Eulerian Central Limit Theorems and Carlitz identities in positive elements of Classical Weyl Groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Central Limit Theorems are known for the Eulerian statistic "descent" (or "excedance") in the symmetric group $\SSS_n$. Recently, Fulman, Kim, Lee and Petersen gave a Central Limit Theorem for "descent" over the alternating group $\AAA_n$ and also gave a Carlitz identity in $\AAA_n$ using descents. In this paper, we give a Central Limit Theorem in $\AAA_n$ involving excedances. We extend these to the positive elements in type B and type D Coxeter groups. Boroweic and Młotkowski enumerated type B descents over $\DD_n$, the type D Coxeter group and gave similar results. We refine their results for both the positive and negative part of $\DD_n$. Our results are a consequence of signed enumeration over these subsets.

Balance constants for Coxeter groups
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 376 (2023), 8973-9000 • View PublicationBIB
The $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture, originally formulated in 1968, is one of the best-known open problems in the theory of posets, stating that the balance constant (a quantity determined by the linear extensions) of any non-total order is at least $1/3$. By reinterpreting balance constants of posets in terms of convex subsets of the symmetric group, we extend the study of balance constants to convex subsets $C$ of any Coxeter group. Remarkably, we conjecture that the lower bound of $1/3$ still applies in any finite Weyl group, with new and interesting equality cases appearing. We generalize several of the main results towards the $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture to this new setting: we prove our conjecture when $C$ is a weak order interval below a fully commutative element in any acyclic Coxeter group (an generalization of the case of width-two posets), we give a uniform lower bound for balance constants in all finite Weyl groups using a new generalization of order polytopes to this context, and we introduce generalized semiorders for which we resolve the conjecture. We hope this new perspective may shed light on the proper level of generality in which to consider the $1/3$-$2/3$ Conjecture, and therefore on which methods are likely to be successful in resolving it.

Path isomorphisms between quiver Hecke and diagrammatic Bott-Samelson endomorphism algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct an explicit isomorphism between (truncations of) quiver Hecke algebras and Elias-Williamson's diagrammatic endomorphism algebras of Bott-Samelson bimodules. As a corollary, we deduce that the decomposition numbers of these algebras (including as examples the symmetric groups and generalised blob algebras) are tautologically equal to the associated $p$-Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials, provided that the characteristic is greater than the Coxeter number. We hence give an elementary and more explicit proof of the main theorem of Riche-Williamson's recent monograph and extend their categorical equivalence to cyclotomic Hecke algebras, thus solving Libedinsky-Plaza's categorical blob conjecture.

The modular Weyl-Kac character formula
Published • View PublicationBIB
We classify and explicitly construct the irreducible graded representations of anti-spherical Hecke categories which are concentrated in one degree. Each of these homogeneous representations is one-dimensional and can be cohomologically constructed via a BGG resolution involving every (infinite dimensional) standard representation of the category. We hence determine the complete first row of the inverse parabolic $p$-Kazhdan--Lusztig matrix for an arbitrary Coxeter group and an arbitrary parabolic subgroup. This generalises the Weyl--Kac character formula to all Coxeter systems (and their parabolics) and proves that this generalised formula is rigid with respect to base change to an arbitrary field.

Combinatorics of Type D Exceptional Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Exceptional sequences are important sequences of quiver representations in the study of representation theory of algebras. They are also closely related to the theory of cluster algebras and the combinatorics of Coxeter groups. We combinatorially classify exceptional sequences of a family of type D Dynkin quivers, and we show how our model for exceptional sequences connects to the combinatorics of type D noncrossing partitions.

Birational rowmotion and coxeter-motion on minuscule posets
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 28 (2021), P1.17 • View PublicationBIB
Birational rowmotion is a discrete dynamical system on the set of all positive real-valued functions on a finite poset, which is a birational lift of combinatorial rowmotion on order ideals. It is known that combinatorial rowmotion for a minuscule poset has order equal to the Coxeter number, and exhibits the file homomesy phenomenon for refined order ideal cardinality statistic. In this paper we generalize these results to the birational setting. Moreover, as a generalization of birational promotion on a product of two chains, we introduce birational Coxeter-motion on minuscule posets, and prove that it enjoys periodicity and file homomesy.
Local Orientation-Preserving Symmetry Preserving Operations on Polyhedra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unifying approaches by amongst others Archimedes, Kepler, Goldberg, Caspar and Klug, Coxeter, and Conway, and extending on a previous formalisation of the concept of local symmetry preserving (lsp) operations, we introduce a formal definition of local operations on plane graphs that preserve orientation-preserving symmetries, but not necessarily orientation-reversing symmetries. This operations include, e.g., the chiral Goldberg and Conway operations as well as all lsp operations. We prove the soundness of our definition as well as introduce an invariant which can be used to systematically construct all such operations. We also show sufficient conditions for an operation to preserve the connectedness of the plane graph to which it is applied.

