Polynomials for GL_p x GL_q orbit closures in the flag variety
Published in Selecta Math., Volume 20, Issue 4 (2014), 1083-1110 • View PublicationBIB
The subgroup K=GL_p x GL_q of GL_{p+q} acts on the (complex) flag variety GL_{p+q}/B with finitely many orbits. We introduce a family of polynomials that specializes to representatives for cohomology classes of the orbit closures in the Borel model. We define and study K-orbit determinantal ideals to support the geometric naturality of these representatives. Using a modification of these ideals, we describe an analogy between two local singularity measures: the H-polynomials and the Kazhdan-Lusztig-Vogan polynomials.

Unipotent representations of Lie incidence geometries
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a geometry $Γ$ is isomorphic to the residue of a point $A$ of a shadow geometry of a spherical building $Δ$, a representation $\varepsilon_Δ^A$ of $Γ$ can be given in the unipotent radical $U_{A^*}$ of the stabilizer in $\mathrm{Aut}(Δ)$ of a flag $A^*$ of $Δ$ opposite to $A$, every element of $Γ$ being mapped onto a suitable subgroup of $U_{A^*}$. We call such a representation a unipotent representation. We develope some theory for unipotent representations and we examine a number of interesting cases, where a projective embedding of a Lie incidence geometry $Γ$ can be obtained as a quotient of a suitable unipotent representation $\varepsilon_Δ^A$ by factorizing over the derived subgroup of $U_{A^*}$, while $\varepsilon^A_Δ$ itself is not a proper quotient of any other representation of $Γ$.

Type A quiver loci and Schubert varieties
Published in J. Commut. Algebra Volume 7, Number 2 (2015), 265-301 • View PublicationBIB
We describe a closed immersion from each representation space of a type A quiver with bipartite (i.e., alternating) orientation to a certain opposite Schubert cell of a partial flag variety. This "bipartite Zelevinsky map" restricts to an isomorphism from each orbit closure to a Schubert variety intersected with the above-mentioned opposite Schubert cell. For type A quivers of arbitrary orientation, we give the same result up to some factors of general linear groups. These identifications allow us to recover results of Bobinski and Zwara; namely we see that orbit closures of type A quivers are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, and have rational singularities. We also see that each representation space of a type A quiver admits a Frobenius splitting for which all of its orbit closures are compatibly Frobenius split.
The codegree threshold for 3-graphs with independent neighbourhoods
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a family of 3-graphs $F$, we define its codegree threshold $\mathrm{coex}(n, F)$ to be the largest number $d=d(n)$ such that there exists an $n$-vertex 3-graph in which every pair of vertices is contained in at least $d$ 3-edges but which contains no member of $F$ as a subgraph. Let $F_{3,2}$ be the 3-graph on $\{a,b,c,d,e\}$ with 3-edges $\{abc,abd,abe,cde\}$. In this paper, we give two proofs that $\mathrm{coex}(n, F_{3,2})= n/3 +o(n)$, the first by a direct combinatorial argument and the second via a flag algebra computation. Information extracted from the latter proof is then used to obtain a stability result, from which in turn we derive the exact codegree threshold for all sufficiently large $n$: $\mathrm{coex}(n, F_{3,2})= \lfloor n/3 \rfloor -1$ if $n$ is congruent to $1$ modulo $3$, and $\lfloor n/3 \rfloor$ otherwise. In addition we determine the set of codegree-extremal configurations.

Truncation symmetry type graphs
There are operations that transform a map M (an embedding of a graph on a surface) into another map in the same surface, modifying its structure and consequently its set of flags F(M). For instance, by truncating all the vertices of a map M, each flag in F(M) is divided into three flags of the truncated map. Orbanic, Pellicer and Weiss studied the truncation of k-orbit maps for k < 4. They introduced the notion of T-compatible maps in order to give a necessary condition for a truncation of a k-orbit map to be either k-, 3k/2- or 3k-orbit map. Using a similar notion, by introducing an appropriate partition on the set of flags of the maps, we extend the results on truncation of k-orbit maps for k < 8 and k=9.

Generalized Macaulay representations and the flag $f$-vectors of generalized colored complexes
A colored complex of type $\mathbf{a} = (a_1, \dots, a_n)$ is a simplicial complex $Δ$ on a vertex set $V$, together with an ordered partition $(V_1, \dots, V_n)$ of $V$, such that every face $F$ of $Δ$ satisfies $|F \cap V_i| \leq a_i$. For each $\mathbf{b} = (b_1, \dots, b_n) \leq \mathbf{a}$, let $f_{\mathbf{b}}$ be the number of faces $F$ of $Δ$ such that $|F \cap V_i| = b_i$. The array of integers $\{f_{\mathbf{b}}\}_{\mathbf{b} \leq \mathbf{a}}$ is called the fine $f$-vector of $Δ$, and it is a refinement of the $f$-vector of $Δ$. In this paper, we generalize the notion of Macaulay representations and give a numerical characterization of the fine $f$-vectors of colored complexes of arbitrary type, in terms of these generalized Macaulay representations. As part of the proof, we introduce the property of $\mathbf{a}$-Macaulay decomposability for simplicial complexes, which implies vertex-decomposability, and we show that every pure color-shifted balanced complex $Δ$ of type $\mathbf{a}$ is $\mathbf{a}$-Macaulay decomposable. Combined with previously known results, we also obtain a numerical characterization of the flag $f$-vectors of completely balanced Cohen-Macaulay complexes.

