Overpartitions and Bressoud's conjecture, II
Published in European Journal of Combinatorics (2024) • View PublicationBIB
The main objective of this paper is to present an answer to Bressoud's conjecture for the case $j=0$, resulting in a complete solution to the conjecture. The case for $j=1$ has been recently resolved by Kim. Using the connection established in our previous paper between the ordinary partition function $B_0$ and the overpartition function $\overline{B}_1$, we found that the proof of Bressoud's conjecture for the case $j=0$ is equivalent to establishing an overpartition analogue of the conjecture for $j=1$. By generalizing Kim's method, we obtain the desired overpartition analogue of Bressoud's conjecture for $j=1$, which eventually enables us to confirm Bressoud's conjecture for the case $j=0$.

Non-Schur-positivity of chromatic symmetric functions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We provide a formula for every Schur coefficient in the chromatic symmetric function of a graph in terms of special rim hook tabloids. This formula is useful in confirming the non-Schur positivity of the chromatic symmetric function of a graph, especially when Stanley's stable partition method does not work. As applications, we determine Schur positive fan graphs and Schur positive complete tripartite graphs. We show that any squid graph obtained by adding $n$ leaves to a common vertex on an $m$-vertex cycle is not Schur positive if $m\ne 2n-1$, and conjecture that neither are the squid graphs with $m=2n-1$.
Complex Hadamard Diagonalisable Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In light of recent interest in Hadamard diagonalisable graphs (graphs whose Laplacian matrix is diagonalisable by a Hadamard matrix), we generalise this notion from real to complex Hadamard matrices. We give some basic properties and methods of constructing such graphs. We show that a large class of complex Hadamard diagonalisable graphs have vertex sets forming an equitable partition, and that the Laplacian eigenvalues must be even integers. We provide a number of examples and constructions of complex Hadamard diagonalisable graphs, including two special classes of graphs: the Cayley graphs over $\mathbb{Z}_r^d$, and the non--complete extended $p$--sum (NEPS). We discuss necessary and sufficient conditions for $(α, β)$--Laplacian fractional revival and perfect state transfer on continuous--time quantum walks described by complex Hadamard diagonalisable graphs and provide examples of such quantum state transfer.

Quasigraphs and skeletal partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We give a new proof of the Skeletal Lemma, which is the main technical tool in our paper on Hamilton cycles in line graphs [T. Kaiser and P. Vrána, Hamilton cycles in 5-connected line graphs, European J. Combin. 33 (2012), 924-947]. It generalises results on disjoint spanning trees in graphs to the context of 3-hypergraphs. The lemma is proved in a slightly stronger version that is more suitable for applications. The proof is simplified and formulated in a more accessible way.

Joins of Hypergraphs and Their Spectra
Published • View PublicationBIB
Here, we represent a general hypergraph by a matrix and study its spectrum. We extend the definition of equitable partition and joining operation for hypergraphs, and use those to compute eigenvalues of different hypergraphs. We derive the characteristics polynomial of a complete $m$-uniform $m$-partite hypergraph $K^m_{n_1,n_2,\dots,n_m}$. Studying edge corona of hypergraphs we find the complete spectrum of $s$-loose cycles $C^m_{L(s;n)}$ for $m \geq 2s+1$ and the characteristics polynomial of a $s$-loose paths $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$. Some of the eigenvalues of $P^{(m)}_{L(s;n)}$ are also derived. Moreover, using vertex corona, we show how to generate infinitely many pairs of non-isomorphic co-spectral hypergraphs.

