Zero Attractors of Partition Polynomials
A partition polynomial is a refinement of the partition number p(n) whose coefficients count some special partition statistic. Just as partition numbers have useful asymptotics so do partition polynomials. In fact, their asymptotics determine the limiting behavior of their zeros which form a network of curves inside the unit disk. An important new feature in their study requires a detailed analysis of. the \root dilogarithm" given as the real part of the square root of the usual dilogarithm.
Matroid Partition Property and the Secretary Problem
A matroid $\mathcal{M}$ on a set $E$ of elements has the $α$-partition property, for some $α>0$, if it is possible to (randomly) construct a partition matroid $\mathcal{P}$ on (a subset of) elements of $\mathcal{M}$ such that every independent set of $\mathcal{P}$ is independent in $\mathcal{M}$ and for any weight function $w:E\to\mathbb{R}_{\geq 0}$, the expected value of the optimum of the matroid secretary problem on $\mathcal{P}$ is at least an $α$-fraction of the optimum on $\mathcal{M}$. We show that the complete binary matroid, ${\cal B}_d$ on $\mathbb{F}_2^d$ does not satisfy the $α$-partition property for any constant $α>0$ (independent of $d$). Furthermore, we refute a recent conjecture of Bérczi, Schwarcz, and Yamaguchi by showing the same matroid is $2^d/d$-colorable but cannot be reduced to an $α2^d/d$-colorable partition matroid for any $α$ that is sublinear in $d$.
Some results on Berge's conjecture and Begin-End conjecture

Let $D$ be a digraph. A subset $S$ of $V(D)$ is a stable set if every pair of vertices in $S$ is non-adjacent in $D$. A collection of disjoint paths $\mathcal{P}$ of $D$ is a path partition of $V(D)$, if every vertex in $V(D)$ is on a path of $\mathcal{P}$. We say that a stable set $S$ and a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ are orthogonal if each path of $P$ contains exactly one vertex of $S$. A digraph $D$ satisfies the $α$-property if for every maximum stable set $S$ of $D$, there exists a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ such that $S$ and $\mathcal{P}$ are orthogonal. A digraph $D$ is $α$-diperfect if every induced subdigraph of $D$ satisfies the $α$-property. In 1982, Claude Berge proposed a characterization of $α$-diperfect digraphs in terms of forbidden anti-directed odd cycles. In 2018, Sambinelli, Silva and Lee proposed a similar conjecture. A digraph $D$ satisfies the Begin-End-property or BE-property if for every maximum stable set $S$ of $D$, there exists a path partition $\mathcal{P}$ such that (i) $S$ and $\mathcal{P}$ are orthogonal and (ii) for each path $P \in \mathcal{P}$, either the start or the end of $P$ lies in $S$. A digraph $D$ is BE-diperfect if every induced subdigraph of $D$ satisfies the BE-property. Sambinelli, Silva and Lee proposed a characterization of BE-diperfect digraphs in terms of forbidden blocking odd cycles. In this paper, we show some structural results for $α$-diperfect and BE-diperfect digraphs. In particular, we show that in every minimal counterexample $D$ to both conjectures, the size of a maximum stable set is smaller than $\vert V(D)\vert /2$. As an application we use these results to prove both conjectures for arc-locally in-semicomplete and arc-locally out-semicomplete digraphs.
On the maximal part in unrefinable partitions of triangular numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partition into distinct parts is refinable if one of its parts $a$ can be replaced by two different integers which do not belong to the partition and whose sum is $a$, and it is unrefinable otherwise. Clearly, the condition of being unrefinable imposes on the partition a non-trivial limitation on the size of the largest part and on the possible distributions of the parts. We prove a $O(n^{1/2})$-upper bound for the largest part in an unrefinable partition of $n$, and we call maximal those which reach the bound. We show a complete classification of maximal unrefinable partitions for triangular numbers, proving that if $n$ is even there exists only one maximal unrefinable partition of $n(n+1)/2$, and that if $n$ is odd the number of such partitions equals the number of partitions of $\lceil n/2\rceil$ into distinct parts. In the second case, an explicit bijection is provided.

$4$-Regular partitions and the pod function
Published • View PublicationBIB
The partition function $pod(n)$ enumerates the partitions of $n$ wherein odd parts are distinct and even parts are unrestricted. Recently, a number of properties for $pod(n)$ have been established. In this paper, for $k\in\{0,2\}$ we consider the partitions of $n$ into distinct parts not congruent to $k$ modulo $4$ and the $4$-regular partitions of $n$ in order to obtain new properties for $pod(n)$. In this context, we derive two new infinite families of linear inequalities involving the function $pod(n)$ and obtain new identities of Watson type.

