Polynomial Induction and the Restriction Problem
Published in Indian J. Pure Appl. Math. (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We construct the polynomial induction functor, which is the right adjoint to the restriction functor from the category of polynomial representations of a general linear group to the category of representations of its Weyl group. This construction leads to a representation-theoretic proof of Littlewood's plethystic formula for the multiplicity of an irreducible representation of the symmetric group in such a restriction. The unimodality of certain bipartite partition functions follows.

On multi-interpolated multiple zeta values
In this note we introduce multi-interpolated multiple zeta values. We provide a basic decomposition of these objects involving ordered partitions. We also obtain identities for special instances of multi-interpolated multiple zeta values $ζ^{\vec{t}}(\{s\}_k)$, generalizing earlier results. Moreover, we introduce a product for multi-interpolated multiple zeta values.
A rank of partitions with overline designated summands
Published • View PublicationBIB
Andrews, Lewis and Lovejoy introduced the partition function $PD(n)$ as the number of partitions of $n$ with designated summands. In a recent work, Lin studied a partition function $PD_{t}(n)$ which counts the number of tagged parts over all the partitions of $n$ with designated summands. He proved that $PD_{t}(3n+2)$ is divisible by $3$. In this paper, we first introduce a structure named partitions with overline designated summands, which is counted by $PD_t(n)$. We then define a generalized rank of partitions with overline designated summands and give a combinatorial interpretation of the congruence for $PD_t(3n+2)$.

Self-conjugate $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and free rational Motzkin paths
Published • View PublicationBIB
A partition is called an $(s_1,s_2,\dots,s_p)$-core partition if it is simultaneously an $s_i$-core for all $i=1,2,\dots,p$. Simultaneous core partitions have been actively studied in various directions. In particular, researchers concerned with properties of such partitions when the sequence of $s_i$ is an arithmetic progression. In this paper, for $p\geq 2$ and relatively prime positive integers $s$ and $d$, we propose the $(s+d,d;a)$-abacus of a self-conjugate partition and establish a bijection between the set of self-conjugate $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and the set of free rational Motzkin paths with appropriate conditions. For $p=2,3$, we give formulae for the number of self-conjugate $(s,s+d,\dots,s+pd)$-core partitions and the number of self-conjugate $(s,s+1,\dots,s+p)$-core partitions with $m$ corners.

Star factorizations and noncrossing partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We develop the relationship between minimal transitive star factorizations and noncrossing partitions. This gives a new combinatorial proof of a result by Irving and Rattan, and a specialization of a result of Kreweras. It also arises in a poset on the symmetric group whose definition is motivated by the Subword Property of the Bruhat order.

On certain partition bijections related to Euler's partition problem
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give short elementary expositions of combinatorial proofs of some variants of Euler's partitition problem that were first addressed analytically by George Andrews, and later combinatorially by others. Our methods, based on ideas from a previous paper by the author , enable us to state and prove new generalizations of two of these results.
Some partition and analytical identities arising from Alladi, Andrews, Gordon bijections
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a work of 1995, Alladi, Andrews, and Gordon provided a generalization of the two Capparelli identities involving certain classes of integer partitions. Inspired by that contribution, in particular as regards the general setting and the tools the authors employed, we obtain new partition identities by identifying further sets of partitions that can be explicitly put into a one-to-one correspondence by the method described in the 1995 paper. As a further result, although of a different nature, we obtain an analytical identity of Rogers-Ramanujan type, involving generating functions, for a class of partition identities already found in that paper and that generalize the first Capparelli identity and include it as a particular case. To achieve this, we apply the same strategy as Kanade and Russel did in a recent paper. This method relies on the use of jagged partitions that can be seen as a more general kind of integer partitions.
Macroscopic network circulation for planar graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The analysis of networks, aimed at suitably defined functionality, often focuses on partitions into subnetworks that capture desired features. Chief among the relevant concepts is a 2-partition, that underlies the classical Cheeger inequality, and highlights a constriction (bottleneck) that limits accessibility between the respective parts of the network. In a similar spirit, the purpose of the present work is to introduce a new concept of maximal global circulation and to explore 3-partitions that expose this type of macroscopic feature of networks. Herein, graph circulation is motivated by transportation networks and probabilistic flows (Markov chains) on graphs. Our goal is to quantify the large-scale imbalance of network flows and delineate key parts that mediate such global features. While we introduce and propose these notions in a general setting, in this paper, we only work out the case of planar graphs. We explain that a scalar potential can be identified to encapsulate the concept of circulation, quite similarly as in the case of the curl of planar vector fields. Beyond planar graphs, in the general case, the problem to determine global circulation remains at present a combinatorial problem.

