Consider Kashiwara's crystal associated to a highest weight representation of a symmetric Kac-Moody algebra. There is a geometric realization of this object using Nakajima's quiver varieties, but in many particular cases it can also be realized by elementary combinatorial methods. Here we propose a framework for extracting combinatorial realizations from the geometric picture: We construct certain torus actions on the quiver varieties and use Morse theory to index the irreducible components by connected components of the subvariety of torus fixed points. We then discuss the case of affine sl(n). There the fixed point components are just points, and are naturally indexed by multi-partitions. There is some choice in our construction, leading to a family of combinatorial models for each highest weight crystal. Applying this construction to the crystal of the fundamental representation recovers a family of combinatorial realizations recently constructed by Fayers. This gives a more conceptual proof of Fayers' result as well as a generalization to higher level. We also discuss a relationship with Nakajima's monomial crystal.

The classical Gindikin-Karpelevich formula appears in Langlands' calculation of the constant terms of Eisenstein series on reductive groups and in Macdonald's work on p-adic groups and affine Hecke algebras. The formula has been generalized in the work of Garland to the affine Kac-Moody case, and the affine case has been geometrically constructed in a recent paper of Braverman, Finkelberg, and Kazhdan. On the other hand, there have been efforts to write the formula as a sum over Kashiwara's crystal basis or Lusztig's canonical basis, initiated by Brubaker, Bump, and Friedberg. In this paper, we write the affine Gindikin-Karpelevich formula as a sum over the crystal of generalized Young walls when the underlying Kac-Moody algebra is of affine type A_n^(1). The coefficients of the terms in the sum are determined explicitly by the combinatorial data from Young walls.

We give a realization of the infinity crystal for affine sl(2) using decorated polygons. The construction and proof are combinatorial, making use of Kashiwara and Saito's characterization of the infinity crystal in terms of the * involution. The polygons we use have combinatorial properties suggesting they are the analogues in this case of the Mirkovic-Vilonen polytopes defined by Anderson and the third author in finite type. Using Kashiwara's similarity of crystals we also give MV polytopes for $A_2^{(2)}$, the only other rank two affine Kac-Moody algebra.

We consider integrable, category O-modules of indecomposable symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. We prove that unique factorization of tensor products of irreducible modules holds in this category, upto twisting by one dimensional modules. This generalizes a fundamental theorem of Rajan for finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over C. Our proof is new even for the finite dimensional case, and uses an interplay of representation theory and combinatorics to analyze the Kac-Weyl character formula.

We show that Joseph-Lamprou's path model for representations of generalized Kac-Moody algebras can be embedded into Littelmann's path model for certain Kac-Moody algebras. Using this embedding, for Joseph-Lamprou's path crystals, we give a decomposition rule for tensor product and a branching rule for restriction to Levi subalgebras. Also, we obtain a characterization of standard paths in terms of a certain monoid, which can be thought of as a generalization of a Coxeter group.

Generalized Galois numbers count the number of flags in vector spaces over finite fields. Asymptotically, as the dimension of the vector space becomes large, we give their exponential growth and determine their initial values. The initial values are expressed analytically in terms of theta functions and Euler's generating function for the partition numbers. Our asymptotic enumeration method is based on a Demazure module limit construction for integrable highest weight representations of affine Kac-Moody algebras. For the classical Galois numbers, that count the number of subspaces in vector spaces over finite fields, the theta functions are Jacobi theta functions. We apply our findings to the asymptotic number of q-ary codes, and conclude with some final remarks about possible future research concerning asymptotic enumerations via limit constructions for affine Kac-Moody algebras.

We define and study the category $\RepQ$ of representations of a quiver in $\VFun$ - the category of vector spaces "over $\Fun$". $\RepQ$ is an $\Fun$-linear category possessing kernels, co-kernels, and direct sums. Moreover, $\RepQ$ satisfies analogues of the Jordan-Hölder and Krull-Schmidt theorems. We are thus able to define the Hall algebra $\HQ$ of $\RepQ$, which behaves in some ways like the specialization at $q=1$ of the Hall algebra of $\on{Rep}(\Q, \mathbf{F}_q)$. We prove the existence of a Hopf algebra homomorphism of $ ρ': \U(\n_+) \rightarrow \HQ$, from the enveloping algebra of the nilpotent part $\n_+$ of the Kac-Moody algebra with Dynkin diagram $\bar{\Q}$ - the underlying unoriented graph of $\Q$. We study $ρ'$ when $\Q$ is the Jordan quiver, a quiver of type $A$, the cyclic quiver, and a tree respectively.

