Arc-disjoint in- and out-branchings in semicomplete split digraphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
An \emph{out-tree (in-tree)} is an oriented tree where every vertex except one, called the \emph{root}, has in-degree (out-degree) one. An \emph{out-branching $B^+_u$ (in-branching $B^-_u$)} of a digraph $D$ is a spanning out-tree (in-tree) rooted at $u$. A \emph{good $(u,v)$-pair} in $D$ is a pair of branchings $B^+_u, B^-_v$ which are arc-disjoint. Thomassen proved that deciding whether a digraph has any good pair is NP-complete. A \emph{semicomplete split digraph} is a digraph where the vertex set is the disjoint union of two non-empty sets, $V_1$ and $V_2$, such that $V_1$ is an independent set, the subdigraph induced by $V_2$ is semicomplete, and every vertex in $V_1$ is adjacent to every vertex in $V_2$. In this paper, we prove that every $2$-arc-strong semicomplete split digraph $D$ contains a good $(u, v)$-pair for any choice of vertices $u, v$ of $D$, thereby confirming a conjecture by Bang-Jensen and Wang [Bang-Jensen and Wang, J. Graph Theory, 2024].

Partite saturation number of cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
A graph $H$ is said to be $F$-saturated relative to $G$, if $H$ does not contain any copy of $F$, but the addition of any edge $e$ in $E(G)\backslash E(H)$ would create a copy of $F$. The minimum size of an $F$-saturated graph relative to $G$ is denoted by $sat(G,F)$. Let $K_k^n$ be the complete $k$-partite graph containing $n$ vertices in each part and $C_\ell$ be the cycle of length $\ell$. In this paper we give an asymptotically tight bound of $sat(K_k^n,C_\ell)$ for all $ \ell \geq 4, k \geq 2$ except $(\ell,k)=(4,4)$. Moreover, we determined the exact value of $sat(K_k^n,C_\ell)$ for $ k>\ell=4 $ and $5 \geq \ell>k \geq 3$ and $(\ell,k)=(6,2)$.

Clique factors in randomly perturbed graphs: the transition points
A randomly perturbed graph $G^p = G_α\cup G(n,p)$ is obtained by taking a deterministic $n$-vertex graph $G_α= (V, E)$ with minimum degree $δ(G)\geq αn$ and adding the edges of the binomial random graph $G(n,p)$ defined on the same vertex set $V$. For which value $p$ (depending on $α$) does the graph $G^p$ contain a $K_r$-factor (a spanning collection of vertex-disjoint $K_r$-copies) with high probability? The order of magnitude of the minimal value of $p$ has been determined whenever $α\neq 1- \frac{s}{r}$ for an integer $s$ (see Han, Morris, and Treglown [RSA, 2021] and Balogh, Treglown, and Wagner [CPC, 2019]). We establish the minimal probability $p_s$ (up to a constant factor) for all values of $α= 1-\frac{s}{r} \leq \frac 12$, and show that the threshold exhibits a polynomial jump at $α= 1-\frac{s}{r}$ compared to the surrounding intervals. An extremal example $G_α$ which shows that $p_s$ is optimal up to a constant factor differs from the previous (usually multipartite) examples in containing a pseudorandom induced subgraph.

