Transitive and Gallai colorings
A Gallai coloring of the complete graph is an edge-coloring with no rainbow triangle. This concept first appeared in the study of comparability graphs and anti-Ramsey theory. We introduce a transitive analogue for acyclic directed graphs, and generalize both notions to Coxeter systems, matroids and commutative algebras. It is shown that for any finite matroid (or oriented matroid), the maximal number of colors is equal to the matroid rank. This generalizes a result of Erdős-Simonovits-Sós for complete graphs. The number of Gallai (or transitive) colorings of the matroid that use at most $k$ colors is a polynomial in $k$. Also, for any acyclic oriented matroid, represented over the real numbers, the number of transitive colorings using at most 2 colors is equal to the number of chambers in the dual hyperplane arrangement. We count Gallai and transitive colorings of the root system of type A using the maximal number of colors, and show that, when equipped with a natural descent set map, the resulting quasisymmetric function is symmetric and Schur-positive.

Conjugacy Class Growth in Virtually Abelian Groups
Published in journal of Groups, complexity, cryptology, Volume 17, Issue 1 (February 24, 2025) gcc:13459 • View PublicationBIB
We study the conjugacy class growth function in finitely generated virtually abelian groups. That is, the number of elements in the ball of radius $n$ in the Cayley graph which intersect a fixed conjugacy class. In the class of virtually abelian groups, we prove that this function is always asymptotically equivalent to a polynomial. Furthermore, we show that in any affine Coxeter group, the degree of polynomial growth of a conjugacy class is equivalent to the reflection length of any element of that class.

Sketches, moves and partitions: counting regions of deformations of reflection arrangements
The collection of reflecting hyperplanes of a finite Coxeter group is called a reflection arrangement and it appears in many subareas of combinatorics and representation theory. We focus on the problem of counting regions of reflection arrangements and their deformations. Inspired by the recent work of Bernardi, we show that the notion of moves and sketches can be used to provide a uniform and explicit bijection between regions of (the Catalan deformation of) a reflection arrangement and certain non-nesting partitions. We then use the exponential formula to describe a statistic on these partitions such that distribution is given by the coefficients of the characteristic polynomial. Finally, we consider a sub-arrangement of type C arrangement called the threshold arrangement and its Catalan and Shi deformations.

$λ$-quiddités sur des produits directs d'anneaux
The aim of this article is to continue the study of the notion of $λ$-quiddity over a ring, which appeared during the study of Coxeter's friezes. For this, we will focus here on situations where the ring used can be seen as a direct product of unitary commutative rings. In particular, we will consider the cases of direct products of rings containing at least two rings of characteristic 0 and we will also consider some products of the type $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z} \times \mathbb{Z}/m\mathbb{Z}$.

Catalan numbers: from FC elements to classical diagram algebras
Let $W^c(A_n)$ be the set of fully commutative elements in the $A_n$-type Coxeter group. Using only the settings of their canonical form, we recount $W^c(A_n)$ by the recurrence that is taken as a definition of the Catalan number $C_{n+1}$ and we find the Narayana numbers as well as the Catalan triangle via suitable set partitions of $W^c(A_n)$. We determine the unique bijection between $W^c(A_n)$ and the set of non-crossing diagrams of $n+1$ strings that respects the diagrammatic multiplication by concatenation in the $A_n$-type Temperley-Lieb algebra, along with the two algorithms implementing this bijection and its inverse.

On maximal dihedral reflection subgroups and generalized noncrossing partitions
In this note, we give a new proof of a result of Matthew Dyer stating that in an arbitrary Coxeter group $W$, every pair $t,t'$ of distinct reflections lie in a unique maximal dihedral reflection subgroup of $W$. Our proof only relies on the combinatorics of words, in particular we do not use root systems at all. As an application, we deduce a new proof of a recent result of Delucchi-Paolini-Salvetti, stating that the poset $[1,c]_T$ of generalized noncrossing partitions in any Coxeter group of rank $3$ is a lattice. We achieve this by showing the more general statement that any interval of length $3$ in the absolute order on an arbitrary Coxeter group is a lattice. This implies that the interval group attached to any interval $[1,w]_T$ where $w$ is an element of an arbitrary Coxeter group with $\ell_T(w)=3$ is a quasi-Garside group.