Recently, Merca and Yee proved some partition identities involving two new partition statistics. We refine these statistics and generalize the results of Merca and Yee. We also correct a small mistake in a result of Merca and Yee.
Parity biases in partitions and restricted partitions

Let $p_{o}(n)$ (resp. $p_{e}(n)$) denote the number of partitions of $n$ with more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). Recently, Kim, Kim, and Lovejoy proved that $p_{o}(n)>p_{e}(n)$ for all $n>2$ and conjectured that $d_{o}(n)>d_{e}(n)$ for all $n>19$ where $d_{o}(n)$ (resp. $d_{e}(n)$) denote the number of partitions into distinct parts having more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts). In this paper we provide combinatorial proofs for both the result and the conjecture of Kim, Kim and Lovejoy. In addition, we show that if we restrict the smallest part of the partition to be $2$, then the parity bias is reversed. That is, if $q_{o}(n)$ (resp. $q_{e}(n)$) denote the number of partitions of $n$ with more odd parts (resp. even parts) than even parts (resp. odd parts) where the smallest part is at least $2$, then we have $q_o(n)<q_e(n)$ for all $n>7$. We also look at some more parity biases in partitions with restricted parts.

Partition identities from higher level crystals of $A_1^{(1)}$
Published in Proc. Amer. Math. Soc. 153 (2025), 1363-1382 • View PublicationBIB
We study perfect crystals for the standard modules of the affine Lie algebra $A_1^{(1)}$ at all levels using the theory of multi-grounded partitions. We prove a family of partition identities which are reminiscent of the Andrews-Gordon identities and companions to the Meurman-Primc identities, but with simple difference conditions involving absolute values.

On the action of the long cycle on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis
The complex irreducible representations of the symmetric group carry an important canonical basis called the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis. Although it is difficult to express how general permutations act on this basis, some distinguished permutations have beautiful descriptions. In 2010 Rhoades showed that the long cycle $(1, 2,..., n)$ acts by the jeu-de-taquin promotion operator in the case when the irreducible representation is indexed by a rectangular partition. We prove a generalisation of this theorem in two directions: on the one hand we lift the restriction on the shape of the partition, and on the other hand we enlarge the result to the collection of all separable permutations.
Extended Path Partition Conjecture for Semicomplete and Acyclic Compositions

Let $D$ be a digraph and let $λ(D)$ denote the number of vertices in a longest path of $D$. For a pair of vertex-disjoint induced subdigraphs $A$ and $B$ of $D$, we say that $(A,B)$ is a partition of $D$ if $V(A)\cup V(B)=V(D).$ The Path Partition Conjecture (PPC) states that for every digraph, $D$, and every integer $q$ with $1\leq q\leqλ(D)-1$, there exists a partition $(A,B)$ of $D$ such that $λ(A)\leq q$ and $λ(B)\leqλ(D)-q.$ Let $T$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_1,\dots, u_t\}$ and for every $i\in [t]$, let $H_i$ be a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, j_i\in [n_i]\}$. The {\em composition} $Q=T[H_1,\dots , H_t]$ of $T$ and $H_1,\ldots, H_t$ is a digraph with vertex set $\{u_{i,j_i}\colon\, i\in [t], j_i\in [n_i]\}$ and arc set $$A(Q)=\cup^t_{i=1}A(H_i)\cup \{u_{i,j_i}u_{p,q_p}\colon\, u_iu_p\in A(T), j_i\in [n_i], q_p\in [n_p]\}.$$ We say that $Q$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)} if $T$ is acyclic {(semicomplete, respectively)}. In this paper, we introduce a conjecture stronger than PPC using a property first studied by Bang-Jensen, Nielsen and Yeo (2006) and show that the stronger conjecture holds for wide families of acyclic and semicomplete compositions.
On the coalition number of trees

