Log-concavity of matroid h-vectors and mixed Eulerian numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
For any matroid $M$, we compute the Tutte polynomial $T_M(x,y)$ using the mixed intersection numbers of certain classes in the combinatorial Chow ring $A^\bullet(M)$ arising from hypersimplices. Using the mixed Hodge-Riemann relations, we deduce a strengthening of the log-concavity of the $h$-vector of a matroid complex, improving on an old conjecture of Dawson.

Lagrangian geometry of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
We introduce the conormal fan of a matroid M, which is a Lagrangian analog of the Bergman fan of M. We use the conormal fan to give a Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M. This allows us to express the h-vector of the broken circuit complex of M in terms of the intersection theory of the conormal fan of M. We also develop general tools for tropical Hodge theory to prove that the conormal fan satisfies Poincaré duality, the hard Lefschetz theorem, and the Hodge-Riemann relations. The Lagrangian interpretation of the Chern-Schwartz-MacPherson cycle of M, when combined with the Hodge-Riemann relations for the conormal fan of M, implies Brylawski's and Dawson's conjectures that the h-vectors of the broken circuit complex and the independence complex of M are log-concave sequences.
Maximizing Determinants under Matroid Constraints

Given vectors $v_1,\dots,v_n\in\mathbb{R}^d$ and a matroid $M=([n],I)$, we study the problem of finding a basis $S$ of $M$ such that $\det(\sum_{i \in S}v_i v_i^\top)$ is maximized. This problem appears in a diverse set of areas such as experimental design, fair allocation of goods, network design, and machine learning. The current best results include an $e^{2k}$-estimation for any matroid of rank $k$ and a $(1+ε)^d$-approximation for a uniform matroid of rank $k\ge d+\frac dε$, where the rank $k\ge d$ denotes the desired size of the optimal set. Our main result is a new approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends only on the dimension $d$ of the vectors and not on the size $k$ of the output set. In particular, we show an $(O(d))^{d}$-estimation and an $(O(d))^{d^3}$-approximation for any matroid, giving a significant improvement over prior work when $k\gg d$. Our result relies on the existence of an optimal solution to a convex programming relaxation for the problem which has sparse support; in particular, no more than $O(d^2)$ variables of the solution have fractional values. The sparsity results rely on the interplay between the first-order optimality conditions for the convex program and matroid theory. We believe that the techniques introduced to show sparsity of optimal solutions to convex programs will be of independent interest. We also give a randomized algorithm that rounds a sparse fractional solution to a feasible integral solution to the original problem. To show the approximation guarantee, we utilize recent works on strongly log-concave polynomials and show new relationships between different convex programs studied for the problem. Finally, we use the estimation algorithm and sparsity results to give an efficient deterministic approximation algorithm with an approximation guarantee that depends solely on the dimension $d$.

Strictness of the log-concavity of generating polynomials of matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recently, it was proved by Anari-Oveis Gharan-Vinzant, Anari-Liu-Oveis Gharan-Vinzant and Brändén-Huh that, for any matroid $M$, its basis generating polynomial and its independent set generating polynomial are log-concave on the positive orthant. Using these, they obtain some combinatorial inequalities on matroids including a solution of strong Mason's conjecture. In this paper, we study the strictness of the log-concavity of these polynomials and determine when equality holds in these combinatorial inequalities. We also consider a generalization of our result to morphisms of matroids.
Exact Solutions in Log-Concave Maximum Likelihood Estimation
Published in Advances in Applied Mathematics, Volume 143, February 2023, 102448 • View PublicationBIB
We study probability density functions that are log-concave. Despite the space of all such densities being infinite-dimensional, the maximum likelihood estimate is the exponential of a piecewise linear function determined by finitely many quantities, namely the function values, or heights, at the data points. We explore in what sense exact solutions to this problem are possible. First, we show that the heights given by the maximum likelihood estimate are generically transcendental. For a cell in one dimension, the maximum likelihood estimator is expressed in closed form using the generalized W-Lambert function. Even more, we show that finding the log-concave maximum likelihood estimate is equivalent to solving a collection of polynomial-exponential systems of a special form. Even in the case of two equations, very little is known about solutions to these systems. As an alternative, we use Smale's alpha-theory to refine approximate numerical solutions and to certify solutions to log-concave density estimation.

