Asymptotic bounds on graphical partitions and partition comparability
Published • View PublicationBIB
An integer partition is called graphical if it is the degree sequence of a simple graph. We prove that the probability that a uniformly chosen partition of size $n$ is graphical decreases to zero faster than $n^{-.003}$, answering a question of Pittel. A lower bound of $n^{-1/2}$ was proven by Erdős and Richmond, and so this demonstrates that the probability decreases polynomially. Key to our argument is an asymptotic result of Pittel characterizing the joint distribution of the first rows and columns of a uniformly random partition, combined with a characterization of graphical partitions due to Erdős and Gallai. Our proof also implies a polynomial upper bound for the probability that two randomly chosen partitions are comparable in the dominance order.
Regular partitions of gentle graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Szemeredi's Regularity Lemma is a very useful tool of extremal combinatorics. Recently, several refinements of this seminal result were obtained for special, more structured classes of graphs. We survey these results in their rich combinatorial context. In particular, we stress the link to the theory of (structural) sparsity, which leads to alternative proofs, refinements and solutions of open problems. It is interesting to note that many of these classes present challenging problems. Nevertheless, from the point of view of regularity lemma type statements, they appear as "gentle" classes.

Large Parts of Random Plane Partitions: a Poisson Limit Theorem
We propose an aproach for asymptotic analysis of plane partition statistics related to counts of parts whose sizes exceed a certain suitably chosen level. In our study, we use the concept of conjugate trace of a plane partition of the positive integer $n$, introduced by Stanley in 1973. We derive generating functions and determine the asymptotic behavior of counts of large parts using a general scheme based on the saddle point method. In this way, we are able to prove a Poisson limit theorem for the number of parts of a random and uniformly chosen plane partition of $n$, whose sizes are greater than a function $m=m(n)$ as $n\to\infty$. An explicit expression for $m(n)$ is also given.

Notes on Equitable Partitions into Matching Forests in Mixed Graphs and into $b$-branchings in Digraphs
Published in Discrete Mathematics & Theoretical Computer Science, vol. 24, no. 1, Graph Theory (March 31, 2022) dmtcs:8719 • View PublicationBIB
An equitable partition into branchings in a digraph is a partition of the arc set into branchings such that the sizes of any two branchings differ at most by one. For a digraph whose arc set can be partitioned into $k$ branchings, there always exists an equitable partition into $k$ branchings. In this paper, we present two extensions of equitable partitions into branchings in digraphs: those into matching forests in mixed graphs; and into $b$-branchings in digraphs. For matching forests, Király and Yokoi (2022) considered a tricriteria equitability based on the sizes of the matching forest, and the matching and branching therein. In contrast to this, we introduce a single-criterion equitability based on the number of covered vertices, which is plausible in the light of the delta-matroid structure of matching forests. While the existence of this equitable partition can be derived from a lemma in Király and Yokoi, we present its direct and simpler proof. For $b$-branchings, we define an equitability notion based on the size of the $b$-branching and the indegrees of all vertices, and prove that an equitable partition always exists. We then derive the integer decomposition property of the associated polytopes.

Equitable 2-partitions of Johnson graphs with the second eigenvalue
We study equitable 2-partitions of the Johnson graphs J(n,w) with a quotient matrix containing the eigenvalue lambda_2(w,n) = (w-2)(n-w-2)-2 in its spectrum. For any w>=4 and n>=2w, we find all admissible quotient matrices of such partitions, and characterize all these partitions for w>=4, n>2w, and for w>=7, n = 2w, up to equivalence.

Partition regularity for systems of diagonal equations
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider systems of $n$ diagonal equations in $k$th powers. Our main result shows that if the coefficient matrix of such a system is sufficiently non-singular, then the system is partition regular if and only if it satisfies Rado's columns condition. Furthermore, if the system also admits constant solutions, then we prove that the system has non-trivial solutions over every set of integers of positive upper density.

Counting monochromatic solutions to diagonal Diophantine equations
We show how to adapt the Hardy--Littlewood circle method to count monochromatic solutions to diagonal Diophantine equations. This delivers a lower bound which is optimal up to absolute constants. The method is illustrated on equations obtained by setting a diagonal quadratic form equal to a linear form. As a consequence, we determine an algebraic criterion for when such equations are partition regular. Our methods involve discrete harmonic analysis and require a number of `mixed' restriction estimates, which may be of independent interest.

Countable graphs are majority 3-choosable
Published in Discussiones Mathematicae Graph Theory 43(2) (2023) 499-506 • View PublicationBIB
The Unfriendly Partition Conjecture posits that every countable graph admits a 2-colouring in which for each vertex there are at least as many bichromatic edges containing that vertex as monochromatic ones. This is not known in general, but it is known that a 3-colouring with this property always exists. Anholcer, Bosek and Grytczuk recently gave a list-colouring version of this conjecture, and proved that such a colouring exists for lists of size 4. We improve their result to lists of size 3; the proof extends to directed acyclic graphs. We also discuss some generalisations.

