Noncommutative chromatic quasi-symmetric functions, Macdonald polynomials, and the Yang-Baxter equation
As shown in our paper [JCTA 177 (2021), Paper No. 105305], the chromatic quasi-symmetric function of Shareshian-Wachs can be lifted to ${\bf WQSym}$, the algebra of quasi-symmetric functions in noncommuting variables. We investigate here its behaviour with respect to classical transformations of alphabets and propose a noncommutative analogue of Macdonald polynomials compatible with a noncommutative version of the Haglund-Wilson formula. We also introduce a multi-$t$ version of these noncommutative analogues. For rectangular partitions, their commutative images at $q=0$ appear to coincide with the multi-$t$ Hall-Littlewood functions introduced in [Lett. Math. Phys. 35 (1995), 359]. This leads us to conjecture that for rectangular partitions, multi-$t$ Macdonald polynomials are obtained as equivariant traces of certain Yang-Baxter elements of Hecke algebras. We also conjecture that all (ordinary) Macdonald polynomials can be obtained in this way. We conclude with some remarks relating various aspects of quasi-symmetric chromatic functions to calculations in Hecke algebras. In particular, we show that all modular relations are given by the product formula of the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis.

Orthogonality of spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials
The inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials are a family of symmetric polynomials which generalize the Macdonald polynomials at $t=0$. In this paper we prove that they are orthogonal with respect to a variant of the Sklyanin measure on the $n$ dimensional torus and as a result they form a basis of the space of symmetric polynomials in $n$ variables. Instrumental to the proof are inhomogeneous eigenrelations, which partially generalize those of Macdonald polynomials. We also consider several special cases of the inhomogeneous spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, which include variants of symmetric Grothendieck polynomials or spin Whittaker functions.

Domino Tilings, Domino Shuffling, and the Nabla Operator
We study domino tilings of certain regions $R_λ$, indexed by partitions $λ$, weighted according to generalized area and dinv statistics. These statistics arise from the $q,t$-Catalan combinatorics and Macdonald polynomials. We present a formula for the generating polynomial of these domino tilings in terms of the Bergeron--Garsia nabla operator. When $λ= (n^n)$ is a square shape, domino tilings of $R_λ$ are equivalent to those of the Aztec diamond of order $n$. In this case, we give a new product formula for the resulting polynomials by domino shuffling and its connection with alternating sign matrices. In particular, we obtain a combinatorial proof of the joint symmetry of the generalized area and dinv statistics.

$c$-functions and Koornwinder polynomials
This paper develops the theory of Macdonald-Koornwinder polynomials in parallel analogy with the work done for the $GL_n$ case in [CR22]. In the context of the type $CC_n$ affine root system the Macdonald polynomials of other root systems of classical type are specializations of the Koornwinder polynomials. We derive $c$-function formulas for symmetrizers and use them to give $E$-expansions, principal specializations and norm formulas for bosonic, mesonic and fermionic Koornwinder polynomials. Finally, we explain the proof of the norm conjectures and constant term conjectures for the Koornwinder case.

Stable-limit partially symmetric Macdonald functions and parabolic flag Hilbert schemes
The modified Macdonald functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ are fundamental objects in modern algebraic combinatorics. Haiman showed that there is a correspondence between the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed points $I_μ$ of the Hilbert schemes $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and the functions $\widetilde{H}_μ$ realizing a derived equivalence between $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $\mathrm{Hilb}_{n}(\mathbb{C}^2)$ and $(\mathfrak{S}_n \times (\mathbb{C}^{*})^2)$-equivariant coherent sheaves on $(\mathbb{C}^2)^n.$ Carlsson--Gorsky--Mellit introduced a larger family of smooth projective varieties $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ called the parabolic flag Hilbert schemes. They showed that an algebra $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$, directly related to the double Dyck path algebra $\mathbb{A}_{q,t}$ employed in Carlsson--Mellit's proof of the Shuffle Theorem, acts naturally on the $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-equivariant K-theory $U_{\bullet}$ of these spaces and, moreover, there is a $\mathbb{B}_{q,t}$-isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ where $V_{\bullet}$ is the polynomial representation. The isomorphism $Φ: U_{\bullet} \rightarrow V_{\bullet}$ is known to extend Haiman's correspondence. In this paper, we explicitly compute the images $Φ(H_{μ,w})$ of the normalized $(\mathbb{C}^{*})^2$-fixed point classes $H_{μ,w}$ of the spaces $\mathrm{PFH}_{n,n-k}$ and show they agree with the modified partially symmetric Macdonald polynomials $\widetilde{H}_{(λ|γ)}$ introduced by Goodberry-Orr, confirming their prior conjecture. We use this result to give an explicit formula for the action of the involution $\mathcal{N}$ on $V_{\bullet}.$

Memories of Ian G. Macdonald

This is a slightly edited translation of a paper in Dutch which appeared in Nieuw Archief voor Wiskunde (5) 25 (2024), No.2, 87-90 on the occasion of I.G. Macdonald's death in 2023, and aimed at a very broad mathematical audience. First we review some of Macdonald's most important older results. Then we focus on the period 1985-1995 when Macdonald often visited the Netherlands and there was much interaction between his work, notably the Macdonald polynomials, and the work by the authors. We end with some glimpses about Macdonald as a person.

