We study the orbits of $G=\mathrm{GL}(V)$ in the enhanced nilpotent cone $V\times\mathcal{N}$, where $\mathcal{N}$ is the variety of nilpotent endomorphisms of $V$. These orbits are parametrized by bipartitions of $n=\dim V$, and we prove that the closure ordering corresponds to a natural partial order on bipartitions. Moreover, we prove that the local intersection cohomology of the orbit closures is given by certain bipartition analogues of Kostka polynomials, defined by Shoji. Finally, we make a connection with Kato's exotic nilpotent cone in type C, proving that the closure ordering is the same, and conjecturing that the intersection cohomology is the same but with degrees doubled.

We conjecture a combinatorial formula for the monomial expansion of the image of any Schur function under the Bergeron-Garsia nabla operator. The formula involves nested labeled Dyck paths weighted by area and a suitable "diagonal inversion" statistic. Our model includes as special cases many previous conjectures connecting the nabla operator to quantum lattice paths. The combinatorics of the inverse Kostka matrix leads to an elementary proof of our proposed formula when q=1. We also outline a possible approach for proving all the extant nabla conjectures that reduces everything to the construction of sign-reversing involutions on explicit collections of signed, weighted objects.
Degrees of stretched Kostka coefficients

Given a partition l and a composition b, the stretched Kostka coefficient K_{l, b}(n) is the map sending each positive integer n to the Kostka coefficient indexed by nl and nb. Kirillov and Reshetikhin (1986) have shown that stretched Kostka coefficients are polynomial functions of n. King, Tollu, and Toumazet have conjectured that these polynomials always have nonnegative coefficients (2004), and they have given a conjectural expression for their degrees (2006).
We prove the values conjectured by King, Tollu, and Toumazet for the degrees of stretched Kostka coefficients. Our proof depends upon the polyhedral geometry of Gelfand--Tsetlin polytopes and uses tilings of GT-patterns, a combinatorial structure introduced in De Loera & McAllister (2004).
Fermionic Formulas For Unrestricted Kostka Polynomials And Superconformal Characters
The problem of finding fermionic formulas for the many generalizations of Kostka polynomials and for the characters of conformal field theories has been a very exciting research topic for the last few decades. In this dissertation we present new fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials extending the work of Kirillov and Reshetikhin. We also present new fermionic formulas for the characters of N=1 and N=2 superconformal algebras which extend the work of Berkovich, McCoy and Schilling.
Fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ in the case of symmetric and anti-symmetric crystal paths were given by Hatayama et al. We present new fermionic formulas for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ for all crystal paths based on Kirillov-Reshetihkin modules. We interpret the fermionic formulas in terms of a new set of unrestricted rigged configurations.
Fermionic formulas for the N=1 and N=2 superconformal algebras are derived using the Bailey lemma by establishing new Bailey flows from the nonunitary minimal models to the superconformal models.

A new fermionic formula for the unrestricted Kostka polynomials of type $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ is presented. This formula is different from the one given by Hatayama et al. and is valid for all crystal paths based on Kirillov-Reshetihkin modules, not just for the symmetric and anti-symmetric case. The fermionic formula can be interpreted in terms of a new set of unrestricted rigged configurations. For the proof a statistics preserving bijection from this new set of unrestricted rigged configurations to the set of unrestricted crystal paths is given which generalizes a bijection of Kirillov and Reshetikhin.

Rigged configurations are combinatorial objects originating from the Bethe Ansatz, that label highest weight crystal elements. In this paper a new unrestricted set of rigged configurations is introduced for types ADE by constructing a crystal structure on the set of rigged configurations. In type A an explicit characterization of unrestricted rigged configurations is provided which leads to a new fermionic formula for unrestricted Kostka polynomials or q-supernomial coefficients. The affine crystal structure for type A is obtained as well.

We give a formula for the q-characters of arbitrary highest-weight integrable modules of sl_{r+1} as a linear combination of the fermionic q-characters of special fusion products of integrable modules. The coefficients in the sum are entries of the inverse matrix of generalized Kostka polynomials, which are in Z[q^{-1}]. In this paper we prove the relation between the character of the Feigin-Loktev graded tensor product and the generalized Kostka polynomial. We also prove the fermionic formula for the q-characters of the (unrestricted) fusion products of rectangular highest-weight integrable g-modules.
On the X=M=K Conjecture
In the large rank limit, for any nonexceptional affine algebra, the graded branching multiplicities known as one-dimensional sums, are conjectured to have a simple relationship with those of type A, which are known as generalized Kostka polynomials. This is called the X=M=K conjecture. It is proved for tensor products of the symmetric power Kirillov-Reshetikhin modules for all nonexceptional affine algebras except those whose Dynkin diagrams are isomorphic to that of untwisted affine type D near the zero node. Combined with results of Lecouvey, this realizes the above one-dimensional sums of affine type C, as affine Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials (and conjecturally for type D).
The computation of Kostka Numbers and Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients is #P-complete

Kostka numbers and Littlewood-Richardson coefficients play an essential role in the representation theory of the symmetric groups and the special linear groups. There has been a significant amount of interest in their computation. The issue of their computational complexity has been a question of folklore, but was asked explicitly by E. Rassart. We prove that the computation of either quantity is #P-complete. The reduction to computing Kostka numbers, is from the #P-complete problem of counting the number of 2 x k contingency tables having given row and column sums. The main ingredient in this reduction is a correspondence discovered by D. E. Knuth. The reduction to the problem of computing Littlewood-Richardson coefficients is from that of computing Kostka numbers.

Young tableaux are ubiquitous in various branches of mathematics. There are two counting formulas for standard Young tableaux. The first involves a determinant and goes back to Frobenius and Young, and the second is the hook formula by Frame, Robinson and Thrall. We present a generalization of the determinant formula for semistandard Young tableaux of given shape and of given content. Our counting formula -- though not a determinant -- is a generalization of the determinant formula by Frobenius and Young.