Parity Considerations for Mex-Related Partition Functions of Andrews and Newman
Published in Journal of Integer Sequences 23, no. 5 (2020), Article 20.5.7 • Search Publication
In a recent paper, Andrews and Newman extended the mex-function to integer partitions and proved many partition identities connected with these functions. In this paper, we present parity considerations of one of the families of functions they studied, namely $p_{t,t}(n)$. Among our results, we provide complete parity characterizations of $p_{1,1}(n)$ and $p_{3,3}(n)$.

A Note on Coloring Digraphs of Large Girth
Published • View PublicationBIB
The digirth of a digraph is the length of a shortest directed cycle. The dichromatic number $\vecχ(D)$ of a digraph $D$ is the smallest size of a partition of the vertex-set into subsets inducing acyclic subgraphs. A conjecture by Harutyunyan and Mohar states that $\vecχ(D) \le \left\lceil\fracΔ{4}\right\rceil+1$ for every digraph $D$ of digirth at least $3$ and maximum degree $Δ$. The best known partial result by Golowich shows that $\vecχ(D) \le \frac{2}{5}Δ+O(1)$. In this short note we prove for every $g \ge 2$ that if $D$ is a digraph of digirth at least $2g-1$ and maximum degree $Δ$, then $\vecχ(D) \le (\frac{1}{3}+\frac{1}{3g}) Δ+ O_g(1)$. This improves the bound of Golowich for digraphs without directed cycles of length at most $10$.

Card shuffling and $P$-partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this expository article, we highlight the direct connection between card shuffling and the functions known as $P$-partitions that come from algebraic combinatorics. While many (but not all) of the results we discuss are known, we give a unified treatment. The key idea is this: the probability of obtaining a permutation $π$ from shelf shuffling is the probability that a random $P$-partition is sorted by $π$, and the probability of obtaining $π$ from riffle shuffling is the probability that a random $P$-partition is sorted by $π^{-1}$.

Harmonic bases for generalized coinvariant algebras
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $k \leq n$ be nonnegative integers and let $λ$ be a partition of $k$. S. Griffin recently introduced a quotient $R_{n,λ}$ of the polynomial ring $\mathbb{Q}[x_1, \dots, x_n]$ in $n$ variables which simultaneously generalizes the Delta Conjecture coinvariant rings of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono and the cohomology rings of Springer fibers studied by Tanisaki and Garsia-Procesi. We describe the space $V_{n,λ}$ of harmonics attached to $R_{n,λ}$ and produce a harmonic basis of $R_{n,λ}$ indexed by certain ordered set partitions $\mathcal{OP}_{n,λ}$. The combinatorics of this basis is governed by a new extension of the {\em Lehmer code} of a permutation to $\mathcal{OP}_{n, λ}$.