The quadric flat torus theorem
We prove a flat torus theorem for quadric complexes. In particular, we show that if a non-cyclic free abelian group $G$ acts metrically properly on a quadric complex $X$, then $G \cong \mathbb{Z}^2$ and $X$ contains a $G$-invariant isometric copy of the regular square tiling of the plane. Along the way, we also give a complete proof of the fact that any closed surface subgroup in the fundamental group of a combinatorial 2-complex is represented by a combinatorial map from a cellulation of the surface that is locally injective away from vertices.
Separable Drawings: Extendability and Crossing-Free Hamiltonian Cycles
Published • View Publication • BIB
Generalizing pseudospherical drawings, we introduce a new class of simple drawings, which we call separable drawings. In a separable drawing, every edge can be closed to a simple curve that intersects each other edge at most once. Curves of different edges might interact arbitrarily. Most notably, we show that (1) every separable drawing of any graph on $n$ vertices in the plane can be extended to a simple drawing of the complete graph $K_{n}$, (2) every separable drawing of $K_{n}$ contains a crossing-free Hamiltonian cycle and is plane Hamiltonian connected, and (3) every generalized convex drawing and every 2-page book drawing is separable. Further, the class of separable drawings is a proper superclass of the union of generalized convex and 2-page book drawings. Hence, our results on plane Hamiltonicity extend recent work on generalized convex drawings by Bergold et al. (SoCG 2024).

Unitals without O'Nan configurations are classical if they admit all translations
We prove the statement in the title: if a (finite) unital admits all translations and contains no O'Nan configurations then the unital is classical, i.e., isomorphic to the Hermitian unital of the same order.
Canonical Ramsey numbers of sparse graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The canonical Ramsey theorem of Erdős and Rado implies that for any graph $H$, any edge-coloring (with an arbitrary number of colors) of a sufficiently large complete graph $K_N$ contains a monochromatic, lexicographic, or rainbow copy of $H$. The least such $N$ is called the Erdős-Rado number of $H$, denoted by $ER(H)$. Erdős-Rado numbers of cliques have received considerable attention, and in this paper we extend this line of research by studying Erdős-Rado numbers of sparse graphs. For example, we prove that if $H$ has bounded degree, then $ER(H)$ is polynomial in $|V(H)|$ if $H$ is bipartite, but exponential in general. We also study the closely-related problem of constrained Ramsey numbers. For a given tree $S$ and given path $P_t$, we study the minimum $N$ such that every edge-coloring of $K_N$ contains a monochromatic copy of $S$ or a rainbow copy of $P_t$. We prove a nearly optimal upper bound for this problem, which differs from the best known lower bound by a function of inverse-Ackermann type.

More unit distances in arbitrary norms
Published in Bull. Lond. Math. Soc. 57 (2025), 2885--2901 • View Publication • BIB
For $d\geq 2$ and any norm on $\mathbb R^d$, we prove that there exists a set of $n$ points that spans at least $(\tfrac d2-o(1))n\log_2n$ unit distances under this norm for every $n$. This matches the upper bound recently proved by Alon, Bucić, and Sauermann for typical norms (i.e., norms lying in a comeagre set). We also show that for $d\geq 3$ and a typical norm on $\mathbb R^d$, the unit distance graph of this norm contains a copy of $K_{d,m}$ for all $m$.
Eigenvectors of the De Bruijn Graph Laplacian: A Natural Basis for the Cut and Cycle Space
We study the Laplacian of the undirected De Bruijn graph over an alphabet $A$ of order $k$. While the eigenvalues of this Laplacian were found in 1998 by Delorme and Tillich [1], an explicit description of its eigenvectors has remained elusive. In this work, we find these eigenvectors in closed form and show that they yield a natural and canonical basis for the cut- and cycle-spaces of De Bruijn graphs. Remarkably, we find that the cycle basis we construct is a basis for the cycle space of both the undirected and the directed De Bruijn graph. This is done by developing an analogue of the Fourier transform on the De Bruijn graph, which acts to diagonalize the Laplacian. Moreover, we show that the cycle-space of De Bruijn graphs, when considering all possible orders of $k$ simultaneously, contains a rich algebraic structure, that of a graded Hopf algebra.

