Stable-Limit Non-symmetric Macdonald Functions in Type A
We construct and study an explicit simultaneous $\mathscr{Y}$ eigenbasis of Ion and Wu's standard representation of the $^+$stable-limit double affine Hecke algebra for the limit Cherednik operators $\mathscr{Y}_i$. This basis arises as a generalization of Cherednik's non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials of type $GL_n$. We utilize links between $^+$stable-limit double affine Hecke algebra theory of Ion and Wu and the double Dyck path algebra of Carlsson and Mellit that arose in their proof of the Shuffle Conjecture. As a consequence, the spectral theory for the limit Cherednik operators is understood.

Toward Butler's conjecture
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a partition $ν$, let $λ,μ\subseteq ν$ be two distinct partitions such that $|ν/λ|=|ν/μ|=1$. Butler conjectured that the divided difference $\operatorname{I}_{λ,μ}[X;q,t]=(T_λ\widetilde{H}_μ[X;q,t]-T_μ\widetilde{H}_λ[X;q,t])/(T_λ-T_μ)$ of modified Macdonald polynomials of two partitions $λ$ and $μ$ is Schur positive. By introducing a new LLT equivalence called column exchange rule, we give a combinatorial formula for $\operatorname{I}_{λ,μ}[X;q,t]$, which is a positive monomial expansion. We also prove Butler's conjecture for some special cases.

Monk rules for type $GL_n$ Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we give Monk rules for Macdonald polynomials which are analogous to the Monk rules for Schubert polynomials. These formulas are similar to the formulas given by Baratta (2008), but our method of derivation is to use Cherednik's interwiners. Deriving Monk rules by this technique addresses the relationship between the work of Baratta and the product formulas of Yip (2010). Specializations of the Monk formula's at $q=0$ and/or $t=0$ provide Monk rules for Iwahori-spherical polynomials and for finite and affine key polynomials.

Set-valued tableaux for Macdonald polynomials
Set-valued tableaux formulas play an important role in Schubert calculus. Using the box greedy reduced word for the construction of the Macdonald polynomials, we convert the alcove walk formula for Macdonald polynomials to a set-valued tableaux formula for Macdonald polynomials. Our hope is that providing set-valued tableaux formulas for Macdonald polynomials will help to strengthen the analogies and possible connections between the calculus of Macdonald polynomials and Schubert calculus.

c-functions and Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
This is a paper about $c$-functions and Macdonald polynomials. There are $c$-function formulas for $E$-expansions of $P_λ$ and $A_{λ+ρ}$, principal specializations of $P_λ$ and $E_μ$, for Macdonald's constant term formulas, and for the norms of Macdonald polynomials. Most of these follow from the creation formulas for Macdonald polynomials, providing alternative proofs to several results from Macdonald (2003). In addition, we prove the Boson-Fermion correspondence in the Macdonald polynomial setting and the Weyl character formula for Macdonald polynomials.

Wreath Macdonald operators
Published in Forum Math. Sigma 13 (2025), Paper No. e116, 65 pp • View PublicationBIB
We construct a novel family of difference-permutation operators and prove that they are diagonalized by the wreath Macdonald $P$-polynomials; the eigenvalues are written in terms of elementary symmetric polynomials of arbitrary degree. Our operators arise from integral formulas for the action of the horizontal Heisenberg subalgebra in the vertex representation of the corresponding quantum toroidal algebra
Symmetric and Nonsymmetric Macdonald Polynomials via a Path Model with a Pseudo-crystal Structure
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we derive a counterpart of the well-known Ram-Yip formula for symmetric and nonsymmetric Macdonald polynomials of arbitrary type. Our new formula is in terms of a generalization of the Lakshmibai-Seshadri paths (originating in standard monomial theory), which we call pseudo-quantum Lakshmibai-Seshadri (LS) paths. This model carries less information than the alcove walks in the Ram-Yip formula, and it is therefore more efficient. Furthermore, we construct a connected pseudo-crystal structure on the pseudo-quantum LS paths, which is expected to lead to a simple Littlewood-Richardson rule for multiplying Macdonald polynomials. By contrast with the Kashiwara crystals, our pseudo-crystals have edges labeled by arbitrary roots.

The AFLT $q$-Morris constant term identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the Selberg integral is equivalent to the Morris constant term identity. More generally, Selberg type integrals can be turned into constant term identities for Laurent polynomials. In this paper, by extending the Gessel--Xin method of the Laurent series proof of constant term identities, we obtain an AFLT type $q$-Morris constant term identity. That is a $q$-Morris type constant term identity for a product of two Macdonald polynomials.

