On Blow-Ups and Injectivity of Quivers
Published in Electron. J. Combin. 20(2) #P40 (2013) • View Publication • BIB
This work connects the idea of a "blow-up" of a quiver with that of injectivity, showing that for a class of monic maps $Φ$, a quiver is $Φ$-injective if and only if all blow-ups of it are as well. This relationship is then used to characterize all quivers that are injective with respect to the natural embedding of $P_{n}$ into $C_{n}$.

Simple, Fast and Deterministic Gossip and Rumor Spreading
Published • View Publication • BIB
We study gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem which asks each node to deliver a rumor to all nodes in an unknown network. Gossip algorithms allow nodes only to call one neighbor per round and have recently attracted attention as message efficient, simple and robust solutions to the rumor spreading problem. Recently, non-uniform random gossip schemes were devised to allow efficient rumor spreading in networks with bottlenecks. In particular, [Censor-Hillel et al., STOC'12] gave an O(log^3 n) algorithm to solve the 1-local broadcast problem in which each node wants to exchange rumors locally with its 1-neighborhood. By repeatedly applying this protocol one can solve the global rumor spreading quickly for all networks with small diameter, independently of the conductance. This and all prior gossip algorithms for the rumor spreading problem have been inherently randomized in their design and analysis. This resulted in a parallel research direction trying to reduce and determine the amount of randomness needed for efficient rumor spreading. This has been done via lower bounds for restricted models and by designing gossip algorithms with a reduced need for randomness. The general intuition and consensus of these results has been that randomization plays a important role in effectively spreading rumors. In this paper we improves over this state of the art in several ways by presenting a deterministic gossip algorithm that solves the the k-local broadcast problem in 2(k+log n)log n rounds. Besides being the first efficient deterministic solution to the rumor spreading problem this algorithm is interesting in many aspects: It is simpler, more natural, more robust and faster than its randomized pendant and guarantees success with certainty instead of with high probability. Its analysis is furthermore simple, self-contained and fundamentally different from prior works.

Trinets encode tree-child and level-2 phylogenetic networks
Published • View Publication • BIB
Phylogenetic networks generalize evolutionary trees, and are commonly used to represent evolutionary histories of species that undergo reticulate evolutionary processes such as hybridization, recombination and lateral gene transfer. Recently, there has been great interest in trying to develop methods to construct rooted phylogenetic networks from triplets, that is rooted trees on three species. However, although triplets determine or encode rooted phylogenetic trees, they do not in general encode rooted phylogenetic networks, which is a potential issue for any such method. Motivated by this fact, Huber and Moulton recently introduced trinets as a natural extension of rooted triplets to networks. In particular, they showed that level-1 phylogenetic networks are encoded by their trinets, and also conjectured that all "recoverable" rooted phylogenetic networks are encoded by their trinets. Here we prove that recoverable binary level-2 networks and binary tree-child networks are also encoded by their trinets. To do this we prove two decomposition theorems based on trinets which hold for all recoverable binary rooted phylogenetic networks. Our results provide some additional evidence in support of the conjecture that trinets encode all recoverable rooted phylogenetic networks, and could also lead to new approaches to construct phylogenetic networks from trinets.

An Algorithmic Approach to the Extensibility of Association Schemes
An association scheme which is associated to a height t presuperscheme is said to be extensible to height t. Smith (1994, 2007) showed that an association scheme X=(Q,Γ) of order d:=|Q| is Schurian iff X is extensible to height (d-2). In this work, we formalize the maximal height t_max(X) of an association scheme X as the largest positive integer such that X is extensible to height t (we also include the possibility t_max(X)=\infty, which is equivalent to t_max(X)\ge (d-2)). Intuitively, the maximal height provides a natural measure of how close an association scheme is to being Schurian. For the purpose of computing the maximal height, we introduce the association scheme extension algorithm. On input an association scheme X=(Q,Γ) of order d:=|Q| and an integer t such that 1\le t\le (d-2), the association scheme extension algorithm decides in time d^(O(t)) if the scheme X is extensible to height t. In particular, if t is a fixed constant, then the running time of the association scheme extension algorithm is polynomial in the order of X. The association scheme extension algorithm is used to show that all non-Schurian association schemes up to order 26 are completely inextensible, i.e. they are not extensible to a positive height. Via the tensor product of association schemes, the latter result gives rise to a multitude of examples of infinite families of completely inextensible association schemes.
Genetic Theory for Cubic Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
We propose a partitioning of the set of unlabelled, connected cubic graphs into two disjoint subsets named genes and descendants, where the cardinality of the descendants is much larger than that of the genes. The key distinction between the two subsets is the presence of special edge cut sets, called crackers, in the descendants. We show that every descendant can be created by starting from a finite set of genes, and introducing the required crackers by special breeding operations. We prove that it is always possible to identify genes that can be used to generate any given descendant, and provide inverse operations that enable their reconstruction. A number of interesting properties of genes may be inherited by the descendant, and we therefore propose a natural algorithm that decomposes a descendant into its ancestor genes. We conjecture that each descendant can only be generated by starting with a unique set of ancestor genes. The latter is supported by numerical experiments.

