Construction of an algebra corresponding to a statistical model of the square ladder (square lattice with two lines)
Published in Nuclear Physics B, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we define infinite-dimensional algebra and its representation, whose basis is naturally identified with semi-infinite configurations of the square ladder model. We also extrapolate the ideas for the cyclic 3-leg triangular ladder model. All of these propose a way for generalization, which leads to representations of N = 2, ... algebras. Keywords: 2D lattice, square ladder, triangular ladder, conformal algebra, semi-infinite forms, fermions, quadratic algebra, superfrustration, graded Euler characteristic, cohomology, deformation, Jacobi triple product, superalgebras, operator algebras, N = 2, ... algebras.

Cylindric Reverse Plane Partitions and 2D TQFT
Published in Séminaire Lotharingien de Combinatoire - FPSAC 2018, 80B, 30 • Search Publication
The ring of symmetric functions carries the structure of a Hopf algebra. When computing the coproduct of complete symmetric functions $h_λ$ one arrives at weighted sums over reverse plane partitions (RPP) involving binomial coefficients. Employing the action of the extended affine symmetric group at fixed level $n$ we generalise these weighted sums to cylindric RPP and define cylindric complete symmetric functions. The latter are shown to be $h$-positive, that is, their expansions coefficients in the basis of complete symmetric functions are non-negative integers. We state an explicit formula in terms of tensor multiplicities for irreducible representations of the generalised symmetric group. Moreover, we relate the cylindric complete symmetric functions to a 2D topological quantum field theory (TQFT) that is a generalisation of the celebrated $\mathfrak{\widehat{sl}}_n$-Verlinde algebra or Wess-Zumino-Witten fusion ring, which plays a prominent role in the context of vertex operator algebras and algebraic geometry.

A framework for rank identities -- With a view towards operator algebras
Published in J. Operator Theory 89, Issue 2 (Spring 2023), 477--520 • View PublicationBIB
For every square matrix $A$ over a field $\mathbb{K}$, we have the equality $\mathrm{rank}(A) + \mathrm{rank}(I-A) = \mathrm{rank}(I) + \mathrm{rank}(A-A^2)$ where $I$ denotes the identity matrix with the same dimensions as $A$. In this article, we start a program to systematically characterize and generalize such rank identities with a view towards applications to operator algebras. We initiate the study of so-called ranked rings (unital rings with a `rank-system'), the main examples of interest being finite von Neumann algebras, Murray-von Neumann algebras, and von Neumann rank-rings. In our framework, a field $\mathbb{K}$ may be viewed as a ranked ring with a $\mathbb{Z}^+$-valued rank-system consisting of the usual rank functions on $M_n(\mathbb{K})$ (for $n \in \mathbb{N})$ and serves as the motivating example. We show that a finite von Neumann algebra $\mathscr{R}$ with center $\mathscr{C}$ (and the corresponding Murray-von Neumann algebra $\mathscr{R}_{\textrm{aff}}$) may be endowed with a $\mathscr{C}^{+}$-valued rank-system, considering $\mathscr{C}^{+}$ as a commutative monoid with respect to operator addition. We give an algorithm to generate rank identities in ranked $\mathbb{K}$-algebras via the polynomial function calculus, and in ranked complex Banach algebras via the holomorphic function calculus. As an illustrative application, using these abstract rank identities we show that the sum of finitely many idempotents $e_1, \ldots, e_m$ in a finite von Neumann algebra is an idempotent if and only if they are mutually orthogonal, that is, $e_i e_j = δ_{ij} e_i$ for $1 \le i, j \le m$. In contrast, this does not hold in general in the ring of bounded operators on an infinite-dimensional complex Hilbert space.

The method of weighted words revisited
Alladi and Gordon introduced the method of weighted words in 1993 to prove a refinement and generalisation of Schur's partition identity. Together with Andrews, they later used it to refine Capparelli's and Göllnitz' identities too. In this paper, we present a new variant of this method, which can be used to study more complicated partition identities, and apply it to prove refinements and generalisations of three partition identities. The first one, Siladić's theorem (2002), comes from vertex operator algebras. The second one, a conjectural identity of Primc (1999), comes from crystal base theory. The last one is a very general identity about coloured overpartitions which generalises and unifies several generalisations of Schur's theorem due to Alladi-Gordon, Andrews, Corteel-Lovejoy, Lovejoy and the author.