Bipartite and Euclidean Gallai-Ramsey Theory
In this paper, we investigate the following Gallai-Ramsey question: how large must a complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1, n_2}$ be before any coloring of its edges with $r$ colors contains either a monochromatic copy of $G = K_{s,t}$ or a rainbow copy of $H = K_{s,t}$? We demonstrate that the answer is linear in $r$, and provide more precise bounds for the specific case $s = 2$. Furthermore, we also consider the following Euclidean Gallai-Ramsey question: given a configuration $H$ in Euclidean space, what is the smallest $n$ such that any $r$-coloring of $n$-dimensional Euclidean space contains a monochromatic or rainbow configuration congruent to $H$? Through a natural translation between edge colorings of the complete bipartite graph $K_{n_1,n_2}$ and colorings of a subset of $(n_1+n_2)$-dimensional Euclidean space, we prove new upper bounds on $n$ for some configurations which can be expressed as Cartesian products of simplices.

The maximum spectral radius of $θ_{1,3,3}$-free graphs with given size
A graph $G$ is said to be $F$-free if it does not contain $F$ as a subgraph. A theta graph, say $θ_{l_1,l_2,l_3}$, is the graph obtained by connecting two distinct vertices with three internally disjoint paths of length $l_1, l_2, l_3$, where $l_1\leq l_2\leq l_3$ and $l_2\geq2$. Recently, Li, Zhao and Zou [arXiv:2409.15918v1] characterized the $θ_{1,p,q}$-free graph of size $m$ having the largest spectral radius, where $q\geq p\geq3$ and $p+q\geq2k+1\geq7$, and proposed a problem on characterizing the graphs with the maximum spectral radius among $θ_{1,3,3}$-free graphs. In this paper, we consider this problem and determine the maximum spectral radius of $θ_{1,3,3}$-free graphs with size $m$ and characterize the extremal graph. Up to now, all the graphs in $\mathcal{G}(m,θ_{1,p,q})$ which have the largest spectral radius have been determined, where $q\geq p\geq 2$.
Maximum $k$-colourable induced subgraphs in $(P_5+rK_1)$-free graphs
We show that for any nonnegative integer $r$, the Weighted Maximum List-$k$-Colourable Induced Subgraph problem can be solved in polynomial time for input graphs that do not contain $(P_5+ rK_1)$ as an induced subgraph, and give an explicit algorithm demonstrating this. This answers a question of Agrawal et al.\ (2024).

The number of edges in graphs with bounded clique number and circumference
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let $\cal H$ be a family of graphs. The Turán number ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ is the maximum possible number of edges in an $n$-vertex graph which does not contain any member of $\cal H$ as a subgraph. As a common generalization of Turán's theorem and Erdős-Gallai theorem on the Turán number of matchings, Alon and Frankl determined ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for ${\cal H}=\{K_r,M_k\}$, where $M_k$ is a matching of size $k$. Replacing $M_k$ by $P_k$, Katona and Xiao obtained the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r,P_k\}$ for $r \leq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor$ and sufficiently large $n$. In addition, they proposed a conjecture for the case of $r \geq \lfloor k/2 \rfloor+1$ and sufficiently large $n$. Motivated by the fact that the result for ${\rm ex}(n,P_k)$ can be deduced from the one for ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal C}_{\geq k})$, we investigate the Turán number of ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$ in this paper. In other words, we aim to determine the maximum number of edges in graphs with clique number at most $r-1$ and circumference at most $k-1$. For ${\cal H}=\{K_r, {\cal C}_{\geq k}\}$, we are able to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for $r \geq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+2$ and all $n$. As an application of this result, we confirm Katona and Xiao's conjecture in a stronger form. For $r \leq \lfloor (k-1)/2\rfloor+1$, we manage to show the value of ${\rm ex}(n,{\cal H})$ for sufficiently large $n$.

