Matrix multiplication via matrix groups
In 2003, Cohn and Umans proposed a group-theoretic approach to bounding the exponent of matrix multiplication. Previous work within this approach ruled out certain families of groups as a route to obtaining $ω= 2$, while other families of groups remain potentially viable. In this paper we turn our attention to matrix groups, whose usefulness within this framework was relatively unexplored.
We first show that groups of Lie type cannot prove $ω=2$ within the group-theoretic approach. This is based on a representation-theoretic argument that identifies the second-smallest dimension of an irreducible representation of a group as a key parameter that determines its viability in this framework. Our proof builds on Gowers' result concerning product-free sets in quasirandom groups. We then give another barrier that rules out certain natural matrix group constructions that make use of subgroups that are far from being self-normalizing.
Our barrier results leave open several natural paths to obtain $ω= 2$ via matrix groups. To explore these routes we propose working in the continuous setting of Lie groups, in which we develop an analogous theory. Obtaining the analogue of $ω=2$ in this potentially easier setting is a key challenge that represents an intermediate goal short of actually proving $ω= 2$. We give two constructions in the continuous setting, each of which evades one of our two barriers.

We present a combinatorial analysis of fiber bundles of generalized configuration spaces on connected abelian Lie groups. These bundles are akin to those of Fadell-Neuwirth for configuration spaces, and their existence is detected by a combinatorial property of an associated finite partially ordered set. This is consistent with Terao's fibration theorem connecting bundles of hyperplane arrangements to Stanley's lattice supersolvability. We obtain a combinatorially determined class of K($π$,1) toric and elliptic arrangements. Under a stronger combinatorial condition, we prove a factorization of the Poincaré polynomial when the Lie group is noncompact. In the case of toric arrangements, this provides an analogue of Falk-Randell's formula relating the Poincaré polynomial to the lower central series of the fundamental group.

We consider the skew Howe duality for the action of certain dual pairs of Lie groups $(G_1, G_2)$ on the exterior algebra $\bigwedge(\mathbb{C}^{n} \otimes \mathbb{C}^{k})$ as a probability measure on Young diagrams by the decomposition into the sum of irreducible representations. We prove a combinatorial version of this skew Howe for the pairs $(\mathrm{GL}_{n}, \mathrm{GL}_{k})$, $(\mathrm{SO}_{2n+1}, \mathrm{Pin}_{2k})$, $(\mathrm{Sp}_{2n}, \mathrm{Sp}_{2k})$, and $(\mathrm{Or}_{2n}, \mathrm{SO}_{k})$ using crystal bases, which allows us to interpret the skew Howe duality as a natural consequence of lattice paths on lozenge tilings of certain partial hexagonal domains. The $G_1$-representation multiplicity is given as a determinant formula using the Lindström-Gessel-Viennot lemma and as a product formula using Dodgson condensation. These admit natural $q$-analogs that we show equals the $q$-dimension of a $G_2$-representation (up to an overall factor of $q$), giving a refined version of the combinatorial skew Howe duality. Using these product formulas (at $q =1$), we take the infinite rank limit and prove the diagrams converge uniformly to the limit shape.

We introduce certain generalisations of the characters of the classical Lie groups, extending the recently defined factorial characters of Foley and King. In this extension, the factorial powers are replaced with an arbitrary sequence of polynomials, as in Sergeev-Veselov's generalised Schur functions and Okada's generalised Schur P- and Q-functions. We also offer a similar generalisation for the rational Schur functions. We derive Littlewood-type identities for our generalisations. These identities allow us to give new (unflagged) Jacobi-Trudi identities for the Foley-King factorial characters and for rational versions of the factorial Schur functions. We also propose an extension of the original Macdonald's ninth variation of Schur functions to the case of symplectic and orthogonal characters, which helps us prove Nägelsbach-Kostka identities.
On the small measure expansion phenomenon in connected noncompact nonabelian groups
Suppose $G$ is a connected noncompact locally compact group, $A,B$ are nonempty and compact subsets of $G$, $μ$ is a left Haar measure on $G$. Assuming that $G$ is unimodular, and $ μ(A^2) < K μ(A) $ with $K>1$ a fixed constant, our first result shows that there is a continuous surjective group homomorphism $χ: G\to L$ with compact kernel, where $L$ is a Lie group with $$\dim(L) \leq \lfloor\log K\rfloor(\lfloor\log K\rfloor+1)/2.$$ We also demonstrate that this dimension bound is sharp, establish the relationship between $A$ and its image under the quotient map, and obtain a more general version of this result for the product set $AB$ without assuming unimodularity.
Our second result classifies $G,A,B$ where $A,B$ have nearly minimal expansions (when $G$ is unimodular, this just means $μ(AB)$ is close to $μ(A)+μ(B)$). This answers a question suggested by Griesmer and Tao, and completes the last open case of the inverse Kemperman problem.
The proofs of both results involve a new analysis of locally compact group $G$ with bounded $n-h$, where $n-h$ is an invariant of $G$ appearing in the recently developed nonabelian Brunn-Minkowski inequality. We also generalize Ruzsa's distance and related results to possibly nonunimodular locally compact groups.
On some combinatorial sequences associated to invariant theory