Monotone links in DAHA and EHA
We define monotone links on a torus, obtained as projections of curves in the plane whose coordinates are monotone increasing. Using the work of Morton-Samuelson, to each monotone link we associate elements in the double affine Hecke algebra and the elliptic Hall algebra. In the case of torus knots (when the curve is a straight line), we recover symmetric function operators appearing in the rational shuffle conjecture. We show that the class of monotone links viewed as links in $\mathbb R^3$ coincides with the class of Coxeter links, studied by Oblomkov-Rozansky in the setting of the flag Hilbert scheme. When the curve satisfies a convexity condition, we recover positroid links that we previously studied. In the convex case, we conjecture that the associated symmetric functions are Schur positive, extending a recent conjecture of Blasiak-Haiman-Morse-Pun-Seelinger, and we speculate on the relation to Khovanov-Rozansky homology. Our constructions satisfy a skein recurrence where the base case consists of piecewise almost linear curves. We show that convex piecewise almost linear curves give rise to algebraic links.
Subexpressions and the Bruhat order for double cosets
The Bruhat order on a Coxeter group is often described by examining subexpressions of a reduced expression. We prove that an analogous description applies to the Bruhat order on double cosets. This establishes the compatibility of the Bruhat order on double cosets with concatenation, leading to compatibility between the monoidal structure and the ideal of lower terms in the singular Hecke 2-category. We also prove other fundamental properties of this ideal of lower terms.
Demazure operators for double cosets
For any Coxeter system, and any double coset for two standard parabolic subgroups, we introduce a Demazure operator. These operators form a basis for morphism spaces in a category we call the nilCoxeter category, and we also present this category by generators and relations. We prove a generalization to this context of Demazure's celebrated theorem on Frobenius extensions. This generalized theorem serves as a criterion for ensuring the proper behavior of singular Soergel bimodules.

Prism permutations in the Bruhat order
The boolean elements of a Coxeter group have been characterized and shown to possess many interesting properties and applications. Here we introduce "prism permutations," a generalization of those elements, characterizing the prism permutations equivalently in terms of their reduced words and in terms of pattern containment. As part of this work, we introduce the notion of "calibration" to permutation patterns.
Two classes of posets with real-rooted chain polynomials
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 31 (2024), Research Paper 4.16, 22pp (electronic) • View PublicationBIB
The coefficients of the chain polynomial of a finite poset enumerate chains in the poset by their number of elements. It has been a challenging open problem to determine which posets have real-rooted chain polynomials. Two new classes of posets, namely those of all rank-selected subposets of Cohen-Macaulay simplicial posets and all noncrossing partition lattices associated to finite Coxeter groups, are shown to have this property. The first result generalizes one of Brenti and Welker. As a special case, the descent enumerator of permutations of the set $\{1, 2,\dots,n\}$ which have ascents at specified positions is shown to be real-rooted, hence log-concave and unimodal, and a good estimate for the location of the peak is deduced.
On $T$-invariant subvarieties of symplectic Grassmannians and representability of rank $2$ symplectic matroids over ${\mathbb C}$
For the symplectic Grassmannian $\text{SpG}(2,2n)$ of $2$-dimensional isotropic subspaces in a $2n$-dimensional vector space over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero endowed with a symplectic form and with the natural action of an $n$-dimensional torus $T$ on it, we characterize its irreducible $T$-invariant subvarieties. This characterization is in terms of symplectic Coxeter matroids, and we use this result to give a complete characterization of the symplectic matroids of rank $2$ which are representable over $\mathbb{C}$.
Friezes over $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{2}]$

A frieze on a polygon is a map from the diagonals of the polygon to an integral domain which respects the Ptolemy relation. Conway and Coxeter previously studied positive friezes over $\mathbb{Z}$ and showed that they are in bijection with triangulations of a polygon. We extend their work by studying friezes over $\mathbb Z[\sqrt{2}]$ and their relationships to dissections of polygons. We largely focus on the characterization of unitary friezes that arise from dissecting a polygon into triangles and quadrilaterals. We identify a family of dissections that give rise to unitary friezes and conjecture that this gives a complete classification of dissections which admit a unitary frieze.

Reflection Representations of Coxeter Groups and Homology of Coxeter Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study and classify a class of representations (called generalized geometric representations) of a Coxeter group of finite rank. These representations can be viewed as a natural generalization of the geometric representation. The classification is achieved by using characters of the integral homology group of certain graphs closely related to the Coxeter graph. On this basis, we also provide an explicit description of those representations on which the defining generators of the Coxeter group act by reflections.