A quasi-stability result for dictatorships in $S_{n}$
Published • View Publication • BIB
We prove that Boolean functions on $S_{n}$ whose Fourier transform is highly concentrated on the first two irreducible representations of $S_n$, are close to being unions of cosets of point-stabilizers. We use this to give a natural proof of a stability result on intersecting families of permutations, originally conjectured by Cameron and Ku, and first proved by the first author. We also use it to prove a `quasi-stability' result for an edge-isoperimetric inequality in the transposition graph on $S_n$, namely that subsets of $S_n$ with small edge-boundary in the transposition graph are close to being unions of cosets of point-stabilizers.

Schubert problems with respect to osculating flags of stable rational curves
Published • View Publication • BIB
Given a point z in P^1, let F(z) be the osculating flag to the rational normal curve at point z. The study of Schubert problems with respect to such flags F(z_1), F(z_2), ..., F(z_r) has been studied both classically and recently, especially when the points z_i are real. Since the rational normal curve has an action of PGL_2, it is natural to consider the points (z_1, ..., z_r) as living in the moduli space of r distinct point in P^1 -- the famous M_{0,r}. One can then ask to extend the results on Schubert intersections to the compactification \bar{M}_{0,r}. The first part of this paper achieves this goal. We construct a flat, Cohen-Macaulay family over \bar{M}_{0,r}, whose fibers over M_{0,r} are isomorphic to G(d,n) and, given partitions lambda_1, ..., lambda_r, we construct a flat Cohen-Macualay family over \bar{M}_{0,r} whose fiber over (z_1, ..., z_r) in M_{0,r} is the intersection of the Schubert varieties indexed by lambda_i with respect to the osculating flags F(z_i). In the second part of the paper, we investigate the topology of the real points of our family, in the case that sum |lambda_i| = dim G(d,n). We show that our family is a finite covering space of \bar{M}_{0,r}, and give an explicit CW decomposition of this cover whose faces are indexed by objects from the theory of Young tableaux.
A Cheeger-Type Inequality on Simplicial Complexes
Published • View Publication • BIB
In this paper, we consider a variation on Cheeger numbers related to the coboundary expanders recently defined by Dotterer and Kahle. A Cheeger-type inequality is proved, which is similar to a result on graphs due to Fan Chung. This inequality is then used to study the relationship between coboundary expanders on simplicial complexes and their corresponding eigenvalues, complementing and extending results found by Gundert and Wagner. In particular, we find these coboundary expanders do not satisfy natural Buser or Cheeger inequalities.

Exact Bounds for Some Hypergraph Saturation Problems
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let W_n(p,q) denote the minimum number of edges in an n x n bipartite graph G on vertex sets X,Y that satisfies the following condition; one can add the edges between X and Y that do not belong to G one after the other so that whenever a new edge is added, a new copy of K_{p,q} is created. The problem of bounding W_n(p,q), and its natural hypergraph generalization, was introduced by Balogh, Bollobás, Morris and Riordan. Their main result, specialized to graphs, used algebraic methods to determine W_n(1,q). Our main results in this paper give exact bounds for W_n(p,q), its hypergraph analogue, as well as for a new variant of Bollobás's Two Families theorem. In particular, we completely determine W_n(p,q), showing that if 1 <= p <= q <= n then W_n(p,q) = n^2 - (n-p+1)^2 + (q-p)^2. Our proof applies a reduction to a multi-partite version of the Two Families theorem obtained by Alon. While the reduction is combinatorial, the main idea behind it is algebraic.