Symmetric function generalizations of the $q$-Baker--Forrester ex-conjecture and Selberg-type integrals
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is well-known that the famous Selberg integral is equivalent to the Morris constant term identity. In 1998, Baker and Forrester conjectured a generalization of the $q$-Morris constant term identity. This conjecture was proved and extended by Károlyi, Nagy, Petrov and Volkov in 2015. In this paper, we obtain two symmetric function generalizations of the $q$-Baker--Forrester ex-conjecture. These includes: (i) a $q$-Baker--Forrester type constant term identity for a product of a complete symmetric function and a Macdonald polynomial; (ii) a complete symmetric function generalization of KNPV's result.

Bijective proofs of some coinversion identities related to Macdonald polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
This paper gives bijective proofs of some novel coinversion identities first discovered by Ayyer, Mandelshtam, and Martin (arxiv:2011.06117) as part of their proof of a new combinatorial formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials $\tilde{H}_μ$. Those authors used intricate algebraic manipulations of $q$-binomial coefficients to prove these identities, which imply the existence of certain bijections needed in their proof that their formula satisfies the axioms characterizing $\tilde{H}_μ$. They posed the open problem of constructing such bijections explicitly. We resolve that problem here.

Modified Macdonald polynomials and the multispecies zero range process: II
Published in Mathematische Zeitschrift, Vol 308 no. 31, (2024) 31, 45pp • View PublicationBIB
In a previous part of this work, we gave a new tableau formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;q,t)$, using a weight on tableaux involving the \emph{queue inversion} (quinv) statistic. In this paper we explicitly describe a connection between these combinatorial objects and a class of multispecies totally asymmetric zero range processes (mTAZRP) on a ring, with site-dependent jump-rates. We construct a Markov chain on the space of tableaux of a given shape, which projects to the mTAZRP, and whose stationary distribution can be expressed in terms of quinv-weighted tableaux. We deduce that the mTAZRP has a partition function given by the modified Macdonald polynomial $\widetilde{H}_λ(X;1,t)$. The novelty here in comparison to previous works relating the stationary distribution of integrable systems to symmetric functions is that the variables $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ are explicitly present as hopping rates in the mTAZRP. We also obtain interesting symmetry properties of the mTAZRP probabilities under permutation of the jump-rates between the sites. Finally, we explore a number of interesting special cases of the mTAZRP, and give explicit formulas for particle densities and correlations of the process purely in terms of modified Macdonald polynomials.

q-Whittaker functions, finite fields, and Jordan forms
Published • View PublicationBIB
The $q$-Whittaker function $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ associated to a partition $λ$ is a $q$-analogue of the Schur function $s_λ(\mathbf{x})$, and is defined as the $t=0$ specialization of the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(\mathbf{x};q,t)$. We show combinatorially how to expand $W_λ(\mathbf{x};q)$ in terms of partial flags compatible with a nilpotent endomorphism over the finite field of size $1/q$. This yields an expression analogous to a well-known formula for the Hall-Littlewood functions. We show that considering pairs of partial flags and taking Jordan forms leads to a probabilistic bijection between nonnegative-integer matrices and pairs of semistandard tableaux of the same shape, proving the Cauchy identity for $q$-Whittaker functions. We call our probabilistic bijection the $q$-Burge correspondence, and prove that in the limit as $q\to 0$, we recover a description of the classical Burge correspondence (also known as column RSK) due to Rosso (2012). A key step in the proof is the enumeration of an arbitrary double coset of $\text{GL}_n$ modulo two parabolic subgroups, which we find to be of independent interest. As an application, we use the $q$-Burge correspondence to count isomorphism classes of certain modules over the preprojective algebra of a type $A$ quiver (i.e. a path), refined according to their socle filtrations. This develops a connection between the combinatorics of symmetric functions and the representation theory of preprojective algebras.

$m$-Symmetric functions, non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials and positivity conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the space, $R_m$, of $m$-symmetric functions consisting of polynomials that are symmetric in the variables $x_{m+1},x_{m+2},x_{m+3},\dots$ but have no special symmetry in the variables $x_1,\dots,x_m$. We obtain $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials by $t$-symmetrizing non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials, and show that they form a basis of $R_m$. We define $m$-symmetric Schur functions through a somewhat complicated process involving their dual basis, tableaux combinatorics, and the Hecke algebra generators, and then prove some of their most elementary properties. We conjecture that the $m$-symmetric Macdonald polynomials (suitably normalized and plethystically modified) expand positively in terms of $m$-symmetric Schur functions. We obtain relations on the $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$ in the $m$-symmetric world, and show in particular that the usual $(q,t)$-Koska coefficients are special cases of the $K_{ΩΛ}(q,t)$'s. Finally, we show that when $m$ is large, the positivity conjecture, modulo a certain subspace, becomes a positivity conjecture on the expansion of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials in terms of non-symmetric Hall-Littlewood polynomials.

