We show that monomial ideals generated in degree two satisfy a conjecture by Eisenbud, Green and Harris. In particular we give a partial answer to a conjecture of Kalai by proving that $h$-vectors of flag Cohen-Macaulay simplicial complexes are $h$-vectors of Cohen-Macaulay balanced simplicial complexes.
Orbit graphs and face-transitivity of k-orbit polytopes
The orbit graph of a k-orbit polytope is a graph on k nodes that shows how the flag orbits are related by flag adjacency. Using orbit graphs, we classify k-orbit polytopes and determine when a k-orbit polytope is i-transitive. We then provide an explicit classification of three-orbit polytopes, and we describe a generating set for their automorphism groups.

The 0-Hecke algebra $H_n(0)$ is a deformation of the group algebra of the symmetric group $\SS_n$. We show that its coinvariant algebra naturally carries the regular representation of $H_n(0)$, giving an analogue of the well-known result for $\SS_n$ by Chevalley-Shephard-Todd. By investigating the action of $H_n(0)$ on coinvariants and flag varieties, we interpret the generating functions counting the permutations with fixed inverse descent set by their inversion number and major index. We also study the action of $H_n(0)$ on the cohomology rings of the Springer fibers, and similarly interpret the (noncommutative) Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions indexed by hook shapes.

For a graph G, let p_i(G), i=0,...,3 be the probability that three distinct random vertices span exactly i edges. We call (p_0(G),...,p_3(G)) the 3-local profile of G. We investigate the set ${\cal S}_3 \subset \mathbb R^4$ of all vectors (p_0,...,p_3) that are arbitrarily close to the 3-local profiles of arbitrarily large graphs. We give a full description of the projection of ${\cal S}_3$ to the (p_0, p_3) plane. The upper envelope of this planar domain is obtained from cliques on a fraction of the vertex set and complements of such graphs. The lower envelope is Goodman's inequality p_0+p_3\geq 1/4. We also give a full description of the triangle-free case, i.e., the intersection of ${\cal S}_3$ with the hyperplane p_3=0. This planar domain is characterized by an SDP constraint that is derived from Razborov's flag algebra theory.
Tropical Incidence Relations, Polytopes, and Concordant Matroids
In this paper, we develop a tropical analog of the classical flag variety that we call the flag Dressian. We find relations, which we call "tropical incidence relations", for when one tropical linear space is contained in another, and show that the flag Dressian is a tropical prevariety. In the case of 2-step flag Dressians, which we call "tropical incidence prevarieties", we find an equivalence between points in this space and induced subdivisions of a hypersimplex, generalizing two parts of an equivalence given by D. Speyer for tropical linear spaces. We attempt to generalize the third part of Speyer's equivalence to concordant matroids and obtain some partial results.

We study the binomial and monomial ideals arising from linear equivalence of divisors on graphs from the point of view of Gröbner theory. We give an explicit description of a minimal Gröbner bases for each higher syzygy module. In each case the given minimal Gröbner bases is also a minimal generating set. The Betti numbers of the binomial ideal and its natural initial ideal coincide and they correspond to the number of 'connected flags' in the graph. In particular the Betti numbers are independent of the characteristic of the base field. For complete graphs the problem was previously studied by Postnikov and Shapiro and by Manjunath and Sturmfels. The case of a general graph was stated as an open problem.

Deodhar introduced his decomposition of partial flag varieties as a tool for understanding Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials. The Deodhar decomposition of the Grassmannian is also useful in the context of soliton solutions to the KP equation, as shown by Kodama and the second author. Deodhar components S_D of the Grassmannian are in bijection with certain tableaux D called Go-diagrams, and each component is isomorphic to (K*)^a \times (K)^b for some non-negative integers a and b.
Our main result is an explicit parameterization of each Deodhar component in the Grassmannian in terms of networks. More specifically, from a Go-diagram D we construct a weighted network N_D and its weight matrix W_D, whose entries enumerate directed paths in N_D. By letting the weights in the network vary over K or K* as appropriate, one gets a parameterization of the Deodhar component S_D. One application of such a parameterization is that one may immediately determine which Plucker coordinates are vanishing and nonvanishing, by using the Lindstrom-Gessel-Viennot Lemma. We also give a (minimal) characterization of each Deodhar component in terms of Plucker coordinates. A main tool for us is the work of Marsh and Rietsch on Deodhar components in the flag variety.

