Coloring the Voronoi tessellation of lattices
Published in J. London Math. Soc. (2) 104 (2021) 1135-1171 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define the chromatic number of a lattice: It is the least number of colors one needs to color the interiors of the cells of the Voronoi tessellation of a lattice so that no two cells sharing a facet are of the same color. We compute the chromatic number of the root lattices, their duals, and of the Leech lattice, we consider the chromatic number of lattices of Voronoi's first kind, and we investigate the asymptotic behaviour of the chromatic number of lattices when the dimension tends to infinity. We introduce a spectral lower bound for the chromatic number of lattices in spirit of Hoffman's bound for finite graphs. We compute this bound for the root lattices and relate it to the character theory of the corresponding Lie groups.

Ramanujan complexes and Golden Gates in PU(3)
Published in Geometric and Functional Analysis 32:193-235 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
In a seminal series of papers from the 80's, Lubotzky, Phillips and Sarnak applied the Ramanujan-Petersson Conjecture for $GL_{2}$ (Deligne's theorem), to a special family of arithmetic lattices, which act simply-transitively on the Bruhat-Tits trees associated with $SL_{2}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$. As a result, they obtained explicit Ramanujan Cayley graphs from $PSL_{2}\left(\mathbb{F}_{p}\right)$, as well as optimal topological generators ("Golden Gates") for the compact Lie group $PU(2)$. In higher dimension, the naive generalization of the Ramanujan Conjecture fails, due to the phenomenon of endoscopic lifts. In this paper we overcome this problem for $PU_{3}$ by constructing a family of arithmetic lattices which act simply-transitively on the Bruhat-Tits buildings associated with $SL_{3}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$ and $SU_{3}(\mathbb{Q}_{p})$, while at the same time do not admit any representation which violates the Ramanujan Conjecture. This gives us Ramanujan complexes from $PSL_{3}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$ and $PSU_{3}(\mathbb{F}_{p})$, as well as golden gates for $PU(3)$.

Geometric constructions over $\mathbb{C}$ and $\mathbb{F}_2$ for Quantum Information
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this review paper I present two geometric constructions of distinguished nature, one is over the field of complex numbers $\mathbb{C}$ and the other one is over the two elements field $\mathbb{F}_2$. Both constructions have been employed in the past fifteen years to describe two quantum paradoxes or two resources of quantum information: entanglement of pure multipartite systems on one side and contextuality on the other. Both geometric constructions are linked to representation of semi-simple Lie groups/algebras. To emphasize this aspect one explains on one hand how well-known results in representation theory allows one to see all the classification of entanglement classes of various tripartite quantum systems ($3$ qubits, $3$ fermions, $3$ bosonic qubits...) in a unified picture. On the other hand, one also shows how some weight diagrams of simple Lie groups are encapsulated in the geometry which deals with the commutation relations of the generalized $N$-Pauli group.

Combinatorics of certain abelian Lie group arrangements and chromatic quasi-polynomials
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 165 (2019), 258-272 • View PublicationBIB
The purpose of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we generalize the notion of characteristic polynomials of hyperplane and toric arrangements to those of certain abelian Lie group arrangements. Secondly, we give two interpretations for the chromatic quasi-polynomials and their constituents through subspace and toric viewpoints.

Structure and regularity for subsets of groups with finite VC-dimension
Published in Journal of the European Mathematical Society 24 (2022) no. 2, 583-621 • View PublicationBIB
Suppose $G$ is a finite group and $A\subseteq G$ is such that $\{gA:g\in G\}$ has VC-dimension strictly less than $k$. We find algebraically well-structured sets in $G$ which, up to a chosen $ε>0$, describe the structure of $A$ and behave regularly with respect to translates of $A$. For the subclass of groups with uniformly fixed finite exponent $r$, these algebraic objects are normal subgroups with index bounded in terms of $k$, $r$, and $ε$. For arbitrary groups, we use Bohr neighborhoods of bounded rank and width inside normal subgroups of bounded index. Our proofs are largely model theoretic, and heavily rely on a structural analysis of compactifications of pseudofinite groups as inverse limits of Lie groups. The introduction of Bohr neighborhoods into the nonabelian setting uses model theoretic methods related to the work of Breuillard, Green, and Tao and Hrushovski on approximate groups, as well as a result of Alekseev, Glebskii, and Gordon on approximate homomorphisms.

Scaling limits of Cayley graphs with polynomially growing balls
Benjamini, Finucane and the first author have shown that if (G_n,S_n) is a sequence of Cayley graphs such that |S_n^n|=O(n^D|S_n|), then the sequence (G_n,d_{S_n}/n) is relatively compact for the Gromov-Hausdorff topology and every cluster point is a connected nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant sub-Finsler metric. In this paper we show that the dimension of such a cluster point is bounded by D, and that, under the stronger bound |S_n^n|=O(n^D), the homogeneous dimension of a cluster point is bounded by D. Our approach is roughly to use a well-known structure theorem for approximate groups due to Breuillard, Green and Tao to replace S_n^n with a coset nilprogression of bounded rank, and then to use results about nilprogressions from a previous paper of ours to study the ultralimits of such coset nilprogressions. As an application we bound the dimension of the scaling limit of a sequence of vertex-transitive graphs of large diameter. We also recover and effectivise parts of an argument of Tao concerning the further growth of single set S satisfying the bound |S^n| < Mn^D|S|.

