In a series of previous papers, we studied sortable elements in finite Coxeter groups, and the related Cambrian fans. We applied sortable elements and Cambrian fans to the study of cluster algebras of finite type and the noncrossing partitions associated to Artin groups of finite type. In this paper, as the first step towards expanding these applications beyond finite type, we study sortable elements in a general Coxeter group W. We supply uniform arguments which transform all previous finite-type proofs into uniform proofs (rather than type by type proofs), generalize many of the finite-type results and prove new and more refined results. The key tools in our proofs include a skew-symmetric form related to (a generalization of) the Euler form of quiver theory and the projection \pidown^c mapping each element of W to the unique maximal c-sortable element below it in the weak order. The fibers of \pidown^c essentially define the c-Cambrian fan. The most fundamental results are, first, a precise statement of how sortable elements transform under (BGP) reflection functors and second, a precise description of the fibers of \pidown^c. These fundamental results and others lead to further results on the lattice theory and geometry of Cambrian (semi)lattices and Cambrian fans.

Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We define its Hecke-group algebra by gluing together appropriately its group algebra and its 0-Hecke algebra. We describe in detail this algebra (dimension, several bases, conjectural presentation, combinatorial construction of simple and indecomposable projective modules, Cartan map) and give several alternative equivalent definitions (as symmetry preserving operator algebra, as poset algebra, as commutant algebra, ...).
In type A, the Hecke-group algebra can be described as the algebra generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. It turns out to be closely related to the monoid algebras of respectively nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions, the representation theory of which we describe as well.
This defines three towers of algebras, and we give explicitly the Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by their induction products and their restriction coproducts. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.
Cells and Constructible Representations in type B
We examine the partition of a finite Coxeter group of type $B$ into cells determined by a weight function $L$. The main objective of these notes is to reconcile Lusztig's description of constructible representations in this setting with conjectured combinatorial descriptions of cells.

The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game and its interactions with Coxeter/Weyl group theory and Lie theory have been studied by many authors. In particular, Eriksson connects certain geometric representations of Coxeter groups with games on graphs with certain real number amplitudes. Games played on such graphs are ``E-games.'' Here we investigate various finiteness aspects of E-game play: We extend Eriksson's work relating moves of the game to reduced decompositions of elements of a Coxeter group naturally associated to the game graph. We use Stembridge's theory of fully commutative Coxeter group elements to classify what we call here the ``adjacency-free'' initial positions for finite E-games. We characterize when the positive roots for certain geometric representations of finite Coxeter groups can be obtained from E-game play. Finally, we provide a new Dynkin diagram classification result of E-game graphs meeting a certain finiteness requirement.

Given a finite Coxeter system $(W,S)$ and a Coxeter element $c$, we construct a simple polytope whose outer normal fan is N. Reading's Cambrian fan $F_c$, settling a conjecture of Reading that this is possible. We call this polytope the $c$-generalized associahedron. Our approach generalizes Loday's realization of the associahedron (a type $A$ $c$-generalized associahedron whose outer normal fan is not the cluster fan but a coarsening of the Coxeter fan arising from the Tamari lattice) to any finite Coxeter group. A crucial role in the construction is played by the $c$-singleton cones, the cones in the $c$-Cambrian fan which consist of a single maximal cone from the Coxeter fan.
Moreover, if $W$ is a Weyl group and the vertices of the permutahedron are chosen in a lattice associated to $W$, then we show that our realizations have integer coordinates in this lattice.
A Quiver Presentation for Solomon's Descent Algebra

The descent algebra $Σ(W)$ is a subalgebra of the group algebra $\Q W$ of a finite Coxeter group $W$, which supports a homomorphism with nilpotent kernel and commutative image in the character ring of $W$. Thus $Σ(W)$ is a basic algebra, and as such it has a presentation as a quiver with relations. Here we construct $Σ(W)$ as a quotient of a subalgebra of the path algebra of the Hasse diagram of the Boolean lattice of all subsets of $S$, the set of simple reflections in $W$. From this construction we obtain some general information about the quiver of $Σ(W)$ and an algorithm for the construction of a quiver presentation for the descent algebra $Σ(W)$ of any given finite Coxeter group $W$.

We study the quiver of the descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group W. The results include a derivation of the quiver of the descent algebra of types A and B. Our approach is to study the descent algebra as an algebra constructed from the reflection arrangement associated to W.
The Loewy length of the descent algebra of type D

The Loewy length of the descent algebra of type D_{2m+1} is shown to be m+2, for m \geq 2, by providing an upper bound that agrees with the lower bound in \cite{BonnafePfeiffer2006}. The bound is obtained by showing that the length of the longest path in the quiver of the descent algebra of D_{2m+1} is at most m+1. To achieve this bound, the geometric approach to the descent algebra is used, in which the descent algebra of a finite Coxeter group is identified with an algebra associated to the reflection arrangement of the group.