We identify three 3-graphs on five vertices each missing in all known extremal configurations for Turan's (3,4)-problem and prove Turan's conjecture for 3-graphs that are additionally known not to contain any induced copies of these 3-graphs. Our argument is based on an (apparently) new technique of "indirect interpretation" that allows us to retrieve additional structure from hypothetical counterexamples to Turan's conjecture, but in rather loose and limited sense. We also include two miscellaneous calculations in flag algebras that prove similar results about some other additional forbidden subgraphs.
The Flag Descent Algebra and the Colored Eulerian Descent Algebra
We prove that the group algebra of the hyperoctahedral group contains a subalgebra corresponding to the flag descent number of Adin, Brenti, and Roichman. This algebra is in fact the span of the basis elements of the type A and type B Eulerian descent algebras. We describe a set of orthogonal idempotents which spans the flag descent algebra and prove that it contains the type A Eulerian descent algebra as a two-sided ideal. Using a new colored analogue of Stanley's $P$-partitions, we prove the existence of a colored Eulerian descent algebra which is a subalgebra of the Mantaci-Reutenauer algebra. We also describe a set of orthogonal idempotents that spans the colored Eulerian descent algebra and includes, as a special case, the familiar Eulerian idempotents in the group algebra of the symmetric group.

Regular polygonal complexes in euclidean 3-space are discrete polyhedra-like structures with finite or infinite polygons as faces and with finite graphs as vertex-figures, such that their symmetry groups are transitive on the flags. The present paper and its predecessor describe a complete classification of regular polygonal complexes in 3-space. In Part I we established basic structural results for the symmetry groups, discussed operations on their generators, characterized the complexes with face mirrors as the 2-skeletons of the regular 4-apeirotopes in 3-space, and fully enumerated the simply flag-transitive complexes with mirror vector (1,2). In this paper, we complete the enumeration of all regular polygonal complexes and in particular describe the simply flag-transitive complexes for the remaining mirror vectors. It is found that, up to similarity, there are precisely 25 regular polygonal complexes which are not regular polyhedra, namely 21 simply flag-transitive complexes and 4 complexes which are 2-skeletons of regular 4-apeirotopes.
A Geometric Definition Of Schubert Polynomials and Dual Schubert Polynomials For Classical Lie Groups
In this paper, we first discuss the topological properties of projective Stiefel manifolds, we compute their cohomology rings and classify their cohomology endomorphisms; Then by embedding the flag manifold of a classical Lie group into its corresponding infinite dimensional projective Stiefel manifold(which is homotopic to the product of infinite dimensional complex projective space $\mathbb{C}P^{\infty}$), we define the Schubert polynomials and dual Schubert polynomials. Finally we discuss the property and the computation of these polynomials.
Schur times Schubert via the Fomin-Kirillov algebra
We study multiplication of any Schubert polynomial $\mathfrak{S}_w$ by a Schur polynomial $s_λ$ (the Schubert polynomial of a Grassmannian permutation) and the expansion of this product in the ring of Schubert polynomials. We derive explicit nonnegative combinatorial expressions for the expansion coefficients for certain special partitions $λ$, including hooks and the 2x2 box. We also prove combinatorially the existence of such nonnegative expansion when the Young diagram of $λ$ is a hook plus a box at the (2,2) corner. We achieve this by evaluating Schubert polynomials at the Dunkl elements of the Fomin-Kirillov algebra and proving special cases of the nonnegativity conjecture of Fomin and Kirillov.
This approach works in the more general setup of the (small) quantum cohomology ring of the complex flag manifold and the corresponding (3-point) Gromov-Witten invariants. We provide an algebro-combinatorial proof of the nonnegativity of the Gromov-Witten invariants in these cases, and present combinatorial expressions for these coefficients.
From flag complexes to banner complexes

A notion of an $i$-banner simplicial complex is introduced. For various values of $i$, these complexes interpolate between the class of flag complexes and the class of all simplicial complexes. Examples of simplicial spheres of an arbitrary dimension that are $(i+1)$-banner but not $i$-banner are constructed. It is shown that several theorems for flag complexes have appropriate $i$-banner analogues. Among them are (1) the codimension-$(i+j-1)$ skeleton of an $i$-banner homology sphere $Δ$ is $2(i+j)$-Cohen--Macaulay for all $0\leq j\leq \dimΔ+1-i$, and (2) for every $i$-banner simplicial complex $Δ$ there exists a balanced complex $Γ$ with the same number of vertices as $Δ$ whose face numbers of dimension $i-1$ and higher coincide with those of $Δ$.

