In the study of Kostka numbers and Catalan numbers, Kirillov posed a unimodality conjecture for the rectangular Narayana polynomials. We prove that the rectangular Narayana polynomials have only real zeros, and thereby confirm Kirillov's unimodality conjecture with the help of Newton's inequality. By using an equidistribution property between descent numbers and ascent numbers on ballot paths due to Sulanke and a bijection between lattice words and standard Young tableaux, we show that the rectangular Narayana polynomial is equal to the descent generating function on standard Young tableaux of certain rectangular shape, up to a power of the indeterminate. Then we obtain the real-rootedness of the rectangular Narayana polynomial based on Brenti's result that the descent generating function of standard Young tableaux has only real zeros.

We take an elementary approach to derive a generalization of Kunth's formula using Lassalle's explicit formula. In particular, we give a formula for the Kostka numbers of a shape $μ\vdash n$ and weight $(m,1^{n-m})$ for $m=3,\;4$.
A correction to the paper `A new approach to the representation theory of the symmetric groups, III'
The aim of this paper is to give a corrected bijective proof of Vershik's relations for the Kostka numbers. Our proof uses insertion and reverse insertion algorithms, as in the combinatorial proof of the Pieri rule.

We prove a conjecture which expresses the bigraded Poisson-de Rham homology of the nilpotent cone of a semisimple Lie algebra in terms of the generalized (one-variable) Kostka polynomials, via a formula suggested by Lusztig. This allows us to construct a canonical family of filtrations on the flag variety cohomology, and hence on irreducible representations of the Weyl group, whose Hilbert series are given by the generalized Kostka polynomials. We deduce consequences for the cohomology of all Springer fibers. In particular, this computes the grading on the zeroth Poisson homology of all classical finite W-algebras, as well as the filtration on the zeroth Hochschild homology of all quantum finite W-algebras, and we generalize to all homology degrees. As a consequence, we deduce a conjecture of Proudfoot on symplectic duality, relating in type A the Poisson homology of Slodowy slices to the intersection cohomology of nilpotent orbit closures. In the last section, we give an analogue of our main theorem in the setting of mirabolic D-modules.
Kostka multiplicity one for multipartitions
If $[λ(j)]$ is a multipartition of the positive integer $n$ (a sequence of partitions with total size $n$), and $μ$ is a partition of $n$, we study the number $K_{[λ(j)]μ}$ of sequences of semistandard Young tableaux of shape $[λ(j)]$ and total weight $μ$. We show that the numbers $K_{[λ(j)] μ}$ occur naturally as the multiplicities in certain permutation representations of wreath products. The main result is a set of conditions on $[λ(j)]$ and $μ$ which are equivalent to $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$, generalizing a theorem of Berenshteĭn and Zelevinskiĭ. We also show that the questions of whether $K_{[λ(j)] μ} > 0$ or $K_{[λ(j)] μ} = 1$ can be answered in polynomial time, expanding on a result of Narayanan. Finally, we give an application to multiplicities in the degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representations of the finite general linear group, and we show that the problem of determining whether a given irreducible representation of the finite general linear group appears with nonzero multiplicity in a given degenerate Gel'fand-Graev representation, with their partition parameters as input, is $NP$-complete.

We will look at the Catalan numbers from the {\it Rigged Configurations} point of view originated \cite{Kir} from an combinatorial analysis of the Bethe Ansatz Equations associated with the higher spin anisotropic Heisenberg models . Our strategy is to take a combinatorial interpretation of Catalan numbers $C_n$ as the number of standard Young tableaux of rectangular shape $(n^2)$, or equivalently, as the Kostka number $K_{(n^2),1^{2n}}$, as the starting point of research. We observe that the rectangular (or multidimensional) Catalan numbers $ C(m,n)$ introduced and studied by P. MacMahon \cite{Mc}, \cite{Su1}, see also \cite{Su2}, can be identified with the Kostka number $K_{(n^m),1^{mn}}$, and therefore can be treated by Rigged Configurations technique. Based on this technique we study the stretched Kostka numbers and polynomials, and give a proof of `` a strong rationality `` of the stretched Kostka polynomials. This result implies a polynomiality property of the stretched Kostka and stretched Littlewood--Richardson coefficients \cite{KT}, \cite{Ras}, \cite{Ki1}. Another application of the Rigged Configuration technique presented, is a new family of counterexamples to Okounkov's log-concavity conjecture \cite{Ok}. Finally, we apply Rigged Configurations technique to give a combinatorial prove of the unimodality of the principal specialization of the internal product of Schur functions. In fact we prove a combinatorial formula for generalized $q$-Gaussian polynomials which is a far generalization of the so-called $KOH$-identity \cite{O}, as well as it manifests the unimodality property of the $q$-Gaussian polynomials.

