Degenerations and multiplicity-free formulas for products of $ψ$ and $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider products of $ψ$ classes and products of $ω$ classes on $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$. For each product, we construct a flat family of subschemes of $\overline{M}_{0,n+3}$ whose general fiber is a complete intersection representing the product, and whose special fiber is a generically reduced union of boundary strata. Our construction is built up inductively as a sequence of one-parameter degenerations, using an explicit parametrized collection of hyperplane sections. Combinatorially, our construction expresses each product as a positive, multiplicity-free sum of classes of boundary strata. These are given by a combinatorial algorithm on trees we call 'slide labeling'. As a corollary, we obtain a combinatorial formula for the $κ$ classes in terms of boundary strata. For degree-$n$ products of $ω$ classes, the special fiber is a finite reduced union of (boundary) points, and its cardinality is one of the multidegrees of the corresponding embedding $Ω_n: \overline{M}_{0,n+3}\to \mathbb{P}^1\times \cdots \times \mathbb{P}^n$. In the case of the product $ω_1\cdots ω_n$, these points exhibit a connection to permutation pattern avoidance. Finally, we show that in certain cases, a prior interpretation of the multidegrees via tournaments can also be obtained by degenerations.

Perfect models for finite Coxeter groups
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra 227 (2023), 107303 • View PublicationBIB
A model for a finite group is a set of linear characters of subgroups that can be induced to obtain every irreducible character exactly once. A perfect model for a finite Coxeter group is a model in which the relevant subgroups are the quasiparabolic centralizers of perfect involutions. In prior work, we showed that perfect models give rise to interesting examples of $W$-graphs. Here, we classify which finite Coxeter groups have perfect models. Specifically, we prove that the irreducible finite Coxeter groups with perfect models are those of types $\mathsf{A}_{n}$, $\mathsf{B}_n$, $\mathsf{D}_{2n+1}$, $\mathsf{H}_3$, or $\mathsf{I}_2(n)$. We also show that up to a natural form of equivalence, outside types $\mathsf{A}_3$, $\mathsf{B}_n$, and $\mathsf{H}_3$, each irreducible finite Coxeter group has at most one perfect model. Along the way, we also prove a technical result about representations of finite Coxeter groups, namely, that induction from standard parabolic subgroups of corank at least two is never multiplicity-free.

Multiplicity-Free Gonality on Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The divisorial gonality of a graph is the minimum degree of a positive rank divisor on that graph. We introduce the multiplicity-free gonality of a graph, which restricts our consideration to divisors that place at most \(1\) chip on each vertex. We give a sufficient condition in terms of vertex-connectivity for these two versions of gonality to be equal; and we show that no function of gonality can bound multiplicity-free gonality, even for simple graphs. We also prove that multiplicity-free gonality is NP-hard to compute, while still determining it for graph families for which gonality is currently unknown. We also present new gonalities, such as for the wheel graphs.

Prime power variations of higher $Lie_n$ modules
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A 184C (2021) 105512 • View PublicationBIB
We define, for each subset $S$ of the set $\mathcal{P}$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. $Lie_n^\emptyset$ is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra, while $Lie_n^\mathcal{P}$ is the module $C\!onj_n$ of the conjugacy action of $S_n$ on $n$-cycles. For arbitrary $S$ the module $Lie_n^{S}$ interpolates between the representations $Lie_n$ and $C\!onj_n.$ We consider the symmetric and exterior powers of $Lie_n^S.$ These are the analogues of the higher Lie modules of Thrall. We show that the Frobenius characteristic of these higher $Lie_n^S$ modules can be elegantly expressed as a multiplicity-free sum of power sums. In particular this establishes the Schur positivity of new classes of sums of power sums. More generally, for each nonempty subset $T$ of positive integers we define a sequence of symmetric functions $f_n^T$ of homogeneous degree $n.$ We show that the series $\sum_{λ, λ_i\in T} p_λ$ can be expressed as symmetrised powers of the functions $f_n^T$, analogous to the higher Lie modules first defined by Thrall. This in turn allows us to unify previous results on the Schur positivity of multiplicity-free sums of power sums, as well as investigate new ones. We also uncover some curious plethystic relationships between $f_n^T$, the conjugacy action and the Lie representation.
Hopf monoids of ordered simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study pure ordered simplicial complexes (i.e., simplicial complexes with a linear order on their ground sets) from the Hopf-theoretic point of view. We define a \textit{Hopf class} to be a family of pure ordered simplicial complexes that give rise to a Hopf monoid under join and deletion/contraction. The prototypical Hopf class is the family of ordered matroids. The idea of a Hopf class allows us to give a systematic study of simplicial complexes related to matroids, including shifted complexes, broken-circuit complexes, and \textit{unbounded matroids} (which arise from unbounded generalized permutohedra with 0/1 coordinates). We compute the antipodes in two cases: \textit{facet-initial complexes} (a much larger class than shifted complexes) and unbounded ordered matroids. In the latter case, we embed the Hopf monoid of ordered matroids into the Hopf monoid of ordered generalized permutohedra, enabling us to compute the antipode using the topological method of Aguiar and Ardila. The calculation is complicated by the appearance of certain auxiliary simplicial complexes that we call \textit{Scrope complexes}, whose Euler characteristics control certain coefficients of the antipode. The resulting antipode formula is multiplicity-free and cancellation-free.

Multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a non-recursive, combinatorial classification of multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials. These polynomials are $GL_n$, and $SL_n$, characters of the skew Schur modules. Our result extends work of H. Thomas--A. Yong, and C. Gutschwager, in which they classify the multiplicity-free skew Schur functions.

Flip actions and Gelfand pairs for affine Weyl groups
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several combinatorial actions of the affine Weyl group of type $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ on triangulations, trees, words and permutations are compared. Addressing a question of David Vogan, we show that, modulo a natural involution, these permutation representations are multiplicity-free. The proof uses a general construction of Gelfand subgroups in the affine Weyl groups of types $\widetilde{C}_{n}$ and $\widetilde{B}_n$.

Multiplicity-free key polynomials
Published in Ann. Comb. 27 (2023), no. 2, 387-411 • View PublicationBIB
The key polynomials, defined by A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger, are characters for the Demazure modules of type A. We classify multiplicity-free key polynomials. The proof uses two combinatorial models for key polynomials. The first is due to A. Kohnert. The second is by S. Assaf-D. Searles, in terms of quasi-key polynomials. Our argument proves a sufficient condition for a quasi-key polynomial to be multiplicity-free.

Strong Gelfand subgroups of $F\wr S_n$
Published in Internat. J. Math., 32 (2021), no. 2, 2150010 • View PublicationBIB
The multiplicity-free subgroups (strong Gelfand subgroups) of wreath products are investigated. Various useful reduction arguments are presented. In particular, we show that for every finite group $F$, the wreath product $F\wr S_λ$, where $S_λ$ is a Young subgroup, is multiplicity-free if and only if $λ$ is a partition with at most two parts, the second part being 0,1, or 2. Furthermore, we classify all multiplicity-free subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups. Along the way, we derive various decomposition formulas for the induced representations from some special subgroups of hyperoctahedral groups.
Hopf monoids of ordered simplicial complexes
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study ordered matroids and generalized permutohedra from a Hopf theoretic point of view. Our main object is a Hopf monoid in the vector species of extended generalized permutahedra equipped with an order of the coordinates; this monoid extends the Hopf monoid of generalized permutahedra studied by Aguiar and Ardila. Our formula for the antipode is cancellation-free and multiplicity-free, and is supported only on terms that are compatible with the local geometry of the polyhedron. Our result is part of a larger program to understand orderings on ground sets of simplicial complexes (for instance, on shifted and matroid independence complexes). In this vein, we show that shifted simplicial complexes and broken circuit complexes generate Hopf monoids that are expected to exhibit similar behavior.

Schubert polynomial analogues for degenerate involutions
Published in Advances in Algebra. SRAC 2017. Springer Proceedings in Mathematics & Statistics, vol 277, 2019, pp 183-199 • View PublicationBIB
We survey the recent study of involution Schubert polynomials and a modest generalization that we call degenerate involution Schubert polynomials. We cite several conditions when (degenerate) involution Schubert polynomials have simple factorization formulae. Such polynomials can be computed by traversing through chains in certain weak order posets, and we provide explicit descriptions of such chains in weak order for involutions and degenerate involutions. As an application, we give several examples of how certain multiplicity-free sums of Schubert polynomials factor completely into very simple linear factors.

A Fast Fourier Transform for the Johnson graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
The set $X$ of $k$-subsets of an $n$-set has a natural graph structure where two $k$-subsets are connected if and only if the size of their intersection is $k-1$. This is known as the Johnson graph. The symmetric group $S_n$ acts on the space of complex functions on $X$ and this space has a multiplicity-free decomposition as sum of irreducible representations of $S_n$, so it has a well-defined Gelfand-Tsetlin basis up to scalars. The Fourier transform on the Johnson graph is defined as the change of basis matrix from the delta function basis to the Gelfand-Tsetlin basis. The direct application of this matrix to a generic vector requires $\binom{n}{k}^2$ arithmetic operations. We show that this matrix can be factorized as a product of $n-1$ orthogonal matrices, each one with at most two nonzero elements in each column. The factorization is based on the construction of $n-1$ intermediate bases which are parametrized via the Robinson-Schensted insertion algorithm. This factorization shows that the number of arithmetic operations required to apply this matrix to a generic vector is bounded above by $2(n-1) \binom{n}{k}$. We show that each one of these sparse matrices can be constructed using $O(\binom{n}{k})$ arithmetic operations. Our construction does not depend on numerical methods. Instead, they are obtained by solving small linear systems with integer coefficients derived from the Jucys-Murphy operators. Then both the construction and the succesive application of all these $n-1$ matrices can be performed using $O(n \binom{n}{k})$ operations. As a consequence, we show that the problem of computing all the weights of the isotypic components of a given function can be solved in $O(n \binom{n}{k})$ operations, improving the previous bound $O(k^2 \binom{n}{k})$ when $k$ asymptotically dominates $\sqrt{n}$.

