Group Permanents of Abelian $p$-Groups and Young Diagrams
We study the number $\Nu(\Per(G_λ))$ of distinct monomials with nonzero coefficients in the group permanent of an abelian $p$-group $G_λ$ associated with a partition $λ$ of a positive integer $N$. First, we derive an explicit formula for $\Nu(\Per(G_λ))$ in terms of the partial column sums of the Young diagram of $λ$. Next, we show that the relative order of the values $\Nu(\Per(G_λ))$ is determined by a lexicographic comparison of the conjugate Young diagrams. Finally, we investigate congruence properties of $\Nu(\Per(G_λ))$ for abelian $p$-groups and establish a criterion involving Wolstenholme primes.
On The Number of Irreducible FAT Colorings
A vertex coloring of a graph $G$ with nonempty color classes $V_1,V_2,\dots,V_k$ is called a \emph{FAT $k$-coloring} if there exist real numbers $α,β\in[0,1]$ such that for every vertex $v$ and every color class $V_i \in \left\{ V_1,V_2,\dots,V_k \right\} $ we have $$ \bigl| N(v) \cap V_i \bigr|= \begin{cases}
α°(v) & \text{if } v\notin V_i,\\[4pt]
β°(v) & \text{if } v\in V_i . \end{cases} $$
\noindent The FAT coloring concept was originally proposed and thoroughly studied by Beers and Mulas. The set of all FAT colorings of a graph is naturally ordered by the coarsening relation, in which finer partitions are larger in the order. The maximal elements of this poset, called \emph{irreducible FAT colorings}, form a generating set: every FAT coloring of the graph can be obtained by merging color classes of some irreducible one. Beers and Mulas raised the compelling question whether, for every positive integer $s$, there exists a graph that admits exactly $s$ irreducible FAT colorings. In this paper we settle this question affirmatively by exhibiting, for any given $s$, a graph possessing precisely $s$ such colorings.
Higher $q$-Continued Fractions and Dimers on Band Graphs
In this paper, we explore the theory of higher dimers on band graphs. First, we provide a combinatorial interpretation for the trace of the $q$-deformed higher continued fraction matrices, by showing that with respect to a $q$-weighting on edges, the trace gives the dimer partition function on the set of good higher dimers, which generalizes the notion of good perfect matchings. We also show that the set of good higher dimer covers form a distributive lattice with respect to face flips on square faces. Finally, we attempt to generalize the symmetry result on circular fence posets to the case of good higher dimers, by showing that the dimer partition on a certain family of band graphs are palindromic, in particular, through an approach fitting in the context of dimer theory.
A Modified Greaves--Jing--Zhu Operator and a Shifted $t$-Gessel Formula
The recent work of Greaves, Jing, and Zhu gives an operator construction for the $t$-Schur functions and the $t$-Schur measure. Motivated by their construction, we consider the same type of vertex operator on the odd power-sum ring. Its Fourier modes generate a family of symmetric functions indexed by strict partitions, which we call shifted $t$-Schur functions. These functions specialize to Schur $Q$-functions at $t=0$. We derive a two-row formula, a Pfaffian Giambelli formula, a Cauchy identity, and a finite shifted Gessel-type formula. This note is intended as a first step toward further study of the odd-operator analogue of the Greaves--Jing--Zhu construction.
Hall-Littlewood functions in noncommuting variables
In 2022 Aliniaeifard, Li, and van Willigenburg defined Schur functions in the algebra of symmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCSym), answering an open question posed by Rosas and Sagan in 2004. These Schur functions are not monomial positive, since they are defined via a noncommutative analogue of the Jacobi-Trudi determinant.
We introduce Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ indexed by set partitions $π$ in noncommuting variables ${\bf x}=({\bf x}_1,{\bf x}_2,\ldots)$, and define Schur functions in noncommuting variables to be ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})={\bf P}_π({\bf x};0)$. We prove that the set of Hall-Littlewood functions $\{{\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)\}$ for all set partitions $π$ of $[n]$ forms a $\mathbb{Q}[t]$-basis of NCSym of homogeneous degree $n$, and that this basis is invariant under any permutation acting on set partitions. These Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym map to classical Hall-Littlewood functions under commutation, up to a scalar factor.
We also show that the Hall-Littlewood functions ${\bf P}_π({\bf x};t)$ naturally refine the lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. Specifically, the Schur functions ${\bf s}_π({\bf x})$ are monomial positive and refine the lifted Schur function introduced by Rosas and Sagan. Moreover, we introduce a star product of two polynomials in NCSym and develop the star-multiplication rule for a lifted and a non-lifted Hall-Littlewood functions in NCSym. This rule is a noncommutative analogue of the product rule for two Hall-Littlewood functions and, in particular, of the Littlewood-Richardson rule. Finally, our approach extends to the algebra of quasisymmetric functions in noncommuting variables (NCQSym) indexed by set compositions.