Ordered set partitions, Garsia-Procesi modules, and rank varieties
Published in Trans. Amer. Math. Soc., 374 (2021), pp. 2609-2660 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a family of ideals $I_{n,λ,s}$ in $\mathbb{Q}[x_1,\dots,x_n]$ for $λ$ a partition of $k\leq n$ and an integer $s \geq \ell(λ)$. This family contains both the Tanisaki ideals $I_λ$ and the ideals $I_{n,k}$ of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono as special cases. We study the corresponding quotient rings $R_{n,λ,s}$ as symmetric group modules. When $n=k$ and $s$ is arbitrary, we recover the Garsia-Procesi modules, and when $λ=(1^k)$ and $s=k$, we recover the generalized coinvariant algebras of Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono. We give a monomial basis for $R_{n,λ,s}$, unifying the monomial bases studied by Garsia-Procesi and Haglund-Rhoades-Shimozono, and realize the $S_n$-module structure of $R_{n,λ,s}$ in terms of an action on $(n,λ,s)$-ordered set partitions. We also prove formulas for the Hilbert series and graded Frobenius characteristic of $R_{n,λ,s}$. We then connect our work with Eisenbud-Saltman rank varieties using results of Weyman. As an application of our work, we give a monomial basis, Hilbert series formula, and graded Frobenius characteristic formula for the coordinate ring of the scheme-theoretic intersection of a rank variety with diagonal matrices.

On the Shifted Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients and Littlewood-Richardson Coefficients
Published in Annals of Combinatorics 26, volume 26 (2022), 221-260 • View PublicationBIB
We give a new interpretation of the shifted Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $f_{λμ}^ν$ ($λ,μ,ν$ are strict partitions). The coefficients $g_{λμ}$ which appear in the decomposition of Schur $Q$-function $Q_λ$ into the sum of Schur functions $Q_λ= 2^{l(λ)}\sum_μg_{λμ}s_μ$ can be considered as a special case of $f_{λμ}^ν$ (here $λ$ is a strict partition of length $l(λ)$). We also give another description for $g_{λμ}$ as the cardinal of a subset of a set that counts Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{μ^tμ}^{\tildeλ}$. This new point of view allows us to establish connections between $g_{λμ}$ and $c_{μ^t μ}^{\tildeλ}$. More precisely, we prove that $g_{λμ}=g_{λμ^t}$, and $g_{λμ} \leq c_{μ^tμ}^{\tildeλ}$. We conjecture that $g_{λμ}^2 \leq c^{\tildeλ}_{μ^tμ}$ and formulate some conjectures on our combinatorial models which would imply this inequality if it is valid.
Minimal obstructions for a matrix partition problem in chordal graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
If $M$ is an $m \times m$ matrix over $\{ 0, 1, \ast \}$, an $M$-partition of a graph $G$ is a partition $(V_1, \dots V_m)$ such that $V_i$ is completely adjacent (non-adjacent) to $V_j$ if $M_{ij} = 1$ ($M_{ij} = 0$), and there are no further restrictions between $V_i$ and $V_j$ if $M_{ij} = \ast$. Having an $M$-partition is a hereditary property, thus it can be characterized by a set of minimal obstructions (forbidden induced subgraphs minimal with the property of not having an $M$-partition). It is known that for every $3 \times 3$ matrix $M$ over $\{ 0, 1, \ast \}$, there are finitely many chordal minimal obstructions for the problem of determining whether a graph admits an $M$-partition, except for two matrices, $M_1 = \left( \begin{array}{ccc} 0 & \ast & \ast \\ \ast & 0 & 1 \\ \ast & 1 & 0 \end{array} \right)$ and $M_2 = \left( \begin{array}{ccc} 0 & \ast & \ast \\ \ast & 0 & 1 \\ \ast & 1 & 1 \end{array} \right)$. For these two matrices an infinite family of chordal minimal obstructions is known (the same family for both matrices), but the complete set of minimal obstructions is not. In this work we present the complete family of chordal minimal obstructions for $M_1$.
Functorially finite hearts, simple-minded systems in negative cluster categories, and noncrossing partitions
Let $Q$ be an acyclic quiver and $w \geq 1$ be an integer. Let $\mathsf{C}_{-w} (\mathbf{k} Q)$ be the $(-w)$-cluster category of $\mathbf{k} Q$. We show that there is a bijection between simple-minded collections in $\mathsf{D}^b (\mathbf{k} Q)$ lying in a fundamental domain of $\mathsf{C}_{-w} (\mathbf{k} Q)$ and $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf{C}_{-w} (\mathbf{k} Q)$. This generalises the same result of Iyama-Jin in the case that $Q$ is Dynkin. A key step in our proof is the observation that the heart $\mathsf{H}$ of a bounded t-structure in a Hom-finite, Krull-Schmidt, $\mathbf{k}$-linear saturated triangulated category $\mathsf{D}$ is functorially finite in $\mathsf{D}$ if and only if $\mathsf{H}$ has enough injectives and enough projectives. We then establish a bijection between $w$-simple-minded systems in $\mathsf{C}_{-w} (\mathbf{k} Q)$ and positive $w$-noncrossing partitions of the corresponding Weyl group $W_Q$.