We establish recursions counting various classes of chains in the noncrossing partition lattice of a finite Coxeter group. The recursions specialize a general relation which is proven uniformly (i.e. without appealing to the classification of finite Coxeter groups) using basic facts about noncrossing partitions. We solve these recursions for each finite Coxeter group in the classification. Among other results, we obtain a simpler proof of a known uniform formula for the number of maximal chains of noncrossing partitions and a new uniform formula for the number of edges in the noncrossing partition lattice. All of our results extend to the m-divisible noncrossing partition lattice.

Given a finite irreducible Coxeter group $W$, a positive integer $d$, and types $T_1,T_2,...,T_d$ (in the sense of the classification of finite Coxeter groups), we compute the number of decompositions $c=\si_1\si_2 cdots\si_d$ of a Coxeter element $c$ of $W$, such that $\si_i$ is a Coxeter element in a subgroup of type $T_i$ in $W$, $i=1,2,...,d$, and such that the factorisation is "minimal" in the sense that the sum of the ranks of the $T_i$'s, $i=1,2,...,d$, equals the rank of $W$. For the exceptional types, these decomposition numbers have been computed by the first author. The type $A_n$ decomposition numbers have been computed by Goulden and Jackson, albeit using a somewhat different language. We explain how to extract the type $B_n$ decomposition numbers from results of Bóna, Bousquet, Labelle and Leroux on map enumeration. Our formula for the type $D_n$ decomposition numbers is new. These results are then used to determine, for a fixed positive integer $l$ and fixed integers $r_1\le r_2\le ...\le r_l$, the number of multi-chains $π_1\le π_2\le ...\le π_l$ in Armstrong's generalised non-crossing partitions poset, where the poset rank of $π_i$ equals $r_i$, and where the "block structure" of $π_1$ is prescribed. We demonstrate that this result implies all known enumerative results on ordinary and generalised non-crossing partitions via appropriate summations. Surprisingly, this result on multi-chain enumeration is new even for the original non-crossing partitions of Kreweras. Moreover, the result allows one to solve the problem of rank-selected chain enumeration in the type $D_n$ generalised non-crossing partitions poset, which, in turn, leads to a proof of Armstrong's $F=M$ Conjecture in type $D_n$.
Noncrossing partitions and representations of quivers

We situate the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group within the context of the representation theory of quivers. We describe Reading's bijection between noncrossing partitions and clusters in this context, and show that it extends to the extended Dynkin case. Our setup also yields a new proof that the noncrossing partitions associated to a finite Coxeter group form a lattice.
We also prove some new results within the theory of quiver representations. We show that the finitely generated, exact abelian, and extension-closed subcategories of the representations of a quiver $Q$ without oriented cycles are in natural bijection with the cluster-tilting objects in the associated cluster category. We also show these subcategories are exactly the finitely generated categories that can be obtained as the semistable objects with respect to some stability condition.

We study the rational cohomology groups of the real De Concini-Procesi model corresponding to a finite Coxeter group, generalizing the type-A case of the moduli space of stable genus 0 curves with marked points. We compute the Betti numbers in the exceptional types, and give formulae for them in types B and D. We give a generating-function formula for the characters of the representations of a Coxeter group of type B on the rational cohomology groups of the corresponding real De Concini-Procesi model, and deduce the multiplicities of one-dimensional characters in the representations, and a formula for the Euler character. We also give a moduli space interpretation of this type-B variety, and hence show that the action of the Coxeter group extends to a slightly larger group.

This memoir constitutes the author's PhD thesis at Cornell University. It serves both as an expository work and as a description of new research. At the heart of the memoir, we introduce and study a poset $NC^{(k)}(W)$ for each finite Coxeter group $W$ and for each positive integer $k$. When $k=1$, our definition coincides with the generalized noncrossing partitions introduced by Brady-Watt and Bessis. When $W$ is the symmetric group, we obtain the poset of classical $k$-divisible noncrossing partitions, first studied by Edelman.
Along the way, we include a comprehensive introduction to related background material. Before defining our generalization $NC^{(k)}(W)$, we develop from scratch the theory of algebraic noncrossing partitions $NC(W)$. This involves studying a finite Coxeter group $W$ with respect to its generating set $T$ of {\em all} reflections, instead of the usual Coxeter generating set $S$. This is the first time that this material has appeared in one place.
Finally, it turns out that our poset $NC^{(k)}(W)$ shares many enumerative features in common with the ``generalized nonnesting partitions'' of Athanasiadis and the ``generalized cluster complexes'' of Fomin and Reading. In particular, there is a generalized ``Fuss-Catalan number'', with a nice closed formula in terms of the invariant degrees of $W$, that plays an important role in each case. We give a basic introduction to these topics, and we describe several conjectures relating these three families of ``Fuss-Catalan objects''.
Cambrian fans

