We consider the Ehrhart $h^*$-vector for the hypersimplex. It is well-known that the sum of the $h_i^*$ is the normalized volume which equals an Eulerian numbers. The main result is a proof of a conjecture by R. Stanley which gives an interpretation of the $h^*_i$ coefficients in terms of descents and excedances. Our proof is geometric using a careful book-keeping of a shelling of a unimodular triangulation. We generalize this result to other closely related polytopes.
Mesh patterns and the expansion of permutation statistics as sums of permutation patterns

Any permutation statistic $f:\sym\to\CC$ may be represented uniquely as a, possibly infinite, linear combination of (classical) permutation patterns: $f= Σ_τλ_f(τ)τ$. To provide explicit expansions for certain statistics, we introduce a new type of permutation patterns that we call mesh patterns. Intuitively, an occurrence of the mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$ is an occurrence of the permutation pattern $π$ with additional restrictions specified by $R$ on the relative position of the entries of the occurrence. We show that, for any mesh pattern $p=(π,R)$, we have $λ_p(τ) = (-1)^{|τ|-|π|}p^{\star}(τ)$ where $p^{\star}=(π,R^c)$ is the mesh pattern with the same underlying permutation as $p$ but with complementary restrictions. We use this result to expand some well known permutation statistics, such as the number of left-to-right maxima, descents, excedances, fixed points, strong fixed points, and the major index. We also show that alternating permutations, André permutations of the first kind and simsun permutations occur naturally as permutations avoiding certain mesh patterns. Finally, we provide new natural Mahonian statistics.
On Two Bijections from S_n(321) to S_n(132)
Let S_n(321) (respectively, S_n(132)) denote the set of all permutations of {1,2,...,n} that avoid the pattern 321 (respectively, the pattern 132). Elizalde and Pak gave a bijection Theta from S_n(321) to S_n(132) that preserves the numbers of fixed points and excedances for each element of S_n(321), and commutes with the operation of taking inverses. Bloom and Saracino proved that another bijection Gamma from S_n(321) to S_n(132), introduced by Robertson, has the same properties, and they later gave a pictorial reformulation of Gamma that made these results more transparent. Here we give a pictorial reformulation of Theta, from which it follows that, although the original definitions of Theta and Gamma are very different, these two bijections are in fact related to each other in a very simple way, by using inversion, reversal, and complementation.
The symmetric and unimodal expansion of Eulerian polynomials via continued fractions

This paper was motivated by a conjecture of Brändén (European J. Combin. \textbf{29} (2008), no.~2, 514--531) about the divisibility of the coefficients in an expansion of generalized Eulerian polynomials, which implies the symmetric and unimodal property of the Eulerian numbers. We show that such a formula with the conjectured property can be derived from the combinatorial theory of continued fractions. We also discuss an analogous expansion for the corresponding formula for derangements and prove a $(p,q)$-analogue of the fact that the (-1)-evaluation of the enumerator polynomials of permutations (resp. derangements) by the number of excedances gives rise to tangent numbers (resp. secant numbers). The $(p,q)$-analogue unifies and generalizes our recent results (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1689--1705.) and that of Josuat-Vergès (European J. Combin. \textbf{31} (2010), no.~7, 1892--1906).

It is well known that the $(-1)$-evaluation of the enumerator polynomials of permutations (resp. derangements) by the number of excedances gives rise to tangent numbers (resp. secant numbers). Recently, two distinct $q$-analogues of the latter result have been discovered by Foata and Han, and Josuat-Vergès, respectively. In this paper, we will prove some general continued fractions expansions formulae, which permits us to give a unified treatment of Josuat-Vergès' two formulae and also to derive a new $q$-analogue of the aforementioned formulae. Our approach is based on a $(p,q)$-analogue of tangent and secant numbers via continued fractions and also the generating function of permutations with respect to the quintuple statistic consisting of fixed point number, weak excedance number, crossing number, nesting number and inversion number. We also give a combinatorial proof of Josuat-Vergès' formulae by using a new linear model of derangements.

It is shown that a refined version of a q-analogue of the Eulerian numbers together with the action, by conjugation, of the subgroup of the symmetric group $S_n$ generated by the $n$-cycle $(1,2,...,n)$ on the set of permutations of fixed cycle type and fixed number of excedances provides an instance of the cyclic sieving phenonmenon of Reiner, Stanton and White. The main tool is a class of symmetric functions recently introduced in work of two of the authors.
A new explicit formula for Kerov polynomials

We prove a formula expressing the Kerov polynomial $Σ_k$ as a weighted sum over the lattice of noncrossing partitions of the set $\{1,...,k+1\}$. In particular, such a formula is related to a partial order $\mirr$ on the Lehner's irreducible noncrossing partitions which can be described in terms of left-to-right minima and maxima, descents and excedances of permutations. This provides a translation of the formula in terms of the Cayley graph of the symmetric group $\frak{S}_k$ and allows us to recover the coefficients of $Σ_k$ by means of the posets $P_k$ and $Q_k$ of pattern-avoiding permutations discovered by Bóna and Simion. We also obtain symmetric functions specializing in the coefficients of $Σ_k$.

We present a bijection between cyclic permutations of {1,2,...,n+1} and permutations of {1,2,...,n} that preserves the descent set of the first n entries and the set of weak excedances. This non-trivial bijection involves a Foata-like transformation on the cyclic notation of the permutation, followed by certain conjugations. We also give an alternate derivation of the consequent result about the equidistribution of descent sets using work of Gessel and Reutenauer. Finally, we prove a conjecture of the author in [SIAM J. Discrete Math. 23 (2009), 765-786] and a conjecture of Eriksen, Freij and Wästlund.

