Within the framework of the search for the still unknown exact value of the real and complex Grothendieck constant $K_G^\mathbb{F}$ in the famous Grothendieck inequality (unsolved since 1953), where $\mathbb{F}$ denotes either the real or the complex field, we concentrate our search on their smallest upper bound. To this end, we establish a basic framework, built on functions which map correlation matrices to correlation matrices entrywise by means of the Hadamard product, such as the Krivine function in the real case or the Haagerup function in the complex case. By making use of multivariate real and complex Gaussian analysis, higher transcendental functions, integration over spheres and combinatorics of the inversion of Maclaurin series, we provide an approach by which we also recover all famous upper bounds of Grothendieck himself ($K_G^\mathbb{R} \leq \sinh(π/2) \approx 2.301$), Krivine ($K_G^\mathbb{R} \leq \fracπ{2 \ln(1 + \sqrt{2})} \approx 1,782$) and Haagerup ($K_G^\mathbb{C} \leq 1.405$, numerically approximated); each of them as a special case. In doing so, we aim to unify the real and complex case as much as possible and apply our results to several concrete examples, including the Walsh-Hadamard transform (''quantum gate'') and the multivariate Gaussian copula - with foundations of quantum theory and quantum information theory in mind. Moreover, we offer a shortening and a simplification of the proof of the strongest estimation until now; namely that $K_G^\mathbb{R} < \fracπ{2 \ln(1 + \sqrt{2})}$. We summarise our key results in form of an algorithmic scheme and shed light on related open problems and topics for future research.
Binomial convolutions for rational power series

The binomial convolution of two sequences $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ is the sequence whose $n$th term is $\sum_{k=0}^{n} \binom{n}{k} a_k b_{n-k}$. If $\{a_n\}$ and $\{b_n\}$ have rational generating functions then so does their binomial convolution. We discuss an efficient method, using resultants, for computing this rational generating function and give several examples involving Fibonacci and tribonacci numbers and related sequences. We then describe a similar method for computing Hadamard products of rational generating functions. Finally we describe two additional methods for computing binomial convolutions and Hadamard products of rational power series, one using symmetric functions and one using partial fractions.

In this paper we address the question if, for points $P, Q \in \mathbb{P}^{2}$, $I(P)^{m} \star I(Q)^{n}=I(P \star Q)^{m+n-1}$ and we obtain different results according to the number of zero coordinates in $P$ and $Q$. Successively, we use our results to define the so called Hadamard fat grids, which are the result of the Hadamard product of two sets of collinear points with given multiplicities. The most important invariants of Hadamard fat grids, as minimal resolution, Waldschmidt constant and resurgence, are then computed.

In this paper, we first introduce the unlacing of Hurwitz series, which can be viewed as an inverse of interlacing, and develop the basic properties of unlacing, interlacing and integral of Hurwitz series. We then show that the multiplication of interlacing of Hurwitz series by basis elements can be also rewritten as an interlacing, and provide the explicit multiplication formula in terms of integrals and Hadamard products. Finally, we investigate the natural exponential function $\exp$, and realize the method of reduction of order in the ring of Hurwitz series by using $\exp$.

We present a preliminary study of Schur norms $\|M\|_{S}=\max\{ \|M\circ C\|: \|C\|=1\}$, where M is a matrix whose entries are $\pm1$, and $\circ$ denotes the entrywise (i.e., Schur or Hadamard) product of the matrices. We show that, if such a matrix M is n-by-n, then its Schur norm is bounded by $\sqrt{n}$, and equality holds if and only if it is a Hadamard matrix. We develop a numerically efficient method of computing Schur norms, and as an application of our results we present several almost Hadamard matrices that are better than were previously known.
Moments, Sums of Squares, and Tropicalization