Determining decomposition thresholds for long odd cycles
An $\ell$-cycle decomposition of a graph $G$ is a set of $\ell$-cycles in $G$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $G$. The $\ell$-cycle decomposition threshold $δ_{C_\ell}$ is then the least real number such that any $n$-vertex graph $G$ with minimum degree at least $(δ_{C_\ell}+o(1))n$ has an $\ell$-cycle decomposition if and only if $\ell$ divides $|E(G)|$ and each vertex of $G$ has even degree. Nash-Williams' famous conjecture on triangle decompositions states, asymptotically, that $δ_{C_3}=\frac{3}{4}$. A very recent breakthrough result of Delcourt and Postle completely resolved this conjecture, however, Glock, Kühn, and Osthus have posed the problem of determining $δ_{C_\ell}$ for larger odd values of $\ell$ (the behaviour of $δ_{C_\ell}$ for even $\ell$ is different and well understood). A natural generalisation of Nash-Williams' conjecture implies that $δ_{C_\ell}=\frac{\ell}{2\ell-2}$ for all odd $\ell \geq 3$. Here we prove that this conjecture holds for all $\ell \geq 73$.
The Twin-Width of Graphs of Bounded VC-Dimension
In this paper, we investigate which hereditary classes of graphs admit sub-linear (in the number of vertices) bounds on twin-width. By modifying conference graphs, we can show that split, bipartite, and co-bipartite graphs can all have linear twin-width. However, excluding an induced subgraph of each of these three types is equivalent to the class of graphs having bounded VC-dimension, as shown by Bousquet, Lagoutte, Li, Parreau and Thomassé. Graphs of bounded VC-dimension can have unbounded twin-width, but whether it can be linear was an open question. In this paper, we first present a tool for obtaining twin-width bounds in general by contracting a graph based on a partition by distinct neighbourhoods. Then, using this tool, we prove that graphs with bounded VC-dimension have twin-width at most sub-linear. We also obtain a separate, tighter upper bound for the class of interval graphs, as well as a lower bound.
Congruences for Overcubic Partition $k$-Tuples
In the last few years, a number of authors have proved divisibility properties satisfied by various functions which count the number of overcubic partition $k$--tuples of weight $n$ for small values of $k$. In this work, we use generating functions to prove some of their results as well as multiple infinite families of new congruences for overcubic partition $k$-tuples which do not yet appear in the literature. In particular, we focus on a new perspective which provides insights as to why these functions are often divisible by powers of 2, and we also prove families of congruences whose moduli are odd. For example, we prove that, for all $m\geq 0$, $\OL{b}_{4}(22m + 11) \equiv 0 \pmod{11}$ and we also prove infinite families such as $\OL{b}_{9l+2}(9m+3) \equiv 0 \pmod{3}$ for all $m,l\geq0$.
Local Complexity, Overlap Control, and Global Simplicity in Partition Graphs: A Conceptual Synthesis for G_n and K_n = Cl(G_n)
For each positive integer $n$, let $G_n$ be the partition graph whose vertices are the partitions of $n$, with adjacency defined by an elementary transfer of one unit between parts, followed by reordering. Let $K_n=\mathrm{Cl}(G_n)$ be its clique complex. Previous work revealed two apparently contrasting features of this family. Locally, the graphs $G_n$ become increasingly rich: local clique dimensions grow, degree landscapes refine, support jumps and simplex layers proliferate, and axial, rear, central, shell, and directional structures become more pronounced. Globally, however, the clique complexes remain homotopically simple: $K_n\simeq \bigvee^{b_n}S^2$, where $b_n=χ(K_n)-1$.
This paper gives a conceptual synthesis explaining why these facts are compatible. The local side is governed by ordered local transfer types, which determine local neighborhood graphs, degrees, local clique numbers, and local simplex dimensions. The global side is governed not by the largest local simplices, but by the overlap pattern of canonical full star/top simplices. These simplices form a good cover $\mathcal C_n$, giving $K_n\simeq N(\mathcal C_n)=N_n$. The nerve admits an anchor-cover and intersection-poset reduction $N_n\simeq Δ(J_n)$, with $\dimΔ(J_n)\le 2$. Thus high-dimensional local simplices occur inside contractible containers, while global topology is controlled by a low-dimensional overlap poset. Within this family, the qualitative topological problem therefore collapses to the numerical computation and interpretation of a single integer, the Euler characteristic $χ(K_n)$, equivalently the bouquet rank $b_n=χ(K_n)-1$.