The Worpitzky identity for the groups of signed and even-signed permutations
Published • View PublicationBIB
The well-known Worpitzky identity provides a connection between two bases of $\mathbb{Q}[x]$: The standard basis $(x+1)^n$ and the binomial basis ${{x+n-i} \choose {n}}$, where the Eulerian numbers for the Coxeter group of type $A$ (the symmetric group) serve as the entries of the transformation matrix. Brenti has generalized this identity to the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$ (signed and even-signed permutations groups, respectively) using generating function techniques. Motivated by Foata-Schützenberger and Rawlings' proof for the Worpitzky identity in the symmetric group, we provide combinatorial proofs of this identity and for their $q-$analogues in the Coxeter groups of types $B$ and $D$.

The Arithmetic of Coxeter Permutahedra
Published in Revista de la Academia Colombiana de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales 44, no. 173 (2020), 1152-1166 • View PublicationBIB
Ehrhart theory measures a polytope P discretely by counting the lattice points inside its dilates P, 2P, 3P, .... We compute the Ehrhart quasipolynomials of the standard Coxeter permutahedra for the classical Coxeter groups, expressing them in terms of the Lambert W function. A central tool is a description of the Ehrhart theory of a rational translate of an integer zonotope.

Combinatorial foundations for geometric realizations of subword complexes of Coxeter groups
Multitriangulations, and more generally subword complexes, yield a large family of simplicial complexes that are homeomorphic to spheres. Until now, all attempts to prove or disprove that they can be realized as convex polytopes faced major obstacles. In this article, we lay out the foundations of a framework -- built upon notions from algebraic combinatorics and discrete geometry -- that allows a deeper understanding of geometric realizations of subword complexes of Coxeter groups. Namely, we describe explicitly a family of chirotopes that encapsulate the necessary information to obtain geometric realizations of subword complexes. Further, we show that the space of geometric realizations of this family covers that of subword complexes, making this combinatorially defined family into a natural object to study. The family of chirotopes is described through certain parameter matrices. That is, given a finite Coxeter group, we present matrices where certain minors have prescribed signs. Parameter matrices are universal: The existence of these matrices combined with conditions in terms of Schur functions is equivalent to the realizability of all subword complexes of this Coxeter group as chirotopes. Finally, parameter matrices provide extensions of combinatorial identities; for instance, the Vandermonde determinant and the dual Cauchy identity are recovered through suitable choices of parameters.

Accurate Arrangements
Published in Adv. Math. 383, Article ID 107702, 30 p. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathscr A$ be a Coxeter arrangement of rank $\ell$. In 1987 Orlik, Solomon and Terao conjectured that for every $1\leq d \leq \ell$, the first $d$ exponents of $\mathscr A$ -- when listed in increasing order -- are realized as the exponents of a free restriction of $\mathscr A$ to some intersection of reflecting hyperplanes of $\mathscr A$ of dimension $d$. This conjecture does follow from rather extensive case-by-case studies by Orlik and Terao from 1992 and 1993, where they show that all restrictions of Coxeter arrangements are free. We call a general free arrangements with this natural property involving their free restrictions accurate. In this paper we initialize their systematic study. Our principal result shows that MAT-free arrangements, a notion recently introduced by Cuntz and Mücksch, are accurate. This theorem in turn directly implies this special property for all ideal subarrangements of Weyl arrangements. In particular, this gives a new, simpler and uniform proof of the aforementioned conjecture of Orlik, Solomon and Terao for Weyl arrangements which is free of any case-by-case considerations. Another application of a slightly more general formulation of our main theorem shows that extended Shi arrangements, extended Catalan arrangements and ideal-Shi arrangements share this property as well. We also study arrangements that satisfy a slightly weaker condition, called almost accurate arrangements, where we simply disregard the ordering of the exponents involved. This property in turn is implied by many well established concepts of freeness such as supersolvability and divisional freeness.
One-relator groups and algebras related to polyhedral products
Published in Proceedings of the Royal Society of Edinburgh: Section A Mathematics 152 (2022) 128-147 • View PublicationBIB
We link distinct concepts of geometric group theory and homotopy theory through underlying combinatorics. For a flag simplicial complex $K$, we specify a necessary and sufficient combinatorial condition for the commutator subgroup $RC_K'$ of a right-angled Coxeter group, viewed as the fundamental group of the real moment-angle complex $\mathcal{R}_K$, to be a one-relator group; and for the Pontryagin algebra $H_*(Ω\mathcal{Z}_K)$ of the moment-angle complex to be a one-relator algebra. We also give a homological characterisation of these properties. For $RC_K'$, it is given by a condition on the homology group $H_2(\mathcal{R}_K)$, whereas for $H_*(Ω\mathcal{Z}_K)$ it is stated in terms of the bigrading of the homology groups of $\mathcal{Z}_K$.
Hurwitz Actions on Reflection Factorizations in Complex Reflection Group $G_6$
Published in Rose-Hulman Undergraduate Mathematics Journal: Vol. 22 : Iss. 2 , Article 6. 2021 • Search Publication
We show that in the complex reflection group $G_6$, reflection factorizations of a Coxeter element that have the same length and multiset of conjugacy classes are in the same Hurwitz orbit. This confirms one case of a conjecture of Lewis and Reiner.