Combinatorial bases of basic modules for $C_{n}\sp{(1)}$
Published • View PublicationBIB
J.~Lepowsky and R.~L.~Wilson initiated the approach to combinatorial Rogers-Ramanujan type identities via vertex operator constructions of standard (i.e. integrable highest weight) representations of affine Kac-Moody Lie algebras. A.~Meurman and M.~Primc developed further this approach for $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb C)\widetilde{}\ $ by using vertex operator algebras and Verma modules. In this paper we use the same method to construct combinatorial bases of basic modules for affine Lie algebras of type $C_{n}\sp{(1)}$ and, as a consequence, we obtain a series of Rogers-Ramanujan type identities. A major new insight is a combinatorial parametrization of leading terms of defining relations for level one standard modules for affine Lie algebra of type $C_{n}\sp{(1)}$.

In this article, we completely determine the isomorphism classes of lattice vertex operator algebras and the vertex operator subalgebras fixed by a lift of the -1-isometry of the lattice. We also provide similar results for certain even lattices associated with doubly-even binary codes.

Quadratic spaces and holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1993, Schellekens obtained a list of possible 71 Lie algebras of holomorphic vertex operator algebras with central charge 24. However, not all cases are known to exist. The aim of this article is to construct new holomorphic vertex operator algebras using the theory of framed vertex operator algebras and to determine the Lie algebra structures of their weight one subspaces. In particular, we study holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras associated to subcodes of the triply even codes $\RM(1,4)^3$ and $\RM(1,4)\oplus \EuD(d_{16}^+)$ of length 48. These vertex operator algebras correspond to the holomorphic simple current extensions of the lattice type vertex operator algebras $(V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+)^{\otimes 3}$ and $V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+\otimes V_{\sqrt{2}D_{16}^+}^+$. We determine such extensions using a quadratic space structure on the set of all irreducible modules $R(W)$ of $W$ when $W= (V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+)^{\otimes 3}$ or $V_{\sqrt{2}E_8}^+\otimes V_{\sqrt{2}D_{16}^+}^+$. As our main results, we construct seven new holomorphic vertex operator algebras of central charge 24 in Schellekens' list and obtain a complete list of all Lie algebra structures associated to the weight one subspaces of holomorphic framed vertex operator algebras of central charge 24.

An $E_8$-approach to the moonshine vertex operator algebra
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we study the moonshine vertex operator algebra starting with the tensor product of three copies of the vertex operator algebra $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and describe it by the quadratic space over $\F_2$ associated to $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$. Using quadratic spaces and orthogonal groups, we show the transitivity of the automorphism group of the moonshine vertex operator algebra on the set of all full vertex operator subalgebras isomorphic to the tensor product of three copies of $V_{\sqrt2E_8}^+$, and determine the stabilizer of such a vertex operator subalgebra. Our approach is a vertex operator algebra analogue of "An $E_8$-approach to the Leech lattice and the Conway group" by Lepowsky and Meurman. Moreover, we find new analogies among the moonshine vertex operator algebra, the Leech lattice and the extended binary Golay code.

A new class of codes over Z_2 x Z_2
We study a new class of codes over Z_2 x Z_2 which we call L-codes. They arise as a natural fifth step in a series of analogies between Kleinian codes, binary codes, lattices and vertex operator algebras. This analogy will be explained in detail. We classify self-dual L-codes up to length 10 and provide tables for these codes and their weight enumerators up to length 4. We also discuss extremal codes for which a nearly complete classification is obtained.

Conformal designs and D.H. Lehmer's conjecture
Published in J. Algebra 374 (2013), 59-65 • View PublicationBIB
In 1947, Lehmer conjectured that the Ramanujan τ-function τ(m) is non-vanishing for all positive integers m, where τ(m) are the Fourier coefficients of the cusp form Δof weight 12. It is known that Lehmer's conjecture can be reformulated in terms of spherical t-design, by the result of Venkov. In this paper, we show that τ(m) = 0 is equivalent to the fact that the homogeneous space of the moonshine vertex operator algebra (V^\natural)_{m+1} is a conformal 12-design. Therefore, Lehmer's conjecture is now reformulated in terms of conformal t-designs.