We study the enumerative and analytic properties of some sequences constructed using tensor invariant theory. The octant sequences are constructed from the exceptional Lie group $G_2$ and the quadrant sequences from the special linear group $SL(3)$. In each case we show that the corresponding sequences are related by binomial transforms. The first three octant sequences and the first four quadrant sequences are listed in the On-Line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS). These sequences all have interpretations as enumerating two-dimensional lattice walks but for the octant sequences the boundary conditions are unconventional. These sequences are all P-recursive and we give the corresponding recurrence relations. In all cases the associated differential operators are of third order and have the remarkable property that they can be solved to give closed formulae for the ordinary generating functions in terms of classical Gaussian hypergeometric functions. Moreover, we show that the octant sequences and the quadrant sequences are related by the branching rules for the inclusion of $SL(3)$ in $G_2$.
On reductive subgroups of reductive groups having invariants in almost all representations
Let $G$ and $\tilde G$ be connected complex reductive Lie groups, $G$ semisimple. Let $Λ^+$ be the monoid of dominant weights for a positive root system $Δ^+$, and let $l(w)$ be the length of a Weyl group element $w$. Let $V_λ$ denote an irreducible $G$-module of highest weight $λ\inΛ^+$. For any closed embedding $ι:\tilde G\subset G$, we consider
Property (A): $\quad\forallλ\inΛ^+,\exists q\in\mathbb{N}$ such that $V_{qλ}^{\tilde G}\ne0$.
A necessary condition for (A) is for $G$ to have no simple factors to which $G$ projects surjectively. We show that this condition is sufficient if $\tilde G$ is of type ${\bf A}_1$ or ${\bf E}_8$.
We define and study an integral invariant of a root system, $\ell_G=\min\{\ell^λ:λ\inΛ^+\setminus\{0\}\}$, where $\ell^λ=\min\{l(w):wλ\notin{\rm Cone}(Δ^+)\}$. We derive the following sufficient condition for (A), independent of $ι$: $$ \ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > 0 \;\Longrightarrow\; (A). $$ We compute $\ell_G$ and related data for all simple $G$, except ${\bf E}_8$, where we obtain lower and upper bounds. We consider a stronger property (A-$k$) defined in terms of Geometric Invariant Theory, related to extreme values of codimensions of unstable loci, and derive a sufficient condition in the form $\ell_G - \#\tildeΔ^+ > k$. The invariant $\ell_G$ proves too week to handle $G=SL_n$ and we employ a companion $\ell_G^{\rm sd}$ to infer (A-$k$) for a larger class of subgroups. We derive corollaries on Mori-theoretic properties of GIT-quotients.

The groups mentioned in the title are certain matrix groups of infinite size over a finite field $\mathbb F_q$. They are built from finite classical groups and at the same time they are similar to reductive $p$-adic Lie groups. In the present paper, we initiate the study of invariant measures for the coadjoint action of these infinite-dimensional groups.
We examine first the group $\mathbb{GLB}$, a topological completion of the inductive limit group $\varinjlim GL(n, \mathbb F_q)$. As was shown by Gorin, Kerov, and Vershik [arXiv:1209.4945], the traceable factor representations of $\mathbb{GLB}$ admit a complete classification, achieved in terms of harmonic functions on the Young graph $\mathbb Y$.
We show that there exists a parallel theory for ergodic coadjoint-invariant measures, which is linked with a deformed version of harmonic functions on $\mathbb Y$. Here the deformation means that the edges of $\mathbb Y$ are endowed with certain formal multiplicities coming from the simplest version of Pieri rule (multiplication by the first power sum $p_1$) for the Hall-Littlewood (HL) symmetric functions with parameter $t:=q^{-1}$.
This fact serves as a prelude to our main results, which concern topological completions of two inductive limit groups built from finite unitary groups. We show that in this case, coadjoint-invariant measures are linked to some new branching graphs. The latter are still related to the HL functions, but the novelty is that now the formal edge multiplicities come from the multiplication by $p_2$ (not $p_1$) and the HL parameter $t$ turns out to be negative (as in Ennola's duality).

