Zeta functions, heat kernels and spectral asymptotics on degenerating families of discrete tori

By a discrete torus we mean the Cayley graph associated to a finite product of finite cycle groups with generating set given by choosing a generator for each cyclic factor. In this article we study the spectral theory of the combinatorial Laplacian for sequences of discrete tori when the orders of the cyclic factors tend to infinity at comparable rates. First we show that the sequence of heat kernels corresponding to the degenerating family converges, after re-scaling, to the heat kernel on an associated real torus. We then establish an asymptotic expansion, in the degeneration parameter, of the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian. The zeta-regularized determinant of the Laplacian of the limiting real torus appears as the constant term in this expansion. On the other hand, using a classical theorem by Kirchhoff the determinant of the combinatorial Laplacian of a finite graph divided by the number of vertices equals the number of spanning trees, called the complexity, of the graph. As a result, we establish a precise connection between the complexity of the Cayley graphs of finite abelian groups and heights of real tori. It is also known that spectral determinants on discrete tori can be expressed using trigonometric functions and that spectral determinants on real tori can be expressed using modular forms on general linear groups. Another interpretation of our analysis is thus to establish a link between limiting values of certain products of trigonometric functions and modular forms. The heat kernel analysis which we employ uses a careful study of I-Bessel functions. Our methods extend to prove the asymptotic behavior of other spectral invariants through degeneration, such as special values of spectral zeta functions and Epstein-Hurwitz type zeta functions.

We compute the Frobenius trace functions of mirabolic character sheaves defined over a finite field. The answer is given in terms of the character values of general linear groups over the finite field, and the structure constants of multiplication in the mirabolic Hall-Littlewood basis of symmetric functions, introduced by Shoji.

A known result for the finite general linear group $\GL(n,\FF_q)$ and for the finite unitary group $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ posits that the sum of the irreducible character degrees is equal to the number of symmetric matrices in the group. Fulman and Guralnick extended this result by considering sums of irreducible characters evaluated at an arbitrary conjugacy class of $\GL(n,\FF_q)$. We develop an explicit formula for the value of the permutation character of $\U(2n,\FF_{q^2})$ over $\Sp(2n,\FF_q)$ evaluated an an arbitrary conjugacy class and use results concerning Gelfand-Graev characters to obtain an analogous formula for $\U(n,\FF_{q^2})$ in the case where $q$ is an odd prime. These results are also given as probabilistic statements.

Let G be a finite group. Define a relation ~ on the conjugacy classes of G by setting C ~ D if there are representatives c \in C and d \in D such that cd = dc. In the case where G has a normal subgroup H such that G/H is cyclic, two theorems are proved concerning the distribution, between cosets of H, of pairs of conjugacy classes of G related by ~. One of the proofs involves an interesting application of the famous Marriage Theorem of Philip Hall.
The paper concludes by discussing some aspects of these theorems and of the relation ~ in the particular cases of symmetric and general linear groups, and by mentioning an open question related to Frobenius groups.

The character ring \CGL of covariant irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group admits a Hopf algebra structure isomorphic to the Hopf algebra \Sym$ of symmetric functions. Here we study the character rings \CO and \CSp of the orthogonal and symplectic subgroups of the general linear group within the same framework of symmetric functions. We show that \CO and \CSp also admit natural Hopf algebra structures that are isomorphic to that of \CGL, and hence to \Sym. The isomorphisms are determined explicitly, along with the specification of standard bases for \CO and \CSp analogous to those used for \Sym. A major structural change arising from the adoption of these bases is the introduction of new orthogonal and symplectic Schur-Hall scalar products. Significantly, the adjoint with respect to multiplication no longer coincides, as it does in the \CGL case, with a Foulkes derivative or skew operation. The adjoint and Foulkes derivative now require separate definitions, and their properties are explored here in the orthogonal and symplectic cases. Moreover, the Hopf algebras \CO and \CSp are not self-dual. The dual Hopf algebras \CO^* and \CSp^* are identified. Finally, the Hopf algebra of the universal rational character ring \CGLrat of mixed irreducible tensor representations of the general linear group is introduced and its structure maps identified.

