Smaller embeddings of partial $k$-star decompositions
Published • View PublicationBIB
A $k$-star is a complete bipartite graph $K_{1,k}$. For a graph $G$, a $k$-star decomposition of $G$ is a set of $k$-stars in $G$ whose edge sets partition the edge set of $G$. If we weaken this condition to only demand that each edge of $G$ is in at most one $k$-star, then the resulting object is a partial $k$-star decomposition of $G$. An embedding of a partial $k$-star decomposition $\mathcal{A}$ of a graph $G$ is a partial $k$-star decomposition $\mathcal{B}$ of another graph $H$ such that $\mathcal{A} \subseteq \mathcal{B}$ and $G$ is a subgraph of $H$. This paper considers the problem of when a partial $k$-star decomposition of $K_n$ can be embedded in a $k$-star decomposition of $K_{n+s}$ for a given integer $s$. We improve a result of Noble and Richardson, itself an improvement of a result of Hoffman and Roberts, by showing that any partial $k$-star decomposition of $K_n$ can be embedded in a $k$-star decomposition of $K_{n+s}$ for some $s$ such that $s < \frac{9}{4}k$ when $k$ is odd and $s < (6-2\sqrt{2})k$ when $k$ is even. For general $k$, these constants cannot be improved. We also obtain stronger results subject to placing a lower bound on $n$.
Multi-objective Matroid Optimization with Ordinal Weights
Published • View PublicationBIB
Bi-objective optimization problems on matroids are in general intractable and their corresponding decision problems are in general NP-hard. However, if one of the objective functions is restricted to binary cost coefficients the problem becomes efficiently solvable by an exhaustive swap algorithm. Binary cost coefficients often represent two categories and are thus a special case of ordinal coefficients that are in general non-additive. In this paper we consider ordinal objective functions with more than two categories in the context of matroid optimization. We introduce several problem variants that can be distinguished w.r.t. their respective optimization goals, analyze their interrelations, and derive a polynomial time solution method that is based on the repeated solution of matroid intersection problems. Numerical tests on minimum spanning tree problems and on partition matroids confirm the efficiency of the approach.

Compact Redistricting Plans Have Many Spanning Trees
Published • View PublicationBIB
In the design and analysis of political redistricting maps, it is often useful to be able to sample from the space of all partitions of the graph of census blocks into connected subgraphs of equal population. There are influential Markov chain Monte Carlo methods for doing so that are based on sampling and splitting random spanning trees. Empirical evidence suggests that the distributions such algorithms sample from place higher weight on more "compact" redistricting plans, which is a practically useful and desirable property. In this paper, we confirm these observations analytically, establishing an inverse exponential relationship between the total length of the boundaries separating districts and the probability that such a map will be sampled. This result provides theoretical underpinnings for algorithms that are already making a significant real-world impact.

A new graph decomposition method for bipartite graphs
Given a sufficiently large and sufficiently dense bipartite graph $G=(A, B; E),$ we present a novel method for decomposing the majority of the edges of $G$ into quasirandom graphs so that the vertex sets of these quasirandom graphs partition the majority of $A.$ The method works for relatively small or sparse graphs, and can be used to substitute the Regularity lemma of Szemerédi in some graph embedding problems.

Double-dimer condensation and the PT-DT correspondence
We resolve an open conjecture from algebraic geometry, which states that two generating functions for plane partition-like objects (the "box-counting" formulae for the Calabi-Yau topological vertices in Donaldson-Thomas theory and Pandharipande-Thomas theory) are equal up to a factor of MacMahon's generating function for plane partitions. The main tools in our proof are a Desnanot-Jacobi-type condensation identity, and a novel application of the tripartite double-dimer model of Kenyon-Wilson.

Vertebrate interval graphs
A vertebrate interval graph is an interval graph in which the maximum size of a set of independent vertices equals the number of maximal cliques. For any fixed $v \ge 1$, there is a polynomial-time algorithm for deciding whether a vertebrate interval graph admits a vertex partition into two induced subgraphs with claw number at most $v$. In particular, when $v = 2$, whether a vertebrate interval graph can be partitioned into two proper interval graphs can be decided in polynomial time.

