Promotion and cyclic sieving on families of SSYT
Published in Ark. Mat., 59 (2021), 247-274 • View PublicationBIB
We examine a few families of semistandard Young tableaux, for which we observe the cyclic sieving phenomenon under promotion. The first family we consider consists of stretched hook shapes, where we use the cocharge generating polynomial as CSP-polynomial. The second family we consider consists of skew shapes, consisting of rectangles. Again, the charge generating polynomial together with promotion exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon. This generalizes earlier result by B. Rhoades and later B. Fontaine and J. Kamnitzer. Finally, we consider certain skew ribbons, where promotion behaves in a predictable manner. This result is stated in form of a bicyclic sieving phenomenon. One of the tools we use is a novel method for computing charge of skew semistandard tableaux, in the case when every number in the tableau occur with the same frequency.
Cyclic Sieving for Cyclic Codes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Prompted by a question of Jim Propp, this paper examines the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) in certain cyclic codes. For example, it is shown that, among dual Hamming codes over $F_q$, the generating function for codedwords according to the major index statistic (resp. the inversion statistic) gives rise to a CSP when $q=2$ or $q=3$ (resp. when $q=2$). A byproduct is a curious characterization of the irreducible polynomials in $F_2[x]$ and $F_3[x]$ that are primitive.
Skew characters and cyclic sieving
Published in Forum of Mathematics, Sigma , Volume 9 , 2021 , e41 • View PublicationBIB
In 2010, B. Rhoades proved that promotion together with the fake-degree polynomial associated with rectangular standard Young tableaux give an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon. We extend this result to all skew standard Young tableaux where the fake-degree polynomial evaluates to nonnegative integers at roots of unity, albeit without being able to specify an explicit group action. Put differently, we determine in which cases a skew character of the symmetric group carries a permutation representation of the cyclic group. We use a method proposed by N. Amini and the first author, which amounts to establishing a bound on the number of border-strip tableaux of skew shape. Finally, we apply our results to the invariant theory of tensor powers of the adjoint representation of the general linear group. In particular, we prove the existence of a bijection between permutations and J. Stembridge's alternating tableaux, which intertwines rotation and promotion.

Birational and noncommutative lifts of antichain toggling and rowmotion
Published • View PublicationBIB
The rowmotion action on order ideals or on antichains of a finite partially ordered set has been studied (under a variety of names) by many authors. Depending on the poset, one finds unexpectedly interesting orbit structures, instances of (small order) periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy. Many of these nice features still hold when the action is extended to $[0,1]$-labelings of the poset or (via detropicalization) to labelings by rational functions (the birational setting). In this work, we parallel the birational lifting already done for order-ideal rowmotion to antichain rowmotion. We give explicit equivariant bijections between the birational toggle groups and between their respective liftings. We further extend all of these notions to labellings by noncommutative rational functions, setting an unpublished periodicity conjecture of Grinberg in a broader context.

Cyclic sieving phenomenon on dominant maximal weights over affine Kac-Moody algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a (bi)cyclic sieving phenomenon on the union of dominant maximal weights for level $\ell$ highest weight modules over an affine Kac-Moody algebra with exactly one highest weight being taken for each equivalence class, in a way not depending on types, ranks and levels. In order to do that, we introduce $\textbf{\textit{S}}$-evaluation on the set of dominant maximal weights for each highest modules, and generalize Sagan's action by considering the datum on each affine Kac-Moody algebra. As consequences, we obtain closed and recursive formulae for cardinality of the number of dominant maximal weights for every highest weight module and observe level-rank duality on the cardinalities.

Cyclic sieving, skew Macdonald polynomials and Schur positivity
Published in Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 3 (2020) no. 4, pp. 913-939 • View PublicationBIB
When $λ$ is a partition, the specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomial $E_λ(x;q;0)$ is symmetric and related to a modified Hall--Littlewood polynomial. We show that whenever all parts of the integer partition $λ$ is a multiple of $n$, the underlying set of fillings exhibit the cyclic sieving phenomenon (CSP) under a cyclic shift of the columns. The corresponding CSP polynomial is given by $E_λ(x;q;0)$. In addition, we prove a refined cyclic sieving phenomenon where the content of the fillings is fixed. This refinement is closely related to an earlier result by B.~Rhoades. We also introduce a skew version of $E_λ(x;q;0)$. We show that these are symmetric and Schur-positive via a variant of the Robinson--Schenstedt--Knuth correspondence and we also describe crystal raising- and lowering operators for the underlying fillings. Moreover, we show that the skew specialized non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials are in some cases vertical-strip LLT polynomials. As a consequence, we get a combinatorial Schur expansion of a new family of LLT polynomials.