Let q be a power of a prime and n a positive integer. Let P(q) be a parabolic subgroup of the finite general linear group GL(n,q). We show that the number of P(q)-conjugacy classes in GL(n,q) is, as a function of q, a polynomial in q with integer coefficients. This answers a question of J. Alperin.
Kempf collapsing and quiver loci
Kempf [1976] studied proper, G-equivariant maps from equivariant vector bundles over flag manifolds to G-representations V, which he called _collapsings_. We give a simple formula for the G-equivariant cohomology class on V, or_multidegree_, associated to the image of a collapsing: apply a certain sequence of divided difference operators to a certain product of linear polynomials, then divide by the number of components in a general fiber. When that number of components is 1, we construct a desingularization of the image of the collapsing. If in addition the image has rational singularities, we can use the desingularization to give also a formula for the G-equivariant K-class of the image, whose leading term is the multidegree.
Our application is to quiver loci and quiver polynomials. Let Q be a quiver of finite type (A, D, or E, in arbitrary orientation), and assign a vector space to each vertex. Let \Hom denote the (linear) space of representations of Q with these vector spaces. This carries an action of GL, the product of the general linear groups of the individual vector spaces. A_quiver locus_ Ωis the closure in \Hom of a GL-orbit, and its multidegree is the corresponding _quiver polynomial_. Reineke [2004] proved that every ADE quiver locus is the image of a birational Kempf collapsing (giving a desingularization directly).
Using Reineke's collapsings, we give formulae for ADE quiver polynomials, previously only computed in type A (though in this case, our formulae are new). In the A and D cases quiver loci are known to have rational singularities [Bobiński-Zwara 2002], so we also get formulae for their K-classes, which had previously only been computed in equioriented type A (and again our formulae are new).

Motivated by recent developments on visible actions on complex manifolds, we raise a question whether or not the multiplication of three subgroups $L$, $G'$ and $H$ surjects a Lie group $G$ in the setting that $G/H$ carries a complex structure and contains $G'/G' \cap H$ as a totally real submanifold.
Particularly important cases are when $G/L$ and $G/H$ are generalized flag varieties, and we classify pairs of Levi subgroups $(L, H)$ such that $L G' H = G$, or equivalently, the real generalized flag variety $G'/H \cap G'$ meets every $L$-orbit on the complex generalized flag variety $G/H$ in the setting that $(G, G') = (U(n), O(n))$.
For such pairs $(L, H)$, we introduce a \textit{herringbone stitch} method to find a generalized Cartan decomposition for the double coset space $L \backslash G/H$, for which there has been no general theory in the non-symmetric case.
Our geometric results provides a unified proof of various multiplicity-free theorems in representation theory of general linear groups.

It is well known that over an infinite field the ring of symmetric functions in a finite number of variables is isomorphic to the one of polynomial functions on matrices that are invariants by the action of conjugation by general linear group. We generalize this result showing that the abelianization of the algebra of the symmetric tensors of fixed order over a free associative algebra is isomorphic to the algebra of the polynomials invariants of several matrices over an infinite field or the integers. While proving the main result we find generators and relations of abelianized divided powers of an algebra over any commutative ring.

Let G be a group acting faithfully on a set X. The distinguishing number of the action of G on X is the smallest number of colors such that there exists a coloring of X where no nontrivial group element induces a color-preserving permutation of X. In this paper, we show that if G is nilpotent of class c or supersolvable of length c then G always acts with distinguishing number at most c+1. We obtain that all metacyclic groups act with distinguishing number at most 3; these include all groups of squarefree order. We also prove that the distinguishing number of the action of the general linear group over a field K on the vector space K^n is 2 if K has at least n+1 elements.

