The Whitney Duals of a Graded Poset
We introduce the notion of a \emph{Whitney dual} of a graded poset. Two posets are Whitney duals to each other if (the absolute value of) their Whitney numbers of the first and second kind are interchanged between the two posets. We define new types of edge and chain-edge labelings which we call \emph{Whitney labelings}. We prove that every graded poset with a Whitney labeling has a Whitney dual. Moreover, we show how to explicitly construct a Whitney dual using a technique involving quotient posets.
As applications of our main theorem, we show that geometric lattices, the lattice of noncrossing partitions, the poset of weighted partitions studied by González D'León-Wachs, and most of the R$^*$S-labelable posets studied by Simion-Stanley all have Whitney duals. Our technique gives a combinatorial description of a Whitney dual of the noncrossing partition lattice in terms of a family of noncrossing Dyck paths. Our method also provides an explanation of the Whitney duality between the poset of weighted partitions and a poset of rooted forests studied by Reiner and Sagan. An integral part of this explanation is a new chain-edge labeling for the poset of weighted partitions which we show is a Whitney labeling.
Finally, we show that a graded poset with a Whitney labeling admits a local action of the $0$-Hecke algebra of type $A$ on its set of maximal chains. The characteristic of the associated representation is Ehrenborg's flag quasisymmetric function. The existence of this action implies, using a result of McNamara, that when the maximal intervals of the constructed Whitney duals are bowtie-free, they are also snellable. In the case where these maximal intervals are lattices, they are supersolvable.

We investigate the poset structure on the alternating group that arises when the latter is generated by 3-cycles. We study intervals in this poset and give several enumerative results, as well as a complete description of the orbits of the Hurwitz action on maximal chains. Our motivating example is the well-studied absolute order arising when the symmetric group is generated by transpositions, i.e. 2-cycles, and we compare our results to this case along the way. In particular, noncrossing partitions arise naturally in both settings.

In Artin-Tits groups attached to Coxeter groups of spherical type, we give a combinatorial formula to express the simple elements of the dual braid monoids in the classical Artin generators. Every simple dual braid is obtained by lifting an $S$-reduced expression of its image in the Coxeter group, in a way which involves Reading's $c$-sortable elements. It has as an immediate consequence that simple dual braids are Mikado braids (the known proofs of this result either require topological realizations of the Artin groups or categorification techniques), and hence that their images in the Iwahori-Hecke algebras have positivity properties. In the classical types, this requires to give an explicit description of the inverse of Reading's bijection from $c$-sortable elements to noncrossing partitions of a Coxeter element $c$, which might be of independent interest. The bijections are described in terms of the noncrossing partition models in these types. While the proof of the formula is case-by-case, it is entirely combinatorial and we develop an approach which reduces a uniform proof to uniformly proving a lemma about inversion sets of $c$-sortable elements.

We introduce two order relations on finite Coxeter groups which refine the absolute and the Bruhat order, and establish some of their main properties. In particular we study the restriction of these orders to noncrossing partitions and show that the intervals for these orders can be enumerated in terms of the cluster complex. The properties of our orders permit to revisit several results in Coxeter combinatorics, such as the Chapoton triangles and how they are related, the enumeration of reflections with full support, the bijections between clusters and noncrossing partitions.
Exceptional and modern intervals of the Tamari lattice
In this article we use the theory of interval-posets recently introduced by Ch{â}tel and Pons in order to describe some interesting families of intervals in the Tamari lattices. These families are defined as interval-posets avoiding specific configurations. At first, we consider what we call exceptional interval-posets and show that they correspond to the intervals which are obtained as images of noncrossing trees in the Dendriform operad. We also show that the exceptional intervals are exactly the intervals of the Tamari lattice induced by intervals in the poset of noncrossing partitions. In the second part we introduce the notion of modern and infinitely modern interval-posets. We show that the modern intervals are in bijection with the new intervals of the Tamari lattice in the sense of Chapoton. We deduce an intrinsic characterization of the new intervals in the Tamari lattice. Finally, we consider the family of what we call infinitely modern intervals and we we prove that there are as many infinitely modern interval-posets of size n as there are ternary trees with n inner vertices.

We present nine bijections between classes of Dyck paths and classes of standard Young tableaux (SYT). In particular, we consider SYT of flag and rectangular shapes, we give Dyck path descriptions for certain SYT of height at most 3, and we introduce a special class of labeled Dyck paths of semilength $n$ that is shown to be in bijection with the set of all SYT with $n$ boxes. In addition, we present bijections from certain classes of Motzkin paths to SYT. As a natural framework for some of our bijections, we introduce a class of set partitions which in some sense is dual to the known class of noncrossing partitions.