Introduced by Kawanaka in order to find the unipotent representations of finite groups of Lie type, generalized Gelfand--Graev characters have remained somewhat mysterious. Even in the case of the finite general linear groups, the combinatorics of their decompositions has not been worked out. This paper re-interprets Kawanaka's definition in type $A$ in a way that gives far more flexibility in computations. We use these alternate constructions to show how to obtain generalized Gelfand--Graev representations directly from the maximal unipotent subgroups. We also explicitly decompose the corresponding generalized Gelfand--Graev characters in terms of unipotent representations, thereby recovering the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials as multiplicities.

We show that some of the main structural constants for symmetric functions (Littlewood-Richardson coefficients, Kronecker coefficients, plethysm coefficients, and the Kostka--Foulkes polynomials) share symmetries related to the operations of taking complements with respect to rectangles and adding rectangles.
Averages of alpha-determinants over permutations
We show that certain weighted average of the alpha-determinant of a $kn$ by $kn$ matrix of the form $A\otimes1_{1,k}$, the Kronecker product of a $kn$ by $n$ matrix $A$ and $1$ by $k$ all one matrix $1_{1,k}$, over permutations of $kn$ letters is reduced to the $k$-wreath determinant of $A$ up to constant. The constant is exactly given by the modified content polynomial for the Young diagram $(k^n)$. As a corollary, we give a `determinantal' formula for certain functions on the symmetric groups which are invariant under the left and right translation by a Young subgroup, especially the values of the Kostka numbers for rectangular shapes with arbitrary weight. This corollary gives a generalization of the formula of irreducible characters of the symmetric group for rectangular shapes due to Stanley.

We give a combinatorial proof of the skew Kostka analogue of the K-saturation theorem. More precisely, for any positive integer k, we give an explicit injection from the set of skew semistandard Young tableaux with skew shape kλ/kμ and type kν to the set of skew semistandard Young tableaux of shape λ/μ and type ν.
Based on this method, we pose some natural conjectural refinements on related problems.

Let $M_w = (\Pj^1)^n \q \mathrm{SL}_2$ denote the geometric invariant theory quotient of $(\Pj^1)^n$ by the diagonal action of $\mathrm{SL}_2$ using the line bundle $\mathcal{O}(w_1,w_2,...,w_n)$ on $(\Pj^1)^n$. Let $R_w$ be the coordinate ring of $M_w$. We give a closed formula for the Hilbert function of $R_w$, which allows us to compute the degree of $M_w$. The graded parts of $R_w$ are certain Kostka numbers, so this Hilbert function computes stretched Kostka numbers. If all the weights $w_i$ are even, we find a presentation of $R_w$ so that the ideal $I$ of this presentation has a quadratic Gröbner basis. In particular, $R_w$ is Koszul. We obtain this result by studying the homogeneous coordinate ring of a projective toric variety arising as a degeneration of $M_w$.

We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. This constitutes the largest family of enumerative problems whose Galois groups have been largely determined. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, our result follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, a combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use the Weyl integral formula to obtain an integral formula for these Kostka numbers. This rewrites the inequality as an integral, which we estimate to establish the inequality.