Factorial characters of classical Lie groups and their combinatorial realisations
Just as the definition of factorial Schur functions as a ratio of determinants allows one to show that they satisfy a Jacobi-Trudi-type identity and have an explicit combinatorial realisation in terms of semistandard tableaux, so we offer here definitions of factorial irreducible characters of the classical Lie groups as ratios of determinants that share these two features. These factorial characters are each specified by a partition, $λ=(λ_1,λ_2,\ldots,λ_n)$, and in each case a flagged Jacobi-Trudi identity is derived that expresses the factorial character as a determinant of corresponding factorial characters specified by one-part partitions, $(m)$, for which we supply generating functions. These identities are established by manipulating determinants through the use of certain recurrence relations derived from these generating functions. The transitions to combinatorial realisations of the factorial characters in terms of tableaux are then established by means of non-intersecting lattice path models. The results apply to $gl(n)$, $so(2n+1)$, $sp(2n)$ and $o(2n)$, and are extended to the case of $so(2n)$ by making use of newly defined factorial difference characters.

$G$-Tutte polynomials and abelian Lie group arrangements
Published in Int. Math. Res. Not. IMRN 2021, no. 1, 152-190 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce and study the notion of the $G$-Tutte polynomial for a list $\mathcal{A}$ of elements in a finitely generated abelian group $Γ$ and an abelian group $G$, which is defined by counting the number of homomorphisms from associated finite abelian groups to $G$. The $G$-Tutte polynomial is a common generalization of the (arithmetic) Tutte polynomial for realizable (arithmetic) matroids, the characteristic quasi-polynomial for integral arrangements, Brändén-Moci's arithmetic version of the partition function of an abelian group-valued Potts model, and the modified Tutte-Krushkal-Renhardy polynomial for a finite CW-complex. As in the classical case, $G$-Tutte polynomials carry topological and enumerative information (e.g., the Euler characteristic, point counting and the Poincaré polynomial) of abelian Lie group arrangements. We also discuss differences between the arithmetic Tutte and the $G$-Tutte polynomials related to the axioms for arithmetic matroids and the (non-)positivity of coefficients.

A Reduction for the Distinct Distances Problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$
We introduce a reduction from the distinct distances problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$ to an incidence problem with $(d-1)$-flats in ${\mathbb R}^{2d-1}$. Deriving the conjectured bound for this incidence problem (the bound predicted by the polynomial partitioning technique) would lead to a tight bound for the distinct distances problem in ${\mathbb R}^d$. The reduction provides a large amount of information about the $(d-1)$-flats, and a framework for deriving more restrictions that these satisfy. Our reduction is based on introducing a Lie group that is a double cover of the special Euclidean group. This group can be seen as a variant of the Spin group, and a large part of our analysis involves studying its properties.

Lie-Butcher series, Geometry, Algebra and Computation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lie-Butcher (LB) series are formal power series expressed in terms of trees and forests. On the geometric side LB-series generalizes classical B-series from Euclidean spaces to Lie groups and homogeneous manifolds. On the algebraic side, B-series are based on pre-Lie algebras and the Butcher-Connes-Kreimer Hopf algebra. The LB-series are instead based on post-Lie algebras and their enveloping algebras. Over the last decade the algebraic theory of LB-series has matured. The purpose of this paper is twofold. First, we aim at presenting the algebraic structures underlying LB series in a concise and self contained manner. Secondly, we review a number of algebraic operations on LB-series found in the literature, and reformulate these as recursive formulae. This is part of an ongoing effort to create an extensive software library for computations in LB-series and B-series in the programming language Haskell.
Structure of Polyzetas and Explicit Representation on Transcendence Bases of Shuffle and Stuffle Algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Polyzetas, indexed by words, satisfy shuffle and quasi-shuffle identities. In this respect, one can explore the multiplicative and algorithmic (locally finite) properties of their generating series. In this paper, we construct pairs of bases in duality on which polyzetas are established in order to compute local coordinates in the infinite dimensional Lie groups where their non-commutative generating series live. We also propose new algorithms leading to the ideal of polynomial relations, homogeneous in weight, among polyzetas (the graded kernel) and their explicit representation (as data structures) in terms of irreducible elements.