Giambelli and degeneracy locus formulas for classical G/P spaces
Published in Mosc. Math. J. 16 (2016), 125-177 • View PublicationBIB
Let G be a classical complex Lie group, P any parabolic subgroup of G, and X = G/P the corresponding homogeneous space, which parametrizes (isotropic) partial flags of subspaces of a fixed vector space. In the mid 1990s, Fulton, Pragacz, and Ratajski asked for global formulas which express the cohomology classes of the universal Schubert varieties in flag bundles -- when the space X varies in an algebraic family -- in terms of the Chern classes of the vector bundles involved in their definition. This has applications to the theory of degeneracy loci of vector bundles and is closely related to the Giambelli problem for the torus-equivariant cohomology ring of X. In this article, we explain the answer to these questions which was obtained in arXiv:0908.3628, in terms of combinatorial data coming from the Weyl group.

Diagrams of affine permutations, balanced labellings, and symmetric functions
We generalize the work of Fomin, Greene, Reiner, and Shimozono on balanced labellings in two directions: (1) we define the diagrams of affine permutations and the balanced labellings on them; (2) we define the set-valued version of the balanced labellings. We show that the column-strict balanced labellings on the diagram of an affine permutation yield the affine Stanley symmetric function defined by Lam, and that the column-strict set-valued balanced labellings yield the affine stable Grothendieck polynomial of Lam. Moreover, once we impose suitable flag conditions, the flagged column-strict set-valued balanced labellings on the diagram of a finite permutation give a monomial expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial of Lascoux and Schützenberger. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a diagram to be an affine permutation diagram.

Divided Difference Operator for the Highest root Hessenberg variety
Published • View PublicationBIB
We construct a divided difference operator using GKM theory. This generalizes the classical divided difference operator for the cohomology of the complete flag variety. This construction proves a special case of a recent conjecture of Shareshian and Wachs. Our methods are entirely combinatorial and algebraic, and rely heavily on the combinatorics of root systems and Bruhat order.

Bruhat and balanced graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
We generalize chain enumeration in graded partially ordered sets by relaxing the graded, poset and Eulerian requirements. The resulting balanced digraphs, which include the classical Eulerian posets having an $R$-labeling, imply the existence of the (non-homogeneous) ${\bf cd}$-index, a key invariant for studying inequalities for the flag vector of polytopes. Mirroring Alexander duality for Eulerian posets, we show an analogue of Alexander duality for balanced digraphs. For Bruhat graphs of Coxeter groups, an important family of balanced graphs, our theory gives elementary proofs of the existence of the complete ${\bf cd}$-index and its properties. We also introduce the rising and falling quasisymmetric functions of a labeled acyclic digraph and show they are Hopf algebra homomorphisms mapping balanced digraphs to the Stembridge peak algebra. We conjecture nonnegativity of the ${\bf cd}$-index for acyclic digraphs having a balanced linear edge labeling.
Symmetry Type Graphs of Abstract Polytopes and Maniplexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-orbit maniplex is one that has $k$ orbits of flags under the action of its automorphism group. In this paper we extend the notion of symmetry type graphs of maps to that of maniplexes and polytopes and make use of them to study $k$-orbit maniplexes, as well as fully-transitive 3-maniplexes. In particular, we show that there are no fully-transtive $k$-orbit 3-mainplexes with $k > 1$ an odd number, we classify 3-orbit mainplexes and determine all face transitivities for 3- and 4-orbit maniplexes. Moreover, we give generators of the automorphism group of a polytope or a maniplex, given its symmetry type graph. Finally, we extend these notions to oriented polytopes, in particular we classify oriented 2-orbit maniplexes and give generators for their orientation preserving automorphism group.

An upper bound theorem for a class of flag weak pseudomanifolds
If K is an odd-dimensional flag closed manifold, flag generalized homology sphere or a more general flag weak pseudomanifold with sufficiently many vertices, then the maximal number of edges in K is achieved by the balanced join of cycles. The proof relies on stability results from extremal graph theory. In the case of manifolds we also offer an alternative (very) short proof utilizing the non-embeddability theorem of Flores. The main theorem can also be interpreted without the topological contents as a graph-theoretic extremal result about a class of graphs such that 1) every maximal clique in the graph has size d+1 and 2) every clique of size d belongs to exactly two maximal cliques.

The Hirsch conjecture holds for normal flag complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Using an intuition from metric geometry, we prove that any flag and normal simplicial complex satisfies the non-revisiting path conjecture. As a consequence, the diameter of its facet-ridge graph is smaller than the number of vertices minus the dimension, as in the Hirsch conjecture. This proves the Hirsch conjecture for all flag polytopes, and more generally, for all (connected) flag homology manifolds.