In his classic book on symmetric functions, Macdonald describes a remarkable result by Green relating the character theory of the finite general linear group to transition matrices between bases of symmetric functions. This connection allows us to analyze the representation theory of the general linear group via symmetric group combinatorics. Using the work of Ennola, Kawanaka, Lusztig and Srinivasan, this paper describes the analogous setting for the finite unitary group. In particular, we explain the connection between Deligne-Lusztig theory and Ennola's efforts to generalize Green's work, and deduce various representation theoretic results from these results. Applications include finding certain sums of character degrees, and a model of Deligne-Lusztig type for the finite unitary group, which parallels results of Klyachko and Inglis and Saxl for the finite general linear group.
Conjugacy in Permutation Representations of the Symmetric Group

Although the conjugacy classes of the general linear group are known, it is not obvious (from the canonic form of matrices) that two permutation matrices are similar if and only if they are conjugate as permutations in the symmetric group, i.e. that conjugacy classes of S_n do not unite under the natural representation. We prove this fact, and give its application to the enumeration of fixed points under a natural action of S_n x S_n. We also consider the permutation representations of S_n which arise from the action of S_n on k-tuples, and classify which of them unite conjugacy classes and which do not.

We focus on derangement characters of $GL(n,q)$ which depend solely on the dimension of the space of fixed vectors. This family includes Thoma characters which become asymptotically irreducible as $n\to\infty$. We find explicit decomposition of Thoma characters into irreducibles, construct further derangement characters and seek for extremes in the family of derangement characters.

Let $Ω$ be a vector space over a finite field with q elements. Let G denote the general linear group of endomorphisms of $Ω$ and let us consider the left regular representation $ρ: G \to B(L_2(X))$ associated to the natural action of G on the set X of linear subspaces of $Ω$. In this paper we study a natural basis B of the algebra $End_{G}(L_2(X))$ of intertwining maps on $L_2(X)$. By using a Laplacian operator on Grassmann graphs, we identify the kernels in B as solutions of a basic hypergeometric difference equation. This provides two expressions for these kernels. One in terms of the q-Hahn polynomials and the other by means of a Rodrigues type formula. Finally, we obtain a useful product formula for the mappings in B. We give two different proofs. One uses the theory of classical hypergeometric polynomials and the other is supported by a characterization of spherical functions in finite symmetric spaces. Both proofs require the use of certain associated Radon transforms.

A straightening algorithm for row-convex tableaux

We produce a new basis for the Schur and Weyl modules associated to a row-convex shape, D. The basis is indexed by new class of "straight" tableaux which we introduce by weakening the usual requirements for standard tableaux. Spanning is proved via a new straightening algorithm for expanding elements of the representation into this basis. For skew shapes, this algorithm specializes to the classical straightening law. The new straight basis is used to produce bases for flagged Schur and Weyl modules, to provide Groebner and sagbi bases for the homogeneous coordinate rings of some configuration varieties and to produce a flagged branching rule for row-convex representations. Systematic use of supersymmetric letterplace techniques enables the representation theoretic results to be applied to representations of the general linear Lie superalgebra as well as to the general linear group.

A bijection is defined from Littlewood-Richardson tableaux to rigged configurations. It is shown that this map preserves the appropriate statistics, thereby proving a quasi-particle expression for the generalized Kostka polynomials, which are q-analogues of multiplicities in tensor products of irreducible general linear group modules indexed by rectangular partitions.

Let k be a field of characteristic zero. We consider graded subalgebras A of k[x_1,...,x_m]/(x_1^2,...,x_m^2) generated by d linearly independant linear forms. Representations of matroids over k provide a natural description of the structure of these algebras. In return, the numerical properties of the Hilbert function of A yield some information about the Tutte polynomial of the corresponding matroid. Isomorphism classes of these algebras correspond to equivalence classes of hyperplane arrangements under the action of the general linear group.