Insertion and Lie Bracket Concerning Finite Sets
In this article we discuss the operations of partitions (sequence of disjoint finite subsets) which are quotient, insertion, composition and Lie bracket. Moreover, we discuss applications of those operations for Feymman diagrams and Kontesvich's graphs.

Factorization of classical characters twisted by roots of unity
Published in Journal of Algebra, Volume 609 (2022), 437-483 • View PublicationBIB
For a fixed integer $t \geq 2$, we consider the irreducible characters of representations of the classical groups of types A, B, C and D, namely $\text{GL}_{tn}, \text{SO}_{2tn+1}, \text{Sp}_{2tn}$ and $\text{O}_{2tn}$, evaluated at elements $ω^k x_i$ for $0 \leq k \leq t-1$ and $1 \leq i \leq n$, where $ω$ is a primitive $t$'th root of unity. The case of $\text{GL}_{tn}$ was considered by D. J. Littlewood (AMS press, 1950) and independently by D. Prasad (Israel J. Math., 2016). In this article, we give a uniform approach for all cases. In this article, we give a uniform approach for all cases. We also look at $\text{GL}_{tn+1}$ where we specialize the elements as before and set the last variable to $1$. In each case, we characterize partitions for which the character value is nonzero in terms of what we call $z$-asymmetric partitions, where $z$ is an integer which depends on the group. Moreover, if the character value is nonzero, we prove that it factorizes into characters of smaller classical groups. The proof uses Cauchy-type determinant formulas for these characters and involves a careful study of the beta sets of partitions. We also give product formulas for general $z$-asymmetric partitions and $z$-asymmetric $t$-cores. Lastly, we show that there are infinitely many $z$-asymmetric $t$-cores for $t \geq z+2$.

Partitioning an interval graph into subgraphs with small claws
The claw number of a graph $G$ is the largest number $v$ such that $K_{1,v}$ is an induced subgraph of $G$. Interval graphs with claw number at most $v$ are cluster graphs when $v = 1$, and are proper interval graphs when $v = 2$. Let $κ(n,v)$ be the smallest number $k$ such that every interval graph with $n$ vertices admits a vertex partition into $k$ induced subgraphs with claw number at most $v$. Let $\checkκ(w,v)$ be the smallest number $k$ such that every interval graph with claw number $w$ admits a vertex partition into $k$ induced subgraphs with claw number at most $v$. We show that $κ(n,v) = \lfloor\log_{v+1} (n v + 1)\rfloor$, and that $\lfloor\log_{v+1} w\rfloor + 1 \le \checkκ(w,v) \le \lfloor\log_{v+1} w\rfloor + 3$. Besides the combinatorial bounds, we also present a simple approximation algorithm for partitioning an interval graph into the minimum number of induced subgraphs with claw number at most $v$, with approximation ratio $3$ when $1 \le v \le 2$, and $2$ when $v \ge 3$.

Distributions on partitions arising from Hilbert schemes and hook lengths
Published • View PublicationBIB
Recent works at the interface of algebraic combinatorics, algebraic geometry, number theory, and topology have provided new integer-valued invariants on integer partitions. It is natural to consider the distribution of partitions when sorted by these invariants in congruence classes. We consider the prominent situations which arise from extensions of the Nekrasov-Okounkov hook product formula, and from Betti numbers of various Hilbert schemes of $n$ points on $\mathbb{C}^2.$ For the Hilbert schemes, we prove that homology is equidistributed as $n\to \infty.$ For $t$-hooks, we prove distributions which are often not equidistributed. The cases where $t\in \{2, 3\}$ stand out, as there are congruence classes where such counts are zero. To obtain these distributions, we obtain analytic results which are of independent interest. We determine the asymptotics, near roots of unity, of the ubiquitous infinite products $$ F_1(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξq^n\right), \ \ \ F_2(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-(ξq)^n\right) \ \ \ {\text {and}}\ \ \ F_3(ξ; q):=\prod_{n=1}^{\infty}\left(1-ξ^{-1}(ξq)^n\right). $$