A Fast Approach to Creative Telescoping
Published in Mathematics in Computer Science 4(2-3), pp. 259-266, 2010 • View PublicationBIB
In this note we reinvestigate the task of computing creative telescoping relations in differential-difference operator algebras. Our approach is based on an ansatz that explicitly includes the denominators of the delta parts. We contribute several ideas of how to make an implementation of this approach reasonably fast and provide such an implementation. A selection of examples shows that it can be superior to existing methods by a large factor.

Formal calculus and umbral calculus
Published in Electronic Journal of Combinatorics, 17(1) (2010) R95 • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we use the viewpoint of the formal calculus underlying vertex operator algebra theory to study certain aspects of the classical umbral calculus and we introduce and study certain operators generalizing the classical umbral shifts. We begin by calculating the exponential generating function of the higher derivatives of a composite function, following a short, elementary proof which naturally arose as a motivating computation related to a certain crucial "associativity" property of an important class of vertex operator algebras. Very similar (somewhat forgotten) proofs had appeared by the 19-th century, of course without any motivation related to vertex operator algebras. Using this formula, we derive certain results, including especially the calculation of certain adjoint operators, of the classical umbral calculus. This is, roughly speaking, a reversal of the logical development of some standard treatments, which have obtained formulas for the higher derivatives of a composite function, most notably Faà di Bruno's formula, as a consequence of umbral calculus. We set our results in the context of some standard material in what seems a natural fashion given our point of view. We also show a connection between the Virasoro algebra and the classical umbral shifts. This leads naturally to a more general class of operators, which we introduce, and which include the classical umbral shifts as a special case. We prove a few basic facts about these operators.

Frame Stabilizers for framed vertex operator algebras associated to lattices having 4-frames
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we study certain Virasoro frames for lattice vertex operator algebras and their $\Z_2$-orbifolds using linear codes over $\Z_4$. We also compute the corresponding frame stabilizer from the view point of binary codes and $\Z_4$-codes. As an application, we determine the frame stabilizers of several Virasoro frames of the vertex operator algebra $V_{E_8}$ and the moonshine vertex operator algebra $V^\natural$.

The Hecke group algebra of a Coxeter group and its representation theory
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let W be a finite Coxeter group. We define its Hecke-group algebra by gluing together appropriately its group algebra and its 0-Hecke algebra. We describe in detail this algebra (dimension, several bases, conjectural presentation, combinatorial construction of simple and indecomposable projective modules, Cartan map) and give several alternative equivalent definitions (as symmetry preserving operator algebra, as poset algebra, as commutant algebra, ...). In type A, the Hecke-group algebra can be described as the algebra generated simultaneously by the elementary transpositions and the elementary sorting operators acting on permutations. It turns out to be closely related to the monoid algebras of respectively nondecreasing functions and nondecreasing parking functions, the representation theory of which we describe as well. This defines three towers of algebras, and we give explicitly the Grothendieck algebras and coalgebras given respectively by their induction products and their restriction coproducts. This yields some new interpretations of the classical bases of quasi-symmetric and noncommutative symmetric functions as well as some new bases.

Conformal Designs based on Vertex Operator Algebras
We introduce the notion of a conformal design based on a vertex operator algebra. This notation is a natural analog of the notion of block designs or spherical designs when the elements of the design are based on self-orthogonal binary codes or integral lattices, respectively. It is shown that the subspaces of fixed degree of an extremal self-dual vertex operator algebra form conformal 11-, 7-, or 3-designs, generalizing similar results of Assmus-Mattson and Venkov for extremal doubly-even codes and extremal even lattices. Other examples are coming from group actions on vertex operator algebras, the case studied first by Matsuo. The classification of conformal 6- and 8-designs is investigated. Again, our results are analogous to similar results for codes and lattices.