Wreath Macdonald polynomials, quiver varieties, and quasimap counts
We study the $K$-theoretic enumerative geometry of cyclic Nakajima quiver varieties, with particular focus on $\text{Hilb}^{m}([\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{l}])$, the equivariant Hilbert scheme of points on $\mathbb{C}^2$. The direct sum over $m$ of the equivariant $K$-theories of these varieties is known to be isomorphic to the ring symmetric functions in $l$ colors, with structure sheaves of torus fixed points identified with wreath Macdonald polynomials. Using properties of wreath Macdonald polynomials and the recent identification of the Maulik-Okounkov quantum affine algebra for cyclic quivers with the quantum toroidal algebras of type $A$, we derive an explicit formula for the generating function of capped vertex functions of $\text{Hilb}^{m}([\mathbb{C}^{2}/\mathbb{Z}_{l}])$ with descendants given by exterior powers of the $0$th tautological bundle. We also sharpen the large framing vanishing results of Okounkov, providing a class of descendants and cyclic quiver varieties for which the capped vertex functions are purely classical. Our results also suggest certain integrality and wall-crossing conjectures for capped vertex functions.

Extending the science fiction and the Loehr--Warrington formula
We introduce the Macdonald piece polynomial $\operatorname{I}_{μ,λ,k}[X;q,t]$, which is a vast generalization of the Macdonald intersection polynomial in the science fiction conjecture by Bergeron and Garsia. We demonstrate a remarkable connection between $\operatorname{I}_{μ,λ,k}$, $\nabla s_λ$, and the Loehr--Warrington formula $\operatorname{LW}_λ$, thereby obtaining the Loehr--Warrington conjecture as a corollary. To connect $\operatorname{I}_{μ,λ,k}$ and $\nabla s_λ$, we employ the plethystic formula for the Macdonald polynomials of Garsia--Haiman--Tesler, and to connect $\operatorname{I}_{μ,λ,k}$ and $\operatorname{LW}_λ$, we use our new findings on the combinatorics of $P$-tableaux together with the column exchange rule. We also present an extension of the science fiction conjecture and the Macdonald positivity by exploiting $\operatorname{I}_{μ,λ,k}$.

Modified Macdonald polynomials and mu-Mahonian statistics
The Haglund--Haiman--Loehr theorem provides the following combinatorial formula for the modified Macdonald polynomials: $$\tilde{H}_μ(X;q,t)=\sum_{σ: μ\rightarrow \mathbb{P}}x^σt^{maj(σ)}q^{inv(σ)}.$$ Inspired by Martin's multiline-queue formula for the stationary distribution of multitype asymmetric simple exclusion processes, Corteel, Haglund, Mandelshtam, Mason and Williams recently introduced the queue inversion statistic $quinv$ and conjectured that the tableaux formula for $\tilde{H}_μ(X;q,t)$ is invariant if the inversion statistic $inv$ is replaced by $quinv$. This was subsequently resolved by Ayyer, Mandelshtam and Martin, who proposed a stronger conjecture on the equivalence of the two refined formulas for $\tilde{H}_μ(X;q,t)$. Our main result confirms this Ayyer--Mandelshtam--Martin conjecture. We establish an equidistribution between the pairs $(inv, maj)$ and $(quinv, maj)$ of $μ$-Mahonian statistics on any row-equivalency class $[τ]$, where $τ$ is a filling of the Young diagram of $μ$. As a byproduct of our approach, we show that if $τ$ is a rectangular filling, the triples $(inv, quinv, maj)$ and $(quinv, inv, maj)$ have the same distribution over $[τ]$.