Tiling with monochromatic bipartite graphs of bounded maximum degree
We prove that for any $r\in \mathbb{N}$, there exists a constant $C_r$ such that the following is true. Let $\mathcal{F}=\{F_1,F_2,\dots\}$ be an infinite sequence of bipartite graphs such that $|V(F_i)|=i$ and $Δ(F_i)\leq Δ$ hold for all $i$. Then in any $r$-edge coloured complete graph $K_n$, there is a collection of at most $\exp(C_rΔ)$ monochromatic subgraphs, each of which is isomorphic to an element of $\mathcal{F}$, whose vertex sets partition $V(K_n)$. This proves a conjecture of Corsten and Mendonça in a strong form and generalizes results on the multicolour Ramsey numbers of bounded-degree bipartite graphs.

Moments of permutation statistics and central limit theorems
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that if a permutation statistic can be written as a linear combination of bivincular patterns, then its moments can be expressed as a linear combination of factorials with constant coefficients. This generalizes a result of Zeilberger. We use an approach of Chern, Diaconis, Kane and Rhoades, previously applied on set partitions and matchings. In addition, we give a new proof of the central limit theorem (CLT) for the number of occurrences of classical patterns, which uses a lemma of Burstein and Hasto. We give a simple interpretation of this lemma and an analogous lemma that would imply the CLT for the number of occurrences of any vincular pattern. Furthermore, we obtain explicit formulas for the moments of the descents and the minimal descents statistics. The latter is used to give a new direct proof of the fact that we do not necessarily have asymptotic normality of the number of pattern occurrences in the case of bivincular patterns. Closed forms for some of the higher moments of several popular statistics on permutations are also obtained.

Extremal Uniquely Resolvable Multisets
Published • View PublicationBIB
For positive integers $n$ and $m$, consider a multiset of non-empty subsets of $[m]$ such that there is a \textit{unique} partition of these subsets into $n$ partitions of $[m]$. We study the maximum possible size $g(n,m)$ of such a multiset. We focus on the regime $n \leq 2^{m-1}-1$ and show that $g(n,m) \geq Ω(\frac{nm}{\log_2 n})$. When $n = 2^{cm}$ for any $c \in (0,1)$, this lower bound simplifies to $Ω(\frac{n}{c})$, and we show a matching upper bound $g(n,m) \leq O(\frac{n}{c}\log_2(\frac{1}{c}))$ that is optimal up to a factor of $\log_2(\frac{1}{c})$. We also compute $g(n,m)$ exactly when $n \geq 2^{m-1} - O(2^{\frac{m}{2}})$.

A Quadratic Time Locally Optimal Algorithm for NP-hard Equal Cardinality Partition Optimization
We study the optimization version of the equal cardinality set partition problem (where the absolute difference between the equal sized partitions' sums are minimized). While this problem is NP-hard and requires exponential complexity to solve in general, we have formulated a weaker version of this NP-hard problem, where the goal is to find a locally optimal solution. The local optimality considered in our work is under any swap between the opposing partitions' element pairs. To this end, we designed an algorithm which can produce such a locally optimal solution in $O(N^2)$ time and $O(N)$ space. Our approach does not require positive or integer inputs and works equally well under arbitrary input precisions. Thus, it is widely applicable in different problem scenarios.

Set partitions, fermions, and skein relations

Let $Θ_n = (θ_1, \dots, θ_n)$ and $Ξ_n = (ξ_1, \dots, ξ_n)$ be two lists of $n$ variables and consider the diagonal action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the exterior algebra $\wedge \{ Θ_n, Ξ_n \}$ generated by these variables. Jongwon Kim and the second author defined and studied the fermionic diagonal coinvariant ring $FDR_n$ obtained from $\wedge \{ Θ_n, Ξ_n \}$ by modding out by the $\mathfrak{S}_n$-invariants with vanishing constant term. On the other hand, the second author described an action of $\mathfrak{S}_n$ on the vector space with basis given by noncrossing set partitions of $\{1,\dots,n\}$ using a novel family of skein relations which resolve crossings in set partitions. We give an isomorphism between a natural Catalan-dimensional submodule of $FDR_n$ and the skein representation. To do this, we show that set partition skein relations arise naturally in the context of exterior algebras. Our approach yields an $\mathfrak{S}_n$-equivariant way to resolve crossings in set partitions. We use fermions to clarify, sharpen, and extend the theory of set partition crossing resolution.