Homology of Littlewood complexes
Published in Selecta Math. (N.S.) 19 (2013), no. 3, 655-698 • View Publication • BIB
Let V be a symplectic vector space of dimension 2n. Given a partition λwith at most n parts, there is an associated irreducible representation S_{[λ]}(V) of Sp(V). This representation admits a resolution by a natural complex L^λ, which we call the Littlewood complex, whose terms are restrictions of representations of GL(V). When λhas more than n parts, the representation S_{[λ]}(V) is not defined, but the Littlewood complex L^λstill makes sense. The purpose of this paper is to compute its homology. We find that either L^λis acyclic or that it has a unique non-zero homology group, which forms an irreducible representation of Sp(V). The non-zero homology group, if it exists, can be computed by a rule reminiscent of that occurring in the Borel-Weil-Bott theorem. This result can be interpreted as the computation of the "derived specialization" of irreducible representations of Sp(\infty), and as such categorifies earlier results of Koike-Terada on universal character rings. We prove analogous results for orthogonal and general linear groups. Along the way, we will see two topics from commutative algebra: the minimal free resolutions of determinantal ideals and Koszul homology.
Product Dimension of Forests and Bounded Treewidth Graphs
Published • View Publication • BIB
The product dimension of a graph G is defined as the minimum natural number l such that G is an induced subgraph of a direct product of l complete graphs. In this paper we study the product dimension of forests, bounded treewidth graphs and k-degenerate graphs. We show that every forest on n vertices has a product dimension at most 1.441logn+3. This improves the best known upper bound of 3logn for the same due to Poljak and Pultr. The technique used in arriving at the above bound is extended and combined with a result on existence of orthogonal Latin squares to show that every graph on n vertices with a treewidth at most t has a product dimension at most (t+2)(logn+1). We also show that every k-degenerate graph on n vertices has a product dimension at most \ceil{8.317klogn}+1. This improves the upper bound of 32klogn for the same by Eaton and Rodl.

On supersolvable reflection arrangements
Published • View Publication • BIB
Let A = (A,V) be a complex hyperplane arrangement and let L(A) denote its intersection lattice. The arrangement A is called supersolvable, provided its lattice L(A) is supersolvable, a notion due to Stanley. Jambu and Terao showed that every supersolvable arrangement is inductively free, a notion due to Terao. So this is a natural subclass of this particular class of free arrangements. Suppose that W is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on the complex vector space V. Let A = (A(W), V) be the associated hyperplane arrangement of W. In a recent paper, we determined all inductively free reflection arrangements. The aim of this note is to classify all supersolvable reflection arrangements. Moreover, we characterize the irreducible arrangements in this class by the presence of modular elements of rank 2 in their intersection lattice.
A natural stochastic extension of the sandpile model on a graph
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new model of a stochastic sandpile on a graph $G$ containing a sink. When unstable, a site sends one grain to each of its neighbours independently with probability $p \in (0,1]$. For $p=1$, this coincides with the standard Abelian sandpile model. In general, for $p\in(0,1)$, the set of recurrent configurations of this sandpile model is different from that of the Abelian sandpile model. We give a characterisation of this set in terms of orientations of the graph $G$. We also define the lacking polynomial $L_G$ as the generating function counting this set according to the number of grains, and show that this polynomial satisfies a recurrence which resembles that of the Tutte polynomial.

Enumeration of Cylindric Plane Partitions - Part II
Published • View Publication • BIB
Cylindric plane partitions may be thought of as a natural generalization of reverse plane partitions. A generating series for the enumeration of cylindric plane partitions was recently given by Borodin. As in the reverse plane partition case, the right hand side of this identity admits a simple factorization form in terms of the "hook lengths" of the individual boxes in the underlying shape. The main result of this paper is a new bijective proof of Borodin's identity which makes use of Fomin's growth diagram framework for generalized RSK correspondences.