New Approaches to Identities for Vacillating Tableaux
A fundamental identity for the number of vacillating tableaux was originally obtained through the representation theory of partition algebras. We extend this identity to arbitrary differential posets and show that it, together with several analogous identities, follows directly from the structural properties of differential posets. Specializing to Young's lattice and its Cartesian powers, we further obtain new bijective proofs via a simple deletion--insertion process.
Two-colored generalized Frobenius partitions and minimal-excludant sums over bipartitions
Let $\cpsi_{2,a}(n)$ denote the number of $(2,a)$-colored Frobenius partitions of weight $n$, where the two rows have prescribed length difference. We study the two cases $a=0$ and $a=1$ and connect them with minimal-excludant statistics on bipartitions. Let $σ\mex_2(n)$ be the sum of the Lin--Liu bipartition minimal excludants over all bipartitions of $n$, and let $E_2(n)$ be the number of bipartitions whose two component minimal excludants are equal. For all $n\geq 0$, we give a combinatorial proof of \[ \cpsi_{2,0}(n)=2σ\mex_2(n) \qquad\text{and}\qquad \cpsi_{2,1}(n)=2σ\mex_2(n)-E_2(n). \] These identities give direct combinatorial interpretations of two-colored Frobenius partition functions in terms of bipartition minimal-excludant sums.
Injectivity of symmetric polynomial maps on partitions
Introduced by Ballantine, Beck, and Merca, the elementary symmetric partition function $\mathrm{pre}_k$, defined on the set of partitions with at least $k$ parts, has been a topic of recent interest. We prove that $\mathrm{pre}_k$ is injective on the set of $m$-ary partitions for positive integers $m \ge k$, generalizing the binary $k = 2$ result of Ballantine, Beck, and Merca, and complementing a result of Hadelyn, Niergarth, Li and Li showing that, for each $k \ge 3$, $\mathrm{pre}_k$ is not injective on partitions of $n$ with length $2k$ for infinitely many $n$. We introduce the skew Schur partition function $\mathrm{prs}_{λ'/μ'}$, prove injectivity results for particular choices of $λ',μ'$, and describe an application to representation theory.
Tree-cut decompositions for displaying undominated edge-ends
We prove that every graph admits a linked, componental, rooted tree-cut decomposition of finite adhesion that displays all undominated edge-ends. As a first application, we deduce that this tree-cut decomposition also displays the edge-degrees of all undominated edge-ends. For locally finite graphs $-$ where every end is an undominated edge-end $-$ this yields a linked tree-cut decomposition of finite adhesion into $\textit{finite}$ parts that displays all ends and their edge-degrees. As a second application, this latter tree-cut decomposition yields short, unified deductions of Thomassen's theorem on boundary-linked finite partitions, and of Bruhn and Stein's characterisation of Eulerian locally finite graphs in terms of even ends.
Perfect Sphere Packing In The Boolean Space
Perfect sphere packing in the Boolean space is a fundamental and complex problem with significant implications for coding theory, cryptography, and discrete mathematics. The classical solution to the perfect sphere packing problem was provided by Hamming via his well-known perfect codes. However, a major limitation of the traditional Hamming metric is its strict applicability, as it allows perfect partitioning only for spaces with specific, highly constrained dimensions. To address this structural limitation, this article introduces a novel distance metric specifically designed for Boolean hypercubes. The proposed metric modifies the topological properties of the space, making it mathematically viable to partition a Boolean space of any arbitrary dimension into disjoint, perfect spheres. We rigorously define the algebraic properties of this new distance function and demonstrate its consistency across various dimensions. Furthermore, we explore the structural characteristics of the resulting packings. This approach bypasses the classical dimensional constraints of Hamming codes, potentially opening new avenues for designing error-correcting codes and cryptographic primitives in non-traditional dimensions.
Classical freeness of $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n$ at level $1$ via combinatorics
We use a family of Rogers--Ramanujan-type combinatorial identities of Dousse--Konan involving coloured partitions to prove classical freeness of the simple vertex operator algebras based on $\widehat{\mathfrak{sl}}_n$ at level $1$. These identities are used to produce Gröbner bases for the relevant arc algebras.