There are two natural simplicial complexes associated to the noncrossing partition lattice: the order complex of the full lattice and the order complex of the lattice with its bounding elements removed. The latter is a complex that we call the noncrossing partition link because it is the link of an edge in the former. The first author and his coauthors conjectured that various collections of simplices of the noncrossing partition link (determined by the undesired parking spaces in the corresponding parking functions) form contractible subcomplexes. In this article we prove their conjecture by combining the fact that the star of a simplex in a flag complex is contractible with the second author's theory of noncrossing hypertrees.
Noncrossing hypertrees
Hypertrees and noncrossing trees are well-established objects in the combinatorics literature, but the hybrid notion of a noncrossing hypertree has received less attention. In this article I investigate the poset of noncrossing hypertrees as an induced subposet of the hypertree poset. Its dual is the face poset of a simplicial complex, one that can be identified with a generalized cluster complex of type $A$. The first main result is that this noncrossing hypertree complex is homeomorphic to a piecewise spherical complex associated with the noncrossing partition lattice and thus it has a natural metric. The fact that the order complex of the noncrossing partition lattice with its bounding elements removed is homeomorphic to a generalized cluster complex was not previously known or conjectured.
The metric noncrossing hypertree complex is a union of unit spheres with a number of remarkable properties: 1) the metric subspheres and simplices in each dimension are both bijectively labeled by the set of noncrossing hypertrees with a fixed number of hyperedges, 2) the number of spheres containing the simplex labeled by the noncrossing tree $τ$ is the same as the number simplices in the sphere labeled by the noncrossing tree $τ$, and 3) among the maximal spherical subcomplexes one finds every normal fan of a metric realization of the simple associahedron associated to the cluster algebra of type $A$. In particular, the poset of noncrossing hypertrees and its metric simplicial complex provide a new perspective on familiar combinatorial objects and a common context in which to view the known bijections between noncrossing partitions and the vertices/facets of simple/simplicial associahedra.

We prove a conjecture due independently to Yan and Martinez--Savage that asserts inversion sequences with no weakly decreasing subsequence of length $3$ and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions have the same cardinality. Our approach applies both the generating tree technique and the so-called obstinate kernel method developed by Bousquet-Mélou. One application of this equinumerosity is a discovery of an intriguing identity involving numbers of classical and enhanced $3$-noncrossing partitions.

The Δ-convolution of real probability measures, introduced by Bożejko, generalizes both free and boolean convolutions. It is linearized by the Δ-cumulants, and Yoshida gave a combinatorial formula for moments in terms of Δ-cumulants, that implicitly defines the latter. It relies on the definition of an appropriate weight on noncrossing partitions. We give here two different expressions for the Δ-cumulants: the first one is a simple variant of Lagrange inversion formula, and the second one is a combinatorial inversion of Yoshida's formula involving Schröder trees.

For coprime positive integers $a<b$, Armstrong, Rhoades, and Williams (2013) defined a set $NC(a,b)$ of rational noncrossing partitions, a subset of the ordinary noncrossing partitions of $\{1, \ldots, b-1\}$. Bodnar and Rhoades (2015) confirmed their conjecture that $NC(a,b)$ is closed under rotation and proved an instance of the cyclic sieving phenomenon for this rotation action. We give a definition of $NC(a,b)$ which works for all coprime $a$ and $b$ and prove closure under rotation and cyclic sieving in this more general setting. We also generalize noncrossing parking functions to all coprime $a$ and $b$, and provide a character formula for the action of $\mathfrak{S}_a \times \mathbb{Z}_{b-1}$ on $\mathsf{Park}^{NC}(a,b)$.

Consider the noncrossing set partitions of an $n$-element set which either do not contain the block $\{n-1,n\}$, or which do not contain the singleton block $\{n\}$ whenever $1$ and $n-1$ are in the same block. In this article we study the subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice induced by these elements, and show that it is a supersolvable lattice, and therefore lexicographically shellable. We give a combinatorial model for the NBB bases of this lattice and derive an explicit formula for the value of its Möbius function between least and greatest element. This work is motivated by a recent article by M. Bruce, M. Dougherty, M. Hlavacek, R. Kudo, and I. Nicolas, in which they introduce a subposet of the noncrossing partition lattice that is determined by parking functions with certain forbidden entries. In particular, they conjecture that the resulting poset always has a contractible order complex. We prove this conjecture by embedding their poset into ours, and showing that it inherits the lexicographic shellability.
Enumeration of Fuss-Schröder paths
In this paper we enumerate the number of $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$. Y. Park and S. Kim studied small Schröder paths with type $λ$. Generalizing the results to small $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths with type $λ$, we give a combinatorial interpretation for the number of small $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$ by using Chung-Feller style. We also give two sets of sparse noncrossing partitions of $[2(k + 1)n + 1]$ and $[2(k + 1)n + 2]$ which are in bijection with the set of all small and large, respectively, $(k, r)$-Fuss-Schröder paths of type $λ$.