Merged-log-concavity of rational functions, almost strictly unimodal sequences, and phase transitions of ideal boson-fermion gases
We obtain some new results on the unimodal sequences of the real values of rational functions by polynomials with positive integer coefficients. Thus, we introduce the notion of merged-log-concavity of rational functions. Roughly speaking, the notion extends Stanley's $q$-log-concavity of polynomials. We construct explicit merged-log-concave rational functions by $q$-binomial coefficients, Hadamard products, and convolutions, extending the Cauchy-Binet formula. Then, we obtain the unimodal sequences of rational functions by Young diagrams. Moreover, we consider the variation of unimodal sequences by critical points that separate strictly increasing, strictly decreasing, and hill-shape sequences among almost strictly unimodal sequences. Also, the critical points are zeros of polynomials in a suitable setting. The study above extends the $t$-power series of $(\pm t;q)_{\infty}^{\mp 1}$ to some extent by polynomials with positive integer coefficients and the variation of unimodal sequences. We then obtain the golden ratio of quantum dilogarithms ($q$-exponentials) as a critical point. Additionally, we consider eta products, generalized Narayana numbers, and weighted $q$-multinomial coefficients, which we introduce. In statistical mechanics, we discuss the grand canonical partition functions of some ideal boson-fermion gases with or without Casimir energies (Ramanujan summation). The merged-log-concavity gives phase transitions on Helmholtz free energies by critical points of the metallic ratios including the golden ratio. In particular, the phase transitions implies non-zero particle vacua from zero particle vacua as the temperature rises.

On cherry and pitchfork distributions of random rooted and unrooted phylogenetic trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
Tree shape statistics are important for investigating evolutionary mechanisms mediating phylogenetic trees. As a step towards bridging shape statistics between rooted and unrooted trees, we present a comparison study on two subtree statistics known as numbers of cherries and pitchforks for the proportional to distinguishable arrangements (PDA) and the Yule-Harding-Kingman (YHK) models. Based on recursive formulas on the joint distribution of the number of cherries and that of pitchforks, it is shown that cherry distributions are log-concave for both rooted and unrooted trees under these two models. Furthermore, the mean number of cherries and that of pitchforks for unrooted trees converge respectively to those for rooted trees under the YHK model while there exists a limiting gap of 1/4 for the PDA model. Finally, the total variation distances between the cherry distributions of rooted and those of unrooted trees converge for both models. Our results indicate that caution is required for conducting statistical analysis for tree shapes involving both rooted and unrooted trees.
Log-concavity results for a biparametric and an elliptic extension of the $q$-binomial coefficients
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish discrete and continuous log-concavity results for a biparametric extension of the $q$-numbers and of the $q$-binomial coefficients. By using classical results for the Jacobi theta function we are able to lift some of our log-concavity results to the elliptic setting. One of our main ingredients is a putatively new lemma involving a multiplicative analogue of Turán's inequality.

Log-concavity and log-convexity of moments of averages of i.i.d. random variables
Published in Canad. Math. Bull. 65 (2022), no. 2, 271--278 • View PublicationBIB
We show that the sequence of moments of order less than 1 of averages of i.i.d. positive random variables is log-concave. For moments of order at least 1, we conjecture that the sequence is log-convex and show that this holds eventually for integer moments (after neglecting the first $p^2$ terms of the sequence).

Analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we investigate analytic properties of sextet polynomials of hexagonal systems. For the pyrene chains, we show that zeros of the sextet polynomials $P_n(x)$ are real, located in the open interval $(-3-2\sqrt{2},-3+2\sqrt{2})$ and dense in the corresponding closed interval. We also show that coefficients of $P_n(x)$ are symmetric, unimodal, log-concave, and asymptotically normal. For general hexagonal systems, we show that real zeros of all sextet polynomials are dense in the interval $(-\infty,0]$, and conjecture that every sextet polynomial has log-concave coefficients.

Lorentzian polynomials from polytope projections
Published • View PublicationBIB
Lorentzian polynomials, recently introduced by Brändén and Huh, generalize the notion of log-concavity of sequences to homogeneous polynomials whose supports are integer points of generalized permutahedra. Brändén and Huh show that normalizations of polynomials equaling integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra are Lorentzian; moreover, normalizations of certain projections of integer point transforms of generalized permutahedra with zero-one vertices are also Lorentzian. Taking this polytopal perspective further, we show that normalizations of certain projections of integer point transforms of flow polytopes (which, before projection, are not Lorentzian), are also Lorentzian.

The r-central factorial numbers with even indices
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we introduce the $r$-central factorial numbers with even indices of the first and second kind, as extended versions of the central factorial numbers with even indices of both kinds. We obtain several fundamental properties and identities related to these numbers. We show that the unsigned $r$-central factorial numbers with even indices of the first kind are strictly log-concave and Poisson-binomially distributed . Finally, we consider the $r$-central factorial matrices and the factorization of it.

