Two closely related discrete probability distributions are introduced. In each case the support is a set of vectors in $\mathbb{R}^n$ obtained from the partitions of the fixed positive integer $n$. These distributions arise naturally when considering equally-likely random permutations on the set of $n$ letters. For one of the distributions, the expectation vector and covariance matrix is derived. For the other distribution, conjectures for several elements of the expectation vector are provided.
Ear-Slicing for Matchings in Hypergraphs
We study when a given edge of a factor-critical graph is contained in a matching avoiding exactly one, pregiven vertex of the graph. We then apply the results to always partition the vertex-set of a $3$-regular, $3$-uniform hypergraph into at most one triangle (hyperedge of size $3$) and edges (subsets of size $2$ of hyperedges), corresponding to the intuition, and providing new insight to triangle and edge packings of Cornuéjols' and Pulleyblank's. The existence of such a packing can be considered to be a hypergraph variant of Petersen's theorem on perfect matchings, and leads to a simple proof for a sharpening of Lu's theorem on antifactors of graphs.

For any field $\mathbb{F}$ and polynomials $f_{2},f_{3}\in\mathbb{F}[x,y]$, let $Γ_{\mathbb{F}}(f_{2},f_{3})$ denote the bipartite graph with vertex partition $P\cup L$, where $P$ and $L$ are two copies of $\mathbb{F}^{3}$, and $(p_{1},p_{2},p_{3})\in P$ is adjacent to $[l_{1},l_{2},l_{3}]\in L$ if and only if $p_{2}+l_{2}=f_{2}(p_{1},l_{1})$ and $p_{3}+l_{3}=f_{3}(p_{1},l_{1})$. The graph $Γ_{3}(\mathbb{F})=Γ_{\mathbb{F}}(xy,xy^{2})$ is known to be of girth eight. When $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_q$ is a finite field of odd size $q$ or $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{F}_{\infty}$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, the graph $Γ_{3}(\mathbb{F})$ is conjectured to be the unique one with girth at least eight among those $Γ_{\mathbb{F}}(f_{2},f_{3})$ up to isomorphism. This conjecture has been confirmed for the case that both $f_{2},f_{3}$ are monomials over $\mathbb{F}_q$, and for the case that at least one of $f_{2},f_{3}$ is a monomial over $\mathbb{F}_{\infty}$. If one of $f_{2},f_{3}\in\mathbb{F}_q[x,y]$ is a monomial, it has also been proved the existence of a positive integer $M$ such that $G=Γ_{\mathbb{F}_{q^{M}}}(f_2,f_3)$ is isomorphic to $Γ_{3}(\mathbb{F}_{q^{M}})$ provided $G$ has girth at least eight. In this paper, these results are shown to be valid when the restriction on the polynomials $f_2,f_3$ is relaxed further to that one of them is the product of two univariate polynomials. Furthermore, all of such polynomials $f_2,f_3$ are characterized completely.
Some observations on the smallest adjacency eigenvalue of a graph
In this paper, we discuss various connections between the smallest eigenvalue of the adjacency matrix of a graph and its structure. There are several techniques for obtaining upper bounds on the smallest eigenvalue, and some of them are based on Rayleigh quotients, Cauchy interlacing using induced subgraphs, and Haemers interlacing with vertex partitions and quotient matrices. In this paper, we are interested in obtaining lower bounds for the smallest eigenvalue. Motivated by results on line graphs and generalized line graphs, we show how graph decompositions can be used to obtain such lower bounds.

The enumeration of inversion sequences avoiding a single pattern was initiated by Corteel--Martinez--Savage--Weselcouch and Mansour--Shattuck independently. Their work has sparked various investigations of generalized patterns in inversion sequences, including patterns of relation triples by Martinez and Savage, consecutive patterns by Auli and Elizalde, and vincular patterns by Lin and Yan. In this paper, we carried out the systematic study of inversion sequences avoiding two patterns of length $3$. Our enumerative results establish further connections to the OEIS sequences and some classical combinatorial objects, such as restricted permutations, weighted ordered trees and set partitions. Since patterns of relation triples are some special multiple patterns of length $3$, our results complement the work by Martinez and Savage. In particular, one of their conjectures regarding the enumeration of $(021,120)$-avoiding inversion sequences is solved.

