Skew key polynomials and a generalized Littlewood-Richardson rule
Published • View Publication • BIB
Young's lattice is a partial order on integer partitions whose saturated chains correspond to standard Young tableaux, one type of combinatorial object that generates the Schur basis for symmetric functions. Generalizing Young's lattice, we introduce a new partial order on weak compositions that we call the key poset. Saturated chains in this poset correspond to standard key tableaux, the combinatorial objects that generate the key polynomials, a nonsymmetric polynomial generalization of the Schur basis. Generalizing skew Schur functions, we define skew key polynomials in terms of this new poset. Using weak dual equivalence, we give a nonnegative weak composition Littlewood-Richardson rule for the key expansion of skew key polynomials, generalizing the flagged Littlewood-Richardson rule of Reiner and Shimozono.

Ehrhart positivity and Demazure characters
Published in Algebraic and Geometric Combinatorics on Lattice Polytopes, pp. 56-71 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
Demazure characters, also known as key polynomials, generalize the classical Schur polynomials. In particular, when all variables are set equal to $1$, these polynomials count the number of integer points in a certain class of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes. This property highlights the interaction between the corresponding polyhedral and combinatorial structures via Ehrhart theory. In this paper, we give an overview of results concerning the interplay between the geometry of Gelfand-Tsetlin polytopes and their Ehrhart polynomials. Motivated by strong computer evidence, we propose several conjectures about the non-negativity of the coefficients of such polynomials.

Decomposition of tensor products of Demazure crystals
Published • View Publication • BIB
A Demazure crystal is the basis at $q=0$ of a Demazure module. Demazure crystals play an important role in Schubert calculus because the character of a Demazure crystal in type A is identical to a key polynomial, which is closely related to Schubert polynomials. In this paper, we study tensor products of Demazure crystals. Each connected component of a tensor product of Demazure crystals need not be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for every connected component of a tensor product to be isomorphic to some Demazure crystal. Also, we obtain the explicit formula for connected components. As applications, we study the positivity for structure constants of products of key polynomials, and we obtain an equation of crystals, which is an analog of the Leibniz rule for Demazure operators.

Properties of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials at $q=1$ and $q=0$
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 23, No.2, 219--239 (2019) • View Publication • BIB
We examine the non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials $E_λ(x;q,t)$ at $q=1$, as well as the more general permuted-basement Macdonald polynomials. When $q=1$, we show that $E_λ(x;1,t)$ is symmetric and independent of $t$ whenever $λ$ is a partition. Furthermore, we show that for general $λ$, this expression factors into a symmetric and a non-symmetric part, where the symmetric part is independent of $t$, while the non-symmetric part only depends on the relative order of the entries in $λ$. We also examine the case $q=0$, which give rise to so called permuted-basement $t$-atoms. We prove expansion-properties of these, and as a corollary, prove that Demazure characters (key polynomials) expand positively into permuted-basement atoms. This complements the result that permuted-basement atoms are atom-positive. Finally, we show that a product of a permuted-basement atom and a Schur polynomial is again positive in the same permuted-basement atom basis, and thus interpolates between two results by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg. The common theme in this project is the application of basement-permuting operators as well as combinatorics on fillings, by applying results in a previous article by the first author.

Schubert polynomials as integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra
Published • View Publication • BIB
We show that the dual character of the flagged Weyl module of any diagram is a positively weighted integer point transform of a generalized permutahedron. In particular, Schubert and key polynomials are positively weighted integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra. This implies several recent conjectures of Monical, Tokcan and Yong.

Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions and their appearances as type A Demazure characters (key polynomials)

Fix an integer partition lambda that has no more than n parts. Let beta be a weakly increasing n-tuple with entries from {1,..,n}. The flagged Schur function indexed by lambda and beta is a polynomial generating function in x_1, .., x_n for certain semistandard tableaux of shape lambda. Let pi be an n-permutation. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial, Demazure polynomial) indexed by lambda and pi is another such polynomial generating function. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley studied coincidences between these two families of polynomials. Here their results are sharpened by the specification of unique representatives for the equivalence classes of indexes for both families of polynomials, extended by the consideration of more general beta, and deepened by proving that the polynomial coincidences also hold at the level of the underlying tableau sets. Let R be the set of lengths of columns in the shape of lambda that are less than n. Ordered set partitions of {1,..,n} with block sizes determined by R, called R-permutations, are used to describe the minimal length representatives for the parabolic quotient of the nth symmetric group specified by the set {1,..,n-1}\R. The notion of 312-avoidance is generalized from n-permutations to these set partitions. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of these. Every flagged Schur function arises as a Demazure polynomial. Those Demazure polynomials are precisely indexed by the R-312-avoiding R-permutations. Hence the number of flagged Schur functions that are distinct as polynomials is shown to be the R-parabolic Catalan number. The projecting and lifting processes that relate the notions of 312-avoidance and of R-312-avoidance are described with maps developed for other purposes.

