The graph cohomology ring of the GKM graph of a flag manifold of type $G_2$
Suppose a compact torus $T$ acts on a closed smooth manifold $M$. Under certain conditions, Guillemin and Zara associate to $(M, T)$ a labeled graph $\mG_M$ where the labels lie in $H^2(BT)$. They also define the subring $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ of $\bigoplus_{v\in V(\mG_M)}H^*(BT)$, where $V(\mG_M)$ is the set of vertices of $\mG_M$ and we call $H_T^*(\mG_M)$ the "graph cohomology" ring of $\mG_M$. It is known that the equivariant cohomology ring of $M$ can be described by using combinatorial data of the labeled graph. The main result of this paper is to determine the ring structure of equivariant cohomology ring of a flag manifold of type $G_2$ directly, using combinatorial techniques on the graph $\mG_M$. This gives a new computation of the equivariant cohomology ring of a flag manifold of type $G_2$.

It will be shown that the toric ring of the chain polytope of a finite partially ordered set is an algebra with straightening laws on a finite distributive lattice. Thus in particular every chain polytope possesses a regular unimodular triangulation arising from a flag complex.
Sharp vanishing thresholds for cohomology of random flag complexes

For every $k \ge 1$, the $k$th cohomology group $H^k(X, \Q)$ of the random flag complex $X \sim X(n,p)$ passes through two phase transitions: one where it appears, and one where it vanishes. We describe the vanishing threshold and show that it is sharp. Using the same spectral methods, we also find a sharp threshold for the fundamental group $π_1(X)$ to have Kazhdan's property (T). Combining with earlier results, we obtain as a corollary that for every $k \ge 3$ there is a regime in which the random flag complex is rationally homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of $k$-dimensional spheres.

We study geometric and combinatorial properties of the degenerate flag varieties of type A. These varieties are acted upon by the automorphism group of a certain representation of a type A quiver, containing a maximal torus T. Using the group action, we describe the moment graphs, encoding the zero- and one-dimensional T-orbits. We also study the smooth and singular loci of the degenerate flag varieties. We show that the Euler characteristic of the smooth locus is equal to the large Schröder number and the Poincaré polynomial is given by a natural statistics counting the number of diagonal steps in a Schröder path. As an application we obtain a new combinatorial description of the large and small Schröder numbers and their q-analogues.

We characterize f-vectors of sufficiently large three-dimensional flag Gorenstein* complexes, essentially confirming a conjecture of Gal [Discrete Comput. Geom., 34 (2), 269--284, 2005]. In particular, this characterizes f-vectors of large flag triangulations of the 3-sphere. Actually, our main result is more general and describes the structure of closed flag 3-manifolds which have many edges.
Looking at the 1-skeleta of these manifolds we reduce the problem to a certain question in extremal graph theory. We then resolve this question by employing the Supersaturation Theorem of Erdos and Simonovits.

In a highly influential paper, Bidigare, Hanlon and Rockmore showed that a number of popular Markov chains are random walks on the faces of a hyperplane arrangement. Their analysis of these Markov chains took advantage of the monoid structure on the set of faces. This theory was later extended by Brown to a larger class of monoids called left regular bands. In both cases, the representation theory of these monoids played a prominent role. In particular, it was used to compute the spectrum of the transition operators of the Markov chains and to prove diagonalizability of the transition operators.
In this paper, we establish a close connection between algebraic and combinatorial invariants of a left regular band: we show that certain homological invariants of the algebra of a left regular band coincide with the cohomology of order complexes of posets naturally associated to the left regular band. For instance, we show that the global dimension of these algebras is bounded above by the Leray number of the associated order complex. Conversely, we associate to every flag complex a left regular band whose algebra has global dimension precisely the Leray number of the flag complex.
The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian and the regularity of KP solitons

Given a point A in the real Grassmannian, it is well-known that one can construct a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) to the KP equation. The contour plot of such a solution provides a tropical approximation to the solution when the variables x, y, and t are considered on a large scale and the time t is fixed. In this paper we use several decompositions of the Grassmannian in order to gain an understanding of the contour plots of the corresponding soliton solutions. First we use the positroid stratification of the real Grassmannian in order to characterize the unbounded line-solitons in the contour plots at y>>0 and y<<0. Next we introduce a refinement of the positroid stratification -- the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian -- which is defined to be the projection of Deodhar's decomposition of the complete flag variety. We index the components of the Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian by certain tableaux which we call Go-diagrams, and then use these Go-diagrams to characterize the contour plots of solitons solutions when t<<0. Finally we use these results to show that a soliton solution u_A(x,y,t) is regular for all times t if and only if A comes from the totally non-negative part of the Grassmannian.