Let $G$ be a graph with vertex set $V$ and of order $n = |V|$, and let $δ(G)$ and $Δ(G)$ be the minimum and maximum degree of $G$, respectively. Two disjoint sets $V_1, V_2 \subseteq V$ form a coalition in $G$ if none of them is a dominating set of $G$ but their union $V_1\cup V_2$ is. A vertex partition $Ψ=\{V_1,\ldots, V_k\}$ of $V$ is a coalition partition of $G$ if every set $V_i\in Ψ$ is either a dominating set of $G$ with the cardinality $|V_i|=1$, or is not a dominating set but for some $V_j\in Ψ$, $V_i$ and $V_j$ form a coalition. The maximum cardinality of a coalition partition of $G$ is the coalition number $\mathcal{C}(G)$ of $G$. Given a coalition partition $Ψ= \{V_1, \ldots, V_k\}$ of $G$, a coalition graph $\CG(G, Ψ)$ is associated on $Ψ$ such that there is a one-to-one correspondence between its vertices and the members of $Ψ$, where two vertices of $\CG(G, Ψ)$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding sets form a coalition in $G$. In this paper, we partially solve one of the open problems posed in Haynes et al. \cite{coal0} and we solve two open problems posed by Haynes et al. \cite{coal1}. We characterize all graphs $G$ with $δ(G) \le 1$ and $\mathcal{C}(G)=n$, and we characterize all trees $T$ with $\mathcal{C}(T)=n-1$. We determine the number of coalition graphs that can be defined by all coalition partitions of a given path. Furthermore, we show that there is no universal coalition path, a path whose coalition partitions defines all possible coalition graphs.

Cohen Lenstra Partitions and Mutually Annihilating Matrices over a Finite Field

The $\mathrm{A}_2$ Andrews-Gordon identities and cylindric partitions
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. Ser. B 10 (2023) 715-765 • View PublicationBIB
Inspired by a number of recent papers by Corteel, Dousse, Foda, Uncu and Welsh on cylindric partitions and Rogers-Ramanujan-type identities, we obtain the $\mathrm{A}_2$ (or $\mathrm{A}_2^{(1)}$) analogues of the celebrated Andrews-Gordon identities. We further prove $q$-series identities that correspond to the infinite-level limit of the Andrews-Gordon identities for $\mathrm{A}_{r-1}$ (or $\mathrm{A}_{r-1}^{(1)}$) for arbitrary rank $r$. Our results for $\mathrm{A}_2$ also lead to conjectural, manifestly positive, combinatorial formulas for the $2$-variable generating function of cylindric partitions of rank $3$ and level $d$, such that $d$ is not a multiple of $3$.
Sidon-Ramsey and $B_{h}$-Ramsey numbers
Published • View PublicationBIB
For a given positive integer $k$, the Sidon-Ramsey number $\SR(k)$ is defined as the minimum value of $n$ such that, in every partition of the set $[1, n]$ into $k$ parts, there exists a part that contains two distinct pairs of numbers with the same sum. In other words, there is a part that is not a Sidon set. In this paper, we investigate the asymptotic behavior of this parameter and two generalizations of it. The first generalization involves replacing pairs of numbers with $h$-tuples, such that in every partition of $[1, n]$ into $k$ parts, there exists a part that contains two distinct $h$-tuples with the same sum. Alternatively, there is a part that is not a $B_h$ set. The second generalization considers the scenario where the interval $[1, n]$ is substituted with a non-necessarily symmetric $d$-dimensional box of the form $\prod_{i=1}^d[1,n_i]$. For the general case of $h\geq 3$ and non-symmetric boxes, before applying our method to obtain the Ramsey-type result, we needed to establish an upper bound for the corresponding density parameter.

Applications of Random Algebraic Constructions to Hardness of Approximation
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper, we show how one may (efficiently) construct two types of extremal combinatorial objects whose existence was previously conjectural. (*) Panchromatic Graphs: For fixed integer k, a k-panchromatic graph is, roughly speaking, a balanced bipartite graph with one partition class equipartitioned into k colour classes in which the common neighbourhoods of panchromatic k-sets of vertices are much larger than those of k-sets that repeat a colour. The question of their existence was raised by Karthik and Manurangsi [Combinatorica 2020]. (*) Threshold Graphs: For fixed integer k, a k-threshold graph is, roughly speaking, a balanced bipartite graph in which the common neighbourhoods of k-sets of vertices on one side are much larger than those of (k+1)-sets. The question of their existence was raised by Lin [JACM 2018]. As applications of our constructions, we show the following conditional time lower bounds on the parameterized set intersection problem where, given a collection of n sets over universe [n] and a parameter k, the goal is to find k sets with the largest intersection. (*) Assuming ETH, for any computable function F, no $n^{o(k)}$-time algorithm can approximate the parameterized set intersection problem up to factor F(k). This improves considerably on the previously best-known result under ETH due to Lin [JACM 2018], who ruled out any $n^{o(\sqrt{k})}$ time approximation algorithm for this problem. (*) Assuming SETH, for every $\varepsilon>0$ and any computable function F, no $n^{k-\varepsilon}$-time algorithm can approximate the parameterized set intersection problem up to factor F(k). No result of comparable strength was previously known under SETH, even for solving this problem exactly.