Convexity of tableau sets for type A Demazure characters (key polynomials), parabolic Catalan numbers
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 20 no. 2, Combinatorics (August 16, 2018) dmtcs:4158 • View Publication • BIB
This is the first of three papers that develop structures which are counted by a "parabolic" generalization of Catalan numbers. Fix a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Consider the ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes are determined by R. These are the "inverses" of (parabolic) multipermutations whose multiplicities are determined by R. The standard forms of the ordered partitions are refered to as "R-permutations". The notion of 312-avoidance is extended from permutations to R-permutations. Let lambda be a partition of N such that the set of column lengths in its shape is R or R union {n}. Fix an R-permutation pi. The type A Demazure character (key polynomial) in x_1, .., x_n that is indexed by lambda and pi can be described as the sum of the weight monomials for some of the semistandard Young tableau of shape lambda that are used to describe the Schur function indexed by lambda. Descriptions of these "Demazure" tableaux developed by the authors in earlier papers are used to prove that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is R-312-avoiding if and only if the tableau set is the entire principal ideal generated by the key of pi. These papers were inspired by results of Reiner and Shimozono and by Postnikov and Stanley concerning coincidences between Demazure characters and flagged Schur functions. This convexity result is used in the next paper to deepen those results from the level of polynomials to the level of tableau sets. The R-parabolic Catalan number is defined to be the number of R-312-avoiding permutations. These special R-permutations are reformulated as "R-rightmost clump deleting" chains of subsets of {1,..,n} and as "gapless R-tuples"; the latter n-tuples arise in multiple contexts in these papers.

A major-index preserving map on fillings
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 24, No.4, 2017 • View Publication • BIB
We generalize a map by S. Mason regarding two combinatorial models for key polynomials, in a way that accounts for the major index. We also define similar variants of this map, that regards alternative models for the modified Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$, thus partially answer a question by J. Haglund. These maps imply certain uniqueness property regarding inversion-- and coinversion-free fillings, which allows us to generalize the notion of charge to a non-symmetric setting, thus answering a question by A. Lascoux. The analogous question in the symmetric setting proves a conjecture by K. Nelson.

Newton Polytopes in Algebraic Combinatorics
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 25 (2019), no. 5, Art. 66, 37 pp • View Publication • BIB
A polynomial has saturated Newton polytope (SNP) if every lattice point of the convex hull of its exponent vectors corresponds to a monomial. We compile instances of SNP in algebraic combinatorics (some with proofs, others conjecturally): skew Schur polynomials; symmetric polynomials associated to reduced words, Redfield--Polya theory, Witt vectors, and totally nonnegative matrices; resultants; discriminants (up to quartics); Macdonald polynomials; key polynomials; Demazure atoms; Schubert polynomials; and Grothendieck polynomials, among others. Our principal construction is the Schubitope. For any subset of [n] x [n], we describe it by linear inequalities. This generalized permutahedron conjecturally has positive Ehrhart polynomial. We conjecture it describes the Newton polytope of Schubert and key polynomials. We also define dominance order on permutations and study its poset-theoretic properties.

Combinatorial models for Schubert polynomials
Schubert polynomials are a basis for the polynomial ring that represent Schubert classes for the flag manifold. In this paper, we introduce and develop several new combinatorial models for Schubert polynomials that relate them to other known bases including key polynomials and fundamental slide polynomials. We unify these and existing models by giving simple bijections between the combinatorial objects indexing each. In particular, we give a simple bijective proof that the balanced tableaux of Edelman and Greene enumerate reduced expressions and a direct combinatorial proof of Kohnert's algorithm for computing Schubert polynomials. Further, we generalize the insertion algorithm of Edelman and Greene to give a bijection between reduced expressions and pairs of tableaux of the same key diagram shape and use this to give a simple formula, directly in terms of reduced expressions, for the key polynomial expansion of a Schubert polynomial.

