co-critical graph on $n\ge k+2$ vertices, then \[e(G)\ge {k \over 2}\left(n- \left\lceil {k \over 2} \right\rceil - \varepsilon\right) + {\lceil k/2 \rceil+\varepsilon \choose 2},\] where $\varepsilon$ is the remainder of $n-\lceil k/2 \rceil $ when divided by $2$. This bound is best possible for all $k \ge 1$ and $n \ge \left\lceil {3k /2} \right\rceil +2$.

The lengths for which bicrucial square-free permutations exist
Published • View Publication • BIB
A square is a factor $S = (S_1; S_2)$ where $S_1$ and $S_2$ have the same pattern, and a permutation is said to be square-free if it contains no non-trivial squares. The permutation is further said to be bicrucial if every extension to the left or right contains a square. We completely classify for which $n$ there exists a bicrucial square-free permutation of length $n$.

Rank of matrices with entries from a multiplicative group

We establish lower bounds on the rank of matrices in which all but the diagonal entries lie in a multiplicative group of small rank. Applying these bounds we show that the distance sets of finite pointsets in $\mathbb{R}^d$ generate high rank multiplicative groups and that multiplicative groups of small rank cannot contain large sumsets.
Minimal induced subgraphs of two classes of 2-connected non-Hamiltonian graphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 345, Issue 7, July 2022, 112869 • View Publication • BIB
In 1981, Duffus, Gould, and Jacobson showed that every connected graph either has a Hamiltonian path, or contains a claw ($K_{1,3}$) or a net (a fixed six-vertex graph) as an induced subgraph. This implies that subject to being connected, these two are the only minimal (under taking induced subgraphs) graphs with no Hamiltonian path. Brousek (1998) characterized the minimal graphs that are $2$-connected, non-Hamiltonian and do not contain the claw as an induced subgraph. We characterize the minimal graphs that are $2$-connected and non-Hamiltonian for two classes of graphs: (1) split graphs, (2) triangle-free graphs. We remark that testing for Hamiltonicity is NP-hard in both of these classes.