We consider the problem of minimizing the number of triangles in a graph of given order and size and describe the asymptotic structure of extremal graphs. This is achieved by characterizing the set of flag algebra homomorphisms that minimize the triangle density.

The paper investigates connections between abstract polytopes and properly edge colored graphs. Given any finite n-edge-colored n-regular graph G, we associate to G a simple abstract polytope P_G of rank n, called the colorful polytope of G, with 1-skeleton isomorphic to G. We investigate the interplay between the geometric, combinatorial, or algebraic properties of the polytope P_G and the combinatorial or algebraic structure of the underlying graph G, focussing in particular on aspects of symmetry. Several such families of colorful polytopes are studied including examples derived from a Cayley graph, in particular the graphicahedra, as well as the flag adjacency polytopes and related monodromy polytopes associated with a given abstract polytope. The duals of certain families of colorful polytopes have been important in the topological study of colored triangulations and crystallization of manifolds.

For any flag nestohedron, we define a flag simplicial complex whose $f$-vector is the $γ$-vector of the nestohedron. This proves that the $γ$-vector of any flag nestohedron satisfies the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai inequalities, partially solving a conjecture by Nevo and Petersen \cite{np}. We also compare these complexes to those defined by Nevo and Petersen in \cite{np} for particular flag nestohedra.

Explicit combinatorial cancellation-free rules are given for the product of an equivariant line bundle class with a Schubert class in the torus-equivariant K-theory of a Kac-Moody flag manifold. The weight of the line bundle may be dominant or antidominant, and the coefficients may be described either by Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths or by the alcove model of the first author and Postnikov. For Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths, our formulas are the Kac-Moody generalizations of results of Griffeth-Ram and Pittie-Ram for finite dimensional flag manifolds. A gap in the proofs of the mentioned results is addressed.

Let G be a simple and simply-connected complex algebraic group, and let X \subset G^\vee be the centralizer subgroup of a principal nilpotent element. Ginzburg and Peterson independently related the ring of functions on X with the homology ring of the affine Grassmannian Gr_G. Peterson furthermore connected this ring to the quantum cohomology rings of partial flag varieties G/P.
The first aim of this paper is to study three different notions of positivity on X: (1) Schubert positivity arising via Peterson's work, (2) total positivity in the sense of Lusztig, and (3) Mirkovic-Vilonen positivity obtained from the MV-cycles in Gr_G. Our first main theorem establishes that these three notions of positivity coincide. The second aim of this paper is to parametrize the totally nonnegative part of X, confirming a conjecture of the second author.
In type A a substantial part of our results were previously established by the second author. The crucial new component of this paper is the connection with the affine Grassmannian and the geometric Satake correspondence.

Let G be a semi-simple simply connected group over complex numbers. In this paper we give a geometric definition of the (dual) Weyl modules over the group G[t] and show that their characters form an eigen-function of the lattice version of the q-Toda integrable integrable system (defined by means of the quantum group version of Kostant-Whittaker reduction due to Etingof and Sevostyanov). All the proofs are algebro-geometric and rely on our previous work which interprets the universal eigen-function of the q-Toda system in terms of rings of functions on the spaces of based quasi-maps from P^1 to the flag variety of G.
We discuss in detail the relation between the current work and the works of Cherednik, Ion, Sanderson and Gerasimov-Lebedev-Oblezin.

We identify the ring of odd symmetric functions introduced by Ellis and Khovanov as the space of skew polynomials fixed by a natural action of the Hecke algebra at q=-1. This allows us to define graded modules over the Hecke algebra at q=-1 that are `odd' analogs of the cohomology of type A Springer varieties. The graded module associated to the full flag variety corresponds to the quotient of the skew polynomial ring by the left ideal of nonconstant odd symmetric functions. The top degree component of the odd cohomology of Springer varieties is identified with the corresponding Specht module of the Hecke algebra at q=-1.