When Joints Meet Extremal Graph Theory: Hypergraph Joints
Published • View Publication • BIB
The Kruskal--Katona theorem determines the maximum number of $d$-cliques in an $n$-edge $(d-1)$-uniform hypergraph. A generalization of the theorem was proposed by Bollobás and Eccles, called the partial shadow problem. The problem asks to determine the maximum number of $r$-sets of vertices that contain at least $d$ edges in an $n$-edge $(d-1)$-uniform hypergraph. In our previous work, we obtained an asymptotically tight upper bound via its connection to the joints problem, a problem in incidence geometry. In a different direction, Friedgut and Kahn generalized the Kruskal--Katona theorem by determining the maximum number of copies of any fixed hypergraph in an $n$-edge hypergraph, up to a multiplicative factor. In this paper, using the connection to the joints problem again, we generalize our previous work to show an analogous partial shadow phenomenon for any hypergraph, generalizing Friedgut and Kahn's result. The key idea is to encode the graph-theoretic problem with new kinds of joints that we call hypergraph joints. Our main theorem is a generalization of the joints theorem that upper bounds the number of hypergraph joints, which the partial shadow phenomenon immediately follows from. In addition, with an appropriate notion of multiplicities, our theorem also generalizes a generalization of Hölder's inequality considered by Finner.

On Subgroup Separability and Membership Problems in Twisted Right-Angled Artin Groups
Published • View Publication • BIB
We characterize twisted right-angled Artin groups (T-RAAGs) that are subgroup separable using only their defining mixed graphs: such a group is subgroup separable if and only if the underlying simplicial graph contains neither induced paths nor squares on four vertices. This generalizes the results of Metaftsis-Raptis on classical right-angled Artin groups. Additionally, we show that the subgroup membership problem is decidable when the group is coherent, which occurs precisely when the defining mixed graph is chordal. We also address the rational and submonoid membership problems by exhibiting a cone-family of graphs for which the corresponding T-RAAGs have decidable rational and submonoid membership problems.
On the action of the symmetric group on the free LAnKe: a question of Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs
Published • View Publication • BIB
A LAnKe (also known as a Lie algebra of the $n$th kind, or a Filippov algebra) is a vector space equipped with a skew-symmetric $n$-linear form that satisfies the generalized Jacobi identity. The symmetric group $\mathfrak{S}_m$ acts on the multilinear part of the free LAnKe on $m=(n-1)k+1$ generators, where $k$ is the number of brackets, by permutation of the generators. The corresponding representation was studied by Friedmann, Hanlon, Stanley and Wachs, who asked whether for $n \ge k$, its irreducible decomposition contains no summand whose Young diagram has at most $k-1$ columns. The answer is affirmative if $k \le 3$. In this paper, we show that the answer is affirmative for all $k$. A proof has been given recently by Friedmann, Hanlon and Wachs. The two proofs are completely different.

