Crystal structures for symmetric Grothendieck polynomials
Published in Transform. Groups 26(3):1025-1075, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
The symmetric Grothendieck polynomials representing Schubert classes in the $K$-theory of Grassmannians are generating functions for semistandard set-valued tableaux. We construct a type $A_n$ crystal structure on these tableaux. This crystal yields a new combinatorial formula for decomposing symmetric Grothendieck polynomials into Schur polynomials. For single-columns and single-rows, we give a new combinatorial interpretation of Lascoux polynomials (K-analogs of Demazure characters) by constructing a K-theoretic analog of crystals with an appropriate analog of a Demazure crystal. We relate our crystal structure to combinatorial models using excited Young diagrams, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns via the $5$-vertex model, and biwords via Hecke insertion to compute symmetric Grothendieck polynomials.

Positive temperature dynamics on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns restricted by wall
The thesis focuses on processes on symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns. In chapter 4, a process with dynamics inspired by the Berele correspondence [Ber86] is presented. It is proved that the shape of the pattern is a Doob $h$-transform of independent random walks with $h$ given by the symplectic Schur function. This is followed by an extension to a $q$-weighted version. This randomised version has itself a branching structure and is related to a $q$-deformation of the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions. In chapter 5, we present a fully randomised process. This process $q$-deforms a process proposed in [WW09]. In chapter 7 we prove the convergence of the $q$-deformation of the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions to the classical $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions when $q \to 1$. Finally, in chapter 8 we turn our interest to the continuous setting and construct a process on patterns which contains a positive temperature analogue of the Dyson's Brownian motion of type $B/C$. The processes obtained are $h$-transforms of Brownian motions killed at a continuous rate that depends on their distance from the boundary of the Weyl chamber of type $B/C$, with $h$ related with the $so_{2n+1}$-Whittaker functions.

$R$-systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Birational toggling on Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns appeared first in the study of geometric crystals and geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence. Based on these birational toggle relations, Einstein and Propp introduced a discrete dynamical system called birational rowmotion associated with a partially ordered set. We generalize birational rowmotion to the class of arbitrary strongly connected directed graphs, calling the resulting discrete dynamical system the $R$-system. We study its integrability from the points of view of singularity confinement and algebraic entropy. We show that in many cases, singularity confinement in an $R$-system reduces to the Laurent phenomenon either in a cluster algebra, or in a Laurent phenomenon algebra, or beyond both of those generalities, giving rise to many new sequences with the Laurent property possessing rich groups of symmetries. Some special cases of $R$-systems reduce to Somos and Gale-Robinson sequences.

On q-integrals over order polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A combinatorial study of multiple $q$-integrals is developed. This includes a $q$-volume of a convex polytope, which depends upon the order of $q$-integration. A multiple $q$-integral over an order polytope of a poset is interpreted as a generating function of linear extensions of the poset. Specific modifications of posets are shown to give predictable changes in $q$-integrals over their respective order polytopes. This method is used to combinatorially evaluate some generalized $q$-beta integrals. One such application is a combinatorial interpretation of a $q$-Selberg integral. New generating functions for generalized Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and reverse plane partitions are established. A $q$-analogue to a well known result in Ehrhart theory is generalized using $q$-volumes and $q$-Ehrhart polynomials.

Dual wavefunction of the Felderhof model
Published in Lett. Math. Phys. 1235-1263 (107) 2017 • View PublicationBIB
We study the Felderhof free-fermion six-vertex model, whose wavefunction recently turned out to possess rich combinatorial structure of the Schur polynomials. We investigate the dual version of the wavefunction in this paper, which seems to be a harder object to analyze. We evaluate the dual wavefunction in two ways. First, we give the exact correspondence between the dual wavefunction and the Schur polynomials, for which two proofs are given. Next, we make a microscopic analysis and express the dual wavefunction in terms of strict Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As a consequence of these two ways of evaluation of the dual wavefunction, we obtain a dual version of the Tokuyama combinatorial formula for the Schur polynomials. We also give a generalization of the correspondence between the dual wavefunction of the Felderhof model and the factorial Schur polynomials.