Point partition numbers: decomposable and indecomposable critical graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
Graphs considered in this paper are finite, undirected and loopless, but we allow multiple edges. The point partition number $χ_t(G)$ is the least integer $k$ for which $G$ admits a coloring with $k$ colors such that each color class induces a $(t-1)$-degenerate subgraph of $G$. So $χ_1$ is the chromatic number and $χ_2$ is the point aboricity. The point partition number $χ_t$ with $t\geq 1$ was introduced by Lick and White. A graph $G$ is called $χ_t$-critical if every proper subgraph $H$ of $G$ satisfies $χ_t(H)<χ_t(G)$. In this paper we prove that if $G$ is a $χ_t$-critical graph whose order satisfies $|G|\leq 2χ_t(G)-2$, then $G$ can be obtained from two non-empty disjoint subgraphs $G_1$ and $G_2$ by adding $t$ edges between any pair $u,v$ of vertices with $u\in V(G_1)$ and $v\in V(G_2)$. Based on this result we establish the minimum number of edges possible in a $χ_t$-critical graph $G$ of order $n$ and with $χ_t(G)=k$, provided that $n\leq 2k-1$ and $t$ is even. For $t=1$ the corresponding two results were obtained in 1963 by Tibor Gallai.

The Hopf algebras of signed permutations, of weak quasi-symmetric functions and of Malvenuto-Reutenauer
Published in Advances in Math, vol 374, (2020) 107341 • View PublicationBIB
This paper builds on two covering Hopf algebras of the Hopf algebra QSym of quasi-symmetric functions, with linear bases parameterized by compositions. One is the Malvenuto-Reutenauer Hopf algebra SSym of permutations, mapped onto QSym by taking descents of permutations. The other one is the recently introduced Hopf algebra RQSym of weak quasi-symmetric functions, mapped onto QSym by extracting compositions from weak compositions. We extend these two surjective Hopf algebra homomorphisms into a commutative diagram by introducing a Hopf algebra HSym, linearly spanned by signed permutations from the hyperoctahedral groups, equipped with the shifted quasi-shuffle product and deconcatenation coproduct. Extracting a permutation from a signed permutation defines a Hopf algebra surjection form HSym to SSym and taking a suitable descent from a signed permutation defines a linear surjection from HSym to RQSym. The notion of signed $P$-partitions from signed permutations is introduced which, by taking generating functions, gives fundamental weak quasi-symmetric functions and sends the shifted quasi-shuffle product to the product of the corresponding generating functions. Together with the existing Hopf algebra surjections from SSym and RQSym to QSym, we obtain a commutative diagram of Hopf algebras revealing the close relationship among compositions, weak compositions, permutations and signed permutations.

Combinatorics and simplicial groupoids
This expository paper starts with a brief survey on the relation between partitions and surjections of sets, and then gives a quick introduction to the theories of incidence algebras, Segal groupoids and combinatorial species. The aim is to explain an objective construction, in terms of simplicial groupoids, of both the Faa di Bruno bialgebra and the plethystic bialgebra.

A Combinatorial Identity for the p-Binomial Coefficient Based on Abelian Groups
Published in Moscow Journal of Combinatorics and Number Theory, Vol. 10 (2021), No. 1, 13-24 • View PublicationBIB
For non-negative integers $k\leq n$, we prove a combinatorial identity for the $p$-binomial coefficient $\binom{n}{k}_p$ based on abelian p-groups. A purely combinatorial proof of this identity is not known. While proving this identity, for $r\in \mathbb{N}\cup\{0\},s\in \mathbb{N}$ and $p$ a prime, we present a purely combinatorial formula for the number of subgroups of $\mathbb{Z}^s$ of finite index $p^r$ with quotient isomorphic to the finite abelian $p$-group of type $\underlineλ$, which is a partition of $r$ into at most $s$ parts. This purely combinatorial formula is similar to that for the enumeration of subgroups of a certain type in a finite abelian $p$-group obtained by Lynne Marie Butler. As consequences, this combinatorial formula gives rise to many enumeration formulae that involve polynomials in $p$ with non-negative integer coefficients.

Binary compositions and semi-Pell compositions
In analogy with the semi-Fibonacci partitions studied recently by Andrews, we define semi-Pell compositions and semi-$m$-Pell compositions. We find that these are in bijection with certain weakly unimodal $m$-ary compositions. We give generating functions, bijective proofs, and a number of unexpected congruences for these objects.