Haglund's positivity conjecture for multiplicity one pairs
Haglund's conjecture states that $\dfrac{\langle J_λ(q,q^k),s_μ\rangle}{(1-q)^{|λ|}} \in \mathbb{Z}_{\geq 0}[q]$ for all partitions $λ,μ$ and all non-negative integers $k$, where $J_λ$ is the integral form Macdonald symmetric function and $s_μ$ is the Schur function. This paper proves Haglund's conjecture in the cases when the pair $(λ,μ)$ satisfies $K_{λ,μ}=1$ or $K_{μ',λ'}=1$ where $K$ denotes the Kostka number. We also obtain some general results about the transition matrix between Macdonald symmetric functions and Schur functions.

Noncolliding Macdonald Walks with an Absorbing Wall
Published in SIGMA 18 (2022), 079, 21 pages • View PublicationBIB
The branching rule is one of the most fundamental properties of the Macdonald symmetric polynomials. It expresses a Macdonald polynomial as a nonnegative linear combination of Macdonald polynomials with smaller number of variables. Taking a limit of the branching rule under the principal specialization when the number of variables goes to infinity, we obtain a Markov chain of $m$ noncolliding particles with negative drift and an absorbing wall at zero. The chain depends on the Macdonald parameters $(q,t)$ and may be viewed as a discrete deformation of the Dyson Brownian motion. The trajectory of the Markov chain is equivalent to a certain Gibbs ensemble of plane partitions with an arbitrary cascade front wall. In the Jack limit $t=q^{β/2}\to 1$ the absorbing wall disappears, and the Macdonald noncolliding walks turn into the $β$-noncolliding random walks studied by Huang [Int. Math. Res. Not. 2021 (2021), 5898-5942, arXiv:1708.07115]. Taking $q=0$ (Hall-Littlewood degeneration) and further sending $t\to 1$, we obtain a continuous time particle system on $\mathbb{Z}_{\ge 0}$ with inhomogeneous jump rates and absorbing wall at zero.

Representation theoretic interpretation and interpolation properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We establish new properties of inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which are symmetric polynomials generalizing $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We show that these polynomials are defined in terms of a vertex model, whose weights come not from an $R$-matrix, as is often the case, but from other intertwining operators of $U'_q(\hat{\mathfrak{sl}}_2)$-modules. Using this construction, we are able to prove a Cauchy-type identity for inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in full generality. Moreover, we are able to characterize spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials in terms of vanishing at certain points, and we find interpolation analogues of $q$-Whittaker and elementary symmetric polynomials.

A proof of the $\frac{n!}{2}$ conjecture for hook shapes
Published • View PublicationBIB
A well-known representation-theoretic model for the transformed Macdonald polynomial $\widetilde{H}_μ(Z;t,q)$, where $μ$ is an integer partition, is given by the Garsia-Haiman module $\mathcal{H}_μ$. We study the $\frac{n!}{k}$ conjecture of Bergeron and Garsia, which concerns the behavior of certain $k$-tuples of Garsia-Haiman modules under intersection. In the special case that $μ$ has hook shape, we use a basis for $\mathcal{H}_μ$ due to Adin, Remmel, and Roichman to resolve the $\frac{n!}{2}$ conjecture by constructing an explicit basis for the intersection of two Garsia-Haiman modules.

From boxes to polynomials: a story of generalisation
Published • View PublicationBIB
Here we will embark on a journey starting with some ostensibly inauspicious boxes. Carefully stacking them in different ways yields amazing identities. From humble beginnings at the integer version: `how many steps does it take to get from row $i$ to row $j$?' to the first upgrade: the polynomial version, before finally reaching the final upgrade: the elliptic version. Each upgrade gives a more general theorem than before. Secretly, everything is controlled by the symmetric Macdonald polynomials. Setting $q = t$ in the Macdonald polynomial takes the elliptic version of the theorem to the polynomial version. Then, letting $t$ approach $1$ reduces the polynomial version to the integer version. All the beautiful theorems and ideas come merely from stacking boxes.

The combinatorics of hopping particles and positivity in Markov chains
The asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) is a model for translation in protein synthesis and traffic flow; it can be defined as a Markov chain describing particles hopping on a one-dimensional lattice. In this article I give an overview of some of the connections of the stationary distribution of the ASEP to combinatorics (tableaux and multiline queues) and special functions (Askey-Wilson polynomials, Macdonald polynomials, and Schubert polynomials). I also make some general observations about positivity in Markov chains.