On some algorithmic aspects of hypergraphic matroids
Published • View PublicationBIB
Hypergraphics matroids were studied first by Lorea and later by Frank et al. They can be seen as generalizations of graphic matroids. Here we show that several algorithms developed for the graphic case can be extended to hypergraphic matroids. We treat the following: the separation problem for the associated polytope, testing independence, separation of partition inequalities, computing the rank of a set, computing the strength, computing the arboricity and network reinforcement.

Core size of a random partition for the Plancherel measure
Published in Annales de l'IHP (B) Probab. Stat. 59 (4) 2151-2188 (2023) • View PublicationBIB
We prove that the size of the e-core of a partition taken under the Poissonised Plancherel measure converges in distribution to, as the Poisson parameter goes to infinity and after a suitable renormalisation, a sum of e-1 mutually independent Gamma distributions with explicit parameters. Such a result already exists for the uniform measure on the set of partitions of n as n goes to infinity, the parameters of the Gamma distributions being all equal. We rely on the fact that the descent set of a partition is a determinantal point process under the Poissonised Plancherel measure and on a central limit theorem for such processes.

Zero-sum partitions of Abelian groups of order $2^n$
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 25:1, Combinatorics (March 1, 2023) dmtcs:9914 • View PublicationBIB
The following problem has been known since the 80's. Let $Γ$ be an Abelian group of order $m$ (denoted $|Γ|=m$), and let $t$ and $m_i$, $1 \leq i \leq t$, be positive integers such that $\sum_{i=1}^t m_i=m-1$. Determine when $Γ^*=Γ\setminus\{0\}$, the set of non-zero elements of $Γ$, can be partitioned into disjoint subsets $S_i$, $1 \leq i \leq t$, such that $|S_i|=m_i$ and $\sum_{s\in S_i}s=0$ for every $i$, $1 \leq i \leq t$. It is easy to check that $m_i\geq 2$ (for every $i$, $1 \leq i \leq t$) and $|I(Γ)|\neq 1$ are necessary conditions for the existence of such partitions, where $I(Γ)$ is the set of involutions of $Γ$. It was proved that the condition $m_i\geq 2$ is sufficient if and only if $|I(Γ)|\in\{0,3\}$. For other groups (i.e., for which $|I(Γ)|\neq 3$ and $|I(Γ)|>1$), only the case of any group $Γ$ with $Γ\cong(Z_2)^n$ for some positive integer $n$ has been analyzed completely so far, and it was shown independently by several authors that $m_i\geq 3$ is sufficient in this case. Moreover, recently Cichacz and Tuza proved that, if $|Γ|$ is large enough and $|I(Γ)|>1$, then $m_i\geq 4$ is sufficient. In this paper we generalize this result for every Abelian group of order $2^n$. Namely, we show that the condition $m_i\geq 3$ is sufficient for $Γ$ such that $|I(Γ)|>1$ and $|Γ|=2^n$, for every positive integer $n$. We also present some applications of this result to graph magic- and anti-magic-type labelings.

Improved lower bound on the on-line chain partitioning of semi-orders with representation
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains in the partition. The on-line chain partitioning problem involves finding the minimal number of chains needed by an optimal on-line algorithm. Chrobak and Ślusarek considered variants of the on-line chain partitioning problem in which the elements are presented as intervals and intersecting intervals are incomparable. They constructed an on-line algorithm which uses at most $3w-2$ chains, where $w$ is the width of the interval order, and showed that this algorithm is optimal. They also considered the problem restricted to intervals of unit-length and while they showed that first-fit needs at most $2w-1$ chains, over $30$ years later, it remains unknown whether a more optimal algorithm exists. In this paper, we improve upon previously known bounds and show that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $\lceil\frac{3}{2}w\rceil$ chains to partition a semi-order presented in the form of its unit-interval representation. As a consequence, we completely solve the problem for $w=3$.

Improved lower bounds on the on-line chain partitioning of posets of bounded dimension
An on-line chain partitioning algorithm receives a poset, one element at a time, and irrevocably assigns the element to one of the chains. Over 30 years ago, Szemerédi proved that any on-line algorithm could be forced to use $\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$. The maximum number of chains that can be forced on any on-line algorithm remains unknown. In a survey paper by Bosek et al., it is shown that Szemerédi's argument could be improved to obtain a lower bound almost twice as good. Variants of the problem were considered where the class is restricted to posets of bounded dimension or where the poset is presented via a realizer of size $d$. In this paper, we prove two results. First, we prove that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $(2-o(1))\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a $2$-dimensional poset of width $w$. Second, we prove that any on-line algorithm can be forced to use $(2-\frac{1}{d-1}-o(1))\binom{w+1}{2}$ chains to partition a poset of width $w$ presented via a realizer of size $d$.