We study asymptotic distributions of large dimensional random matrices of the form $BB^{*}$, where $B$ is a product of $p$ rectangular random matrices, using free probability and combinatorics of colored labeled noncrossing partitions. These matrices are taken from the set of off-diagonal blocks of the family $\mathcal{Y}$ of independent Hermitian random matrices which are asymptotically free, asymptotically free against the family of deterministic diagonal matrices, and whose norms are uniformly bounded almost surely. This class includes unitarily invariant Hermitian random matrices with limit distributions given by compactly supported probability measures $ν$ on the real line. We express the limit moments in terms of colored labeled noncrossing pair partitions, to which we assign weights depending on even free cumulants of $ν$ and on asymptotic dimensions of blocks (Gaussianization). For products of $p$ independent blocks, we show that the limit moments are linear combinations of a new family of polynomials called generalized multivariate Fuss-Narayana polynomials. In turn, the product of two blocks of the same matrix leads to an example with rescaled Raney numbers.

Motivated by recent work on mixtures of classical and free probabilities, we introduce and study the notion of $ε$-noncrossing partitions. It is shown that the set of such partitions forms a lattice, which interpolates as a poset between the poset of partitions and the one of noncrossing partitions. Moreover, $ε$-cumulants are introduced and shown to characterize the notion of $ε$-independence.

Goulden and Jackson first introduced the cut-and-join operator. The cut-and-join is widely used in studying the Hurwitz number and many other topological recursion problems. Mironov, Morosov and Natanzon give a more general construction and call it W-operator W([n]). As a special case, the cut-and-join operator is W([2]). In this paper, we study the structure of W([n]). We prove that W([n]) can be written as the sum of n! terms and each term corresponds uniquely to a permutation in Sn. We also define the degree of each term. We prove that there is a correspondence between the terms of W([n]) with highest degree and the noncrossing partitions.

It is known that the number of minimal factorizations of the long cycle in the symmetric group into a product of $k$ cycles of given lengths has a very simple formula: it is $n^{k-1}$ where $n$ is the rank of the underlying symmetric group and $k$ is the number of factors. In particular, this is $n^{n-2}$ for transposition factorizations. The goal of this work is to prove a multivariate generalization of this result. As a byproduct, we get a multivariate analog of Postnikov's hook length formula for trees, and a refined enumeration of final chains of noncrossing partitions.

We study oscillations in the eigenfunctions for a fractional Schrödinger operator on the real line. An argument in the spirit of Courant's nodal domain theorem applies to an associated local problem in the upper half plane and provides a bound on the number of nodal domains for the extensions of the eigenfunctions. Using the combinatorial properties of noncrossing partitions, we turn the nodal domain bound into an estimate for the number of sign changes in the eigenfunctions. We discuss applications in the periodic setting and the Steklov problem on planar domains.

We introduce bijections between generalized type $A_n$ noncrossing partitions (that is, associated to arbitrary standard Coxeter elements) and fully commutative elements of the same type. The latter index the diagram basis of the classical Temperley-Lieb algebra, while for each choice of standard Coxeter element the corresponding noncrossing partitions also index a basis, given by the images in the Temperley-Lieb algebra of the simple elements of the dual Garside structure (associated to this choice of standard Coxeter element) of the Artin braid group on $n+1$ strands. We then show that our bijections come from triangular base changes between the diagram basis and the various bases indexed by noncrossing partitions, by explicitly describing the orders giving triangularity. These orders were introduced in a joint paper with Williams and provide exotic lattice structures on noncrossing partitions. Several combinatorial objects are introduced along the way, including an involution on the set of noncrossing partitions.

The functional equation defining the free cumulants in free probability is lifted successively to the noncommutative Faà di Bruno algebra, and then to the group of a free operad over Schröder trees. This leads to new combinatorial expressions, which remain valid for operator-valued free probability. Specializations of these expressions give back Speicher's formula in terms of noncrossing partitions, and its interpretation in terms of characters due to Ebrahimi-Fard and Patras.