Permutation tableaux are combinatorial objects related with permutations and various statistics on them. They appeared in connection with total positivity in Grassmannians, and stationary probabilities in a PASEP model. In particular they gave rise to an interesting q-analog of Eulerian numbers. The purpose of this article is to study some combinatorial properties of type B permutation tableaux, defined by Lam and Williams, and links with signed permutation statistics. We show that many of the tools used for permutation tableaux generalize in this case, including: the Matrix Ansatz (a method originally related with the PASEP), bijections with labeled paths and links with continued fractions, bijections with signed permutations. In particular we obtain a q-analog of the type B Eulerian numbers, having a lot in common with the previously known q-Eulerian numbers: for example they have a nice symmetry property, they have the type B Narayana numbers as constant terms. The signed permutation statistics arising here are of several kinds. Firstly, there are several variants of descents and excedances, and more precisely of flag descents and flag excedances. Other statistics are the crossings and alignments, which generalize a previous definition on (unsigned) permutations. There are also some pattern-like statistics arising from variants of the bijection of Fran\ccon and Viennot.

Given any finite simplicial complex Δ, we show how to construct a new simplicial complex Δ_χ that is balanced and vertex decomposable. Moreover, we show that the h-vector of the simplicial complex Δ_χ is precisely the f-vector, denoted f(Δ), of the original complex Δ. We deduce this result by relating f(Δ) with the graded Betti numbers of the Alexander dual of Δ_χ. Our construction generalizes the "whiskering" construction of Villarreal, and Cook and Nagel. As a corollary of our work, we add a new equivalent statement to a theorem of Björner, Frankl, and Stanley that classifies the f-vectors of simplicial complexes. We also prove a special case of a conjecture of Cook and Nagel, and Constantinescu and Varbaro on the h-vectors of flag complexes.
Turán densities of hypercubes
In this paper we describe a number of extensions to Razborov's semidefinite flag algebra method. We will begin by showing how to apply the method to significantly improve the upper bounds of edge and vertex Turán density type results for hypercubes. We will then introduce an improvement to the method which can be applied in a more general setting, notably to 3-uniform hypergraphs, to get a new upper bound of 0.5615 for $π(K_4^3)$.
For hypercubes we improve Thomason and Wagner's result on the upper bound of the edge Turán density of a 4-cycle free subcube to 0.60318 and Chung's result on forbidding 6-cycles to 0.36577. We also show that the upper bound of the vertex Turán density of $\mc{Q}_3$ can be improved to 0.76900, and that the vertex Turán density of $\mc{Q}_3$ with one vertex removed is precisely 2/3.

The flag vector contains all the face incidence data of a polytope, and in the poset setting, the chain enumerative data. It is a classical result due to Bayer and Klapper that for face lattices of polytopes, and more generally, Eulerian graded posets, the flag vector can be written as a cd-index, a non-commutative polynomial which removes all the linear redundancies among the flag vector entries. This result holds for regular CW complexes.
We relax the regularity condition to show the cd-index exists for Whitney stratified manifolds by extending the notion of a graded poset to that of a quasi-graded poset. This is a poset endowed with an order-preserving rank function and a weighted zeta function. This allows us to generalize the classical notion of Eulerianness, and obtain a cd-index in the quasi-graded poset arena. We also extend the semi-suspension operation to that of embedding a complex in the boundary of a higher dimensional ball and study the simplicial shelling components.

For a CAT(0) cube complex $\mathbf X$, we define a simplicial flag complex $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$, called the \emph{simplicial boundary}, which is a natural setting for studying non-hyperbolic behavior of $\mathbf X$. We compare $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ to the Roller, visual, and Tits boundaries of $\mathbf X$ and give conditions under which the natural CAT(1) metric on $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ makes it (quasi)isometric to the Tits boundary. $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ allows us to interpolate between studying geodesic rays in $\mathbf X$ and the geometry of its \emph{contact graph} $Γ\mathbf X$, which is known to be quasi-isometric to a tree, and we characterize essential cube complexes for which the contact graph is bounded. Using related techniques, we study divergence of combinatorial geodesics in $\mathbf X$ using $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$. Finally, we rephrase the rank-rigidity theorem of Caprace-Sageev in terms of group actions on $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$ and state characterizations of cubulated groups with linear divergence in terms of $Γ\mathbf X$ and $\partial_Δ\mathbf X$.