Locally spherical hypertopes from generlised cubes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that every non-degenerate regular polytope can be used to construct a thin, residually-connected, chamber-transitive incidence geometry, i.e. a regular hypertope, with a tail-triangle Coxeter diagram. We discuss several interesting examples derived when this construction is applied to generalised cubes. In particular, we produce an example of a rank $5$ finite locally spherical proper hypertope of hyperbolic type.

Classifying Regular Polyhedra and Polytopes using Wythoff's Construction
Wythoff's construction associates a uniform polytope to a Coxeter diagram whose vertices are decorated with crosses, which indicate the subgroup stabilizing a generic point. Champagne, Kjiri, Patera, and Sharp remarked that by associating more information to a Coxeter diagram, one can furthermore determine the types and number of faces of such a polytope. This article provides a proof of this result, and uses it to provide a classification of the regular polytopes.

Interval structures in the Bruhat and weak orders
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the appearance of notable interval structures -- lattices, modular lattices, distributive lattices, and boolean lattices -- in both the Bruhat and weak orders of Coxeter groups. We collect and expand upon known results for principal order ideals, including pattern characterizations and enumerations for the symmetric group. This segues naturally into a similar analysis for arbitrary intervals, although the results are less characterizing for the Bruhat order at this generality. In counterpoint, however, we obtain a full characterization for intervals starting at rank one in the symmetric group, for each of the four structure types, in each of the two posets. Each category can be enumerated, with intriguing connections to Fibonacci and Catalan numbers. We conclude with suggestions for further directions and questions, including an interesting analysis of the intervals formed between a permutation and each generator in its support.

Parametrization, structure and Bruhat order of certain spherical quotients
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a reductive algebraic group and let $Z$ be the stabilizer of a nilpotent element $e$ of the Lie algebra of $G$. We consider the action of $Z$ on the flag variety of $G$, and we focus on the case where this action has a finite number of orbits (i.e., $Z$ is a spherical subgroup). This holds for instance if $e$ has height $2$. In this case we give a parametrization of the $Z$-orbits and we show that each $Z$-orbit has a structure of algebraic affine bundle. In particular, in type $A$, we deduce that each orbit has a natural cell decomposition. In the aim to study the (strong) Bruhat order of the orbits, we define an abstract partial order on certain quotients associated to a Coxeter system. In type $A$, we show that the Bruhat order of the $Z$-orbits can be described in this way.

Toric heaps, cyclic reducibility, and conjugacy in Coxeter groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
As a visualization of Cartier and Foata's "partially commutative monoid" theory, G.X. Viennot introduced "heaps of pieces" in 1986. These are essentially labeled posets satisfying a few additional properties. They naturally arise as models of reduced words in Coxeter groups. In this paper, we introduce a cyclic version, motivated by the idea of taking a heap and wrapping it into a cylinder. We call this object a "toric heap", as we formalize it as a labeled toric poset, which is a cyclic version of an ordinary poset. To define the concept of a toric extension, we develop a morphism in the category of toric heaps. We study toric heaps in Coxeter theory, in view of the fact that a cyclic shift of a reduced word is simply a conjugate by an initial or terminal generator. This allows us to formalize and study a framework of "cyclic reducibility" in Coxeter theory, and apply it to model conjugacy. We introduce the notion of "torically reduced", which is stronger than being cyclically reduced for group elements. This gives rise to a new class of elements called "torically fully commutative" (TFC), which are those that have a unique cyclic commutativity class, and comprise a strictly bigger class than the "cyclically fully commutative" (CFC) elements. We prove several cyclic analogues of results on fully commutative (FC) elements due to Stembridge. We conclude with how this framework fits into recent work in Coxeter groups, and we correct a minor flaw in a few recently published theorems.
