Sylvester-Cayley vector partitions algorithm and the Gaussian polynomials
We extend an algorithm suggested in 1858 by Sylvester and implemented in 1860 by Cayley for a problem of double partitions and apply it to derivation of explicit expressions for coefficients of the Gaussian polynomials through convolution of restricted partition functions.
Isometric Hamming embeddings of weighted graphs

A mapping $α: V(G) \to V(H)$ from the vertex set of one graph $G$ to another graph $H$ is an isometric embedding if the shortest path distance between any two vertices in $G$ equals the distance between their images in $H$. Here, we consider isometric embeddings of a weighted graph $G$ into unweighted Hamming graphs, called Hamming embeddings, when $G$ satisfies the property that every edge is a shortest path between its endpoints. Using a Cartesian product decomposition of $G$ called its pseudofactorization, we show that every Hamming embedding of $G$ may be partitioned into Hamming embeddings for each irreducible pseudofactor graph of $G$, which we call its canonical partition. This implies that $G$ permits a Hamming embedding if and only if each of its irreducible pseudofactors is Hamming embeddable. This result extends prior work on unweighted graphs that showed that an unweighted graph permits a Hamming embedding if and only if each irreducible pseudofactor is a complete graph. When a graph $G$ has nontrivial pseudofactors, determining whether $G$ has a Hamming embedding can be simplified to checking embeddability of two or more smaller graphs.

In 2007, Andrews and Paule published the eleventh paper in their series on MacMahon's partition analysis, with a particular focus on broken $k$-diamond partitions. On the way to broken $k$-diamond partitions, Andrews and Paule introduced the idea of $k$-elongated partition diamonds. Recently, Andrews and Paule revisited the topic of $k$-elongated partition diamonds. Using partition analysis and the Omega operator, they proved that the generating function for the partition numbers $d_k(n)$ produced by summing the links of $k$-elongated plane partition diamonds of length $n$ is given by $\frac{(q^2;q^2)_\infty^k}{(q;q)_\infty^{3k+1}}$ for each $k\geq 1.$ A significant portion of their recent paper involves proving several congruence properties satisfied by $d_1, d_2$ and $d_3$, using modular forms as their primary proof tool. In this work, our goal is to extend some of the results proven by Andrews and Paule in their recent paper by proving infinitely many congruence properties satisfied by the functions $d_k$ for an infinite set of values of $k.$ The proof techniques employed are all elementary, relying on generating function manipulations and classical $q$-series results.
Limiting Betti distributions of Hilbert schemes on $n$ points

Hausel and Rodriguez-Villegas recently observed that work of Göttsche, combined with a classical result of Erdős and Lehner on integer partitions, implies that the limiting Betti distribution for the Hilbert schemes $(\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]}$ on $n$ points, as $n\rightarrow +\infty,$ is a \textit{Gumbel distribution}. In view of this example, they ask for further such Betti distributions. We answer this question for the quasihomogeneous Hilbert schemes $((\mathbb{C}^2)^{[n]})^{T_{α,β}}$ that are cut out by torus actions. We prove that their limiting distributions are also of Gumbel type. To obtain this result, we combine work of Buryak, Feigin, and Nakajima on these Hilbert schemes with our generalization of the result of Erdős and Lehner, which gives the distribution of the number of parts in partitions that are multiples of a fixed integer $A\geq 2.$ Furthermore, if $p_k(A;n)$ denotes the number of partitions of $n$ with exactly $k$ parts that are multiples of $A$, then we obtain the asymptotic
$$
p_k(A,n)\sim \frac{24^{\frac k2-\frac14}(n-Ak)^{\frac k2-\frac34}}{\sqrt2\left(1-\frac1A\right)^{\frac k2-\frac14}k!A^{k+\frac12}(2π)^k}e^{2π\sqrt{\frac1{6}\left(1-\frac1A\right)(n-Ak)}},
$$ a result which is of independent interest.

