Hidden invariance of last passage percolation and directed polymers
Published • View PublicationBIB
Last passage percolation and directed polymer models on $\mathbb Z^2$ are invariant under translation and certain reflections. When these models have an integrable structure coming from either the RSK correspondence or the geometric RSK correspondence (e.g. geometric last passage percolation or the log-gamma polymer), we show that these basic invariances can be combined with a decoupling property to yield a rich new set of symmetries. Among other results, we prove shift and rearrangement invariance statements for last passage times, geodesic locations, disjointness probabilities, polymer partition functions, and quenched polymer measures. We also use our framework to find `scrambled' versions of the classical RSK correspondence, and to find an RSK correspondence for moon polyominoes. The results extend to limiting models, including the KPZ equation and the Airy sheet.

On $k$-Bend and Monotonic $\ell$-Bend Edge Intersection Graphs of Paths on a Grid
Published • View PublicationBIB
If a graph $G$ can be represented by means of paths on a grid, such that each vertex of $G$ corresponds to one path on the grid and two vertices of $G$ are adjacent if and only if the corresponding paths share a grid edge, then this graph is called EPG and the representation is called EPG representation. A $k$-bend EPG representation is an EPG representation in which each path has at most $k$ bends. The class of all graphs that have a $k$-bend EPG representation is denoted by $B_k$. $B_\ell^m$ is the class of all graphs that have a monotonic $\ell$-bend EPG representation, i.e. an $\ell$-bend EPG representation, where each path is ascending in both columns and rows. It is trivial that $B^m_k\subseteq B_k$ for all $k$. Moreover, it is known that $B^m_k\subsetneqq B_k$, for $k=1$. By investigating the $B_k$-membership and the $B^m_k$-membership of complete bipartite graphs we prove that the inclusion is also proper for $k\in \{2,3,5\}$ and for $k\geqslant 7$. In particular, we derive necessary conditions for this membership that have to be fulfilled by $m$, $n$ and $k$, where $m$ and $n$ are the number of vertices on the two partition classes of the bipartite graph. We conjecture that $B_{k}^{m} \subsetneqq B_{k}$ holds also for $k\in \{4,6\}$. Furthermore, we show that $B_k \not\subseteq B_{2k-9}^m$ holds for all $k\geqslant 5$. This implies that restricting the shape of the paths can lead to a significant increase of the number of bends needed in an EPG representation. So far no bounds on the amount of that increase were known. We prove that $B_1 \subseteq B_3^m$ holds, providing the first result of this kind.

Sums of Commutators in Free Probability
Published in J. Funct. Anal. 280 (2021) Paper No. 108791, 29 • View PublicationBIB
We study the linear span of commutators of free random variables and show that these are the only quadratic forms which satisfy the following equivalent properties: * preservation free infinite divisibility * free and strong cancellation of odd cumulants * symmetric distribution for any free family. The main combinatorial tool is an involution on non-crossing partitions.

On the complexity of finding large odd induced subgraphs and odd colorings
Published • View PublicationBIB
We study the complexity of the problems of finding, given a graph $G$, a largest induced subgraph of $G$ with all degrees odd (called an odd subgraph), and the smallest number of odd subgraphs that partition $V(G)$. We call these parameters ${\sf mos}(G)$ and $χ_{\sf odd}(G)$, respectively. We prove that deciding whether $χ_{\sf odd}(G) \leq q$ is polynomial-time solvable if $q \leq 2$, and NP-complete otherwise. We provide algorithms in time $2^{O({\sf rw})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ and $2^{O(q \cdot {\sf rw})} \cdot n^{O(1)}$ to compute ${\sf mos}(G)$ and to decide whether $χ_{\sf odd}(G) \leq q$ on $n$-vertex graphs of rank-width at most ${\sf rw}$, respectively, and we prove that the dependency on rank-width is asymptotically optimal under the ETH. Finally, we give some tight bounds for these parameters on restricted graph classes or in relation to other parameters.

