The set of Dyck paths of length $2n$ inherits a lattice structure from a bijection with the set of noncrossing partitions with the usual partial order. In this paper, we study the joint distribution of two statistics for Dyck paths: \emph{area} (the area under the path) and \emph{rank} (the rank in the lattice).
While area for Dyck paths has been studied, pairing it with this rank function seems new, and we get an interesting $(q,t)$-refinement of the Catalan numbers. We present two decompositions of the corresponding generating function: one refines an identity of Carlitz and Riordan; the other refines the notion of $γ$-nonnegativity, and is based on a decomposition of the lattice of noncrossing partitions due to Simion and Ullman.
Further, Biane's correspondence and a result of Stump allow us to conclude that the joint distribution of area and rank for Dyck paths equals the joint distribution of length and reflection length for the permutations lying below the $n$-cycle $(12...n)$ in the absolute order on the symmetric group.

For any irreducible real reflection group $W$ with Coxeter number $h$, Armstrong, Reiner, and the author introduced a pair of $W \times \ZZ_h$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $W$-parking spaces} which generalize the type A notion of parking functions and conjectured a relationship between them. In this paper we give a Fuss analog of their constructions.
For a Fuss parameter $k \geq 1$, we define a pair of $W \times \ZZ_{kh}$-modules which deserve to be called {\sf $k$-$W$-parking spaces} and conjecture a relationship between them. We prove the weakest version of our conjectures for each of the infinite families ABCDI of finite reflection groups, together with proofs of stronger versions in special cases. Whenever our weakest conjecture holds for $W$, we have the following corollaries. First, there is a simple formula for the character of either $k$-$W$-parking space. Second, we recover a cyclic sieving result due to Krattenthaler and Müller which gives the cycle structure of a generalized rotation action on $k$-$W$-noncrossing partitions. Finally, when $W$ is crystallographic, the restriction of either $k$-$W$-parking space to $W$ isomorphic to the action of $W$ on the finite torus $Q / (kh+1)Q$, where $Q$ is the root lattice.
The local $h$-vector of the cluster subdivision of a simplex

The cluster complex $Δ(Φ)$ is an abstract simplicial complex, introduced by Fomin and Zelevinsky for a finite root system $Φ$. The positive part of $Δ(Φ)$ naturally defines a simplicial subdivision of the simplex on the vertex set of simple roots of $Φ$. The local $h$-vector of this subdivision, in the sense of Stanley, is computed and the corresponding $γ$-vector is shown to be nonnegative. Combinatorial interpretations to the entries of the local $h$-vector and the corresponding $γ$-vector are provided for the classical root systems, in terms of noncrossing partitions of types $A$ and $B$. An analogous result is given for the barycentric subdivision of a simplex.

We give two combinatorial proofs of Goulden and Jackson's formula for the number of minimal transitive factorizations of a permutation when the permutation has two cycles. We use the recent result of Goulden, Nica, and Oancea on the number of maximal chains of annular noncrossing partitions of type $B$.

In this article we prove that the lattice of noncrossing partitions is EL-shellable when associated with the well-generated complex reflection group of type $G(d,d,n)$, for $d,n\geq 3$, or with the exceptional well-generated complex reflection groups which are no real reflection groups. This result was previously established for the real reflection groups and it can be extended to the well-generated complex reflection group of type $G(d,1,n)$, for $d,n\geq 3$, as well as to three exceptional groups, namely $G_{25},G_{26}$ and $G_{32}$, using a braid group argument. We thus conclude that the lattice of noncrossing partitions of any well-generated complex reflection group is EL-shellable. Using this result and a construction by Armstrong and Thomas, we conclude further that the poset of $m$-divisible noncrossing partitions is EL-shellable for every well-generated complex reflection group. Finally, we derive results on the Möbius function of these posets previously conjectured by Armstrong, Krattenthaler and Tomie.

Introduced by Reading, the shard intersection order of a finite Coxeter group $W$ is a lattice structure on the elements of $W$ that contains the poset of noncrossing partitions $NC(W)$ as a sublattice. Building on work of Bancroft in the case of the symmetric group, we provide combinatorial models for shard intersections of all classical types, and use this understanding to prove the shard intersection order is EL-shellable.
Further, inspired by work of Simion and Ullman on the lattice of noncrossing partitions, we show that the shard intersection order on the symmetric group admits a symmetric boolean decomposition, i.e., a partition into disjoint boolean algebras whose middle ranks coincide with the middle rank of the poset. Our decomposition also yields a new symmetric boolean decomposition of the noncrossing partition lattice.