We use tropicalization to study the duals to cones of nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares on a semialgebraic set $S$. The truncated cones of moments of measures supported on the set $S$ is dual to nonnegative polynomials on $S$, while "pseudo-moments" are dual to sums of squares approximations to nonnegative polynomials. We provide explicit combinatorial descriptions of tropicalizations of the moment and pseudo-moment cones, and demonstrate their usefulness in distinguishing between nonnegative polynomials and sums of squares. We give examples that show new limitations of sums of squares approximations of nonnegative polynomials. When the semialgebraic set is defined by binomial inequalites, its moment and pseudo-moment cones are closed under Hadamard product. In this case, their tropicalizations are polyhedral cones that encode all binomial inequalities on the moment and pseudo-moment cones.
Geometry of logarithmic derivations of hyperplane arrangements

We study the Hadamard product of the linear forms defining a hyperplane arrangement with those of its dual, which we view as generating an ideal in a certain polynomial ring. We use this ideal, which we call the ideal of pairs, to study logarithmic derivations and critical set varieties of arrangements in a way which is symmetric with respect to matroid duality. Our main result exhibits the variety of the ideal of pairs as a subspace arrangement whose components correspond to cyclic flats of the arrangement. As a corollary, we are able to give geometric explanations of some freeness and projective dimension results due to Ziegler and Kung--Schenck.

We show that the numerators of genus zeta function associated with local hereditary orders studied by Denert can be described in terms of the joint distribution of Euler-Mahonian statistics on multiset permutations defined by Han. We use this result to deduce a reciprocity property for genus zeta functions of local hereditary orders whose associated composition is a rectangle. We also record a remarkable identity satisfied by genus zeta functions of local hereditary orders in terms of Hadamard products of genus zeta functions of maximal orders. Finally, we define Mahonian companions of excedance statistics on groups of signed and even-signed permutations.
A simple counterexample for the permanent-on-top conjecture

The permanent-on-top conjecture states that the largest eigenvalue of the Schur power matrix of a positive semi-definite Hermitian matrix H is per(H). A counterexample has been found with the help of computers, but here, I present another counterexample that can be checked by hand. My method is to use linear representations of groups to connect the spectrum of the Schur power matrix with the spectra of the entrywise(Hadamard) product matrices of permanental compound matrices. By that, we are able to study the properties of the spectrum of the Schur power matrix through the entrywise(Hadamard) product matrices of permanental compound matrices. The counterexample we find is in fact also a counterexample to a weaker conjecture related to permanental compound matrices. This conjecture was also known to be false, but the new counterexample is smaller than the known one.

We characterize the combinatorial types of symmetric frameworks in the plane that are minimally generically symmetry-forced infinitesimally rigid when the symmetry group consists of rotations and translations. Along the way, we use tropical geometry to show how a construction of Edmonds that associates a matroid to a submodular function can be used to give a description of the algebraic matroid of a Hadamard product of two linear spaces in terms of the matroids of each linear space. This leads to new, short, proofs of Laman's theorem, and a theorem of Jord{á}n, Kaszanitzky, and Tanigawa, and Malestein and Theran characterizing the minimally generically symmetry-forced rigid graphs in the plane when the symmetry group contains only rotations.
Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials.
We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting.
The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce.
In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.
Characterizations of the Borel triangle and Borel polynomials
We use Riordan array theory to give characterizations of the Borel triangle and its associated polynomial sequence. We show that the Borel polynomials are the moment sequence for a family of orthogonal polynomials whose coefficient array is a Riordan array. The role of the Catalan matrix in defining the Borel triangle is examined. We generalize the Borel triangle to a family of two parameter triangles. Generating functions are expressed as Jacobi continued fractions, as well as the zeros of appropriate quadratic expressions. The Borel triangle is exhibited as a Hadamard product of matrices. We investigate the reversions of the triangles studied. We introduce the notion of Fuss-Borel triangles and Fuss-Catalan triangles. We end with some remarks on the Catalan triangle.

In this paper the approach to obtaining nonrecurrent formulas for some recursively defined sequences is illustrated. The most interesting result in the paper is the formula for the solution of quadratic map-like recurrence. Also, some formulas for the solutions of linear difference equations with variable coefficients are obtained. At the end of the paper, some integer sequences associated with a quadratic map are considered.