We introduce the notion of a chopped and sliced cone in combinatorial geometry and prove two structure theorems for the number of integral points in the individual slices of such a cone. We observe that this notion applies to weight multiplicities of Kac-Moody algebras and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients of semisimple Lie algebras, where we obtain the corresponding results.

We adapt and refine methods developed by Abramenko and Devillers--Köhl--Mühlherr in order to establish the sphericity of the Phan geometries of type B_n and C_n, and their generalizations. As an application we determine the finiteness length of the unitary form of certain hyperbolic Kac--Moody groups. We also reproduce the finiteness length of the unitary form of the groups Sp_{2n}(GF(q^2)[t,t^{-1}]). Another application is the first published proof of the Phan-type theorem of type F_4. Within the revision of the classification of the finite simple groups this concludes the revision of Phan's theorems and their extension to the non-simply laced diagrams. We also reproduce the Phan-type theorems of types B_n and C_n.
The numbers game and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain "amplitudes" assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. Combinatorial reasoning is used to show that those connected graphs with negative integer amplitudes for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. This strengthens a result originally due to the second author. A more general result is obtained when certain real number amplitudes are allowed. The resulting graphs are in families, each family corresponding to a finite irreducible Coxeter group. These results are used to demonstrate that the only generalized Cartan matrices for which there exist finite edge-colored ranked posets enjoying a certain structure property are the Cartan matrices for the finite-dimensional complex semisimple Lie algebras. In this setting, classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac--Moody algebras and of the finite Coxeter and Weyl groups are re-derived.
Tensor factorization and Spin construction for Kac-Moody algebras

In this paper we discuss the "Factorization phenomenon" which occurs when a representation of a Lie algebra is restricted to a subalgebra, and the result factors into a tensor product of smaller representations of the subalgebra. We analyze this phenomenon for symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras (including finite-dimensional, semi-simple Lie algebras). We present a few factorization results for a general embedding of a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra into another and provide an algebraic explanation for such a phenomenon using Spin construction. We also give some application of these results for semi-simple finite dimensional Lie algebras.
We extend the notion of Spin functor from finite-dimensional to symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras, which requires a very delicate treatment. We introduce a certain category of orthogonal $\g$-representations for which, surprisingly, the Spin functor gives a $\g$-representation in Bernstein-Gelfand-Gelfand category $Ø$. Also, for an integrable representation $\Spin$ produces an integrable representation. We give the formula for the character of Spin representation for the above category and work out the factorization results for an embedding of a finite dimensional semi-simple Lie algebra into its untwisted affine Lie algebra. Finally, we discuss classification of those representations for which $\Spin$ is irreducible.
Dual graded graphs for Kac-Moody algebras