Subdivided Claws and the Clique-Stable Set Separation Property
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a class of graphs closed under taking induced subgraphs. We say that $\mathcal{C}$ has the {\em clique-stable set separation property} if there exists $c \in \mathbb{N}$ such that for every graph $G \in \mathcal{C}$ there is a collection $\mathcal{P}$ of partitions $(X,Y)$ of the vertex set of $G$ with $|\mathcal{P}| \leq |V(G)|^c$ and with the following property: if $K$ is a clique of $G$, and $S$ is a stable set of $G$, and $K \cap S =\emptyset$, then there is $(X,Y) \in \mathcal{P}$ with $K \subseteq X$ and $S \subseteq Y$. In 1991 M. Yannakakis conjectured that the class of all graphs has the clique-stable set separation property, but this conjecture was disproved by Göös in 2014. Therefore it is now of interest to understand for which classes of graphs such a constant $c$ exists. In this paper we define two infinite families $\mathcal{S}, \mathcal{K}$ of graphs and show that for every $S \in \mathcal{S}$ and $K \in \mathcal{K}$, the class of graphs with no induced subgraph isomorphic to $S$ or $K$ has the clique-stable set separation property.

Iterated Ramsey bounds for the Hales-Jewett numbers
Consider the Hales-Jewett theorem. The $k$-dimensional version of it tells us that the combinatorial space $\mathcal{U}_{M, Λ} = \{ η\mid η: M \to Λ\}$ has, under suitable assumptions, monochromatic $k$-dimensional subspaces, where by a $k$-dimensional subspace we mean there exist a partition $\langle N_0, N_1, \cdots, N_k \rangle$ of $M$ such that $N_1, \cdots, N_k \neq \emptyset$ (but we allow $N_0$ to be empty) and some $ρ_0: N_0 \to Λ$, such that the subspace consists of those $ρ\in \mathcal{U}_{M, Λ}$ such that for $0<l<k+1, ρ\restriction N_l$ is constant and $ρ\restriction N_0= ρ_0.$ It seems natural to think it is better to have each $N_{l}, 0<l<k+1$ a singleton. However it is then impossible to always find monochromatic $k$-dimensional subspaces (for example color $η$ by $0$ if $|η^{-1}\{α\}|$ is an even number and by $1$ otherwise). But modulo restricting the sign of each $|η^{-1}\{α\}|$, we prove the parallel theorem -- whose proof is not related to the Hales-Jewett theorem. We then connect the two numbers by showing that the Hales-Jewett numbers are not too much above the present ones. This gives an alternative proof of the Hales-Jewett theorem.

Techniques for determining equality of the maximum nullity and the zero forcing number of a graph
Published • View PublicationBIB
It is known that the zero forcing number of a graph is an upper bound for the maximum nullity of the graph. In this paper, we search for characteristics of a graph that guarantee the maximum nullity of the graph and the zero forcing number of the graph are the same by studying a variety of graph parameters which bound the maximum nullity of a graph below. In particular, we introduce a new graph parameter which acts as a lower bound for the maximum nullity of the graph. As a result, we show that the Aztec Diamond graph's maximum nullity and zero forcing number are the same. Other graph parameters that are considered are a Colin de Verdiére type parameter and the vertex connectivity. We also use matrices, such as a divisor matrix of a graph and an equitable partition of the adjacency matrix of a graph, to establish a lower bound for the nullity of the graph's adjacency matrix.

The geodesic complexity of n-dimensional Klein bottles
The geodesic complexity of a metric space X is the smallest k for which there is a partition of X x X into ENRs E_0,...,E_k on each of which there is a continuous choice of minimal geodesic sigma(x_0,x_1) from x_0 to x_1. We prove that the geodesic complexity of an n-dimensional Klein bottle equals 2n. Its topological complexity remains unknown for n>2.
On joins of a clique and a co-clique as star complements in regular graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
In this paper we consider $r$-regular graphs $G$ that admit the vertex set partition such that one of the induced subgraphs is the join of an $s$-vertex clique and a $t$-vertex co-clique and represents a star complement for an eigenvalue $μ$ of $G$. The cases in which one of the parameters $s, t$ is less than 2 or $μ=r$ are already resolved. It is conjectured in [J. Wang, X. Yuan, L. Liu, Regular graphs with a prescribed complete multipartite graph as a star complement, Linear Algebra Appl.~579 (2019) 302--319] that if $s, t\geq 2$ and $μ\neq r$, then $μ=-2, t=2$ and $G=\overline{(s+1)K_2}$. For $μ=-t$ we verify this conjecture to be true. We further study the case in which $μ\neq-t$ and confirm the conjecture provided $t^2-4μ^2t-4μ^3=0$. For the remaining possibility we determine the structure of a putative counterexample and relate its existence to the existence of a particular 2-class block design. It occurs that the smallest counterexample would have 1265 vertices.