The Complexity of Vector Partition
Published in Vietnam Journal of Mathematics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
We consider the {\em vector partition problem}, where $n$ agents, each with a $d$-dimensional attribute vector, are to be partitioned into $p$ parts so as to minimize cost which is a given function on the sums of attribute vectors in each part. The problem has applications in a variety of areas including clustering, logistics and health care. We consider the complexity and parameterized complexity of the problem under various assumptions on the natural parameters $p,d,a,t$ of the problem where $a$ is the maximum absolute value of any attribute and $t$ is the number of agent types, and raise some of the many remaining open problems.
Free Fermion Six Vertex Model: Symmetric Functions and Random Domino Tilings
Published • View PublicationBIB
Our work deals with symmetric rational functions and probabilistic models based on the fully inhomogeneous six vertex (ice type) model satisfying the free fermion condition. Two families of symmetric rational functions $F_λ,G_λ$ are defined as certain partition functions of the six vertex model, with variables corresponding to row rapidities, and the labeling signatures $λ=(λ_1\ge \ldots\ge λ_N)\in \mathbb{Z}^N$ encoding boundary conditions. These symmetric functions generalize Schur symmetric polynomials, as well as some of their variations, such as factorial and supersymmetric Schur polynomials. Cauchy type summation identities for $F_λ,G_λ$ and their skew counterparts follow from the Yang-Baxter equation. Using algebraic Bethe Ansatz, we obtain a double alternant type formula for $F_λ$ and a Sergeev-Pragacz type formula for $G_λ$. In the spirit of the theory of Schur processes, we define probability measures on sequences of signatures with probability weights proportional to products of our symmetric functions. We show that these measures can be viewed as determinantal point processes, and we express their correlation kernels in a double contour integral form. We present two proofs: The first is a direct computation of Eynard-Mehta type, and the second uses non-standard, inhomogeneous versions of fermionic operators in a Fock space coming from the algebraic Bethe Ansatz for the six vertex model. We also interpret our determinantal processes as random domino tilings of a half-strip with inhomogeneous domino weights. In the bulk, we show that the lattice asymptotic behavior of such domino tilings is described by a new determinantal point process on $\mathbb{Z}^{2}$, which can be viewed as an doubly-inhomogeneous generalization of the extended discrete sine process.

The category of finite strings

Partition models, Permutations of infinite sets without fixed points, and weak forms of AC
We study new relations of the following statements with weak choice principles in ZF and ZFA. 1. There does not exist an infinite Hausdorff space X such that every infinite subset of X contains an infinite compact subset. 2. If a field has an algebraic closure then it is unique up to isomorphism. 3. For every infinite set X, there exists a permutation of X without fixed points. Moreover, we prove that the principle ``Any infinite locally finite connected graph has a spanning m-bush for any even integer m greater than or equal to 4'' is equivalent to Kőnig's Lemma in ZF. We also study the new status of different weak choice principles in the finite partition model (a type of permutation model) introduced by B.B. Bruce in 2016. Further, we prove that Van Douwen's Choice Principle holds in two recently constructed known permutation models.
Combinatorics of NC-Probability Spaces with Independent Constants
Published • View PublicationBIB
Unlike classical and free independence, the boolean and monotone notions of independence lack of the property of independent constants. In the scalar case, this leads to restrictions for the central limit theorems, as observed by F. Oravecz. We characterize the property of independent constants from a combinatorial point of view, based on cumulants and set partitions. This characterization also holds for the operator-valued extension. Our considerations lead rather directly to very mild variations of boolean and monotone cumulants, where constants are now independent. These alternative probability theories are closely related to the usual notions. Hence, an important part of the boolean/monotone probability theories can be imported directly. We describe some standard combinatorial aspects of these variations (and their cyclic versions), such as their Mobius functions, which feature well-known combinatorial integer sequences. The new notions with independent constants seem also more strongly related to the operator-valued extension of c-free probability.