Cyclic Sieving for Plane Partitions and Symmetry
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 130, 40 pages • View PublicationBIB
The cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White says that we can often count the fixed points of elements of a cyclic group acting on a combinatorial set by plugging roots of unity into a polynomial related to this set. One of the most impressive instances of the cyclic sieving phenomenon is a theorem of Rhoades asserting that the set of plane partitions in a rectangular box under the action of promotion exhibits cyclic sieving. In Rhoades's result the sieving polynomial is the size generating function for these plane partitions, which has a well-known product formula due to MacMahon. We extend Rhoades's result by also considering symmetries of plane partitions: specifically, complementation and transposition. The relevant polynomial here is the size generating function for symmetric plane partitions, whose product formula was conjectured by MacMahon and proved by Andrews and Macdonald. Finally, we explain how these symmetry results also apply to the rowmotion operator on plane partitions, which is closely related to promotion.

Tableau Stabilization and Rectangular Tableaux Fixed by Promotion Powers
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce tableau stabilization, a new phenomenon and statistic on Young tableaux based on jeu de taquin. We investigate bounds for tableau stabilization, the shape of stabilized tableaux, and tableau stabilization as a permutation statistic. We apply tableau stabilization to construct the sufficiently large rectangular tableaux fixed by powers of promotion, which were counted by Brendon Rhoades via the cyclic sieving phenomenon

In this note, we provide a short proof of Theorem 3.3 in the paper titled \emph{Crystals, semistandard tableaux and cyclic sieving phenomenon}, by Y.-T.~Oh and E.~Park, which concerns a cyclic sieving phenomenon on semi-standard Young tableaux. We also extend the result to skew shapes.

Crystals, semistandard tableaux and cyclic sieving phenomenon
In this paper, we study a new cyclic sieving phenomenon on the set $\mathsf{SST}_n(λ)$ of semistandard Young tableaux with the cyclic action $\mathsf{c}$ arising from its $U_q(\mathfrak{sl}_n)$-crystal structure. We prove that if $λ$ is a Young diagram with $\ell(λ) < n$ and $\gcd( n, |λ| )=1$, then the triple $\left( \mathsf{SST}_n(λ), \mathsf{C}, q^{- κ(λ)} s_λ(1,q, \ldots, q^{n-1}) \right) $ exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon, where $\mathsf{C}$ is the cyclic group generated by $\mathsf{c}$. We further investigate a connection between $\mathsf{c}$ and the promotion $\mathsf{pr}$ and show the bicyclic sieving phenomenon given by $\mathsf{c}$ and $\mathsf{pr}^n$ for hook shape.

The cyclic sieving phenomenon on circular Dyck paths
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics 26, No.4 (2019) • View PublicationBIB
We give a $q$-enumeration of circular Dyck paths, which is a superset of the classical Dyck paths enumerated by the Catalan numbers. These objects have recently been studied by Alexandersson and Panova. Furthermore, we show that this $q$-analogue exhibits the cyclic sieving phenomenon under a natural action of the cyclic group. The enumeration and cyclic sieving is generalized to Möbius paths. We also discuss properties of a generalization of cyclic sieving, which we call subset cyclic sieving. Finally, we also introduce the notion of Lyndon-like cyclic sieving that concerns special recursive properties of combinatorial objects exhibiting the cyclic sieving phenomenon.

Parity-Unimodality and a Cyclic Sieving Phenomenon for Necklaces
We discuss two surprising properties of a family of polynomials that generalize the Mahonian $q$-Catalan polynomials, and more generally the $q$-Schröder polynomials. By interpreting them as $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-characters, we show that the rational $q$-Schröder polynomials are parity-unimodal, which means that the even- and odd-degree coefficients are separately unimodal. Second, we show that they exhibit a $q=-1$ phenomenon. This is a special case of a more general cyclic sieving phenomenon for certain transitive $S_n$-actions, deduced from Molien's formula.

Cyclic sieving, necklaces, and branching rules related to Thrall's problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that the cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner--Stanton--White together with necklace generating functions arising from work of Klyachko offer a remarkably unified, direct, and largely bijective approach to a series of results due to Kraskiewicz--Weyman, Stembridge, and Schocker related to the so-called higher Lie modules and branching rules for inclusions $ C_a \wr S_b \hookrightarrow S_{ab} $. Extending the approach gives monomial expansions for certain graded Frobenius series arising from a generalization of Thrall's problem.

q-Congruences, with applications to supercongruences and the cyclic sieving phenomenon
Published in Int. J. Number Theory 15 (2019), no. 9, 1919-1968 • View PublicationBIB
We establish a supercongruence conjectured by Almkvist and Zudilin, by proving a corresponding $q$-supercongruence. Similar $q$-supercongruences are established for binomial coefficients and the Apéry numbers, by means of a general criterion involving higher derivatives at roots of unity. Our methods lead us to discover new examples of the cyclic sieving phenomenon, involving the $q$-Lucas numbers.