We present an equivariant bijection between two actions--promotion and rowmotion--on order ideals in certain posets. This bijection simultaneously generalizes a result of R. Stanley concerning promotion on the linear extensions of two disjoint chains and recent work of D. Armstrong, C. Stump, and H. Thomas on root posets and noncrossing partitions. We apply this bijection to several classes of posets, obtaining equivariant bijections to various known objects under rotation. We extend the same idea to give an equivariant bijection between alternating sign matrices under rowmotion and under B. Wieland's gyration. Finally, we define two actions with related orders on alternating sign matrices and totally symmetric self-complementary plane partitions.
Avoiding Colored Partitions of Lengths Two and Three
Pattern avoidance in the symmetric group $S_n$ has provided a number of useful connections between seemingly unrelated problems from stack-sorting to Schubert varieties. Recent work has generalized these results to $S_n\wr C_c$, the objects of which can be viewed as "colored permutations".
Another body of research that has grown from the study of pattern avoidance in permutations is pattern avoidance in $Π_n$, the set of set partitions of $[n]$. Pattern avoidance in set partitions is a generalization of the well-studied notion of noncrossing partitions.
Motivated by recent results in pattern avoidance in $S_n \wr C_c$ we provide a catalog of initial results for pattern avoidance in colored partitions, $Π_n \wr C_c$. We note that colored set partitions are not a completely new concept. \emph{Signed} (2-colored) set partitions appear in the work of Björner and Wachs involving the homology of partition lattices. However, we seek to study these objects in a new enumerative context.

In 2007, D.I. Panyushev defined a remarkable map on the set of nonnesting partitions (antichains in the root poset of a finite Weyl group). In this paper we identify Panyushev's map with the Kreweras complement on the set of noncrossing partitions, and hence construct the first uniform bijection between nonnesting and noncrossing partitions. Unfortunately, the proof that our construction is well-defined is case-by-case, using a computer in the exceptional types. Fortunately, the proof involves new and interesting combinatorics in the classical types. As consequences, we prove several conjectural properties of the Panyushev map, and we prove two cyclic sieving phenomena conjectured by D. Bessis and V. Reiner.

When W is a finite reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. A formula (for which the only known proofs are case-by-case) expresses the number of multichains of a given length in NCP_W as a generalised Fuss-Catalan number, depending on the invariant degrees of W. We describe how to understand some specifications of this formula in a case-free way, using an interpretation of the chains of NCP_W as fibers of a Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), constructed from the geometry of the discriminant hypersurface of W. We study algebraically the map LL, describing the factorisations of its discriminant and its Jacobian. As byproducts, we generalise a formula stated by K. Saito for real reflection groups, and we deduce new enumeration formulas for certain factorisations of a Coxeter element of W.
Hom-configurations and noncrossing partitions
Let Q be a Dynkin quiver. The bounded derived category of the path algebra of Q has an autoequivalence given by the composition of the Auslander-Reiten translate and the square of the shift functor. We study maximal Hom-free sets in the corresponding orbit category C(Q). We prove that these sets are in bijection with periodic combinatorial configurations, as introduced by Riedtmann, certain Hom<=0-configurations, studied by Buan, Reiten and Thomas, and noncrossing partitions of the Coxeter group associated to Q which are not contained in any proper standard parabolic subgroup. Note that Reading has proved that these noncrossing partitions are in bijection with positive clusters in the associated cluster algebra. Finally, we give a definition of mutations of maximal Hom-free sets in C(Q) and prove that the graph of these mutations is connected.
Groupes de réflexion, géométrie du discriminant et partitions non-croisées
Reflection groups, geometry of the discriminant and noncrossing partitions.
When W is a well-generated complex reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a very rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. This structure appears in several algebraic setups (dual braid monoid, cluster algebras...). Many combinatorial properties of NCP_W are proved case-by-case, using the classification of reflection groups. It is the case for Chapoton's formula, expressing the number of multichains of a given length in the lattice NCP_W, in terms of the invariant degrees of W. This thesis work is motivated by the search for a geometric explanation of this formula, which could lead to a uniform understanding of the connections between the combinatorics of NCP_W and the invariant theory of W.
The starting point is to use the Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), based on the geometry of the discriminant of W. In the first chapter, some topological constructions of Bessis are refined, allowing to relate the fibers of LL with block factorisations of a Coxeter element. Then we prove a transitivity property for the Hurwitz action of the braid group B_n on certain factorisations. Chapter 2 is devoted to certain finite polynomial extensions, and to properties about their Jacobians and discriminants. In Chapter 3, these results are applied to the extension defined by the covering LL. We deduce --- with a case-free proof --- formulas for the number of submaximal factorisations of a Coxeter element in W, in terms of the homogeneous degrees of the irreducible components of the discriminant and Jacobian for LL.