We construct colored lattice models whose partition functions represent symplectic and odd orthogonal Demazure characters and atoms. We show that our lattice models are not solvable, but we are able to show the existence of sufficiently many solutions of the Yang--Baxter equation that allows us to compute functional equations for the corresponding partition functions. From these functional equations, we determine that the partition function of our models are the Demazure atoms and characters for the symplectic and odd orthogonal Lie groups. We coin our lattice models as quasi-solvable. We use the natural bijection of admissible states in our models with Proctor patterns to give a right key algorithm for reverse King tableaux and Sundaram tableaux.
A nonabelian Brunn-Minkowski inequality

Henstock and Macbeath asked in 1953 whether the Brunn-Minkowski inequality can be generalized to nonabelian locally compact groups; questions along the same line were also asked by Hrushovski, McCrudden, and Tao. We obtain here such an inequality and prove that it is sharp for helix-free locally compact groups, which includes real linear algebraic groups, Nash groups, semisimple Lie groups with finite center, solvable Lie groups, etc. The proof follows an induction on dimension strategy; new ingredients include an understanding of the role played by maximal compact subgroups of Lie groups, a necessary modified form of the inequality which is also applicable to nonunimodular locally compact groups, and a proportionated averaging trick.

The Newell-Littlewood numbers $N_{μ,ν,λ}$ are tensor product multiplicities of Weyl modules for classical Lie groups, in the stable limit. For which triples of partitions $(μ,ν,λ)$ does $N_{μ,ν,λ}>0$ hold? The Littlewood-Richardson coefficient case is solved by the Horn inequalities (in work of A. Klyachko and A. Knutson-T. Tao). We extend these celebrated linear inequalities to a much larger family, suggesting a general solution.
Enumeration of Gelfand-Cetlin type reduced words

The combinatorics of reduced words and commutation classes plays an important role in geometric representation theory. A string polytope is a lattice polytope associated to each reduced word of the longest element $w_0$ in the symmetric group which encodes the character of a certain irreducible representation of a Lie group of type $A$. In this paper, we provide a recursive formula for the number of reduced words of $w_0$ such that the corresponding string polytopes are combinatorially equivalent to a Gelfand-Cetlin polytope. The recursive formula involves the number of standard Young tableaux of shifted shape. We also show that each commutation class is completely determined by a list of quantities called indices.
The Universal Valuation of Coxeter Matroids

Coxeter matroids generalize matroids just as flag varieties of Lie groups generalize Grassmannians. Valuations of Coxeter matroids are functions that behave well with respect to subdivisions of a Coxeter matroid into smaller ones. We compute the universal valuative invariant of Coxeter matroids. A key ingredient is the family of Coxeter Schubert matroids, which correspond to the Bruhat cells of flag varieties. In the process, we compute the universal valuation of generalized Coxeter permutohedra, a larger family of polyhedra that model Coxeter analogues of combinatorial objects such as matroids, clusters, and posets.

In the first part of this letter it will be shown that the post-Lie Magnus expansion can be interpreted as a crossed morphism between two (local) Lie group. The second part will be devoted to present two combinatorial methods, both based on special tubings on planar trees, to compute the coefficients of this remarkable formal series.
Minimal and nearly minimal measure expansions in connected unimodular groups
Let $G$ be a connected unimodular group equipped with a (left and hence right) Haar measure $μ_G$, and suppose $A, B \subseteq G$ are nonempty and compact. An inequality by Kemperman gives us $μ_G(AB)\geq\min\{μ_G(A)+μ_G(B),μ_G(G)\}.$
Our first result determines the conditions for the equality to hold, providing a complete answer to a question asked by Kemperman in 1964. Our second result characterizes compact and connected $G$, $A$, and $B$ that nearly realize equality, with quantitative bounds having the sharp exponent. This can be seen up-to-constant as a $(3k-4)$-theorem for this setting and confirms the connected case of conjectures by Griesmer and by Tao. As an application, we get a measure expansion gap result for connected compact simple Lie groups.
The tools developed in our proof include an analysis of the shape of minimally and nearly minimally expanding pairs of sets, a bridge from this to the properties of a certain pseudometric, and a construction of appropriate continuous group homomorphisms to either $\mathbb{R}$ or $\mathbb{T} = \mathbb{R}/\mathbb{Z}$ from the pseudometric.