Hidden symmetries of weighted lozenge tilings

We study the weighted partition function for lozenge tilings, with weights given by multivariate rational functions originally defined by Morales, Pak and Panova (2019) in the context of the factorial Schur functions. We prove that this partition function is symmetric for large families of regions. We employ both combinatorial and algebraic proofs.

Spin q-Whittaker polynomials and deformed quantum Toda
Published • View PublicationBIB
Spin $q$-Whittaker symmetric polynomials labeled by partitions $λ$ were recently introduced by Borodin and Wheeler (arXiv:1701.06292) in the context of integrable $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ vertex models. They are a one-parameter deformation of the $t=0$ Macdonald polynomials. We present a new, more convenient modification of spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials and find two Macdonald type $q$-difference operators acting diagonally in these polynomials with eigenvalues, respectively, $q^{-λ_1}$ and $q^{λ_N}$ (where $λ$ is the polynomial's label). We study probability measures on interlacing arrays based on spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials, and match their observables with known stochastic particle systems such as the $q$-Hahn TASEP. In a scaling limit as $q\nearrow 1$, spin $q$-Whittaker polynomials turn into a new one-parameter deformation of the $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ Whittaker functions. The rescaled Pieri type rule gives rise to a one-parameter deformation of the quantum Toda Hamiltonian. The deformed Hamiltonian acts diagonally on our new spin Whittaker functions. On the stochastic side, as $q\nearrow 1$ we discover a multilevel extension of the beta polymer model of Barraquand and Corwin (arXiv:1503.04117), and relate it to spin Whittaker functions.

Sizes of Simultaneous Core Partitions
Published in Journal of Combinatorial Theory, Series A, 185, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
There is a well-studied correspondence by Jaclyn Anderson between partitions that avoid hooks of length s or t and certain binary strings of length s+t. Using this map, we prove that the total size of a random partition of this kind converges in law to Watson's U^2 distribution, as conjectured by Doron Zeilberger.

Dynamics of plane partitions: Proof of the Cameron-Fon-Der-Flaass conjecture
Published in Forum Math. Sigma 8, 2020, e62 • View PublicationBIB
One of the oldest outstanding problems in dynamical algebraic combinatorics is the following conjecture of P. Cameron and D. Fon-Der-Flaass (1995). Consider a plane partition $P$ in an $a \times b \times c$ box ${\sf B}$. Let $Ψ(P)$ denote the smallest plane partition containing the minimal elements of ${\sf B} - P$. Then if $p= a+b+c-1$ is prime, Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass conjectured that the cardinality of the $Ψ$-orbit of $P$ is always a multiple of $p$. This conjecture was established for $p \gg 0$ by Cameron and Fon-Der-Flaass (1995) and for slightly smaller values of $p$ in work of K. Dilks, J. Striker, and the second author (2017). Our main theorem specializes to prove this conjecture in full generality.