We prove a collection of conjectures of D. White \cite{WComm}, as well as some related conjectures of Abuzzahab-Korson-Li-Meyer \cite{AKLM} and of Reiner and White \cite{ReinerComm}, \cite{WComm}, regarding the cyclic sieving phenomenon of Reiner, Stanton, and White \cite{RSWCSP} as it applies to jeu-de-taquin promotion on rectangular tableaux. To do this, we use Kazhdan-Lusztig theory and a characterization of the dual canonical basis of $\mathbb{C}[x_{11}, ..., x_{nn}]$ due to Skandera \cite{SkanNNDCB}. Afterwards, we extend our results to analyzing the fixed points of a dihedral action on rectangular tableaux generated by promotion and evacuation, suggesting a possible sieving phenomenon for dihedral groups. Finally, we give applications of this theory to cyclic sieving phenomena involving reduced words for the long elements of hyperoctohedral groups and noncrossing partitions.

We prove a conjecture of Drake and Kim: the number of $2$-distant noncrossing partitions of $\{1,2,...,n\}$ is equal to the sum of weights of Motzkin paths of length $n$, where the weight of a Motzkin path is a product of certain fractions involving Fibonacci numbers. We provide two proofs of their conjecture: one uses continued fractions and the other is combinatorial.

We provide an explicit formula for the toric $h$-contribution of each cubical shelling component, and a new combinatorial model to prove Clara Chan's result on the non-negativity of these contributions. Our model allows for a variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result on the $g$-polynomial of the cubical lattice, this variant may be shown by simple inclusion-exclusion. We establish an isomorphism between our model and Chan's model and provide a reinterpretation in terms of noncrossing partitions. By discovering another variant of the Gessel-Shapiro result in the work of Denise and Simion, we find evidence that the toric $h$-polynomials of cubes are related to the Morgan-Voyce polynomials via Viennot's combinatorial theory of orthogonal polynomials.
Noncrossing partitions, clusters and the Coxeter plane
When W is a finite Coxeter group of classical type (A, B, or D), noncrossing partitions associated to W and compatibility of almost positive roots in the associated root system are known to be modeled by certain planar diagrams. We show how the classical-type constructions of planar diagrams arise uniformly from projections of small W-orbits to the Coxeter plane. When the construction is applied beyond the classical cases, simple criteria are apparent for noncrossing and for compatibility for W of types H_3 and I_2(m) and less simple criteria can be found for compatibility in types E_6, F_4 and H_4. Our construction also explains why simple combinatorial models are elusive in the larger exceptional types.
Random $k$-noncrossing partitions
In this paper, we introduce polynomial time algorithms that generate random $k$-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, $k$-noncrossing partitions with uniform probability. A $k$-noncrossing partition does not contain any $k$ mutually crossing arcs in its canonical representation and is 2-regular if the latter does not contain arcs of the form $(i,i+1)$. Using a bijection of Chen {\it et al.} \cite{Chen,Reidys:08tan}, we interpret $k$-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, $k$-noncrossing partitions as restricted generalized vacillating tableaux. Furthermore, we interpret the tableaux as sampling paths of a Markov-processes over shapes and derive their transition probabilities.
Random 3-noncrossing partitions
In this paper, we introduce polynomial time algorithms that generate random 3-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, 3-noncrossing partitions with uniform probability. A 3-noncrossing partition does not contain any three mutually crossing arcs in its canonical representation and is 2-regular if the latter does not contain arcs of the form $(i,i+1)$. Using a bijection of Chen {\it et al.} \cite{Chen,Reidys:08tan}, we interpret 3-noncrossing partitions and 2-regular, 3-noncrossing partitions as restricted generalized vacillating tableaux. Furthermore, we interpret the tableaux as sampling paths of Markov-processes over shapes and derive their transition probabilities.

We interpret noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ in terms of noncrossing partitions of type $A$. As an application, we get type-preserving bijections between noncrossing and nonnesting partitions of type $B$, type $C$ and type $D$ which are different from those in the recent work of Fink and Giraldo. We also define Catalan tableaux of type $B$ and type $D$, and find bijections between them and noncrossing partitions of type $B$ and type $D$ respectively.
Noncrossing partitions and the shard intersection order

We define a new lattice structure on the elements of a finite Coxeter group W. This lattice, called the shard intersection order, is weaker than the weak order and has the noncrossing partition lattice NC(W) as a sublattice. The new construction of NC(W) yields a new proof that NC(W) is a lattice. The shard intersection order is graded and its rank generating function is the W-Eulerian polynomial. Many order-theoretic properties of the shard intersection order, like Mobius number, number of maximal chains, etc., are exactly analogous to the corresponding properties of NC(W). There is a natural dimension-preserving bijection between simplices in the order complex of the shard intersection order (i.e. chains in the shard intersection order) and simplices in a certain pulling triangulation of the W-permutohedron. Restricting the bijection to the order complex of NC(W) yields a bijection to simplices in a pulling triangulation of the W-associahedron.
The shard intersection order is defined indirectly via the polyhedral geometry of the reflecting hyperplanes of W. Indeed, most of the results of the paper are proven in the more general setting of simplicial hyperplane arrangements.