Graphs with multi-$4$-cycles and the Barnette's conjecture
Let ${\cal H}$ denote the family of all graphs with multi-$4$-cycles and suppose that $G \in {\cal H}$. Then, $G$ is a bipartite graph with a vertex bipartition $\{V_α, V_β\}$. We prove that for every vertex $v \in V_β$ and for every $2$-colouring $V_α \rightarrow \{1, 2\}$ there exists a $2$-colouring $V_β \rightarrow \{1, 2\}$ such that every cycle in $G$ is not monochromatic and $b(v) = 1$ ($b(v) = 2$). Let now $G$ be a simple even plane triangulation with a vertex $3$-partition $\{V_{1}, V_{2}, V_{3}\}$. Denote by $B_{i}$, $i = 1, 2, 3$, the set of all vertices in $V_i$ of degree at least $6$ in $G$. Suppose that $G[B_{1}\cup B_{3}]$ ($G[B_{2}\cup B_{3}]$) is a subgraph of $G$ induced by the set $B_{1}\cup B_{3}$ ($B_{2}\cup B_{3}$, respectively). Let $G^{*}$ be the dual graph of $G$ with the following $3$-face-colouring: a face $f$ of $G^{*}$ is coloured with $i$ if and only if the vertex $v = f^{*} \in V_{i}$. We prove that if $H = G[B_{1}\cup B_{3}] \cup G[B_{2}\cup B_{3}] \in {\cal H}$, then, for any edge chosen on a face coloured $3$ and of size at least $6$ in $G^{*}$, there exists a Hamilton cycle of $G^{*}$ which avoids this edge. Moreover, if every component of $H$ is $2$-connected, then there exists a Hamilton cycle of $G^{*}$ such that for every face coloured $3$ it avoids every second edge of this face or it avoids at most two edges of this face.

A Catlin-type Theorem for Graph Partitioning Avoiding Prescribed Subgraphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
As an extension of the Brooks theorem, Catlin in 1979 showed that if $H$ is neither an odd cycle nor a complete graph with maximum degree $Δ(H)$, then $H$ has a vertex $Δ(H)$-coloring such that one of the color classes is a maximum independent set. Let $G$ be a connected graph of order at least $2$. A $G$-free $k$-coloring of a graph $H$ is a partition of the vertex set of $H$ into $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that $H[V_i]$, the subgraph induced on $V_i$, does not contain any subgraph isomorphic to $G$. As a generalization of Catlin's theorem we show that a graph $H$ has a $G$-free $\lceil{Δ(H)\over δ(G)}\rceil$-coloring for which one of the color classes is a maximum $G$-free subset of $V(H)$ if $H$ satisfies the following conditions; (1) $H$ is not isomorphic to $G$ if $G$ is regular, (2) $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{kδ(G)+1}$ if $G \simeq K_{δ(G)+1}$, and (3) $H$ is not an odd cycle if $G$ is isomorphic to $K_2$. Indeed, we show even more, by proving that if $G_1,\ldots,G_k$ are connected graphs with minimum degrees $d_1,\ldots,d_k$, respectively, and $Δ(H)=\sum_{i=1}^{k}d_k$, then there is a partition of vertices of $H$ to $V_1,\ldots,V_k$ such that each $H[V_i]$ is $G_i$-free and moreover one of $V_i$s can be chosen in a way that $H[V_i]$ is a maximum $G_i$-free subset of $V(H)$ except either $k=1$ and $H$ is isomorphic to $G_1$, each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{d_i+1}$ and $H$ is not isomorphic to $K_{Δ(H)+1}$, or each $G_i$ is isomorphic to $K_{2}$ and $H$ is not an odd cycle.
The random 2-SAT partition function
Published • View PublicationBIB
We show that throughout the satisfiable phase the normalised number of satisfying assignments of a random $2$-SAT formula converges in probability to an expression predicted by the cavity method from statistical physics. The proof is based on showing that the Belief Propagation algorithm renders the correct marginal probability that a variable is set to `true' under a uniformly random satisfying assignment.

Truncated Homogeneous Symmetric Functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
Extending the elementary and complete homogeneous symmetric functions, we introduce the truncated homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ^{\dd}$ in $(\ref{THSF})$ for any integer partition $λ$, and show that the transition matrix from $h_λ^{\dd}$ to the power sum symmetric functions $p_λ$ is given by \[M(h^{\dd},p)=M'(p,m)z^{-1}D^{\dd},\] where $D^{\dd}$ and $z$ are nonsingular diagonal matrices. Consequently, $\{h_λ^{\dd}\}$ forms a basis of the ring $Λ$ of symmetric functions. In addition, we show that the generating function $H^{\dd}(t)=\ssum_{n\ge 0}h_n^{\dd}(x)t^n$ satisfies \[ω(H^{\dd}(t))=\left(H^{\dd}(-t)\right)^{-1},\] where $ω$ is the involution of $Λ$ sending each elementary symmetric function $e_λ$ to the complete homogeneous symmetric function $h_λ$.