Frieze patterns over algebraic numbers
Conway and Coxeter have shown that frieze patterns over positive rational integers are in bijection with triangulations of polygons. An investigation of frieze patterns over other subsets of the complex numbers has recently been initiated by Jorgensen and the first two authors. In this paper we first show that a ring of algebraic numbers has finitely many units if and only if it is an order in a quadratic number field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$ where $d<0$. We conclude that these are exactly the rings of algebraic numbers over which there are finitely many non-zero frieze patterns for any given height. We then show that apart from the cases $d\in \{-1,-2,-3,-7,-11\}$ all non-zero frieze patterns over the rings of integers $\mathcal{O}_d$ for $d<0$ have only integral entries and hence are known as (twisted) Conway-Coxeter frieze patterns.
On $(n,m)$-chromatic numbers of graphs having bounded sparsity parameters
An $(n,m)$-graph is characterised by having $n$ types of arcs and $m$ types of edges. A homomorphism of an $(n,m)$-graph $G$ to an $(n,m)$-graph $H$, is a vertex mapping that preserves adjacency, direction, and type. The $(n,m)$-chromatic number of $G$, denoted by $χ_{n,m}(G)$, is the minimum value of $|V(H)|$ such that there exists a homomorphism of $G$ to $H$. The theory of homomorphisms of $(n,m)$-graphs have connections with graph theoretic concepts like harmonious coloring, nowhere-zero flows; with other mathematical topics like binary predicate logic, Coxeter groups; and has application to the Query Evaluation Problem (QEP) in graph database. In this article, we show that the arboricity of $G$ is bounded by a function of $χ_{n,m}(G)$ but not the other way around. Additionally, we show that the acyclic chromatic number of $G$ is bounded by a function of $χ_{n,m}(G)$, a result already known in the reverse direction. Furthermore, we prove that the $(n,m)$-chromatic number for the family of graphs with a maximum average degree less than $2+ \frac{2}{4(2n+m)-1}$, including the subfamily of planar graphs with girth at least $8(2n+m)$, equals $2(2n+m)+1$. This improves upon previous findings, which proved the $(n,m)$-chromatic number for planar graphs with girth at least $10(2n+m)-4$ is $2(2n+m)+1$. It is established that the $(n,m)$-chromatic number for the family $\mathcal{T}_2$ of partial $2$-trees is both bounded below and above by quadratic functions of $(2n+m)$, with the lower bound being tight when $(2n+m)=2$. We prove $14 \leq χ_{(0,3)}(\mathcal{T}_2) \leq 15$ and $14 \leq χ_{(1,1)}(\mathcal{T}_2) \leq 21$ which improves both known lower bounds and the former upper bound. Moreover, for the latter upper bound, to the best of our knowledge we provide the first theoretical proof.

Classification des entiers monomialement irr{é}ductibles et g{é}n{é}ralisations
In this article, we study the classification of some natural numbers related to the combinatorics of congruence subgroups of the modular group. More precisely, we will focus here on the notion of minimal monomial solutions. These are the solutions of a matrix equation (also appearing in the study of Coxeter friezes), modulo an integer $N$, whose components are identical and minimal for this property. Our aim here is to study the integers $N$ for which the minimal monomial solutions satisfying some fixed conditions have an irreducibility property. In particular, we will classify the monomially irreducible integers which are the integers for which all the nonzero minimal monomial solutions are irreducible.

The aim of this paper is to introduce the concept of $q$-Coxeter transformation and $q$-Coxeter matrix for a connected acyclic bound quiver $(Q, I)$ with a homogeneous relations $I$, then to establish the relationship between $q$-Coxeter matrix and $q$-Cartan matrix of $(Q, I)$.

A facial order for torsion classes
We generalize the "facial weak order" of a finite Coxeter group to a partial order on a set of intervals in a complete lattice. We apply our construction to the lattice of torsion classes of a finite-dimensional algebra and consider its restriction to intervals coming from stability conditions. We give two additional interpretations of the resulting "facial semistable order": one using cover relations, and one using Bongartz completions of 2-term presilting objects. For $τ$-tilting finite algebras, this allows us to prove that the facial semistable order is a semidistributive lattice. We then show that, in any abelian length category, our new partial order can be partitioned into a set of completely semidistributive lattices, one of which is the original lattice of torsion classes.

A type $B$ analog of Ish arrangement
The Shi arrangement due to Shi (1986) and the Ish arrangement due to Armstrong (2013) are deformations of the type $A$ Coxeter arrangement that share many common properties. Motivated by a question of Armstrong and Rhoades since 2012 to seek for Ish arrangements of other types, in this paper we introduce an Ish arrangement of type $B$. We study this Ish arrangement through various aspects similar to as known in type $A$ with a main emphasis on freeness and supersolvability. Our method is based on the concept of $ψ$-digraphic arrangements recently introduced due to Abe and the authors with a type $B$ extension.