On Chari-Loktev bases for local Weyl modules in type $A$
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a study of the bases introduced by Chari-Loktev for local Weyl modules of the current algebra associated to a special linear Lie algebra. Partition overlaid patterns, POPs for short---whose introduction is one of the aims of this paper---form convenient parametrizing sets of these bases. They play a role analogous to that played by (Gelfand-Tsetlin) patterns in the representation theory of the special linear Lie algebra. The notion of a POP leads naturally to the notion of area of a pattern. We observe that there is a unique pattern of maximal area among all those with a given bounding sequence and given weight. We give a combinatorial proof of this and discuss its representation theoretic relevance. We then state a conjecture about the "stability", i.e., compatibility in the long range, of Chari-Loktev bases with respect to inclusions of local Weyl modules. In order to state the conjecture, we establish a certain bijection between colored partitions and POPs, which may be of interest in itself.

The involutive nature of the Littlewood-Richardson commutativity bijection
Published • View PublicationBIB
Littlewood-Richardson (LR) coefficients $c_{μν}^λ$ may be evaluated by means of several combinatorial models, including the original LR tableaux of skew shape $λ/μ$ and weight $ν$ and the LR hives with boundary edge labels $λ$, $μ$ and $ν$. Unfortunately, neither of these reveal in any obvious way the well-known symmetry property $c_{μν}^λ=c_{νμ}^λ$. Here we introduce two maps, $ρ^{(n)}$ on LR tableaux and $σ^{(n)}$ on LR hives, that each interchange contributions to $c_{μν}^λ$ and $c_{νμ}^λ$ for any partitions $λ$, $μ$, $ν$ of lengths no greater than $n$, and then prove not only that each of them is a bijection, thereby making manifest the required symmetry property, but also that both maps are involutions. The map $ρ^{(n)}$ involves the iterative action of deletion operators on a given LR tableau of skew shape $λ/μ$ and weight $ν$, that produce a sequence of successively smaller tableaux whose consecutive inner shapes define a certain Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern and determine a partner LR tableau of skew shape $λ/ν$ and weight $μ$. Similarly, the map $σ^{(n)}$ involves repeated path removals from a given LR hive with boundary edge labels $(λ,μ,ν)$ that give rise to a sequence of hives whose left-hand boundary edge labels define the same Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern as before, which is sufficient to determine a partner LR hive with boundary edge labels $(λ,ν,μ)$. The deletions in tableaux are organised so as to preserve the semistandard and lattice permutation properties of LR tableaux, while the path removals in hives are designed to preserve both the triangle condition on edge labels and the hive rhombus gradient positivity conditions. At all stages illustrative examples are provided.

A note on corollaries to Tokuyama's Identity for symplectic Schur $Q$-Functions
We present some corollaries to a symplectic primed shifted tableaux version of Tokuyama's identity expressed in terms of other combinatorial constructs, namely generalised $U$-turn alternating sign matrices and strict symplectic Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns.

A Generalization of Tokuyama's Formula to the Hall-Littlewood Polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
A theorem due to Tokuyama expresses Schur polynomials in terms of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, providing a deformation of the Weyl character formula and two other classical results, Stanley's formula for the Schur $q$-polynomials and Gelfand's parametrization for the Schur polynomial. We generalize Tokuyama's formula to the Hall-Littlewood polynomials by extending Tokuyama's statistics. Our result, in addition to specializing to Tokuyama's result and the aforementioned classical results, also yields connections to the monomial symmetric function and a new deformation of Stanley's formula.