On natural maps from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians
Published in Contemporary Mathematics, volume 592, 2013, 199--214 • View Publication • BIB
Caldero and Zelevinsky studied the geometry of quiver Grassmannians for the Kronecker quiver and computed their Euler characteristics by examining natural stratification of quiver Grassmannians. We consider generalized Kronecker quivers and compute virtual Poincare polynomials of certain varieties which are the images under projections from strata of quiver Grassmannians to ordinary Grassmannians. In contrast to the Kronecker quiver case, these polynomials do not necessarily have positive coefficients. The key ingredient is the explicit formula for noncommutative cluster variables given by Ralf Schiffler and the first author.

A dynamic data structure for counting subgraphs in sparse graphs
We present a dynamic data structure representing a graph G, which allows addition and removal of edges from G and can determine the number of appearances of a graph of a bounded size as an induced subgraph of G. The queries are answered in constant time. When the data structure is used to represent graphs from a class with bounded expansion (which includes planar graphs and more generally all proper classes closed on topological minors, as well as many other natural classes of graphs with bounded average degree), the amortized time complexity of updates is polylogarithmic.

$p^\ell$-Torsion Points In Finite Abelian Groups And Combinatorial Identities
Published • View Publication • BIB
The main aim of this article is to compute all the moments of the number of $p^\ell$-torsion elements in some type of nite abelian groups. The averages involved in these moments are those de ned for the Cohen-Lenstra heuristics for class groups and their adaptation for Tate-Shafarevich groups. In particular, we prove that the heuristic model for Tate-Shafarevich groups is compatible with the recent conjecture of Poonen and Rains about the moments of the orders of $p$-Selmer groups of elliptic curves. For our purpose, we are led to de ne certain polynomials indexed by integer partitions and to study them in a combinatorial way. Moreover, from our probabilistic model, we derive combinatorial identities, some of which appearing to be new, the others being related to the theory of symmetric functions. In some sense, our method therefore gives for these identities a somehow natural algebraic context.

Mixed Schur-Weyl-Sergeev duality for queer Lie superalgebras
Published • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a new family of superalgebras $\overrightarrow{B}_{r,s}$ for $r, s \ge 0$ such that $r+s>0$, which we call the walled Brauer superalgebras, and prove the mixed Scur-Weyl-Sergeev duality for queer Lie superalgebras. More precisely, let $\mathfrak{q}(n)$ be the queer Lie superalgebra, ${\mathbf V} =\mathbb{C}^{n|n}$ the natural representation of $\mathfrak{q}(n)$ and ${\mathbf W}$ the dual of ${\mathbf V}$. We prove that, if $n \ge r+s$, the superalgebra $\overrightarrow{B}_{r,s}$ is isomorphic to the supercentralizer algebra $_{\mathfrak{q}(n)}({\mathbf V}^{\otimes r} \otimes {\mathbf W}^{\otimes s})^{\op}$ of the $\mathfrak{q}(n)$-action on the mixed tensor space ${\mathbf V}^{\otimes r} \otimes {\mathbf W}^{\otimes s}$. As an ingredient for the proof of our main result, we construct a new diagrammatic realization $\overrightarrow{D}_{k}$ of the Sergeev superalgebra $Ser_{k}$. Finally, we give a presentation of $\overrightarrow{B}_{r,s}$ in terms of generators and relations.

On subsets of $S^n$ whose $(n+1)$-point subsets are contained in open hemisheres
We investigate the nature of subsets of spheres which satisfy a tameness condition associated with the Bieri-Groves conjecture on cohomological finiteness conditions for metabelian groups. We find that there is a natural polyhedrality in a crucial special case. In the case of the two dimensional sphere we establish a strong polyhedrality condition for certain open sets which are maximal subject to satisfying the tameness condition that subsets of three or fewer points are contained in open hemispheres. Many examples are included.

Frobenius map for the centers of Hecke algebras
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 367 (2015), 5507--5520 • View Publication • BIB
We introduce a commutative associative graded algebra structure on the direct sum Z of the centers of the Hecke algebras associated to the symmetric groups in n letters for all n. As a natural deformation of the classical construction of Frobenius, we establish an algebra isomorphism from the algebra Z to the ring of symmetric functions. This isomorphism provides an identification between several distinguished bases for the centers (introduced by Geck-Rouquier, Jones, Lascoux) and explicit bases of symmetric functions.