The Newell-Littlewood numbers are defined in terms of their celebrated cousins, the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients. Both arise as tensor product multiplicities for a classical Lie group. They are the structure coefficients of the K. Koike-I. Terada basis of the ring of symmetric functions. Recent work of H. Hahn studies them, motivated by R. Langlands' beyond endoscopy proposal; we address her work with a simple characterization of detection of Weyl modules. This motivates further study of the combinatorics of the numbers. We consider analogues of ideas of J. De Loera-T. McAllister, H. Derksen-J. Weyman, S. Fomin-W. Fulton-C.-K. Li-Y.-T. Poon, W. Fulton, R. King-C. Tollu-F. Toumazet, M. Kleber, A. Klyachko, A. Transitive bounded-degree 2-expanders from regular 2-expanders
A two-dimensional simplicial complex is called $d$-{\em regular} if every edge of it is contained in exactly $d$ distinct triangles. It is called $ε$-expanding if its up-down two-dimensional random walk has a normalized maximal eigenvalue which is at most $1-ε$.
In this work, we present a class of bounded degree 2-dimensional expanders, which is the result of a small 2-complex action on a vertex set. The resulted complexes are fully transitive, meaning the automorphism group acts transitively on their faces.
Such two-dimensional expanders are rare! Known constructions of such bounded degree two-dimensional expander families are obtained from deep algebraic reasonings (e.g. coset geometries).
We show that given a small $d$-regular two-dimensional $ε$-expander, there exists an $ε'=ε'(ε)$ and a family of bounded degree two-dimensional simplicial complexes with a number of vertices goes to infinity, such that each complex in the family satisfies the following properties:
* It is $4d$-regular.
* The link of each vertex in the complex is the same regular graph (up to isomorphism).
* It is $ε'$ expanding.
* It is transitive.
The family of expanders that we get is explicit if the one-skeleton of the small complex is a complete multipartite graph, and it is random in the case of (almost) general $d$-regular complex. For the randomized construction, we use results on expanding generators in a product of simple Lie groups. This construction is inspired by ideas that occur in the zig-zag product for graphs. It can be seen as a loose two-dimensional analog of the replacement product.

We present estimates of number of simplices of given dimension of classical compact Lie groups. As in the previous work \cite{GMP2} the approach is a combination of an estimate of number of vertices with a use of valuation of the covering type by cohomological argument of \cite{GMP} and application of the recent versions of the Lower Bound Theorem of combinatorial topology. For the case of exceptional Lie groups we made a complete calculation using the description of their cohomology rings given by the first and third author. For infinite increasing series of Lie groups of growing dimension $d$ the rate of growth of number of simplices of highest dimension is given which extends onto the case of simplices of (fixed) codimension $d-i$.
Expectations of Tutte-related functions of random ranked sets with multiplicities

Employing two models, we show that various counting functions of a random variable defined by restriction or contraction of a ranked set with multiplicity (e.g., classical and arithmetic matroids) have expectations given by the corresponding multivariate Tutte polynomial. The first model is based on a generalization of a convolution formula of Kung (2010), extending from matroids to ranked sets with multiplicities. This model enables us to compute the expectations of many familiar polynomials, such as the chromatic, flow and Ehrhart polynomials, generalizing the classical results of Welsh (1996) on random graphs. The second model is designed to compute the expectations of invariants that are generally not evaluations of the polynomials mentioned above, such as the number of connected components of an intersection of hypersurfaces in an abelian Lie group arrangement, and the number of lattice points in a half-open zonotope. In particular, both models yield new probabilistic interpretations of the arithmetic Tutte polynomial and $G$-Tutte polynomial. A simple, but seems to be new convolution-like formula for the Ehrhart polynomials of lattice zonotopes will also be given.

In their study of the equivariant K-theory of the generalized flag varieties $G/P$, where $G$ is a complex semisimple Lie group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$, Lenart and Postnikov introduced a combinatorial tool, called the alcove paths model. It provides a model for the highest weight crystals with dominant integral highest weights, generalizing the model by semistandard Young tableaux. In this paper, we prove a simple and explicit formula describing the crystal isomorphism between the alcove paths model and the Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns model for type $A$.