Kanade and Russell conjectured several Rogers-Ramanujan-type partition identities, some of which are related to level $2$ characters of the affine Lie algebra $A_9^{(2)}$. Many of these conjectures have been proved by Bringmann, Jennings-Shaffer and Mahlburg. We give new proofs of five conjectures first proved by those authors, as well as four others that have been open until now. Our proofs for the new cases use quadratic transformations for Askey-Wilson and Rogers polynomials. We also obtain some related results, including a new proof of a partition identity conjectured by Capparelli and first proved by Andrews.
A combinatorial construction for two formulas in Slater's List
We set up a combinatorial framework for inclusion-exclusion on the partitions into distinct parts to obtain an alternative generating function of partitions into distinct and non-consecutive parts. In connection with Rogers-Ramanujan identities, the generating function yields two formulas in Slater's list. The same formulas were constructed by Hirschhorn. Similar formulas were obtained by Bringmann, Mahlburg and Nataraj. We also use staircases to give alternative triple series for partitions into $d-$distinct parts for any $d \geq 2$.

Kostant's partition function counts the number of distinct ways to express a weight of a classical Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ as a sum of positive roots of $\mathfrak{g}$. We refer to each of these expressions as decompositions of a weight. Our main result considers an infinite family of weights, irrespective of Lie type, for which we establish a closed formula for the $q$-analog of Kostant's partition function and then prove that the (normalized) distribution of the number of positive roots in the decomposition of any of these weights converges to a Gaussian distribution as the rank of the Lie algebra goes to infinity. We also extend these results to the highest root of the classical Lie algebras and we end our analysis with some directions for future research.

This paper is the second in a series of planned papers which provide first bijective proofs of alternating sign matrix results. Based on the main result from the first paper, we construct a bijective proof of the enumeration formula for alternating sign matrices and of the fact that alternating sign matrices are equinumerous with descending plane partitions. We are also able to refine these bijections by including the position of the unique $1$ in the top row of the matrix. Our constructions rely on signed sets and related notions. The starting point for these constructions were known ``computational'' proofs, but the combinatorial point of view led to several drastic modifications. We also provide computer code where all of our constructions have been implemented.
Nuclear partitions and a formula for $p(n)$
Define a "nuclear partition" to be an integer partition with no part equal to one. In this study we prove a simple formula to compute the partition function $p(n)$ by counting only the nuclear partitions of $n$, a vanishingly small subset by comparison with all partitions of $n$ as $n\to \infty$. Variations on the proof yield other formulas for $p(n)$, as well as Ramanujan-like congruences and an application to parity of the partition function.

We consider the problem of existence of perfect $2$-colorings (equitable $2$-partitions) of Hamming graphs with given parameters. We start with conditions on parameters of graphs and colorings that are necessary for their existence. Next we observe known constructions of perfect colorings and propose some new ones giving new parameters. At last, we deduce which parameters of colorings are covered by these constructions and give tables of admissible parameters of $2$-colorings in Hamming graphs $H(n,q)$ for small $n$ and $q$. Using the connection with perfect colorings, we construct an orthogonal array OA(2048,7,4,5).

In the first paper of this series, we gave infinite families of coloured partition identities which generalise Primc's and Capparelli's classical identities.
In this second paper, we study the representation theoretic consequences of our combinatorial results. First, we show that the difference conditions we defined in our $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity, which have a very simple expression, are actually the energy function with values in $\{0,1,2\}$ for the perfect crystal of the tensor product of the vector representation and its dual in $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$.
Then we introduce a new type of partitions, grounded partitions, which allows us to retrieve connections between character formulas and partition generating functions without having to perform a specialisation.
Finally, using the formulas for the generating functions of our generalised partitions, we recover the Kac-Peterson character formula for the characters of all the irreducible highest weight $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$-modules of level $1$, and give a new character formula as a sum of infinite products with obviously positive coefficients in the generators $e^{- α_i} \ (i \in \{0, \dots , n-1\}),$ where the $α_i$'s are the simple roots.