Clique density vs blowups
Published • View Publication • BIB
A well-known theorem of Nikiforov asserts that any graph with a positive $K_{r}$-density contains a logarithmic blowup of $K_r$. In this paper, we explore variants of Nikiforov's result in the following form. Given $r,t\in\mathbb{N}$, when a positive $K_{r}$-density implies the existence of a significantly larger (with almost linear size) blowup of $K_t$? Our results include: For an $n$-vertex ordered graph $G$ with no induced monotone path $P_{6}$, if its complement $\overline{G}$ has positive triangle density, then $\overline{G}$ contains a biclique of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}})$. This strengthens a recent result of Pach and Tomon. For general $k$, let $g(k)$ be the minimum $r\in \mathbb{N}$ such that for any $n$-vertex ordered graph $G$ with no induced monotone $P_{2k}$, if $\overline{G}$ has positive $K_r$-density, then $\overline{G}$ contains a biclique of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}})$. Using concentration of measure and the isodiametric inequality on high dimensional spheres, we provide constructions showing that, surprisingly, $g(k)$ grows quadratically. On the other hand, we relate the problem of upper bounding $g(k)$ to a certain Ramsey problem and determine $g(k)$ up to a factor of 2. Any incomparability graph with positive $K_{r}$-density contains a blowup of $K_r$ of size $Ω(\frac{n}{\log{n}}).$ This confirms a conjecture of Tomon in a stronger form. In doing so, we obtain a strong regularity type lemma for incomparability graphs with no large blowups of a clique, which is of independent interest. We also prove that any $r$-comparability graph with positive $K_{(2h-2)^{r}+1}$-density contains a blowup of $K_h$ of size $Ω(n)$, where the constant $(2h-2)^{r}+1$ is optimal. The $\frac{n}{\log n}$ size of the blowups in all our results are optimal up to a constant factor.
The (Symbolic and Numeric) Computational Challenges of Counting 0-1 Balanced Matrices
Published • View Publication • BIB
A chessboard has the property that every row and every column has as many white squares as black squares. In this mostly methodological note, we address the problem of counting such rectangular arrays with a fixed (numeric) number of rows, but an arbitrary (symbolic) number of columns. We first address the ``vanilla" problem where there are no restrictions, and then go on to discuss the still-more-challenging problem of counting such binary arrays that are not permitted to contain a specified (finite) set of horizontal patterns, and a specified set of vertical patterns. While we can rigorously prove that each such sequence satisfies some linear recurrence equation with polynomial coefficients, actually finding these recurrences poses major {\it symbolic}-computational challenges, that we can only meet in some small cases. In fact, just generating as many as possible terms of these sequences is a big {\it numeric}-computational challenge. This was tackled by computer whiz Ron H. Hardin, who contributed several such sequences, and computed quite a few terms of each. We extend Hardin's sequences quite considerably. We also talk about the much easier problem of counting such restricted arrays without balance conditions.

On cycles in monotone grid classes of permutations
Published • View Publication • BIB
We undertake a detailed investigation into the structure of permutations in monotone grid classes whose row-column graphs do not contain components with more than one cycle. Central to this investigation is a new decomposition, called the $M$-sum, which generalises the well-known notions of direct sum and skew sum, and enables a deeper understanding of the structure of permutations in these grid classes. Permutations which are indecomposable with respect to the $M$-sum play a crucial role in the structure of a grid class and of its subclasses, and this leads us to identify coils, a certain kind of permutation which corresponds to repeatedly traversing a chosen cycle in a particular manner. Harnessing this analysis, we give a precise characterisation for when a subclass of such a grid class is labelled well quasi-ordered, and we extend this to characterise (unlabelled) well quasi-ordering in certain cases. We prove that a large general family of these grid classes are finitely based, but we also exhibit other examples that are not, thereby disproving a conjecture from 2006 due to Huczynska and Vatter.

Auslander-Reiten combinatorics and $q$-characters of representations of affine quantum groups
For each simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ of simply-laced type, Hernandez and Leclerc introduced a certain category $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{Z}}$ of finite-dimensional representations of the quantum affine algebra of $\mathfrak{g}$, as well as certain subcategories $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{Z}}^{\leq ξ}$ depending on a choice of height function adapted to an orientation of the Dynkin graph of $\mathfrak{g}$. In our previous work we constructed an algebra homomorphism $\widetilde{D}_ξ$ whose domain contains the image of the Grothendieck ring of $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{Z}}^{\leq ξ}$ under the truncated $q$-character morphism $\widetildeχ_q$ corresponding to $ξ$. We exhibited a close relationship between the composition of $\widetilde{D}_ξ$ with $\widetildeχ_q$ and the morphism $\overline{D}$ recently introduced by Baumann, Kamnitzer and Knutson in their study of the equivariant homology of Mirković-Vilonen cycles. In this paper, we extend $\widetilde{D}_ξ$ in order to investigate its composition with Frenkel-Reshetikhin's original $q$-character morphism. Our main result consists in proving that the $q$-characters of all standard modules in $\mathcal{C}_{\mathbb{Z}}$ lie in the kernel of $\widetilde{D}_ξ$. This provides a large family of new non-trivial rational identities suggesting possible geometric interpretations.