Planar maps and random partitions
This habilitation thesis summarizes the research that I have carried out from 2005 to 2019. It is organized in four chapters. The first three deal with random planar maps. Chapter 1 is about their metric properties: from a general map-mobile bijection, we compute the three-point function of quadrangulations, before discussing the connection with continued fractions. Chapter 2 presents the slice decomposition, a unified bijective approach that applies notably to irreducible maps. Chapter 3 concerns the $O(n)$ loop model on planar maps: by a combinatorial decomposition, we obtain the phase diagram before studying loop nesting statistics. Chapter 4 deals with random partitions and Schur processes, from steep domino tilings to fermionic systems.

Capelli operators for spherical superharmonics and the Dougall-Ramanujan identity
Published • View PublicationBIB
Let $(V,ω)$ be an orthosympectic $\mathbb Z_2$-graded vector space and let $\mathfrak g:=\mathfrak{gosp}(V,ω)$ denote the Lie superalgebra of similitudes of $(V,ω)$. When the space $\mathscr P(V)$ of superpolynomials on $V$ is \emph{not} a completely reducible $\mathfrak g$-module, we construct a natural basis $D_λ$ of Capelli operators for the algebra of $\mathfrak g$-invariant superpolynomial superdifferential operators on $V$, where the index set $\mathcal P$ is the set of integer partitions of length at most two. We compute the action of the operators $D_λ$ on maximal indecomposable components of $\mathscr P(V)$ explicitly, in terms of Knop-Sahi interpolation polynomials. Our results show that, unlike the cases where $\mathscr P(V)$ is completely reducible, the eigenvalues of a subfamily of the $D_λ$ are \emph{not} given by specializing the Knop-Sahi polynomials. Rather, the formulas for these eigenvalues involve suitably regularized forms of these polynomials. In addition, we demonstrate a close relationship between our eigenvalue formulas for this subfamily of Capelli operators and the Dougall-Ramanujan hypergeometric identity. We also transcend our results on the eigenvalues of Capelli operators to the Deligne category $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. More precisely, we define categorical Capelli operators $\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$ that induce morphisms of indecomposable components of symmetric powers of $\mathsf V_t$, where $\mathsf V_t$ is the generating object of $\mathsf{Rep}(O_t)$. We obtain formulas for the eigenvalue polynomials associated to the $\left\{\mathbf D_{t,λ}\right\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}$ that are analogous to our results for the operators $\{D_λ\}_{λ\in\mathcal P}^{}$.

Beyond Göllnitz' Theorem II: arbitrarily many primary colors
Published • View PublicationBIB
In $2003$, Alladi, Andrews and Berkovich proved a four-parameter partition identity lying beyond a celebrated identity of Göllnitz. Since then it has been an open problem to extend their work to five or more parameters. In part I of this pair of papers, we took a first step in this direction by giving a bijective proof of a reformulation of their result. We introduced forbidden patterns, bijectively proved a ten-colored partition identity, and then related, by another bijection, our identity to the Alladi-Andrews-Berkovich identity. In this second paper, we state and bijectively prove an $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$-colored partition identity beyond Göllnitz' theorem for any number $n$ of primary colors, along with the full set of the $\frac{n(n-1)}{2}$ secondary colors as the product of two distinct primary colors, generalizing the identity proved in the first paper. Like the ten-colored partitions, our family of $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$-colored partitions satisfy some simple minimal difference conditions while avoiding forbidden patterns. Furthermore, the $\frac{n(n+1)}{2}$-colored partitions have some remarkable properties, as they can be uniquely represented by oriented rooted forests which record the steps of the bijection.