In these two companion papers, we give infinite families of partition identities which generalise Primc's and Capparelli's identities, and study their consequences on the theory of crystal bases of the affine Lie algebra $A_{n-1}^{(1)}.$
In this first paper, we focus on combinatorial aspects. We give a $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity by constructing a $n^2 \times n^2$ matrix of difference conditions, Primc's original identities corresponding to $n=2$ and $n=3$. While most coloured partition identities in the literature connect partitions with difference conditions to partitions with congruence conditions, in our case, the natural way to generalise these identities is to relate partitions with difference conditions to coloured Frobenius partitions. This gives a very simple expression for the generating function. With a particular specialisation of the colour variables, our generalisation also yields a partition identity with congruence conditions. Then, using a bijection from our new generalisation of Primc's identity, we deduce a multi-parameter family of identities on $(n^2-1)$-coloured partitions which generalise Capparelli's identity, also in terms of coloured Frobenius partitions. The particular case $n=2$ is Capparelli's identity and the case $n=3$ recovers an identity of Meurman and Primc.
In the second paper, we will focus on crystal theoretic aspects. We will show that the difference conditions we defined in our $n^2$-coloured generalisation of Primc's identity are actually energy functions for certain $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$ crystals. We will then use this result to retrieve the Kac-Peterson character formula and derive a new character formula as a sum of infinite products for all the irreducible highest weight $A_{n-1}^{(1)}$-modules of level $1$.
Partition and Cohen-Macaulay Extenders

If a pure simplicial complex is partitionable, then its $h$-vector has a combinatorial interpretation in terms of any partitioning of the complex. Given a non-partitionable complex $Δ$, we construct a complex $Γ\supseteq Δ$ of the same dimension such that both $Γ$ and the relative complex $(Γ,Δ)$ are partitionable. This allows us to rewrite the $h$-vector of any pure simplicial complex as the difference of two $h$-vectors of partitionable complexes, giving an analogous interpretation of the $h$-vector of a non-partitionable complex.
By contrast, for a given complex $Δ$ it is not always possible to find a complex $Γ$ such that both $Γ$ and $(Γ,Δ)$ are Cohen-Macaulay. We characterize when this is possible, and we show that the construction of such a $Γ$ in this case is remarkably straightforward. We end with a note on a similar notion for shellability and a connection to Simon's conjecture on extendable shellability for uniform matroids.
Cores and quotients of partitions through the Frobenius symbol

The Frobenius symbol was first introduced in 1900 by Frobenius as a way to encode an integer partition. In 1941, motivated by the modular representation theory of the symmetric group, Nakayama introduced the idea of a p-core partition, for p prime, using hook removals. In the following decade, Robinson, Littlewood, Staal and Farahat codified the $p$-quotient of such a partition, using variations of the star diagram. Since the 1970s, the convention has been to build up the theory of both core and quotients with the abacus construction, first introduced by G. James. In this paper we return to the earlier point of view. First we show that, for any positive integer t, the t-core and t-quotient of an integer partition can be directly obtained from its Frobenius symbol. The argument also works in the opposite direction: that is, given the Frobenius symbol of a t-core and a $t$-tuple of Frobenius symbols, one can recover the Frobenius symbol of the corresponding partition. One immediate application is the calculation of the Durfee number of the associated partition from the Frobenius symbols of the core and quotient. In 1991, J. Scopes gathered together the $p$-core partitions into families to prove that Donovan's conjecture holds for the symmetric groups at the prime p. We describe, using our methods, the action of the affine Weyl group W_p of type $A$ on Frobenius symbols, and use this to parametrize and compute the explicit number of Scopes families. In particular we enumerate both the infinite and finite Scopes families. Core partitions have also attracted recent interest in number theory. By constructing explicit and combinatorial bijections, we revisit some well-known identities originally obtained using sophisticated methods. We end with a close study of the relationship between certain hooks in the quotient and certain hooks in the associated partition.
Newton-Okounkov bodies for categories of modules over quiver Hecke algebras