Partitioning planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles into bounded degree forests
Published • View PublicationBIB
In 1976, Steinberg conjectured that planar graphs without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles are $3$-colorable. This conjecture attracted numerous researchers for about 40 years, until it was recently disproved by Cohen-Addad et al. (2017). However, coloring planar graphs with restrictions on cycle lengths is still an active area of research, and the interest in this particular graph class remains. Let $G$ be a planar graph without $4$-cycles and $5$-cycles. For integers $d_1$ and $d_2$ satisfying $d_1+d_2\geq8$ and $d_2\geq d_1\geq 2$, it is known that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $V_1$ and $V_2$, where each $V_i$ induces a graph with maximum degree at most $d_i$. Since Steinberg's Conjecture is false, a partition of $V(G)$ into two sets, where one induces an empty graph and the other induces a forest is not guaranteed. Our main theorem is at the intersection of the two aforementioned research directions. We prove that $V(G)$ can be partitioned into two sets $V_1$ and $V_2$, where $V_1$ induces a forest with maximum degree at most $3$ and $V_2$ induces a forest with maximum degree at most $4$; this is both a relaxation of Steinberg's conjecture and a strengthening of results by Sittitrai and Nakprasit (2019) in a much stronger form.
Equitable $d$-degenerate choosability of graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let ${\mathcal D}_d$ be the class of $d$-degenerate graphs and let $L$ be a list assignment for a graph $G$. A colouring of $G$ such that every vertex receives a colour from its list and the subgraph induced by vertices coloured with one color is a $d$-degenerate graph is called the $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring of $G$. For a $k$-uniform list assignment $L$ and $d\in\mathbb{N}_0$, a graph $G$ is equitably $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colorable if there is an $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring of $G$ such that the size of any colour class does not exceed $\left\lceil|V(G)|/k\right\rceil$. An equitable $(L,{\mathcal D}_d)$-colouring is a generalization of an equitable list coloring, introduced by Kostochka at al., and an equitable list arboricity presented by Zhang. Such a model can be useful in the network decomposition where some structural properties on subnets are imposed. In this paper we give a polynomial-time algorithm that for a given $(k,d)$-partition of $G$ with a $t$-uniform list assignment $L$ and $t\geq k$, returns its equitable $(L,\mathcal{D}_{d-1})$-colouring. In addition, we show that 3-dimensional grids are equitably $(L,\mathcal{D}_1)$-colorable for any $t$-uniform list assignment $L$ where $t\geq 3$.

Ising model on random triangulations of the disk: phase transition
Published • View PublicationBIB
In [arXiv:1806.06668], we have studied the Boltzmann random triangulation of the disk coupled to an Ising model on its faces with Dobrushin boundary condition at its critical temperature. In this paper, we investigate the phase transition of this model by extending our previous results to arbitrary temperature: We compute the partition function of the model at all temperatures, and derive several critical exponents associated with the infinite perimeter limit. We show that the model has a local limit at any temperature, whose properties depend drastically on the temperature. At high temperatures, the local limit is reminiscent of the uniform infinite half-planar triangulation (UIHPT) decorated with a subcritical percolation. At low temperatures, the local limit develops a bottleneck of finite width due to the energy cost of the main Ising interface between the two spin clusters imposed by the Dobrushin boundary condition. This change can be summarized by a novel order parameter with a nice geometric meaning. In addition to the phase transition, we also generalize our construction of the local limit from the two-step asymptotic regime used in [arXiv:1806.06668] to a more natural diagonal asymptotic regime. We obtain in this regime a scaling limit related to the length of the main Ising interface, which coincides with predictions from the continuum theory of quantum surfaces (a.k.a.\ Liouville quantum gravity).

Some multivariate master polynomials for permutations, set partitions, and perfect matchings, and their continued fractions
Published in Adv. Appl. Math. 138, 102341 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
We find Stieltjes-type and Jacobi-type continued fractions for some "master polynomials" that enumerate permutations, set partitions or perfect matchings with a large (sometimes infinite) number of simultaneous statistics. Our results contain many previously obtained identities as special cases, providing a common refinement of all of them.
Weight $q$-multiplicities for representations of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$
Published • View PublicationBIB
Given a simple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula is an alternating sum over the Weyl group whose terms involve the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function. For $ξ$ (a weight of $\mathfrak{g}$), the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function is a polynomial-valued function defined by $\wp_q(ξ)=\sum c_i q^i$ where $c_i$ is the number of ways $ξ$ can be written as a sum of $i$ positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this way, the evaluation of Kostant's weight $q$-multiplicity formula at $q = 1$ recovers the multiplicity of a weight in a highest weight representation of $\mathfrak{g}$. In this paper, we give closed formulas for computing weight $q$-multiplicities in a highest weight representation of the exceptional Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}_2$.