Quantitative combinatorial geometry for concave functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove several exact quantitative versions of Helly's and Tverberg's theorems, which guarantee that a finite family of convex sets in $R^d$ has a large intersection. Our results characterize conditions that are sufficient for the intersection of a family of convex sets to contain a "witness set" which is large under some concave or log-concave measure. The possible witness sets include ellipsoids, zonotopes, and $H$-convex sets. Our results also bound the complexity of finding the best approximation of a family of convex sets by a single zonotope or by a single $H$-convex set. We obtain colorful and fractional variants of all our Helly-type theorems.

Exact Formulae for the Fractional Partition Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition function $p(n)$ has been a testing ground for applications of analytic number theory to combinatorics. In particular, Hardy and Ramanujan invented the "circle method" to estimate the size of $p(n)$, which was later perfected by Rademacher who obtained an exact formula. Recently, Chan and Wang considered the fractional partition functions, defined by $\sum_{n = 0}^\infty p_α(n)x^n := \prod_{k=1}^\infty (1-x^k)^{-α}$. In this paper we use the Rademacher circle method to find an exact formula for $p_α(n)$ and study its implications, including log-concavity and the higher-order generalizations (i.e., the Turán inequalities) that $p_α(n)$ satisfies.

Logarithmic concavity for morphisms of matroids
Morphisms of matroids are combinatorial abstractions of linear maps and graph homomorphisms. We introduce the notion of basis for morphisms of matroids, and show that its generating function is strongly log-concave. As a consequence, we obtain a generalization of Mason's conjecture on the $f$-vectors of independent subsets of matroids to arbitrary morphisms of matroids. To establish this, we define multivariate Tutte polynomials of morphisms of matroids, and show that they are Lorentzian in the sense of [BH19] for sufficiently small positive parameters.

Simplicial generation of Chow rings of matroids
We introduce a presentation of the Chow ring of a matroid by a new set of generators, called "simplicial generators." These generators are analogous to nef divisors on projective toric varieties, and admit a combinatorial interpretation via the theory of matroid quotients. Using this combinatorial interpretation, we (i) produce a bijection between a monomial basis of the Chow ring and a relative generalization of Schubert matroids, (ii) recover the Poincaré duality property, (iii) give a formula for the volume polynomial, which we show is log-concave in the positive orthant, and (iv) recover the validity of Hodge-Riemann relations in degree 1, which is the part of the Hodge theory of matroids that currently accounts for all combinatorial applications of [AHK18]. Our work avoids the use of "flips," the key technical tool employed in [AHK18].

Antichain generating polynomials of posets
This paper gives a formula for the antichain generating polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ of the poset $[k]\times Q$, where $[k]$ is an arbitrary chain and $Q$ is any finite graded poset. When $Q$ specializes to be a connected minuscule poet, which was classified by Proctor in 1984, we find that the polynomial $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times Q}$ bears nice properties. For instance, we will recover the $B_n$-Narayana polynomial and the $D_{2n+2}$-Narayana polynomial. We collect evidence for the conjecture that whenever $\mathcal{N}_{[k]\times P}(x)$ is palindromic, it must be $γ$-positive. Moreover, the family $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [m]}$ should be real-rooted and $\mathcal{N}_{[2]\times [n]\times [n+1]}$ should be $γ$-positive. We also conjecture that $\mathcal{N}_{Q}(x)$ is log-concave (thus unimodal) for any connected Peck poset $Q$.
Asymptotic normality of the major index on standard tableaux
We consider the distribution of the major index on standard tableaux of arbitrary straight shape and certain skew shapes. We use cumulants to classify all possible limit laws for any sequence of such shapes in terms of a simple auxiliary statistic, aft, generalizing earlier results of Canfield--Janson--Zeilberger, Chen--Wang--Wang, and others. These results can be interpreted as giving a very precise description of the distribution of irreducible representations in different degrees of coinvariant algebras of certain complex reflection groups. We conclude with some conjectures concerning unimodality, log-concavity, and local limit theorems.

Strict log-concavity of the Kirchhoff polynomial and its applications to the strong Lefschetz property
Anari, Gharan, and Vinzant proved (complete) log-concavity of the basis generating functions for all matroids. From the viewpoint of combinatorial Hodge theory, it is natural to ask whether these functions are "strictly" log-concave for simple matroids. In this paper, we show this strictness for simple graphic matroids, that is, we show that Kirchhoff polynomials of simple graphs are strictly log-concave. Our key observation is that the Kirchhoff polynomial {of a complete graph} can be seen as the (irreducible) relative invariant of a certain prehomogeneous vector space, which may be independently interesting in its own right. Furthermore, we prove that for any $a_i\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$, $a_1x_1+\cdots+a_nx_n\in R^1_{M}$ satisfies the strong Lefschetz property (moreover, Hodge--Riemann bilinear relation) at degree one of the Artinian Gorenstein algebra $R^*_M$ associated to a graphic matroid $M$, which is defined by Maeno and Numata for all matroids.