The Cone of Cyclic Sieving Phenomena
Published in Discrete Mathematics, Volume 342, Issue 6, June 2019, Pages 1581-1601 • View PublicationBIB
We study cyclic sieving phenomena (CSP) on combinatorial objects from an abstract point of view by considering a rational polyhedral cone determined by the linear equations that define such phenomena. Each lattice point in the cone corresponds to a non-negative integer matrix which jointly records the statistic and cyclic order distribution associated with the set of objects realizing the CSP. In particular we consider a universal subcone onto which every CSP matrix linearly projects such that the projection realizes a CSP with the same cyclic orbit structure, but via a universal statistic that has even distribution on the orbits. Reiner et.al. showed that every cyclic action give rise to a unique polynomial (mod $q^n-1$) complementing the action to a CSP. We give a necessary and sufficient criterion for the converse to hold. This characterization allows one to determine if a combinatorial set with a statistic give rise (in principle) to a CSP without having a combinatorial realization of the cyclic action. We apply the criterion to conjecture a new CSP involving stretched Schur polynomials and prove our conjecture for certain rectangular tableaux. Finally we study some geometric properties of the CSP cone. We explicitly determine its half-space description and in the prime order case we determine its extreme rays.

The sieving phenomenon for finite groups
The cyclic sieving phenomenon is a well-studied occurrence in combinatorics appearing when a cyclic group acts on a finite set. In this paper, we demonstrate a natural extension of this theory to finite abelian groups. We also present a similar result for dihedral groups and suggest approaches for natural generalizations to nonabelian groups.

Cyclic Sieving and Cluster Duality of Grassmannian
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 067, 41 pages • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a decorated configuration space $\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a)$ with a potential function $\mathcal{W}$. We prove the cluster duality conjecture of Fock-Goncharov for Grassmannians, that is, the tropicalization of $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ canonically parametrizes a linear basis of the homogeneous coordinate ring of the Grassmannian $\operatorname{Gr}_a(n)$ with respect to the Plücker embedding. We prove that $\big(\mathscr{C}\!{\rm onf}_n^\times(a), \mathcal{W}\big)$ is equivalent to the mirror Landau-Ginzburg model of the Grassmannian considered by Eguchi-Hori-Xiong, Marsh-Rietsch and Rietsch-Williams. As an application, we show a cyclic sieving phenomenon involving plane partitions under a sequence of piecewise-linear toggles.

Enumeration on row-increasing tableaux of shape $2 \times n$

Recently O. Pechenik studied the cyclic sieving of increasing tableaux of shape $2\times n$, and obtained a polynomial on the major index of these tableaux, which is a $q$-analogue of refined small Schröder numbers. We define row-increasing tableaux and study the major index and amajor index of row-increasing tableaux of shape $2 \times n$. The resulting polynomials are both $q$-analogues of refined large Schröder numbers. For both results we give bijective proofs.

Paths to Understanding Birational Rowmotion on Products of Two Chains
Published • View PublicationBIB
Birational rowmotion is an action on the space of assignments of rational functions to the elements of a finite partially-ordered set (poset). It is lifted from the well-studied rowmotion map on order ideals (equivariantly on antichains) of a poset $P$, which when iterated on special posets, has unexpectedly nice properties in terms of periodicity, cyclic sieving, and homomesy (statistics whose averages over each orbit are constant) [AST11, BW74, CF95, Pan09, PR13, RuSh12,RuWa15+,SW12, ThWi17, Yil17. In this context, rowmotion appears to be related to Auslander-Reiten translation on certain quivers, and birational rowmotion to $Y$-systems of type $A_m \times A_n$ described in Zamolodchikov periodicity. We give a formula in terms of families of non-intersecting lattice paths for iterated actions of the birational rowmotion map on a product of two chains. This allows us to give a much simpler direct proof of the key fact that the period of this map on a product of chains of lengths $r$ and $s$ is $r+s+2$ (first proved by D.~Grinberg and the second author), as well as the first proof of the birational analogue of homomesy along files for such posets.

Orbits of Plane Partitions of Exceptional Lie Type
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics 74, 2018, 90-109 • View PublicationBIB
For each minuscule flag variety $X$, there is a corresponding minuscule poset, describing its Schubert decomposition. We study an action on plane partitions over such posets, introduced by P. Cameron and D. Fon-der-Flaass (1995). For plane partitions of height at most $2$, D. Rush and X. Shi (2013) proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon, completely describing the orbit structure of this action. They noted their result does not extend to greater heights in general; however, when $X$ is one of the two minuscule flag varieties of exceptional Lie type $E$, they conjectured explicit instances of cyclic sieving for all heights. We prove their conjecture in the case that $X$ is the Cayley-Moufang plane of type $E_6$. For the other exceptional minuscule flag variety, the Freudenthal variety of type $E_7$, we establish their conjecture for heights at most $4$, but show that it fails generally. We further give a new proof of an unpublished cyclic sieving of D. Rush and X. Shi (2011) for plane partitions of any height in the case $X$ is an even-dimensional quadric hypersurface. Our argument uses ideas of K. Dilks, O. Pechenik, and J. Striker (2017) to relate the action on plane partitions to combinatorics derived from $K$-theoretic Schubert calculus.