A trace on fractal graphs and the Ihara zeta function
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 361 (2009), no. 6, 3041-3070 • View PublicationBIB
Starting with Ihara's work in 1968, there has been a growing interest in the study of zeta functions of finite graphs, by Sunada, Hashimoto, Bass, Stark and Terras, Mizuno and Sato, to name just a few authors. Then, Clair and Mokhtari-Sharghi have studied zeta functions for infinite graphs acted upon by a discrete group of automorphisms. The main formula in all these treatments establishes a connection between the zeta function, originally defined as an infinite product, and the Laplacian of the graph. In this article, we consider a different class of infinite graphs. They are fractal graphs, i.e. they enjoy a self-similarity property. We define a zeta function for these graphs and, using the machinery of operator algebras, we prove a determinant formula, which relates the zeta function with the Laplacian of the graph. We also prove functional equations, and a formula which allows approximation of the zeta function by the zeta functions of finite subgraphs.

Noncommutative Symmetric Systems over Associative Algebras
Published in J. Pure Appl. Algebra, 210 (2007), no. 2, 363--382 • View PublicationBIB
This paper is the first of a sequence papers ([Z4]--[Z7]) on the {\it ${\mathcal N}$CS $(\text{noncommutative symmetric})$ systems} over differential operator algebras in commutative or noncommutative variables ([Z4]); the ${\mathcal N}$CS systems over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebras ([GL],[F]) of labeled rooted trees ([Z6]); as well as their connections and applications to the inversion problem ([BCW],[E4]) and specializations of NCSFs ([Z5],[Z7]). In this paper, inspired by the seminal work [GKLLRT] on NCSFs (noncommutative symmetric functions), we first formulate the notion {\it ${\mathcal N}$CS systems} over associative $\mathbb Q$-algebras. We then prove some results for ${\mathcal N}$CS systems in general; the ${\mathcal N}$CS systems over bialgebras or Hopf algebras; and the universal ${\mathcal N}$CS system formed by the generating functions of certain NCSFs in [GKLLRT]. Finally, we review some of the main results that will be proved in the followed papers [Z4], [Z6] and [Z7] as some supporting examples for the general discussions given in this paper.

NCS Systems over Differential Operator Algebras and the Grossman-Larson Hopf Algebras of Labeled Rooted Trees
Let $K$ be any unital commutative $\bQ$-algebra and $W$ any non-empty subset of $\bN^+$. Let $z=(z_1, ..., z_n)$ be commutative or noncommutative free variables and $t$ a formal central parameter. % Denote uniformly by $\kzz$ and $\kttzz$ the formal power series algebras % of $z$ over $K$ and $K[[t]]$, respectively. Let $\cDazz$ $(α\geq 1)$ be the unital algebra generated by the differential operators of $\kzz$ which increase the degree in $z$ by at least $α-1$ and $ \ataz $ the group of automorphisms $F_t(z)=z-H_t(z)$ of $\kttzz$ with $o(H_t(z))\geq α$ and $H_{t=0}(z)=0$. First, we study a connection of the \cNcs systems $Ω_{F_t}$ $(F_t\in \ataz)$ (\cite{GTS-I}, \cite{GTS-II}) over the differential operators algebra $\cDazz$ and the \cNcs system $Ω_\bT^W$ (\cite{GTS-IV}) over the Grossman-Larson Hopf algebra $\cH_{GL}^W$ (\cite{GL}, \cite{F1}, \cite{F2}) of $W$-labeled rooted trees. We construct a Hopf algebra homomorphism $\mathcal A_{F_t}: \cH_{GL}^W \to \cDazz$ $(F_t\in \ataz)$ such that $\mathcal A_{F_t}^{\times 5}(Ω_\bT^W) =Ω_{F_t}$. Secondly, we generalize the tree expansion formulas for the inverse map (\cite{BCW}, \cite{Wr3}), the D-Log and the formal flow (\cite{WZ}) of $F_t$ in the commutative case to the noncommutative case. Thirdly, we prove the injectivity of the specialization $\cT:{\mathcal N}Sym \to \cH_{GL}^{\bN^+}$ (\cite{GTS-IV}) of NCSF's (noncommutative symmetric functions) (\cite{G-T}). Finally, we show the family of the specializations $\cS_{F_t}$ of NCSF's with all $n\geq 1$ and the polynomial automorphisms $F_t=z-H_t(z)$ with $H_t(z)$ homogeneous and the Jacobian matrix $JH_t$ strictly lower triangular can distinguish any two different NCSF's. The graded dualized versions of the main results above are also discussed.