Weak dual equivalence for polynomials
Published • View Publication • BIB
We use dual equivalence to give a short, combinatorial proof that Stanley symmetric functions are Schur positive. We introduce weak dual equivalence, and use it to give a short, combinatorial proof that Schubert polynomials are key positive. To demonstrate further the utility of this new tool, we use weak dual equivalence to prove a nonnegative Littlewood--Richardson rule for the key expansion of the product of a key polynomial and a Schur polynomial, and to introduce skew key polynomials that, when skewed by a partition, expand nonnegatively in the key basis.

Row bounds needed to justifiably express flagged Schur functions with Gessel-Viennot determinants
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 23 no. 1, Combinatorics (April 23, 2021) dmtcs:6632 • View Publication • BIB
Let $λ$ be a partition with no more than $n$ parts. Let $β$ be a weakly increasing $n$-tuple with entries from $\{ 1, ... , n \}$. The flagged Schur function in the variables $x_1, ... , x_n$ that is indexed by $λ$ and $β$ has been defined to be the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard Young tableaux of shape $λ$ whose values are row-wise bounded by the entries of $β$. Gessel and Viennot gave a determinant expression for the flagged Schur function indexed by $λ$ and $β$; this could be done since the pair $(λ, β)$ satisfied their "nonpermutable" condition for the sequence of terminals of an $n$-tuple of lattice paths that they used to model the tableaux. We generalize flagged Schur functions by dropping the requirement that $β$ be weakly increasing. Then for each $λ$ we give a condition on the entries of $β$ for the pair $(λ, β)$ to be nonpermutable that is both necessary and sufficient. When the parts of $λ$ are not distinct there will be multiple row bound $n$-tuples $β$ that will produce the same set of tableaux. We accordingly group the bounding $β$ into equivalence classes and identify the most efficient $β$ in each class for the determinant computation. We recently showed that many other sets of objects that are indexed by $n$ and $λ$ are enumerated by the number of these efficient $n$-tuples. We called these counts "parabolic Catalan numbers". It is noted that the $GL(n)$ Demazure characters (key polynomials) indexed by 312-avoiding permutations can also be expressed with these determinants.

Parabolic Catalan numbers count flagged Schur functions; Convexity of tableau sets for Demazure characters
Shuffles are n-multipermutations with suit multiplicities given by a subset R of {1,..,n-1}. Their inverses are ordered partitions of {1,..,n} whose block sizes derive from R. These "R-permutations" depict the min length coset reps for the quotient of S_n by the parabolic subgroup W_J, with J the complement of R. We refer to those that blockwise avoid the pattern 312 as "312-avoiding R-permutations" and define the "parabolic R-Catalan number" to be the number of them. Let lambda be a partition of N with at most n parts whose set of shape column lengths less than n is R. We show that the number of flagged Schur functions formed on the shape of lambda is this parabolic R-Catalan number, and list over a dozen other phenomena that are enumerated by it. Let pi be an R-permutation. We view the Demazure character (key polynomial) indexed by (lambda,pi) as the sum of the content weight monomials for our "pi-Demazure" semistandard tableaux of shape lambda with entries from {1,..,n}. We show that the set of these tableaux is convex in Z^N if and only if pi is a 312-avoiding R-permutation. A flagged Schur function is the sum of the content weight monomials for the semistandard tableaux of shape lambda whose entries are row-wise bounded by a given weakly increasing n-tuple. We consider general row bound sums for which the bounds may be any n-tuple. Reiner and Shimozono and then Postnikov and Stanley obtained results concerning coincidences between flagged Schur functions and Demazure characters: when lambda is strict, the flagged Schur functions exactly coincide with the 312-avoiding Demazure characters. For general lambda we introduce precise indexing sets of n-tuple bounds for the row bound sums. This and our convexity results are used to sharpen their coincidence results, to extend them to general row bound sums, and to show they hold at the deeper level of coinciding underlying tableau sets.

Set-Valued Skyline Fillings
Set-valued tableaux play an important role in combinatorial $K$-theory. Separately, semistandard skyline fillings are a combinatorial model for Demazure atoms and key polynomials. We unify these two concepts by defining a set-valued extension of semistandard skyline fillings and then give analogues of results of J. Haglund, K. Luoto, S. Mason, and S. van Willigenberg. Additionally, we give a bijection between set-valued semistandard Young tableaux and C. Lenart's Schur expansion of the Grothendieck polynomial $G_λ$, using the uncrowding operator of V. Reiner, B. Tenner, and A. Yong.