The irreducible representations of symmetric groups can be realized as certain graded pieces of invariant rings, equivalently as global sections of line bundles on partial flag varieties. There are various ways to choose useful bases of such Specht modules $S^λ$. Particularly powerful are web bases, which make important connections with cluster algebras and quantum link invariants. Unfortunately, web bases are only known in very special cases -- essentially, only the cases $λ=(d,d)$ and $λ=(d,d,d)$. Building on work of B. Rhoades (2017), we construct an apparent web basis of invariant polynomials for the $2$-parameter family of Specht modules with $λ$ of the form $(d,d,1^\ell)$. The planar diagrams that appear are noncrossing set partitions, and we thereby obtain geometric interpretations of earlier enumerative results in combinatorial dynamics.

A box-ball system is a discrete dynamical system whose dynamics come from the balls jumping according to certain rules. A permutation on n objects gives a box-ball system state by assigning its one-line notation to n consecutive boxes. After a finite number of steps, a box-ball system will reach a steady state. From any steady state, we can construct a tableau called the soliton decomposition of the box-ball system. We prove that if the soliton decomposition of a permutation w is a standard tableau or if its shape coincides with the Robinson-Schensted (RS) partition of w, then the soliton decomposition of w and the RS insertion tableau of w are equal. We also use row reading words, Knuth moves, RS recording tableaux, and a localized version of Greene's theorem (proven recently by Lewis, Lyu, Pylyavskyy, and Sen) to study various properties of a box-ball system.
New lower bounds for Schur and weak Schur numbers
This article provides new lower bounds for both Schur and weak Schur numbers by exploiting a "template"-based approach. The concept of "template" is also generalized to weak Schur numbers. Finding new templates leads to explicit partitions improving lower bounds as well as the growth rate for Schur numbers, weak Schur numbers, and multicolor Ramsey numbers $R_n(3)$. The new lower bounds include $S(9) \geq 17\,803$, $S(10) \geq 60\,948$, $\mathit{WS}(6) \geq 646$, $\mathit{WS}(9) \geq 22\,536$ and $\mathit{WS}(10) \geq 71\,256$.

Any Schur ring is uniquely determined by a partition of the elements of the group. In this paper we present a general technique for enumerating Schur rings over cyclic groups using traditional Schur rings. We also survey recent efforts to enumerate Schur rings over cyclic groups of specific orders.

Let $P_{d}(n)$ denote the number of $n \times \ldots \times n$ $d$-dimensional partitions with entries from $\left\{0,1,\ldots,n\right\}$. Building upon the works of Balogh-Treglown-Wagner and Noel-Scott-Sudakov, we show that when $d \to \infty$, $$P_{d}(n) = 2^{(1+o_{d}(1)) \sqrt{\frac{6}{(d+1)π}} \cdot n^{d}}$$ holds for all $n \geq 1$. This makes progress towards a conjecture of Moshkovitz-Shapira [{\it{Adv. in Math.}} 262 (2014), 1107--1129]. Via the main result of Moshkovitz and Shapira, our estimate also determines asymptotically a Ramsey theoretic parameter related to Erdős-Szekeres-type functions, thus solving a problem of Fox, Pach, Sudakov, and Suk [{\it{Proc. Lond. Math. Soc.}} 105 (2012), 953--982]. Our main result is a new supersaturation theorem for antichains in $[n]^{d}$, which may be of independent interest.

Following Cayley, MacMahon, and Sylvester, define a non-unitary partition to be an integer partition with no part equal to one, and let $ν(n)$ denote the number of non-unitary partitions of size $n$. In a 2021 paper, the sixth author proved a formula to compute $p(n)$ by enumerating only non-unitary partitions of size $n$, and recorded a number of conjectures regarding the growth of $ν(n)$ as $n\to \infty$. Here we refine and prove some of these conjectures. For example, we prove $p(n) \sim ν(n)\sqrt{n/ζ(2)}$ as $n\to \infty$, and give Ramanujan-like congruences between $p(n)$ and $ν(n)$ such as $p(5n)\equiv ν(5n)\ (\operatorname{mod} 5)$.
Grass trees and forests: Enumeration of Grassmannian trees and forests, with applications to the momentum amplituhedron