A q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted algorithm
Published in Electron. J. Probab. 18, 1-25 (2013) • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a q-weighted version of the Robinson-Schensted (column insertion) algorithm which is closely connected to q-Whittaker functions (or Macdonald polynomials with t=0) and reduces to the usual Robinson-Schensted algorithm when q=0. The q-insertion algorithm is `randomised', or `quantum', in the sense that when inserting a positive integer into a tableau, the output is a distribution of weights on a particular set of tableaux which includes the output which would have been obtained via the usual column insertion algorithm. There is also a notion of recording tableau in this setting. We show that the distribution of weights of the pair of tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word or permutation takes a particularly simple form and is closely related to q-Whittaker functions. In the case $0\le q<1$, the q-insertion algorithm applied to a random word also provides a new framework for solving the q-TASEP interacting particle system introduced (in the language of q-bosons) by Sasamoto and Wadati (1998) and yields formulas which are equivalent to some of those recently obtained by Borodin and Corwin (2011) via a stochastic evolution on discrete Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns (or semistandard tableaux) which is coupled to the q-TASEP process. We show that the sequence of P-tableaux obtained when one applies the q-insertion algorithm to a random word defines another, quite different, evolution on semistandard tableaux which is also coupled to the q-TASEP process.

Sequences of labeled trees related to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns
Published • View PublicationBIB
By rewriting the famous hook-content formula it easily follows that there are $\prod\limits_{1 \le i < j \le n} \frac{k_j - k_i + j -i}{j-i}$ semistandard tableaux of shape $(k_n,k_{n-1},...,k_1)$ with entries in $\{1,2,...,n\}$ or, equivalently, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with bottom row $(k_1,...,k_n)$. In this article we introduce certain sequences of labeled trees, the signed enumeration of which is also given by this formula. In these trees, vertices as well as edges are labeled, the crucial condition being that each edge label lies between the vertex labels of the two endpoints of the edge. This notion enables us to give combinatorial explanations of the shifted antisymmetry of the formula and its polynomiality. Furthermore, we propose to develop an analog approach of combinatorial reasoning for monotone triangles and explain how this may lead to a combinatorial understanding of the alternating sign matrix theorem.
A non-crossing standard monomial theory

The second author has introduced non-crossing tableaux, objects whose non-nesting analogues are semi-standard Young tableaux. We relate non-crossing tableaux to Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns and develop the non-crossing analogue of standard monomial theory. Leclerc and Zelevinsky's weakly separated sets are special cases of non-crossing tableaux, and we suggest that non-crossing tableaux may help illuminate the theory of weakly separated sets.

Discrete strip-concave functions, Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns, and related polyhedra
Published in J. of Combinatorial Theory, Ser. A, 112, No 2, 2005, 175-193 • View PublicationBIB
Discrete strip-concave functions considered in this paper are, in fact, equivalent to an extension of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns to the case when the pattern has a not necessarily triangular but convex configuration. They arise by releasing one of the three types of rhombus inequalities for discrete concave functions (or ``hives'') on a ``convex part'' of a triangular grid. The paper is devoted to a combinatorial study of certain polyhedra related to such functions or patterns, and results on faces, integer points and volumes of these polyhedra are presented. Also some relationships and applications are discussed. In particular, we characterize, in terms of valid inequalities, the polyhedral cone formed by the boundary values of discrete strip-concave functions on a grid having trapezoidal configuration. As a consequence of this result, necessary and sufficient conditions on a pair of vectors to be the shape and content of a semi-standard skew Young tableau are obtained.

Vertices of Gelfand-Tsetlin Polytopes
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper is a study of the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns arising in the representation theory $\mathfrak{gl}_n \C$ and algebraic combinatorics. We present a combinatorial characterization of the vertices and a method to calculate the dimension of the lowest-dimensional face containing a given Gelfand-Tsetlin pattern. As an application, we disprove a conjecture of Berenstein and Kirillov about the integrality of all vertices of the Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes. We can construct for each $n\geq5$ a counterexample, with arbitrarily increasing denominators as $n$ grows, of a non-integral vertex. This is the first infinite family of non-integral polyhedra for which the Ehrhart counting function is still a polynomial. We also derive a bound on the denominators for the non-integral vertices when $n$ is fixed.