It is demonstrated how an explicit expression of the (partial) sum of Tetranacci numbers can be found and proved using generating functions and the Hadamard product. We also provide a Binet-type formula for generalized Fibonacci numbers, by explicitly factoring the denominator of their generating functions.
A Short Note on Integral Transformations and Conversion Formulas for Sequence Generating Functions

The purpose of this note is to provide an expository introduction to some more curious integral formulas and transformations involving generating functions. We seek to generalize these results and integral representations which effectively provide a mechanism for converting between a sequence's ordinary and exponential generating function (OGF and EGF, respectively) and vice versa. The Laplace transform provides an integral formula for the EGF-to-OGF transformation, where the reverse OGF-to-EGF operation requires more careful integration techniques. We prove two variants of the OGF-to-EGF transformation integrals from the Hankel loop contour for the reciprocal gamma function and from Fourier series expansions of integral representations for the Hadamard product of two generating functions, respectively. We also suggest several generalizations of these integral formulas and provide new examples along the way.

We show that, for Hankel matrices, total nonnegativity (resp. total positivity) of order r is preserved by sum, Hadamard product, and Hadamard power with real exponent t \ge r-2. We give examples to show that our results are sharp relative to matrix size and structure (general, symmetric or Hankel). Some of these examples also resolve the Hadamard critical-exponent problem for totally positive and totally nonnegative matrices.

We review and update on a few conjectures concerning matrix permanent that are easily stated, understood, and accessible to general math audience. They are: Soules permanent-on-top conjecture${}^\dagger$, Lieb permanent dominance conjecture, Bapat and Sunder conjecture${}^\dagger$ on Hadamard product and diagonal entries, Chollet conjecture on Hadamard product, Marcus conjecture on permanent of permanents, and several other conjectures. Some of these conjectures are recently settled; some are still open. We also raise a few new questions for future study. (${}^\dagger$conjectures have been recently settled negatively.)
On the singularity of adjacency matrices for random regular digraphs

We prove that the (non-symmetric) adjacency matrix of a uniform random $d$-regular directed graph on $n$ vertices is asymptotically almost surely invertible, assuming $\min(d,n-d)\ge C\log^2n$ for a sufficiently large constant $C>0$. The proof makes use of a coupling of random regular digraphs formed by "shuffling" the neighborhood of a pair of vertices, as well as concentration results for the distribution of edges recently obtained by the author (arXiv:1410.5595). We also apply our general approach to prove a.a.s.\ invertibility of Hadamard products $Σ\circ Ξ$, where $Ξ$ is a matrix of iid uniform $\pm1$ signs, and $Σ$ is a 0/1 matrix whose associated digraph satisfies certain "expansion" properties.
On the Hadamard product of Hopf monoids

Combinatorial structures which compose and decompose give rise to Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. The Hadamard product of two Hopf monoids is another Hopf monoid. We prove two main results regarding freeness of Hadamard products. The first one states that if one factor is connected and the other is free as a monoid, their Hadamard product is free (and connected). The second provides an explicit basis for the Hadamard product when both factors are free.
The first main result is obtained by showing the existence of a one-parameter deformation of the comonoid structure and appealing to a rigidity result of Loday and Ronco which applies when the parameter is set to zero. To obtain the second result, we introduce an operation on species which is intertwined by the free monoid functor with the Hadamard product. As an application of the first result, we deduce that the dimension sequence of a connected Hopf monoid satisfies the following condition: except for the first, all coefficients of the reciprocal of its generating function are nonpositive.
Hopf monoids from class functions on unitriangular matrices

We build, from the collection of all groups of unitriangular matrices, Hopf monoids in Joyal's category of species. Such structure is carried by the collection of class function spaces on those groups, and also by the collection of superclass function spaces, in the sense of Diaconis and Isaacs. Superclasses of unitriangular matrices admit a simple description from which we deduce a combinatorial model for the Hopf monoid of superclass functions, in terms of the Hadamard product of the Hopf monoids of linear orders and of set partitions. This implies a recent result relating the Hopf algebra of superclass functions on unitriangular matrices to symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We determine the algebraic structure of the Hopf monoid: it is a free monoid in species, with the canonical Hopf structure. As an application, we derive certain estimates on the number of conjugacy classes of unitriangular matrices.