Arithmetic Properties Satisfied by a Recent Integer Partition Function of Dombos
In recent work of Dombos, the set of integer partitions of $n$ wherein the parts are either divisible by 4 or congruent to $\pm 1 \pmod{6}$ arose in a natural way. In this work, we will denote the function which counts the number of such partitions of $n$ by $dp(n)$. Using elementary generating function manipulations and classical $q$--series results, we prove several congruences satisfied by $dp(n)$. As an example, we prove that, for all $α\geq 1$ and all $n \geq 0$, \begin{equation*}
dp \left( 3^{2α+ 1}n + \frac{7 \cdot 9^α+ 1}{4} \right) \equiv 0 \pmod{3}. \end{equation*}
Congruences of shifted Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients
The shifted Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $g^λ_{μν}(α)$, first studied by Alexandersson-Féray, are Laurent polynomials in the Jack parameter $α$ attached to triples of partitions, which generalize the classical Jack Littlewood-Richardson coefficients investigated by Stanley, et al. In a previous work of the author's, it was conjectured that the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients for two triples, in which one of the partitions differ by a single box move, are congruent modulo the $α$-hook length of the pivot box for that move. In this note we prove that conjecture. We also investigate the extension of that conjecture to shifted Macdonald functions, which remains open pending two properies of Lassalle's shift map in that case.
Trivariate Splines on Fans of Hyperplane Arrangements and Koszul Homology
We study the space of splines $\mathcal{S}^{\mathbf{r}}(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ where ${\mathbf{r}}$ denotes a smoothness distribution and $Σ^\mathscr{A}$ is the fan of a central hyperplane arrangement $\mathscr{A}$ in $\mathbb{R}^3$. This is the first step in the analysis of splines on three-dimensional cross-cut partitions, which naturally generalize planar cross-cut partitions. We show that the Hilbert function of $\mathcal{S}^{\mathbf{r}}(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ is bounded by an expression that involves the dimensions of specific Koszul homology modules constructed from the defining equations of the hyperplane arrangement $\mathscr{A}$ and the smoothness distribution function. By exploiting this connection with Koszul homology, we are able to: 1) compute the dimension of the spline space in high degrees, 2) compute all values of the dimension of the spline space if $\mathscr{A}$ is generic with five or fewer hyperplanes, and 3) compute the Hilbert function of the spline space if $\mathscr{A}$ is a generic arrangement with sufficiently many hyperplanes and ${\mathbf{r}}$ is a constant distribution. As an application of our methods, we compute $\dim \mathcal{S}^0_d(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ and $\dim \mathcal{S}^1_d(Σ^\mathscr{A})$ for all values of $d$ when $\mathscr{A}$ is a generic arrangement.
Lin--Lu--Yau Ricci Curvature of Digraphs via Optimal Transport Couplings
In this paper, we study the Lin--Lu--Yau Ricci curvature of strongly connected locally finite digraphs through an explicit optimal-coupling construction. For an arc of a digraph, we derive a computable curvature formula by constructing a coupling between the probability measures at its tail and head, and by proving its optimality using a suitable $1$-Lipschitz function. The formula is not only effective for direct computation, but also unifies several known results: in particular, it recovers the Lin--Lu--Yau Ricci curvature formula for Cayley graphs of Right-Angled Artin--Coxeter Hybrid groups as a special case and gives shorter proofs of curvature results arising from matching-type conditions. We then characterize arcs with zero Ricci curvature through perfect distance matching and perfect distance partitions. We further prove that, under suitable assumptions, such arc curvature in directed Cayley graphs increases when an inverse generator or a new generator is added to the generating set. As applications, we compute the curvature of directed Cayley graphs of dihedral groups and generalized quaternion groups, including $Γ(D_n,\{a,b\})$, $Γ(Q_{4m},\{a,b\})$, $Γ(Q_{4m},\{a,a^{-1},b\})$ and $Γ(Q_{4m},\{a,b,b^{-1}\})$. Finally, we provide an algorithm for computing the Lin--Lu--Yau Ricci curvature of Cayley graphs of finitely generated groups with prescribed generating sets, together with complete curvature tables for several important families of finite groups.
Obstructions and kernel transport for Hecke lifts of partition q-brackets
We study lifts of the level-one Hecke action on quasimodular forms through the partition q-bracket. We prove two obstruction theorems: no exact lift on the genuine shifted symmetric algebra $\mathbb{Q}[Q_2,Q_3,\ldots]$ is multiplicative, and no exact lift satisfies a strict $Q_2$-tower condition. We classify fixed-weight exact lifts by kernel actions and kernel-valued Hecke cocycles, construct transported scalar lifts under Hecke stability of the q-bracket image, and derive kernel-transport and spectral-divisibility consequences from the injectivity of Zagier's lowering operator $B=\frac12(D-\partial^2)$ on the genuine homogeneous subspace. Exact rational rank computations show q-bracket surjectivity in weights at most $16$, yielding explicit Hecke lifts and kernel data in those weights.