Stellar theory for flag complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
Refining a basic result of Alexander, we show that two flag simplicial complexes are piecewise linearly homeomorphic if and only if they can be connected by a sequence of flag complexes, each obtained from the previous one by either an edge subdivision or its inverse. For flag spheres we pose new conjectures on their combinatorial structure forced by their face numbers, analogous to the extremal examples in the upper and lower bound theorems for simplicial spheres. Furthermore, we show that our algorithm to test the conjectures searches through the entire space of flag PL spheres of any given dimension.

Excited Young diagrams, equivariant K-theory, and Schubert varieties
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give combinatorial descriptions of the restrictions to T-fixed points of the classes of structure sheaves of Schubert varieties in the T-equivariant K-theory of Grassmannians and of maximal isotropic Grassmannians of orthogonal and symplectic types. We also give formulas, based on these descriptions, for the Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomials at T-fixed points of the corresponding Schubert varieties. These descriptions and formulas are given in terms of two equivalent combinatorial models: excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. The restriction fomulas are positive, in that for a Schubert variety of codimension d, the formula equals (-1)^d times a sum, with nonnegative coefficients, of monomials in the expressions (e^{-α}-1), as αruns over the positive roots. In types A_n and C_n the restriction formulas had been proved earlier by [Kreiman 05], [Kreiman 06] by a different method. In type A_n, the formula for the Hilbert series had been proved earlier by [Li-Yong 12]. The method of this paper, which relies on a restriction formula of [Graham 02] and [Willems 06], is based on the method used by [Ikeda-Naruse 09] to obtain the analogous formulas in equivariant cohomology. The formulas we give differ from the K-theoretic restriction formulas given by [Ikeda-Naruse 11], which use different versions of excited Young diagrams and set-valued tableaux. We also give Hilbert series and Hilbert polynomial formulas which are valid for Schubert varieties in any cominuscule flag variety, in terms of the 0-Hecke algebra.
Medial symmetry type graphs

A $k$-orbit map is a map with its automorphism group partitioning the set of flags into $k$ orbits. Recently $k$-orbit maps were studied by Orbani\' c, Pellicer and Weiss, for $k \leq 4$. In this paper we use symmetry type graphs to extend such study and classify all the types of $5$-orbit maps, as well as all self-dual, properly and improperly, symmetry type of $k$-orbit maps with $k\leq 7$. Moreover, we determine, for small values of $k$, all types of $k$-orbits maps that are medial maps. Self-dualities constitute an important tool in this quest.

K-orbit closures on G/B as universal degeneracy loci for flagged vector bundles splitting as direct sums
Published • View PublicationBIB
We use equivariant localization and divided difference operators to determine formulas for the torus-equivariant fundamental cohomology classes of $K$-orbit closures on the flag variety $G/B$ for various symmetric pairs $(G,K)$. In type $A$, we realize the closures of $K=GL(p,\C) \times GL(q,\C)$-orbits on $GL(p+q,\C)/B$ as universal degeneracy loci for a vector bundle over a variety which is equipped with a single flag of subbundles and which splits as a direct sum of subbundles of ranks $p$ and $q$. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus relies upon knowing a set-theoretic description of $K$-orbit closures, which we provide via a detailed combinatorial analysis of the poset of "$(p,q)$-clans," which parametrize the orbit closures. We describe precisely how our formulas for the equivariant classes of $K$-orbit closures can be interpreted as formulas for the classes of such degeneracy loci in the Chern classes of the bundles involved. In the cases outside of type $A$, we suggest that the orbit closures should parametrize degeneracy loci involving a vector bundle equipped with a non-degenerate symmetric or skew-symmetric bilinear form, a single flag of subbundles which are isotropic or Lagrangian with respect to the form, and a splitting as a direct sum of subbundles with each summand satisfying some property (depending on $K$) with respect to the form. The precise description of such a degeneracy locus is conjectured for all cases in types $B$ and $C$.

Generalized Schubert Calculus
Published in Journal of the Ramanujan Mathematical Society 28A (Special Issue-2013) pp. 1-42 • Search Publication
In this paper we study the T-equivariant generalized cohomology of flag varieties using two models, the Borel model and the moment graph model. We study the differences between the Schubert classes and the Bott-Samelson classes. After setup of the general framework we compute, for classes of Schubert varieties of complex dimension <4 in rank 2 (including A_2, B_2, G_2 and A_1^{(1)}), moment graph representatives, Pieri-Chevalley formulas and products of Schubert classes. These computations generalize the computations in equivariant K-theory for rank 2 cases which are given in Griffeth-Ram arXiv:math/0405333.

Combinatorics of flag simplicial 3-polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the focus of this paper is the operation of edge contraction. One can show that simplicial 3-polytope is flag iff contraction of any its edge gives simplicial 3-polytope. Our main result states that any flag simplicial 3-polytope can be reduced to octahedron by sequence of edge contractions. Using this operation we introduce a partial order on the set of flag simplicial 3-polytopes and study Hasse graph of corresponding poset. We estimate input and output degrees of vertices of this Hasse graph.