The Exponential Formula allows one to enumerate any class of combinatorial objects built by choosing a set of connected components and placing a structure on each connected component which depends only on its size. There are multiple variants of this result, including Speicher's result for noncrossing partitions, as well as analogues of the Exponential Formula for series-reduced planar trees and forests. In this paper we use these formulae to give generating functions contracted Grassmannian trees and forests, certain graphs whose vertices are decorated with a helicity. Along the way we enumerate bipartite planar trees and forests, and we apply our results to enumerate various families of permutations: for example, bipartite planar trees are in bijection with separable permutations. Our generating function for Grassmannian forests can be interpreted as the rank generating function for the boundary strata of the momentum amplituhedron, an object which encodes the tree-level S-matrix of maximally supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. This allows us to verify that the Euler characteristic of the momentum amplituhedron is 1.
Orientation of Fitch Graphs and Detection of Horizontal Gene Transfer in Gene Trees

Horizontal gene transfer events partition a gene tree $T$ and thus, its leaf set into subsets of genes whose evolutionary history is described by speciation and duplication events alone. Indirect phylogenetic methods can be used to infer such partitions $\mathcal{P}$ from sequence similarity or evolutionary distances without any a priory knowledge about the underlying tree $T$. In this contribution, we assume that such a partition $\mathcal{P}$ of a set of genes $X$ is given and that, independently, an estimate $T$ of the original gene tree on $X$ has been derived. We then ask to what extent $T$ and the xenology information, i.e., $\mathcal{P}$ can be combined to determine the horizontal transfer edges in $T$. We show that for each pair of genes $x$ and $y$ with $x,y$ being in different parts of $\mathcal{P}$, it can be decided whether there always exists or never exists a horizontal gene transfer in $T$ along the path connecting $y$ and the most recent common ancestor of $x$ and $y$. This problem is equivalent to determining the presence or absence of the directed edge $(x,y)$ in so-called Fitch graphs; a more fine-grained version of graphs that represent the dependencies between the sets in $\mathcal{P}$. We then consider the generalization to insufficiently resolved gene trees and show that analogous results can be obtained. We show that the classification of $(x,y)$ can be computed in constant time after linear-time preprocessing. Using simulated gene family histories, we observe empirically that the vast majority of horizontal transfer edges in the gene tree $T$ can be recovered unambiguously.
Set partitions, tableaux, and subspace profiles under regular diagonal matrices

We introduce a family of univariate polynomials indexed by integer partitions. At prime powers, they count the number of subspaces in a finite vector space that transform under a regular diagonal matrix in a specified manner. This enumeration formula is a combinatorial solution to a problem introduced by Bender, Coley, Robbins and Rumsey. At $1$, they count set partitions with specified block sizes. At $0$, they count standard tableaux of specified shape. At $-1$, they count standard shifted tableaux of a specified shape. These polynomials are generated by a new statistic on set partitions (called the interlacing number) as well as a polynomial statistic on standard tableaux. They allow us to express $q$-Stirling numbers of the second kind as sums over standard tableaux and as sums over set partitions.
For partitions whose parts are at most two, these polynomials are the non-zero entries of the Catalan triangle associated to the $q$-Hermite orthogonal polynomial sequence. In particular, when all parts are equal to two, they coincide with the polynomials defined by Touchard that enumerate chord diagrams by the number of crossings.
Hidden symmetries and Large N factorisation for permutation invariant matrix observables

Permutation invariant polynomial functions of matrices have previously been studied as the observables in matrix models invariant under $S_N$, the symmetric group of all permutations of $N$ objects. In this paper, the permutation invariant matrix observables (PIMOs) of degree $k$ are shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with equivalence classes of elements in the diagrammatic partition algebra $P_k(N)$. On a 4-dimensional subspace of the 13-parameter space of $S_N$ invariant Gaussian models, there is an enhanced $O(N)$ symmetry. At a special point in this subspace, is the simplest $O(N)$ invariant action. This is used to define an inner product on the PIMOs which is expressible as a trace of a product of elements in the partition algebra. The diagram algebra $P_k(N)$ is used to prove the large $N$ factorisation property of this inner product, which generalizes a familiar large $N$ factorisation for inner products of matrix traces invariant under continuous symmetries.