Macdonald polynomials at t = 0 through twisted multiline queues
Multiline queues are versatile combinatorial objects that play a key role in understanding the remarkable connection between the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) on a circle and Macdonald polynomials. Specializing the results of Corteel--Mandelshtam--Williams (2018) to the $t=0$ case yields a formula for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials through the Ferrari--Martin (2007) algorithm with a major index ($\texttt{maj}$) statistic. In this paper, we reinterpret the $\texttt{maj}$ statistic as a $\texttt{charge}$ statistic on reading words, thereby bypassing the Ferrari--Martin algorithm to obtain an elegant formula for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials. Our methods naturally extend to the case of bosonic multiline queues, with which we obtain analogous results for the modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials using a $\texttt{cocharge}$ statistic on reading words. Twisted multiline queues (GMLQs) are obtained from the action of the symmetric group on the rows of a multiline queue. The Ferrari--Martin algorithm was extended to GMLQs by Arita--Ayyer--Mallick--Prolhac (2011), and Aas--Grinberg--Scrimshaw (2020) showed it is preserved under this action. We extend these results by defining a $\texttt{maj}$ statistic on GMLQs that is also preserved under this action. This yields a novel family of formulas, indexed by compositions, for the $q$-Whittaker polynomials. Additionally, we define a procedure on both GMLQs and bosonic multiline queues that we call collapsing, which can can be realized via the Kashiwara (crystal) operators on type-A Kirillov--Reshetikhin crystals. As an application, we naturally recover the Lascoux--Schützenberger $\texttt{charge}$ formula for the $q$-Whittaker and modified Hall--Littlewood polynomials, and the classical and dual Cauchy identities for Schur functions.
Elliptic Deformation of the Gaiotto-Rapčák Corner VOA and the Associated Partially Symmetric Polynomials
We construct the elliptic Miura transformation and use it to obtain the expression of the currents of elliptic corner VOA. We subsequently prove a novel combinatorial formula that is essential for deriving the quadratic relations of the currents. In addition, we give a conjecture that relates the correlation function of the currents of elliptic corner VOA to a certain family of partially symmetric polynomials. The elliptic Macdonald polynomials, constructed recently by Awata-Kanno-Mironov-Morozov-Zenkevich, and Fukuda-Ohkubo-Shiraishi, can be obtained as a particular case of this family.

Capped Vertex Functions for $\text{Hilb}^n (\mathbb{C}^2)$
We obtain explicit formulas for capped descendent vertex functions of $\text{Hilb}^n(\mathbb{C}^2)$ for descendents given by the exterior algebra of the tautological bundle. This formula provides a one-parametric deformation of the generating function for normalized Macdonald polynomials. In particular, we show that the capped vertex functions are rational functions of the quantum parameter.
From quasi-symmetric to Schur expansions with applications to symmetric chain decompositions and plethysm
Published in Electronic J. Comb. 31(4) (2024) #P4.23 • View PublicationBIB
It is an important problem in algebraic combinatorics to deduce the Schur function expansion of a symmetric function whose expansion in terms of the fundamental quasisymmetric function is known. For example, formulas are known for the fundamental expansion of a Macdonald symmetric function and for the plethysm of two Schur functions, while the Schur expansions of these expressions are still elusive. Egge, Loehr and Warrington provided a method to obtain the Schur expansion from the fundamental expansion by replacing each quasisymmetric function by a Schur function (not necessarily indexed by a partition) and using straightening rules to obtain the Schur expansion. Here we provide a new method that only involves the coefficients of the quasisymmetric functions indexed by partitions and the quasi-Kostka matrix. As an application, we identify the lexicographically largest term in the Schur expansion of the plethysm of two Schur functions. We provide the Schur expansion of $s_w[s_h](x,y)$ for $w=2,3,4$ using novel symmetric chain decompositions of Young's lattice for partitions in a $w\times h$ box. For $w=4$, this is first known combinatorial expression for the coefficient of $s_λ$ in $s_{w}[s_{h}]$ for two-row partitions $λ$, and for $w=3$ the combinatorial expression is new.

Macdonald characters from a new formula for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a new operator $Γ$ on symmetric functions, which enables us to obtain a creation formula for Macdonald polynomials. This formula provides a connection between the theory of Macdonald operators initiated by Bergeron, Garsia, Haiman and Tesler, and shifted Macdonald polynomials introduced by Knop, Lassalle, Okounkov and Sahi. We use this formula to introduce a two-parameter generalization of Jack characters, which we call Macdonald characters. Finally, we provide a change of variables in order to formulate several positivity conjectures related to these generalized characters. Our conjectures extend some important open problems on Jack polynomials, including some famous conjectures of Goulden and Jackson.

Growth diagram proofs for the Littlewood identities
The (dual) Cauchy identity has an easy algebraic proof utilising a commutation relation between the up and (dual) down operators. By using Fomin's growth diagrams, a bijective proof of the commutation relation can be "bijectivised" to obtain RSK like correspondences. In this paper we give a concise overview of this machinery and extend it to Littlewood type identities by introducing a new family of relations between these operators, called projection identities. Thereby we obtain infinite families of bijections for the Littlewood identities generalising the classical ones. We believe that this approach will be useful for finding bijective proofs for Littlewood type identities in other settings such as for Macdonald polynomials and their specialisations, alternating sign matrices or vertex models.