Using the expansion of the inverse of the Kostka matrix in terms of tabloids as presented by Egecioglu and Remmel, we show that the fusion coefficients can be expressed as an alternating sum over cylindric tableaux. Cylindric tableaux are skew tableaux with a certain cyclic symmetry. When the skew shape of the tableau has a cutting point, meaning that the cylindric skew shape is not connected, or if its weight has at most two parts, we give a positive combinatorial formula for the fusion coefficients. The proof uses a slight modification of a sign-reversing involution introduced by Remmel and Shimozono. We discuss how this approach may work in general.
An inequality of Kostka numbers and Galois groups of Schubert problems

We show that the Galois group of any Schubert problem involving lines in projective space contains the alternating group. Using a criterion of Vakil and a special position argument due to Schubert, this follows from a particular inequality among Kostka numbers of two-rowed tableaux. In most cases, an easy combinatorial injection proves the inequality. For the remaining cases, we use that these Kostka numbers appear in tensor product decompositions of sl_2(C)-modules. Interpreting the tensor product as the action of certain commuting Toeplitz matrices and using a spectral analysis and Fourier series rewrites the inequality as the positivity of an integral. We establish the inequality by estimating this integral.
Macdonald polynomials in superspace as eigenfunctions of commuting operators

A generalization of the Macdonald polynomials depending upon both commuting and anticommuting variables has been introduced recently. The construction relies on certain orthogonality and triangularity relations. Although many superpolynomials were constructed as solutions of highly over-determined system, the existence issue was left open. This is resolved here: we demonstrate that the underlying construction has a (unique) solution. The proof uses, as a starting point, the definition of the Macdonald superpolynomials in terms of the Macdonald non-symmetric polynomials via a non-standard (anti)symmetrization and a suitable dressing by anticommuting monomials. This relationship naturally suggests the form of two family of commuting operators that have the defined superpolynomials as their common eigenfunctions. These eigenfunctions are then shown to be triangular and orthogonal. Up to a normalization, these two conditions uniquely characterize these superpolynomials. Moreover, the Macdonald superpolynomials are found to be orthogonal with respect to a second (constant-term-type) scalar product and its norm is evaluated. The latter is shown to match (up to a q-power) the conjectured norm with respect to the original scalar product. Finally, we recall the super-version of the Macdonald positivity conjecture and present two new conjectures which both provide a remarkable relationship between the new (q,t)-Kostka coefficients and the usual ones.

In previous work with Mikhail Khovanov and Aaron Lauda we introduced two odd analogues of the Schur functions: one via the combinatorics of Young tableaux (odd Kostka numbers) and one via the odd symmetrization operator. In this paper we introduce a third analogue, the plactic Schur functions. We show they coincide with both previously defined types of Schur function, confirming a conjecture. Using the plactic definition, we establish an odd Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also re-cast this rule in the language of polytopes, via the Knutson-Tao hive model.

The representation theory of the symmetric groups is intimately related to geometry, algebraic combinatorics, and Lie theory. The spin representation theory of the symmetric groups was originally developed by Schur. In these lecture notes, we present a coherent account of the spin counterparts of several classical constructions such as the Frobenius characteristic map, Schur duality, the coinvariant algebra, Kostka polynomials, and Young's seminormal form.

We study on Weyl modules of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras. In particular, we give the character formula of the Weyl modules by using the Kostka numbers and some numbers which are computed by a generalization of Littlewood-Richardson rule. We also study corresponding symmetric functions. Finally, we give some simple applications to modular representations of cyclotomic $q$-Schur algebras.

We introduce a new basis for quasisymmetric functions, which arise from a specialization of nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials to standard bases, also known as Demazure atoms. Our new basis is called the basis of quasisymmetric Schur functions, since the basis elements refine Schur functions in a natural way. We derive expansions for quasisymmetric Schur functions in terms of monomial and fundamental quasisymmetric functions, which give rise to quasisymmetric refinements of Kostka numbers and standard (reverse) tableaux.
From here we derive a Pieri rule for quasisymmetric Schur functions that naturally refines the Pieri rule for Schur functions. After surveying combinatorial formulas for Macdonald polynomials, including an expansion of Macdonald polynomials into fundamental quasisymmetric functions, we show how some of our results can be extended to include the $t$ parameter from Hall-Littlewood theory.