On H-Spaces and a Congruence of Catalan Numbers
Published in Homology, Homotopy & Applications, 2017, Vol. 19 Issue 2, pp. 21-30 • View PublicationBIB
For $p$ an odd prime and $F$ the cyclic group of order $p$, we show that the number of conjugacy classes of embeddings of $F$ in $SU(p)$ such that no element of $F$ has 1 as an eigenvalue is $(1+C_{p-1})/p$, where $C_{p-1}$ is a Catalan number. We prove that the only coset space $SU(p)/F$ that admits a $p$-local $H$-structure is the classical Lie group $PSU(p)$. We also show that $SU(4)/\mathbb Z_3$, where $\mathbb Z_3$ is embedded off the center of $SU(4)$, is a novel example of an $H$-space, even globally. We apply our results to the study of homotopy classes of maps from $BF$ to $BSU(n)$.
Generating functions and statistics on spaces of maximal tori in classical Lie groups
Published in New York J. Math. 23 (2017) 165-191 • Search Publication
In this paper we use generating function methods to obtain new asymptotic results about spaces of $F$-stable maximal tori in $GL_n(\overline{F_q})$, $Sp_{2n}(\overline{F_q})$, and $SO_{2n+1}(\overline{F_q})$. We recover stability results of Church--Ellenberg--Farb and Jiménez Rolland--Wilson for "polynomial" statistics on these spaces, and we compute explicit formulas for their stable values. We derive a double generating function for the characters of the cohomology of flag varieties in type B/C, which we use to obtain analogs in type B/C of results of Chen: we recover "twisted homological stability" for the spaces of maximal tori in $Sp_{2n}(\mathbb{C})$ and $SO_{2n+1}(\mathbb{C})$, and we compute a generating function for their "stable twisted Betti numbers". We also give a new proof of a result of Lehrer using symmetric function theory.

Factorial characters of some classical Lie groups
A definition is offered of the factorial characters of the general linear group, the symplectic group and the orthogonal group in an odd dimensional space. It is shown that these characters satisfy certain flagged Jacobi-Trudi identities. These identities are then used to give combinatorial expressions for the factorial characters: first in terms of a lattice path model and then in terms of the well known tableaux associated with the classical groups. Factorial Q-functions are then defined in terms of three sets of primed shifted tableaux, and shown to satisfy Tokuyama type identities in each case.

Tensor Product Multiplicities via Upper Cluster Algebras
Published in Annales de l'ENS, volume 54, issue 6 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
For each valued quiver $Q$ of Dynkin type, we construct a valued ice quiver $Δ_Q^2$. Let $G$ be a simple connected Lie group with Dynkin diagram the underlying valued graph of $Q$. The upper cluster algebra of $Δ_Q^2$ is graded by the triple dominant weights $(μ,ν,λ)$ of $G$. We prove that when $G$ is simply-laced, the dimension of each graded component counts the tensor multiplicity $c_{μ,ν}^λ$. We conjecture that this is also true if $G$ is not simply-laced, and sketch a possible approach. Using this construction, we improve Berenstein-Zelevinsky's model, or in some sense generalize Knutson-Tao's hive model in type $A$.

Reflection groups, reflection arrangements, and invariant real varieties

Let $X$ be a nonempty real variety that is invariant under the action of a reflection group $G$. We conjecture that if $X$ is defined in terms of the first $k$ basic invariants of $G$ (ordered by degree), then $X$ meets a $k$-dimensional flat of the associated reflection arrangement. We prove this conjecture for the infinite types, reflection groups of rank at most $3$, and $F_4$ and we give computational evidence for $H_4$. This is a generalization of Timofte's degree principle to reflection groups. For general reflection groups, we compute nontrivial upper bounds on the minimal dimension of flats of the reflection arrangement meeting $X$ from the combinatorics of parabolic subgroups. We also give generalizations to real varieties invariant under Lie groups.

Expansion of polynomial Lie group integrals in terms of certain maps on surfaces, and factorizations of permutations
Published in J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50 075201 (2017) • View PublicationBIB
Using the diagrammatic approach to integrals over Gaussian random matrices, we find a representation for polynomial Lie group integrals as infinite sums over certain maps on surfaces. The maps involved satisfy a specific condition: they have some marked vertices, and no closed walks that avoid these vertices. We also formulate our results in terms of permutations, arriving at new kinds of factorization problems.

On the distribution of the number of fixed vectors for the finite classical groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated by analogous results for the symmetric group and compact Lie groups, we study the distribution of the number of fixed vectors of a random element of a finite classical group. We determine the limiting moments of these distributions, and find exactly how large the rank of the group has to be in order for the moment to stabilize to its limiting value. The proofs require a subtle use of some q-series identities. We also point out connections with orthogonal polynomials.

On Double Schubert and Grothendieck polynomials for Classical Groups
We give an algebra-combinatorial constructions of (noncommutative) generating functions of double Schubert and double $β$-Grothendieck polynomials corresponding to the full flag varieties associated to the Lie groups of classical types $A,B, C$ and $D$. Our approach is based on the decomposition of certain `` transfer matrices `` corresponding to the exponential solution to the quantum Yang--Baxter equations associated with either NiCoxeter or IdCoxeter algebras of classical types. The "triple"~$β$-Grothendieck polynomials ${\mathfrak{G}}_{w}^{W}(X,Y,Z)$ we have introduced, satisfy, among other things, the coherency and (generalized) vanishing conditions. Their generating function has a nice factorization in the algebra $Id_βCoxeter(W)$, and as a consequence, the polynomials ${\mathfrak{G}}_{w}^{W}(X,Y,Z)$ admit a combinatorial description in terms of $W$-type pipe dreams.