This paper continues investigation of the class of flag simple polytopes called 2-truncated cubes. It is an extended version of the short note Volodin (2012). A 2-truncated cube is a polytope obtained from a cube by sequence of truncations of codimension 2 faces. Constructed uniquely defined function which maps any 2-truncated cube to a flag simplicial complex with $f$-vector equal to $γ$-vector of the polytope. As a corollary we obtain that $γ$-vectors of 2-truncated cubes satisfy Frankl-Furedi-Kalai inequalities.
Schubert problems with respect to osculating flags of stable rational curves

Given a point z in P^1, let F(z) be the osculating flag to the rational normal curve at point z. The study of Schubert problems with respect to such flags F(z_1), F(z_2), ..., F(z_r) has been studied both classically and recently, especially when the points z_i are real. Since the rational normal curve has an action of PGL_2, it is natural to consider the points (z_1, ..., z_r) as living in the moduli space of r distinct point in P^1 -- the famous M_{0,r}. One can then ask to extend the results on Schubert intersections to the compactification \bar{M}_{0,r}.
The first part of this paper achieves this goal. We construct a flat, Cohen-Macaulay family over \bar{M}_{0,r}, whose fibers over M_{0,r} are isomorphic to G(d,n) and, given partitions lambda_1, ..., lambda_r, we construct a flat Cohen-Macualay family over \bar{M}_{0,r} whose fiber over (z_1, ..., z_r) in M_{0,r} is the intersection of the Schubert varieties indexed by lambda_i with respect to the osculating flags F(z_i).
In the second part of the paper, we investigate the topology of the real points of our family, in the case that sum |lambda_i| = dim G(d,n). We show that our family is a finite covering space of \bar{M}_{0,r}, and give an explicit CW decomposition of this cover whose faces are indexed by objects from the theory of Young tableaux.
gamma-vectors of edge subdivisions of the boundary of the cross polytope
For any flag simplicial complex $Θ$ obtained by stellar subdividing the boundary of the cross polytope in edges, we define a flag simplicial complex $Γ(Θ)$ (dependent on the sequence of subdivisions) whose $f$-vector is the $γ$-vector of $Θ$. This proves that the $γ$-vector of any such simplicial complex satisfies the Frankl-Füredi-Kalai inequalities, partially solving a conjecture by Nevo and Petersen \cite{np}. We show that when $Θ$ is the dual simplicial complex to a nestohedron, and the sequence of subdivisions corresponds to a flag ordering as defined in \cite{ai}, that $Γ(Θ)$ is equal to the flag simplical complex defined there.

We observe that the expansion in the basis of Schubert cycles for $H^*(G/B)$ of the class of a Richardson variety stable under a spherical Levi subgroup is described by a theorem of Brion. Using this observation, along with a combinatorial model of the poset of certain symmetric subgroup orbit closures, we give positive combinatorial descriptions of certain Schubert structure constants on the full flag variety in type $A$. Namely, we describe $c_{u,v}^w$ when $u$ and $v$ are inverse to Grassmannian permutations with unique descents at $p$ and $q$, respectively. We offer some conjectures for similar rules in types $B$ and $D$, associated to Richardson varieties stable under spherical Levi subgroups of $SO(2n+1,\C)$ and $SO(2n,\C)$, respectively.

We classify flag complexes on at most 12 vertices with torsion in the first homology group. The result is moderately computer-aided.
As a consequence we confirm a folklore conjecture that the smallest poset whose order complex is homotopy equivalent to the real projective plane (and also the smallest poset with torsion in the first homology group) has exactly 13 elements.

We consider the equivalence relation ~ on the symmetric group S_n generated by the interchange of two adjacent elements a_i and a_{i+1} of w=a_1 ... a_n in S_n such that |a_i - a_{i+1}|=1. We count the number of equivalence classes and the sizes of equivalence classes. The results are generalized to permutations of multisets using umbral techniques. In the original problem, the equivalence class containing the identity permutation is the set of linear extensions of a certain poset. Further investigation yields a characterization of all finite graded posets whose flag h-vector takes on only the values -1, 0, 1.
On the connectivity of manifold graphs
This paper is concerned with lower bounds for the connectivity of graphs (one-dimensional skeleta) of triangulations of compact manifolds. We introduce a structural invariant b_M for simplicial d-manifolds M taking values in the range 0 <= b_M <= d-1. The main result is that b_M influences connectivity in the following way: The graph of a d-dimensional simplicial compact manifold M is (2d - b_M)-connected.
The parameter b_M has the property that b_M = 0 if the complex M is flag. Hence, our result interpolates between Barnette's theorem (1982) that all d-manifold graphs are (d+1)-connected and Athanasiadis' theorem (2011) that flag d-manifold graphs are 2d-connected.
The definition of b_M involves the concept of banner triangulations of manifolds, a generalization of flag triangulations.