Motivated by affine Schubert calculus, we construct a family of dual graded graphs $(Γ_s,Γ_w)$ for an arbitrary Kac-Moody algebra $\g(A)$. The graded graphs have the Weyl group $W$ of $\g(A)$ as vertex set and are labeled versions of the strong and weak orders of $W$ respectively. Using a construction of Lusztig for quivers with an admissible automorphism, we define folded insertion for a Kac-Moody algebra and obtain Sagan-Worley shifted insertion from Robinson-Schensted insertion as a special case. Drawing on work of Stembridge, we analyze the induced subgraphs of $(Γ_s,Γ_w)$ which are distributive posets.
On the structure of regular $B_2$-type crystals
For simply-laced Kac-Moody algebras $\frak g$, Stembridge (2003) proposed a `local' axiomatization of crystal graphs of representations of $U_q(\frak g)$. In this paper we propose axioms for edge-2-colored graphs which characterize the crystals of integrable representations of $U_q(sp(4))$, regular crystal graphs of $B_2$-type. An edge-colored directed graph which obeys our Axioms (K0)--(K5) is called an R-{\em graph} (for brevity), and our main result is that the regular crystals of $B_2$-type are R-graphs and vice versa. We give a direct combinatorial construction for the crystals in question. On this way we introduce a new, so-called {\em crossing model}, which does not exploit Young tableaux. This combinatorial model consists of a two-component graph of a rather simple form and of a certain set of integer-valued functions on its vertices.
The numbers game, geometric representations of Coxeter groups, and Dynkin diagram classification results
The numbers game is a one-player game played on a finite simple graph with certain ``amplitudes'' assigned to its edges and with an initial assignment of real numbers to its nodes. The moves of the game successively transform the numbers at the nodes using the amplitudes in a certain way. This game has been studied previously by Proctor, Mozes, Bjorner, Eriksson, and Wildberger. We show that those connected such graphs for which the numbers game meets a certain finiteness requirement are precisely the Dynkin diagrams associated with the finite-dimensional complex simple Lie algebras. As a consequence of our proof we obtain the classifications of the finite-dimensional Kac-Moody algebras and of the finite Weyl groups. We use Coxeter group theory to establish a more general result that applies to Eriksson's E-games: an E-game meets the finiteness requirement if and only if a naturally associated Coxeter group is finite. To prove this and some other finiteness results we further develop Eriksson's theory of a geometric representation of Coxeter groups and observe some curious differences of this representation from the standard geometric representation.
Full heaps and representations of affine Weyl groups
We use the author's combinatorial theory of full heaps (defined in math.QA/0605768) to categorify the action of a large class of Weyl groups on their root systems, and thus to give an elementary and uniform construction of a family of faithful permutation representations of Weyl groups. Examples include the standard representations of affine Weyl groups as permutations of ${\Bbb Z}$ and geometrical examples such as the realization of the Weyl group of type $E_6$ as permutations of 27 lines on a cubic surface; in the latter case, we also show how to recover the incidence relations between the lines from the structure of the heap. Another class of examples involves the action of certain Weyl groups on sets of pairs $(t, f)$, where $t \in {\Bbb Z}$ and $f$ is a function from a suitably chosen set to the two-element set $\{+, -\}$. Each of the permutation representations corresponds to a module for a Kac--Moody algebra, and gives an explicit basis for it.
Full heaps and representations of affine Kac--Moody algebras
We give a combinatorial construction, not involving a presentation, of almost all untwisted affine Kac--Moody algebras modulo their one-dimensional centres in terms of signed raising and lowering operators on a certain distributive lattice ${\Cal B}$. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is constructed combinatorially as a set of ideals of a ``full heap'' over the Dynkin diagram, which leads to a kind of categorification of the positive roots for the Kac--Moody algebra. The lattice ${\Cal B}$ is also a crystal in the sense of Kashiwara, and its span affords representations of the associated quantum affine algebra and affine Weyl group. There are analogues of these results for two infinite families of twisted affine Kac--Moody algebras, which we hope to treat more fully elsewhere.
By restriction, we obtain combinatorial constructions of the finite dimensional simple Lie algebras over $\complex$, except those of types $E_8$, $F_4$ and $G_2$. The Chevalley basis corresponding to an arbitrary orientation of the Dynkin diagram is then represented explicitly by raising and lowering operators. We also obtain combinatorial constructions of the spin modules for Lie algebras of types $B$ and $D$, which avoid Clifford algebras, and in which the action of Chevalley bases on the canonical bases of the modules may be explicitly calculated.
Dynkin diagram sequences and stabilization phenomena

We continue the study of stabilization phenomena for Dynkin diagram sequences initiated in the earlier work of Kleber and the present author. We consider a more general class of sequences than that of this earlier work, and isolate a condition on the weights that gives stabilization of tensor product and branching multiplicities. We show that all the results of the previous article can be naturally generalized to this setting. We also prove some properties of the partially ordered set of dominant weights of indefinite Kac-Moody algebras, and use this to give a more concrete definition of a stable representation ring. Finally, we consider the classical sequences $B_n, C_n, D_n$ that fall outside the purview of the earlier work, and work out some simple conditions on the weights which imply stabilization.

To any moment graph G we assign a subcategory V of the category of sheaves on G together with an exact structure. We show that in the case that the graph is associated to a non-critical block of the equivariant category O over a symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebra, V is equivalent (as an exact category) to the subcategory of modules that admit a Verma flag. The projective modules correspond under this equivalence to the intersection cohomology sheaves on the graph.

We present a simple combinatorial model for the characters of the irreducible integrable highest weight modules for complex symmetrizable Kac-Moody algebras. This model can be viewed as a discrete counterpart to the Littelmann path model. We describe crystal graphs and give a Littlewood-Richardson rule for decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations. The new model is based on the notion of a lambda-chain, which is a chain of positive roots defined by certain interlacing conditions.

The X=M conjecture of Hatayama et al. asserts the equality between the one-dimensional configuration sum X expressed as the generating function of crystal paths with energy statistics and the fermionic formula M for all affine Kac--Moody algebra. In this paper we prove the X=M conjecture for tensor products of Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals B^{1,s} associated to symmetric powers for all nonexceptional affine algebras.