We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which specialize to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. Our central result is a formula for the generating function for the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions, which specializes to a new and surprising $q$-analog of a classical formula of Euler for the exponential generating function of the Eulerian polynomials. This $q$-analog computes the joint distribution of excedance number and major index, the only of the four important Euler-Mahonian distributions that had not yet been computed. Our study of the Eulerian quasisymmetric functions also yields results that include the descent statistic and refine results of Gessel and Reutenauer. We also obtain $q$-analogs, $(q,p)$-analogs and quasisymmetric function analogs of classical results on the symmetry and unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts including MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes, Stanley's work on chromatic symmetric functions, and the work of the authors on the homology of a certain poset introduced by Björner and Welker.

Adopting the definition of excedances of type B due to Brenti, we give a type B analogue of the q-derangement polynomials. The connection between q-derangement polynomials and Eulerian polynomials naturally extends to the type B case. Based on this relation, we derive some basic properties of the q-derangement polynomials of type B, including the generating function formula, the Sturm sequence property, and the asymptotic normal distribution. We also show that the q-derangement polynomials are almost symmetric in the sense that the coefficients possess the spiral property.
On the excedance sets of colored permutations
We define the excedence set and the excedance word on $G_{r,n}$, generalizing a work of Ehrenborg and Steingrimsson and use the inclusion-exclusion principle to calculate the number of colored permutations having a prescribed excedance word. We show some symmetric properties as Log concavity and unimodality of a specific sequence of excedance words.
Eulerian quasisymmetric functions and poset topology
We introduce a family of quasisymmetric functions called {\em Eulerian quasisymmetric functions}, which have the property of specializing to enumerators for the joint distribution of the permutation statistics, major index and excedance number on permutations of fixed cycle type. This family is analogous to a family of quasisymmetric functions that Gessel and Reutenauer used to study the joint distribution of major index and descent number on permutations of fixed cycle type. We also obtain $q$-analogs, $(q,p)$-analogs and quasisymmetric function analogs of classical results on the symmetry and unimodality of the Eulerian polynomials. Our Eulerian quasisymmetric functions refine symmetric functions that have occurred in various representation theoretic and enumerative contexts such as in MacMahon's study of multiset derangements, in work of Procesi and Stanley on toric varieties of Coxeter complexes and in Stanley's work on symmetric chromatic polynomials. Here we present yet another occurence in connection with the homology of a poset introduced by Björner and Welker.

We introduce a new family of noncommutative analogues of the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions. Our construction relies upon Tevlin's bases and simple q-deformations of the classical combinatorial Hopf algebras. We connect our new Hall-Littlewood functions to permutation tableaux, and also give an exact formula for the q-enumeration of permutation tableaux of a fixed shape. This gives an explicit formula for: the steady state probability of each state in the partially asymmetric exclusion process (PASEP); the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of weak excedances according to crossings; the polynomial enumerating permutations with a fixed set of descent bottoms according to occurrences of the generalized pattern 2-31.

In this paper we give a bijection between the class of permutations that can be drawn on an X-shape and a certain set of permutations that appears in [Knuth] in connection to sorting algorithms. A natural generalization of this set leads us to the definition of almost-increasing permutations, which is a one-parameter family of permutations that can be characterized in terms of forbidden patterns. We find generating functions for almost-increasing permutations by using their cycle structure to map them to colored Motzkin paths. We also give refined enumerations with respect to the number of cycles, fixed points, excedances, and inversions.

We define a class of bipartite graphs that correspond naturally with Ferrers diagrams. We give expressions for the number of spanning trees, the number of Hamiltonian paths when applicable, the chromatic polynomial, and the chromatic symmetric function. We show that the linear coefficient of the chromatic polynomial is given by the excedance set statistic.

We extend Stanley's work on alternating permutations with extremal number of fixed points in two directions: first, alternating permutations are replaced by permutations with a prescribed descent set; second, instead of simply counting permutations we study their generating polynomials by number of excedances. Several techniques are used: Desarmenien's desarrangement combinatorics, Gessel's hook-factorization and the analytical properties of two new permutation statistics "DEZ" and "lec". Explicit formulas for the maximal case are derived by using symmetric function tools.
Excedance numbers for permutations in complex reflection groups
Recently, Bagno, Garber and Mansour studied a kind of excedance number on the complex reflection groups and computed its multidistribution with the number of fixed points on the set of involutions in these groups. In this note, we consider the similar problems in more general cases and make a correction of one result obtained by them.

A four-variable distribution on permutations is derived, with two dual combinatorial interpretations. The first one includes the number of fixed points "fix", the second the so-called "pix" statistic. This shows that the duality between derangements and desarrangements can be extended to the case of multivariable statistics. Several specializations are obtained, including the joint distribution of (des, exc), where "des" and "exc" stand for the number of descents and excedances, respectively.

We construct two bijections of the symmetric group S_n onto itself that enable us to show that three new three-variable statistics are equidistributed with classical statistics involving the number of fixed points. The first one is equidistributed with the triplet (fix, des, maj), the last two with (fix, exc, maj), where "fix," "des," "exc" and "maj" denote the number of fixed points, the number of descents, the number of excedances and the major index, respectively.

The excedance number for S_n is known to have an Eulerian distribution. Nevertheless, the classical proof uses descents rather than excedances. We present a direct recursive proof which seems to be folklore and extend it to the colored permutation groups G_r,n. The generalized recursion yields some interesting connection to Stirling numbers of the second kind. We also show some logconcavity result concerning a variant of the excedance number. Finally, we show that the generating function of the excedance number defined on G_r,n is symmetric.