For a finite Coxeter group W and a Coxeter element c of W, the c-Cambrian fan is a coarsening of the fan defined by the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Its maximal cones are naturally indexed by the c-sortable elements of W. The main result of this paper is that the known bijection cl_c between c-sortable elements and c-clusters induces a combinatorial isomorphism of fans. In particular, the c-Cambrian fan is combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fan of the generalized associahedron for W. The rays of the c-Cambrian fan are generated by certain vectors in the W-orbit of the fundamental weights, while the rays of the c-cluster fan are generated by certain roots. For particular ("bipartite") choices of c, we show that the c-Cambrian fan is linearly isomorphic to the c-cluster fan. We characterize, in terms of the combinatorics of clusters, the partial order induced, via the map cl_c, on c-clusters by the c-Cambrian lattice. We give a simple bijection from c-clusters to c-noncrossing partitions that respects the refined (Narayana) enumeration. We relate the Cambrian fan to well known objects in the theory of cluster algebras, providing a geometric context for g-vectors and quasi-Cartan companions.

We show that the Coxeter-sortable elements in a finite Coxeter group W are the minimal congruence-class representatives of a lattice congruence of the weak order on W. We identify this congruence as the Cambrian congruence on W, so that the Cambrian lattice is the weak order on Coxeter-sortable elements. These results exhibit W-Catalan combinatorics arising in the context of the lattice theory of the weak order on W.
A note on Bruhat order and double coset representatives
Let $W$ be a finite coxeter group, let $W_I$, $W_J$ be standard parabolic subgroups, let $u$, $v$ be minimal double cosets representatives of double cosets in $W_I W / W_J$ and let $u'$, $v'$ be the maximal representatives of those same two cosets. We show that $u < v$ if and only if $u' < v'$ for the Bruhat order.

We introduce and study a family of simplicial complexes associated to an arbitrary finite root system and a nonnegative integer parameter m. For m=1, our construction specializes to the (simplicial) generalized associahedra or, equivalently, to the cluster complexes for the cluster algebras of finite type.
Our computation of the face numbers and h-vectors of these complexes produces the enumerative invariants defined in other contexts by C.A.Athanasiadis, suggesting links to a host of well studied problems in algebraic combinatorics of finite Coxeter groups, root systems, and hyperplane arrangements.
Recurrences satisfied by the face numbers of our complexes lead to combinatorial algorithms for determining Coxeter-theoretic invariants. That is, starting with a Coxeter diagram of a finite Coxeter group, one can compute the Coxeter number, the exponents, and other classical invariants by a recursive procedure that only uses most basic graph-theoretic concepts applied to the input diagram.
In types A and B, we rediscover the constructions and results obtained by E.Tzanaki <math.CO/0501100>.
Generalized descent algebras
If $A$ is a subset of the set of reflections of a finite Coxeter group $W$, we define a sub-${\mathbb{Z}}$-module ${\mathcal{D}}_A(W)$ of the group algebra ${\mathbb{Z}} W$. We provide examples where this submodule is a subalgebra. This family of subalgebras includes strictly the Solomon descent algebra and, if $W$ if of type $B$, the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra.

We extend the weak Bruhat order of a finite Coxeter group to the set of its coclasses, modulo parabolic standard subgroups. We use this order to describe associative algebra structures on the vector spaces spanned by the faces of permutahedra on one side, and on the vector space spanned by the planar rooted trees, on the other one.

For an arbitrary finite Coxeter group W we define the family of Cambrian lattices for W as quotients of the weak order on W with respect to certain lattice congruences. We associate to each Cambrian lattice a complete fan, which we conjecture is the normal fan of a polytope combinatorially isomorphic to the generalized associahedron for W. In types A and B we obtain, by means of a fiber-polytope construction, combinatorial realizations of the Cambrian lattices in terms of triangulations and in terms of permutations. Using this combinatorial information, we prove in types A and B that the Cambrian fans are combinatorially isomorphic to the normal fans of the generalized associahedra and that one of the Cambrian fans is linearly isomorphic to Fomin and Zelevinsky's construction of the normal fan as a "cluster fan." Our construction does not require a crystallographic Coxeter group and therefore suggests a definition, at least on the level of cellular spheres, of a generalized associahedron for any finite Coxeter group. The Tamari lattice is one of the Cambrian lattices of type A, and two "Tamari" lattices in type B are identified and characterized in terms of signed pattern avoidance. We also show that open intervals in Cambrian lattices are either contractible or homotopy equivalent to spheres.