Kohnert tableaux and a lifting of quasi-Schur functions
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce the quasi-key basis of the polynomial ring. We prove this basis contains the quasi-Schur polynomials of of Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg and that stable limits of quasi-key polynomials are quasi-Schur functions, thus giving a lifting of the quasi-Schur basis of quasisymmetric polynomials to the full polynomial ring. We introduce the combinatorial model of Kohnert tableaux, and use this model to prove that key polynomials expand positively in quasi-key polynomials which in turn expand positively in the fundamental slide polynomials introduced earlier by the authors. We give simple combinatorial formulas for these expansions in terms of Kohnert tableaux, lifting the parallel expansions of a Schur function into quasi-Schur functions into fundamental quasisymmetric functions. We further utilize Kohnert tableaux to find the precise point at which the fundamental slide expansion of a key polynomial stabilizes.

Non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and Demazure-Lusztig operators
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire, 76 (2019), https://www.mat.univie.ac.at/~slc/wpapers/s76alexand.html • Search Publication
We extend the family non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and define general-basement Macdonald polynomials. We show that these also satisfy a triangularity property with respect to the monomials bases and behave well under the Demazure-Lusztig operators. The symmetric Macdonald polynomials $J_λ$ are expressed as a sum of general-basement Macdonald polynomials via an explicit formula. By letting $q=0$, we obtain $t$-deformations of key polynomials and Demazure atoms and we show that the Hall--Littlewood polynomials expand positively into these. This generalizes a result by Haglund, Luoto, Mason and van Willigenburg. As a corollary, we prove that Schur polynomials decompose with non-negative coefficients into $t$-deformations of general Demazure atoms and thus generalizing the $t=0$ case which was previously known. This gives a unified formula for the classical expansion of Schur polynomials in Hall-Littlewood polynomials and the expansion of Schur polynomials into Demazure atoms.

Accessible Proof of Standard Monomial Basis for Coordinatization of Schubert Sets of Flags
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main results of this paper are accessible with only basic linear algebra. Given an increasing sequence of dimensions, a flag in a vector space is an increasing sequence of subspaces with those dimensions. The set of all such flags (the flag manifold) can be projectively coordinatized using products of minors of a matrix. These products are indexed by tableaux on a Young diagram. A basis of "standard monomials" for the vector space generated by such projective coordinates over the entire flag manifold has long been known. A Schubert variety is a subset of flags specified by a permutation. Lakshmibai, Musili, and Seshadri gave a standard monomial basis for the smaller vector space generated by the projective coordinates restricted to a Schubert variety. Reiner and Shimozono made this theory more explicit by giving a straightening algorithm for the products of the minors in terms of the right key of a Young tableau. Since then, Willis introduced scanning tableaux as a more direct way to obtain right keys. This paper uses scanning tableaux to give more-direct proofs of the spanning and the linear independence of the standard monomials. In the appendix it is noted that this basis is a weight basis for the dual of a Demazure module for a Borel subgroup of GL(n). This paper contains a complete proof that the characters of these modules (the key polynomials) can be expressed as the sums of the weights for the tableaux used to index the standard monomial bases.

Relating the type A alcove path model to the right key of a semistandard Young tableau, with Demazure character consequences
Published in Discrete Mathematics, 339, p. 2410-2416, 2016 • Search Publication
There are several combinatorial methods that can be used to produce type A Demazure characters (key polynomials). The alcove path model of Lenart and Postnikov provides a procedure that inputs a semistandard tableau $T$ and outputs a saturated chain in the Bruhat order. The final permutation in this chain determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. Separately, the right key of $T$ introduced by Lascoux and Schützenberger also determines a family of Demazure characters for which $T$ contributes its weight. In this paper we show that the final permutation in the chain produced by the alcove model corresponds bijectively to the right key of the tableau. From this it follows that the generating sets for the Demazure characters produced by these two methods are equivalent.

Polynomials defined by tableaux and linear recurrences
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 23, No.1 2016 • View Publication • BIB
We show that several families of polynomials defined via fillings of diagrams satisfy linear recurrences under a natural operation on the shape of the diagram. We focus on key polynomials, (also known as Demazure characters), and Demazure atoms. The same technique can be applied to Hall-Littlewood polynomials and dual Grothendieck polynomials. The motivation behind this is that such recurrences are strongly connected with other nice properties, such as interpretations in terms of lattice points in polytopes and divided difference operators.

We introduce common generalization of (double) Schubert, Grothendieck, Demazure, dual and stable Grothendieck polynomials, and Di Francesco-Zinn-Justin polynomials. Our approach is based on the study of algebraic and combinatorial properties of the reduced rectangular plactic algebra and associated Cauchy kernels.