A Pieri rule for Demazure characters of the general linear group
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Pieri rule is a nonnegative, multiplicity-free formula for the Schur function expansion of the product of an arbitrary Schur function with a single row Schur function. Key polynomials are characters of Demazure modules for the general linear group that generalize the Schur function basis of symmetric functions to a basis of the full polynomial ring. We prove a nonsymmetric generalization of the Pieri rule by giving a cancellation-free, multiplicity-free formula for the key polynomial expansion of the product of an arbitrary key polynomial with a single part key polynomial. Our proof is combinatorial, generalizing the Robinson--Schensted--Knuth insertion algorithm on tableaux to an insertion algorithm on Kohnert diagrams.

A classification of spherical Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $L$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_N$ which acts by left multiplication on a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. We say that $X(w)$ is a spherical Schubert variety if $X(w)$ is a spherical variety for the action of $L$. In earlier work we provide a combinatorial description of the decomposition of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ into irreducible $L$-modules for the induced action of $L$. In this work we classify those decompositions into irreducible $L$-modules that are multiplicity-free. This is then applied towards giving a complete classification of the spherical Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian.

We deduce decompositions of natural representations of general linear groups and symmetric groups from combinatorial bijections involving tableaux. These include some of Howe's dualities, Gelfand models, the Schur-Weyl decomposition of tensor space, and multiplicity-free decompositions indexed by threshold partitions.
Involutions and the Gelfand character
Published • View PublicationBIB
The Gelfand representation of $\mathcal{S}_n$ is the multiplicity-free direct sum of the irreducible representations of $\mathcal{S}_n$. In this paper, we use a result of Adin, Postnikov, and Roichman to find a recursive generating function for the Gelfand character. In order to find this generating function, we investigate descents of so-called $λ$-unimodal involutions.

Variations on the $S_n$-module $Lie_n$
We define, for each subset $S$ of primes, an $S_n$-module $Lie_n^S$ with interesting properties. When $S=\emptyset,$ this is the well-known representation $Lie_n$ of $S_n$ afforded by the free Lie algebra. The most intriguing case is $S=\{2\},$ giving a decomposition of the regular representation as a sum of {exterior} powers of modules $Lie_n^{(2)}.$ This is in contrast to the theorems of Poincaré-Birkhoff-Witt and Thrall which decompose the regular representation into a sum of symmetrised $Lie$ modules. We show that nearly every known property of $Lie_n$ has a counterpart for the module $Lie_n^{(2)},$ suggesting connections to the cohomology of configuration spaces via the character formulas of Sundaram and Welker, to the Eulerian idempotents of Gerstenhaber and Schack, and to the Hodge decomposition of the complex of injective words arising from Hochschild homology, due to Hanlon and Hersh. For arbitrary $S,$ the symmetric and exterior powers of the module $Lie_n^S$ allow us to deduce Schur positivity for a new class of multiplicity-free sums of power sums.

The Weyl-Kac weight formula
Published in Seminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire 78B (2017), Article #77 • Search Publication
We provide the first formulae for the weights of all simple highest weight modules over Kac-Moody algebras. For generic highest weights, we present a formula for the weights of simple modules similar to the Weyl-Kac character formula. For the remaining highest weights, the formula fails in a striking way, suggesting the existence of 'multiplicity-free' Macdonald identities for affine root systems.

Complexity of the Fourier transform on the Johnson graph
We show that --in analogy with the classical Fast Fourier Transform on the discrete circle-- this matrix can be factorized as a product of $n-1$ orthogonal matrices, each one with at most two nonzero elements in each column. This factorization shows that the number of arithmetic operations required to apply this matrix to a generic vector is bounded above by $2(n-1) \binom{n}{k}$. As a consequence, we show that the problem of computing all the weights of the irreducible components of a given function can be solved in $O(n \binom{n}{k})$ operations, improving the previous bound $O(k^2 \binom{n}{k})$ when $k$ asymptotically dominates $\sqrt{n}$ in a non-uniform model of computation. The same improvement is achieved for the problem of computing the isotypic projection onto a single component. The proof is based on the construction of $n-1$ intermediate bases, each one parametrized by certain pairs composed by a standard Young tableau and a word. The parametrization of each basis is obtained via the Robinson-Schensted insertion algorithm.