$qt$RSK${}^*$: A probabilistic dual RSK correspondence for Macdonald polynomials
We introduce a probabilistic generalization of the dual Robinson--Schensted--Knuth correspondence, called $qt$RSK${}^*$, depending on two parameters $q$ and $t$. This correspondence extends the $q$RS$t$ correspondence, recently introduced by the authors, and allows the first tableaux-theoretic proof of the dual Cauchy identity for Macdonald polynomials. By specializing $q$ and $t$, one recovers the row and column insertion version of the classical dual RSK correspondence as well as of $q$- and $t$-deformations thereof which are connected to $q$-Whittaker and Hall--Littlewood polynomials. When restricting to Jack polynomials and $\{0,1\}$-matrices corresponding to words, we prove that the insertion tableaux obtained by $qt$RSK${}^*$ are invariant under swapping letters in the input word. Our approach is based on Fomin's growth diagrams and the notion of probabilistic bijections.

The inhomogeneous $t$-PushTASEP and Macdonald polynomials
We study a multispecies $t$-PushTASEP system on a finite ring of $n$ sites with site-dependent rates $x_1,\dots,x_n$. Let $λ=(λ_1,\dots,λ_n)$ be a partition whose parts represent the species of the $n$ particles on the ring. We show that for each composition $η$ obtained by permuting the parts of $λ$, the stationary probability of being in state $η$ is proportional to the ASEP polynomial $F_η(x_1,\dots,x_n; q,t)$ at $q=1$; the normalizing constant (or partition function) is the Macdonald polynomial $P_λ(x_1,\dots,x_n;q,t)$ at $q=1$. Our approach involves new relations between the families of ASEP polynomials and of non-symmetric Macdonald polynomials at $q=1$. We also use multiline diagrams, showing that a single jump of the PushTASEP system is closely related to the operation of moving from one line to the next in a multiline diagram. We derive symmetry properties for the system under permutation of its jump rates, as well as a formula for the current of a single-species system.

Interpolation Polynomials, Binomial Coefficients, and Symmetric Function Inequalities
Interpolation polynomials were introduced by Knop--Sahi in type $A$, and Okounkov in type $BC$. They are inhomogeneous polynomials whose top terms are Jack and Macdonald polynomials. Thus the expansion coefficients for the product of two interpolation polynomials, known as Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, generalize the corresponding coefficients for Jack/Macdonald polynomials. Special values of interpolation polynomials, known as binomial coefficients, arise in the binomial type expansions of Jack/Macdonald polynomials and Koornwinder polynomials. We prove a number of results for interpolation polynomials and the associated coefficients. These include positivity and monotonicity results for binomial coefficients, partial positivity results for Littlewood--Richardson coefficients, and weighted sum formulas for both kinds of coefficients. As a special case of our results we obtain a new symmetric function inequality, which establishes a ``duality'' between Jack expansion positivity for symmetric functions, and the containment order on partitions, with respect to the shifted basis $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x;τ)$, where ${\bf1} =(1,\ldots,1)$ and $Ω_λ(x;τ)=P_λ(x;τ)/P_λ({\bf1};τ)$ is the normalized Jack polynomial. Our inequality can be seen as an analog of the inequalities of Cuttler--Greene--Skandera+Sra and Khare--Tao, which establish similar dualities between evaluation positivity on the positive orthant, and the dominance and weak dominance orders on partitions, with respect to the normalized Schur basis $Ω_λ(x)=s_λ(x)/s_λ({\bf1})$ and its shifted version $Ω_λ({\bf1}+x)$, respectively. In contrast to our result, the Jack versions of the two latter inequalities, although expected to hold, have not yet been proved.

Lusztig varieties and Macdonald polynomials
This paper uses Lusztig varieties to give central elements of the Iwahori-Hecke algebra corresponding to unipotent conjugacy classes in the finite Chevalley group $GL_n(\mathbb{F}_q)$. We explain how these central elements are related to Macdonald polynomials and how this provides a framework for generalizing integral form and modified Macdonald polynomials to Lie types other than $GL_n$. The key steps are to recognize (a) that counting points in Lusztig varieties is equivalent to computing traces on the Hecke algebras, (b) that traces on the Hecke algebra determine elements of the center of the Hecke algebra, (c) that the Geck-Rouquier basis elements of the center of the Hecke algebra produce an `expansion matrix', (d) that the parabolic subalgebras of the Hecke algebra produce a `contraction matrix' and (e) that the combination `expansion-contraction' is the plethystic transformation that relates integral form Macdonald polynomials and modified Macdonald polynomials.

Symmetric functions and the explicit moment problem for abelian groups
Recently, Sawin and Wood (arXiv:math/2210.06279) proved a formula for the distribution of a random abelian group $G$ in terms of its $H$-moments $\mathbb{E} [\#\operatorname{Sur}(G,H)]$. We show that properties of Macdonald polynomials yield an alternate proof.