Glaisher's Partition problem
We generalize the well known Glaisher partition bijection result. For given positive integers n, d, both greater than 1, we provide a rich family of bijections between the set of partitions of n where at least one part is divisible by d, and the set of partitions where at least one part appears d or more times.
A Diophantine transport problem from 2016 and its possible solution in 1903
Published in Math. and Education in Math., Proc. of the Forty-ninth Spring Conf. of the Union of Bulgar. Mathematicians, 2020, 89-113 • Search Publication
Motivated by a recent Diophantine transport problem about how to transport profitably a group of persons or objects, we survey classical facts about solving systems of linear Diophantine equations and inequalities in nonnegative integers. We emphasize on the method of Elliott from 1903 and its further developed by MacMahon in his ``$Ω$-Calculus'' or Partition Analysis. As an illustration we obtain the solution of the considered transport problem in terms of a formal power series in several variables which is an expansion of a rational function of a special form.

Will the real Hardy-Ramanujan formula please stand up?
The Hardy-Ramanujan formula for the number of integer partitions of $n$ is one of the most popular results in partition theory. While the unabridged final formula has been celebrated as reflecting the genius of its authors, it has become all too common to attribute either some simplified version of the formula which is not as ingenious, or an alternative more elegant version which was expanded on afterwards by other authors. We attempt to provide a clear and compelling justification for distinguishing between the various formulas and simplifications, with a summarizing list of key take-aways in the final section.

A multi-plank generalization of the Bang and Kadets inequalities
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a convex body $K \subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is covered by the union of convex bodies $C_1, \ldots, C_N$, multiple subadditivity questions can be asked. Two classical results regard the subadditivity of the width (the smallest distance between two parallel hyperplanes that sandwich $K$) and the inradius (the largest radius of a ball contained in $K$): the sum of the widths of the $C_i$ is at least the width of $K$ (this is the plank theorem of Thoger Bang), and the sum of the inradii of the $C_i$ is at least the inradius of $K$ (this is due to Vladimir Kadets). We adapt the existing proofs of these results to prove a theorem on coverings by certain generalized non-convex "multi-planks". One corollary of this approach is a family of inequalities interpolating between Bang's theorem and Kadets's theorem. Other corollaries include results reminiscent of the Davenport--Alexander problem, such as the following: if an $m$-slice pizza cutter (that is, the union of $m$ equiangular rays in the plane with the same endpoint) in applied $N$ times to the unit disk, then there will be a piece of the partition of inradius at least $\frac{\sin π/m}{N + \sin π/m}$.

Combinatorial statistics on restricted growth functions containing a pattern exactly $k$ times
In this undergraduate thesis, we expand on the study of statistics on restricted growth functions avoiding patterns initiated by Campbell, et. al. Restricted growth functions are of interest because they are in bijection with set partitions. We examine the case when a restricted growth function contains a pattern exactly $k$ times, where $k=0$ corresponds to pattern avoidance. We prove results for several statistic and pattern combinations in the case when $k=1$ and define a new type of Wilf equivalence for these patterns. We also examine a poset related to $M(n)$, the poset of integer partitions into distinct parts, and give a conjecture on the new poset's unimodality. We begin with a brief history of the field and end with a list of conjectures.

Colourings, transversals and local sparsity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Motivated both by recently introduced forms of list colouring and by earlier work on independent transversals subject to a local sparsity condition, we use the semi-random method to prove the following result. For any function $μ$ satisfying $μ(d)=o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$, there is a function $λ$ satisfying $λ(d)=d+o(d)$ as $d\to\infty$ such that the following holds. For any graph $H$ and any partition of its vertices into parts of size at least $λ$ such that (a) for each part the average over its vertices of degree to other parts is at most $d$, and (b) the maximum degree from a vertex to some other part is at most $μ$, there is guaranteed to be a transversal of the parts that forms an independent set of $H$. This is a common strengthening of two results of Loh and Sudakov (2007) and Molloy and Thron (2012), each of which in turn implies an earlier result of Reed and Sudakov (2002).

Hecke-type series involving infinite products
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since the study by Jacobi and Hecke, Hecke-type series have received extensive attention. Especially, Hecke-type series involving infinite products have attracted broad interest among many mathematicians including Kac, Peterson, Andrews, Bressoud and Liu. Motivated by the works of these people, we study Hecke-type series involving infinite products. In particular, we establish some Hecke-type series involving infinite products and then obtain the truncated versions of these series as well as some other known series of the same type. As consequences, three families of inequalities for certain partition functions are also presented. Our proofs heavily rely on a formula from the work of Zhi-Guo Liu.