Tableaux on k+1-cores, reduced words for affine permutations, and k-Schur expansions

The $k$-Young lattice $Y^k$ is a partial order on partitions with no part larger than $k$. This weak subposet of the Young lattice originated from the study of the $k$-Schur functions(atoms) $s_λ^{(k)}$, symmetric functions that form a natural basis of the space spanned by homogeneous functions indexed by $k$-bounded partitions. The chains in the $k$-Young lattice are induced by a Pieri-type rule experimentally satisfied by the $k$-Schur functions. Here, using a natural bijection between $k$-bounded partitions and $k+1$-cores, we establish an algorithm for identifying chains in the $k$-Young lattice with certain tableaux on $k+1$ cores. This algorithm reveals that the $k$-Young lattice is isomorphic to the weak order on the quotient of the affine symmetric group $\tilde S_{k+1}$ by a maximal parabolic subgroup. From this, the conjectured $k$-Pieri rule implies that the $k$-Kostka matrix connecting the homogeneous basis $\{h_\la\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ to $\{s_\la^{(k)}\}_{\la\in\CY^k}$ may now be obtained by counting appropriate classes of tableaux on $k+1$-cores. This suggests that the conjecturally positive $k$-Schur expansion coefficients for Macdonald polynomials (reducing to $q,t$-Kostka polynomials for large $k$) could be described by a $q,t$-statistic on these tableaux, or equivalently on reduced words for affine permutations.

Egecioglu and Remmel gave an interpretation for the entries of the inverse Kostka matrix K^{-1} in terms of special rim-hook tableaux. They were able to use this interpretation to give a combinatorial proof that KK^{-1}=I but were unable to do the same for the equation K^{-1}K=I. We define a sign-reversing involution on rooted special rim-hook tableaux which can be used to prove that the last column of this second product is correct. In addition, following a suggestion of Chow we combine our involution with a result of Gasharov to give a combinatorial proof of a special case of the (3+1)-free Conjecture of Stanley and Stembridge.

In this paper, we continue our study of the Hilbert polynomials of coinvariants begun in our previous work math.QA/0205324 (paper I). We describe the sl_n-fusion products for symmetric tensor representations following the method of Feigin and Feigin, and show that their Hilbert polynomials are A_{n-1}-supernomials. We identify the fusion product of arbitrary irreducible sl_n-modules with the fusion product of their resctriction to sl_{n-1}. Then using the equivalence theorem from paper I and the results above for sl_3, we give a fermionic formula for the Hilbert polynomials of a class of affine sl_2-coinvariants in terms of the level-restricted Kostka polynomials. The coinvariants under consideration are a generalization of the coinvariants studied in [FKLMM]. Our formula differs from the fermionic formula established in [FKLMM] and implies the alternating sum formula conjectured in [FL] for this case.

Using the theory of Kostka polynomials, we prove an A_{n-1} version of Bailey's lemma at integral level. Exploiting a new, conjectural expansion for Kostka numbers, this is then generalized to fractional levels, leading to a new expression for admissible characters of A_{n-1}^{(1)} and to identities for A-type branching functions.

The fusion rule gives the dimensions of spaces of conformal blocks in the WZW theory. We prove a dimension formula similar to the fusion rulefor spaces of coinvariants of affine Lie algebras g^. An equivalence of filtered spaces is established between spaces of coinvariants of two objects: highest weight g^-modules and tensor products of finite-dimensional evaluation representations of g\otimes\C[t].
In the sl_2 case we prove that their associated graded spaces are isomorphic to the spaces of coinvariants of fusion products, and that their Hilbert polynomials are the level-restricted Kostka polynomials.

A family of vertex operators that generalizes those given by Jing for the Hall-Littlewood symmetric functions is presented. These operators produce symmetric functions related to the Poincare polynomials referred to as generalized Kostka polynomials in the same way that Jing's operator produces symmetric functions related to Kostka-Foulkes polynomials. These operators are then used to derive commutation relations and new relations involving the generalized Kostka coefficients. Such relations may be interpreted as identities in the (GL(n) x C^*)-equivariant K-theory of the nullcone.

Level-restricted paths play an important role in crystal theory. They correspond to certain highest weight vectors of modules of quantum affine algebras. We show that the recently established bijection between Littlewood--Richardson tableaux and rigged configurations is well-behaved with respect to level-restriction and give an explicit characterization of level-restricted rigged configurations. As a consequence a new general fermionic formula for the level-restricted generalized Kostka polynomial is obtained. Some coset branching functions of type $A$ are computed by taking limits of these fermionic formulas.

We report about results revolving around Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials and their connections with Representation Theory and Combinatorics. It appears that the set of all parabolic Kostka polynomials forms a semigroup, which we call {\it Liskova semigroup}. We show that polynomials frequently appearing in Representation Theory and Combinatorics belong to the Liskova semigroup. Among such polynomials we study rectangular $q$-Catalan numbers; generalized exponents polynomials; principal specializations of the internal product of Schur functions; generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials; parabolic Kostant partition function and its $q$-analog; certain generating functions on the set of transportation matrices. In each case we apply rigged configurations technique to obtain some interesting and new information about Kostka-Foulkes and parabolic Kostka polynomials, Kostant partition function, MacMahon, Gelfand-Tsetlin and Chan-Robbins polytopes. We describe certain connections between generalized saturation and Fulton's conjectures and parabolic Kostka polynomials; domino tableaux and rigged configurations. We study also some properties of $l$-restricted generalized exponents and the stable behaviour of certain Kostka-Foulkes polynomials.