On bipartite graphs having minimal fourth adjacency coefficient
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $G$ be a simple graph with order $n$ and adjacency matrix $\mathbf{A}(G)$. Let $φ(G; λ)=\det(λI-\mathbf{A}(G))=\sum_{i=0}^n\mathbf{a}_i(G)λ^{n-i}$ be the characteristic polynomial of $G$, where $\mathbf{a}_i(G)$ is called the $i$-th adjacency coefficient of $G$. Denote by $\mathfrak{B}_{n,m}$ the set of all connected graphs having $n$ vertices and $m$ edges. A bipartite graph $G$ is referred as bipartite optimal if $$\mathbf{a}_4(G)=min\{\mathbf{a}_4(H)|H\in \mathfrak{B}_{n,m}\}.$$ The value $min\{\mathbf{a}_4(H)|H\in \mathfrak{B}_{n,m}\}$ is called the minimal $4$-Sachs number in $\mathfrak{B}_{n,m}$, denoted by $\bar{\mathbf{a}}_4(\mathfrak{B}_{n,m})$. \vspace{2mm} For any given integer pair $(n,m)$, we in this paper investigate the bipartite optimal graphs. Firstly, we show that each bipartite optimal graph is a difference graph (see Theorem 10). Then we deduce some structural properties on bipartite optimal graphs. As applications of those properties, we determine all bipartite optimal $(n,m)$-graphs together with the corresponding minimal $4$-Sachs number for $n\ge 5$ and $n-1\le m\le 3(n-3)$. Finally, we express the problem of computing the minimal $4$-Sachs number as a class of combinatorial optimization problem, which relates to the partitions of positive integers.

The Genius Conjectures (via Bell Polynomials)
We present two related conjectures, arising in work on i-matchings in random r-regular bipartite graphs. The conjectures themselves are easily stated and involve only basic properties of convergent power series. One formulation involves Bell's polynomials. The conjectures name was chosen since we earnestly believe only a truly genius mathematician will prove them. We advise others not to try. A further belief is that the proof will arise from some deep properties of partitions.

Combinatorics of 3D directed animals on a simple cubic lattice
We provide combinatorial arguments based on a two-dimensional extension of a locally-free semigroup allowing us to compute the growth rate, $Λ$, of the partition function $Z_N=N^θΛ^N$ of the $N$-particle directed animals ($N\gg 1$) on a simple cubic lattice in a three-dimensional space. Establishing the bijection between the particular configuration of the lattice animal and a class of equivalences of words in the 2D projective locally-free semigroup, we find we find $\ln Λ= \lim_{N\to\infty} \ln Z_N / N$ with $Λ= 2(\sqrt{2}+1) \approx 4.8284$.

Weighted words at degree two, II: flat partitions, regular partitions, and application to level one perfect crystals
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent work, Keith and Xiong gave a refinement of Glaisher's theorem by using a Sylvester-style bijection. In this paper, we introduce two families of colored partitions, flat and regular partitions, and generalize the bijection of Keith and Xiong to these partitions. We then state two results, the first at degree one, where partitions have parts with primary colors, and the second result at degree two for secondary-colored partitions, using the result of the first paper of this series. These results allow us to easily retrieve the Frenkel-Kac character formulas of level one standard modules for the type $A_{2n}^{(2)}, D_{n+1}^{(2)}$ and $B_n^{(1)}$, and also to make the connection between the result stated in paper one and the representation theory.

On Sum-Of-Tails Identities
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this article, a finite analogue of the generalized sum-of-tails identity of Andrews and Freitas is obtained. We derive several interesting results as special cases of this analogue, in particular, a recent identity of Dixit, Eyyyunni, Maji and Sood. We derive a new extension of Abel's lemma with the help of which we obtain a one-parameter generalization of a sum-of-tails identity of Andrews, Garvan and Liang, an identity of Ramanujan as well as two new results - one for Ramanujan's function $σ(q)$ and another for the function recently introduced by Andrews and Ballantine. Later we introduce a new generalization $\mathrm{FFW}_{c}(n)$ of a function of Fokkink, Fokkink and Wang and derive an identity for its generating function. This gives, as a special case, a recent representation for the generating function of $\mathrm{spt}(n)$ given by Andrews, Garvan and Liang. We also obtain some weighted partition identities along with new representations for two of Ramanujan's third order mock theta functions through combinatorial techniques.

On directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem
Let $D=(V,A)$ be a digraph of order $n$ and let $W$ be any subset of $V$. We define the minimum semi-degree of $W$ in $D$ to be $δ^0(W)=\mbox{min}\{δ^+(W),δ^-(W)\}$, where $δ^+(W)$ is the minimum out-degree of $W$ in $D$ and $δ^-(W)$ is the minimum in-degree of $W$ in $D$. Let $k$ be an integer with $k\geq 1$. In this paper, we prove that for any positive integer partition $|W|=\sum_{i=1}^{k}n_i$ with $n_i\geq 2$ for each $i$, if $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$, then there are $k$ vertex disjoint cycles $C_1,\ldots,C_k$ in $D$ such that each $C_i$ contains exactly $n_i$ vertices of $W$. Moreover, the lower bound of $δ^0(W)$ can be improved to $\frac{n}{2}$ if $k=1$, and $\frac{n}{2}+|W|-1$ if $n\geq 2|W|$. The minimum semi-degree condition $δ^0(W)\geq \frac{3n-3}{4}$ is sharp in some sense and this result partially confirms the conjecture posed by Wang [Graphs and Combinatorics 16 (2000) 453-462]. It is also a directed version of the Sauer-Spender Theorem on vertex disjoint cycles in graphs [J. Combin. Theory B, 25 (1978) 295-302].

Determinantal point processes from symplectic and orthogonal characters and applications
We show that the symplectic and orthogonal character analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure (on integer partitions) are determinantal, with explicit correlation kernels. We apply this to prove certain Borodin-Okounkov-Gessel-type results concerning Toeplitz+Hankel and Fredholm determinants; a Szegő-type limit theorem; an edge Baik-Deift-Johansson-type asymptotical result for certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of the poissonized Plancherel measure; and a similar result for actual poissonized Plancherel measures supported on "almost symmetric" partitions.

Weighted words at degree two, I: Bressoud's algorithm as an energy transfer
Published • View PublicationBIB
In a recent paper, we generalized a partition identity stated by Siladić in his study of the level one standard module of type $A_2^{(2)}$. The proof used weighted words with an arbitrary number of primary colors and all the secondary colors obtained from these primary colors, and a brand new variant of the bijection of Bressoud for Schur's partition identity. In this paper, the first of two, we analyze this variant of Bressoud's algorithm in the framework of statistical mechanics, where an integer partition is viewed as an amount of energy shared, according to certain properties, between several states. This viewpoint allows us to generalize the previous result by considering a more general family of minimal difference conditions. For example, we generalize the Siladić identity to overpartitions. In the second paper, we connect this result to the Glaisher theorem and give some applications to level one perfect crystals.

Integer compositions, integer partitions, Fibonacci numbers, and generalizations of these have recently been shown to be interconnected via two-toned tilings of horizontal grids. In this article, we present refinements of two-toned tilings, describe functions which analyze them, and apply these to generalizations of integer compositions and partitions which interpolate between the two.

The derivation of the Hardy-Ramanujan-Rademacher formula for the number of partitions of $n$ is reviewed. Next, the steps for finding analogous formulas for certain restricted classes of partitions or overpartiitons is examined, bearing in mind how these calculations can be automated in a CAS. Finally, a number of new formulas of this type which were conjectured with the aid of \emph{Mathematica} are presented along with results of a test for their numerical accuracy.

The geometric Burge correspondence and the partition function of polymer replicas
Published in Sel. Math. New Ser. 27, #100 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We construct a geometric lifting of the Burge correspondence as a composition of local birational maps on generic Young-diagram-shaped arrays. We establish its fundamental relation to the geometric Robinson-Schensted-Knuth correspondence and to the geometric Schützenberger involution. We also show a number of properties of the geometric Burge correspondence, specializing them to the case of symmetric input arrays. In particular, our construction shows that such a mapping is volume preserving in log-log variables. As an application, we consider a model of two polymer paths of given length constrained to have the same endpoint, known as polymer replica. We prove that the distribution of the polymer replica partition function in a log-gamma random environment is a Whittaker measure, and deduce the corresponding Whittaker integral identity. For a certain choice of the parameters, we notice a distributional identity between our model and the symmetric log-gamma polymer studied by O'Connell, Seppäläinen, and Zygouras (2014).

Restricted k-color partitions, II
Published • View PublicationBIB
We consider $(k,j)$-colored partitions, partitions in which $k$ colors exist but at most $j$ colors may be chosen per size of part. In particular these generalize overpartitions. Advancing previous work, we find new congruences, including in previously unexplored cases where $k$ and $j$ are not coprime, as well as some noncongruences. As a useful aside, we give the apparently new generating function for the number of partitions in the $N \times M$ box with a given number of part sizes, and extend to multiple colors a conjecture of Dousse and Kim on unimodality in overpartitions.