We introduce a correspondence between phylogenetic trees and Brauer diagrams, inspired by links between binary trees and matchings described by Diaconis and Holmes (1998). This correspondence gives rise to a range of semigroup structures on the set of phylogenetic trees, and opens the prospect of many applications. We furthermore extend the Diaconis-Holmes correspondence from binary trees to non-binary trees and to forests, showing for instance that the set of all forests is in bijection with the set of partitions of finite sets.
A Combinatorial Approach to Flag Codes
In network coding, a flag code is a collection of flags, that is, sequences of nested subspaces of a vector space over a finite field. Due to its definition as the sum of the corresponding subspace distances, the flag distance parameter encloses a hidden combinatorial structure. To bring it to light, in this paper, we interpret flag distances by means of distance paths drawn in a convenient distance support. The shape of such a support allows us to create an ad hoc associated Ferrers diagram frame where we develop a combinatorial approach to flag codes by relating the possible realizations of their minimum distance to different partitions of appropriate integers. This novel viewpoint permits to establish noteworthy connections between the flag code parameters and the ones of its projected codes in terms of well known concepts coming from the classical partitions theory.
Peaks of cylindric plane partitions
We study the asymptotic distribution, as the volume parameter goes to 1, of the peak (largest part) of finite- or slowly-growing-width cylindric plane partitions weighted by their trace, seam, and volume. There are two natural asymptotic regimes depending on the trace/seam parameters, and in both cases we obtain asymptotics governed by finite temperature (periodic) analogues of the Bessel and Airy gap probabilities from random matrix theory. In particular, the distributions we obtain interpolate \emph{in more than one way} between two well-known extremal value distributions: the Gumbel distribution of maxima of iid random variables and the Tracy--Widom distribution of maxima of eigenvalues of random Hermitian matrices. We also interpret our results in terms of last passage percolation on a cylinder, which yields to interesting connections to the Kardar--Parisi--Zhang equation.
Ramsey-type results for path covers and path partitions. II. Digraphs

Recently, the authors gave Ramsey-type results for the path cover/partition number of graphs. In this paper, we continue the research about them focusing on digraphs, and find a relationship between the path cover/partition number and forbidden structures in digraphs.
Let $D$ be a weakly connected digraph. A family $\mathcal{P}$ of subdigraphs of $D$ is called a {\it path cover} (resp. a {\it path partition}) of $D$ if $\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$ (resp. $\dot\bigcup _{P\in \mathcal{P}}V(P)=V(D)$) and every element of $\mathcal{P}$ is a directed path. The minimum cardinality of a path cover (resp. a path partition) of $D$ is denoted by ${\rm pc}(D)$ (resp. ${\rm pp}(D)$). In this paper, we find forbidden structure conditions assuring us that ${\rm pc}(D)$ (or ${\rm pp}(D)$) is bounded by a constant.

We propose a new representation of $k$-partite, $k$-uniform hypergraphs, that is, a hypergraph with a partition of vertices into $k$ parts such that each hyperedge contains exactly one vertex of each type; we call them $k$-hypergraphs for short. Given positive integers $\ell, d$, and $k$ with $\ell\leq d-1$ and $k={d\choose\ell}$, any finite set $P$ of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$ represents a $k$-hypergraph $G_P$ as follows. Each point in $P$ is covered by $k$ many axis-aligned affine $\ell$-dimensional subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^d$, which we call $\ell$-subspaces for brevity and which form the vertex set of $G_P$. We interpret each point in $P$ as a hyperedge of $G_P$ that contains each of the covering $\ell$-subspaces as a vertex. The class of \emph{$(d,\ell)$-hypergraphs} is the class of $k$-hypergraphs that can be represented in this way. The resulting classes of hypergraphs are fairly rich: Every $k$-hypergraph is a $(k,k-1)$-hypergraph. On the other hand, $(d,\ell)$-hypergraphs form a proper subclass of the class of all $k$-hypergraphs for $\ell<d-1$.
In this paper we give a natural structural characterization of $(d,\ell)$-hypergraphs based on vertex cuts. This characterization leads to a poly\-nomial-time recognition algorithm that decides for a given $k$-hypergraph whether or not it is a $(d,\ell)$-hypergraph and that computes a representation if existing. We assume that the dimension $d$ is constant and that the partitioning of the vertex set is prescribed.