We show that for a finite-type Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$, the representation theory of quiver Hecke algebras provides a natural framework for the construction of Newton-Okounkov bodies associated to the quantum coordinate rings $\Aqnw$. When $\mathfrak{g}$ is simply-laced, we use Kang-Kashiwara-Kim-Oh's monoidal categorification to investigate the cluster theory of these bodies. In particular, our construction yields a simplex $\ds$ for every seed $\s$ of $\Aqnw$.
We exhibit various properties of these simplices by characterizing their rational points, normal fans, and volumes. As an application, we prove an equality of rational functions relating Nakada's hook formula with the root partitions associated to cluster variables, suggesting further connections between cluster theory and the combinatorics of fully-commutative elements of Weyl groups.
List colouring of two matroids through reduction to partition matroids
In the list coloring problem for two matroids, we are given matroids $M_1=(S,{\cal I}_1)$ and $M_2=(S,{\cal I}_2)$ on the same ground set $S$, and the goal is to determine the smallest number $k$ such that given arbitrary lists $L_s$ of $k$ colors for $s\in S$, it is possible to choose a color from each list so that every monochromatic set is independent in both $M_1$ and $M_2$. When both $M_1$ and $M_2$ are partition matroids, Galvin's list coloring theorem for bipartite graphs gives the answer. One of the main open questions is to decide if there exists a constant $c$ such that if the coloring number is $k$ (i.e., the ground set can be partitioned into $k$ common independent sets), then the list coloring number is at most $c\cdot k$. We consider matroid classes that appear naturally in combinatorial optimization problems, namely graphic matroids, paving matroids and gammoids. We show that if both matroids are from these fundamental classes, then the list coloring number is at most twice the coloring number.
The proof is based on a new approach that reduces a matroid to a partition matroid without increasing its coloring number too much, and might be of independent combinatorial interest. In particular, we show that if $M=(S,{\cal I})$ is a matroid in which $S$ can be partitioned into $k$ independent sets, then there exists a partition matroid $N=(S,{\cal J})$ with ${\cal J}\subseteq{\cal I}$ in which $S$ can be partitioned into (A) $k$ independent sets if $M$ is a transversal matroid, (B) $2k-1$ independent sets if $M$ is a graphic matroid, (C) $\lceil kr/(r-1)\rceil$ independent sets if $M$ is a paving matroid of rank $r$, and (D) $2k-2$ independent sets if $M$ is a gammoid. We extend our results by showing that the existence of a matroid $N$ with $χ(N)\leq 2χ(M)$ implies the existence of a matroid $N'$ with $χ(N')\leq 2χ(M')$ for every truncation $M'$ of $M$.
Kempe Chains and Rooted Minors
A (minimal) transversal of a partition is a set which contains exactly one element from each member of the partition and nothing else. A coloring of a graph is a partition of its vertex set into anticliques, that is, sets of pairwise nonadjacent vertices. We study the following problem: Given a transversal $T$ of a proper coloring $\mathfrak{C}$ of some graph $G$, is there a partition $\mathfrak{H}$ of a subset of $V(G)$ into connected sets such that $T$ is a transversal of $\mathfrak{H}$ and such that two sets of $\mathfrak{H}$ are adjacent if their corresponding vertices from $T$ are connected by a path in $G$ using only two colors?
It has been suggested by the first author to study the following question: for any transversal $T$ of a coloring $\mathfrak{C}$ of order $k$ of some graph $G$ such that any pair of color classes induces a connected graph, does there exist such a partition $\mathfrak{H}$ with pairwise adjacent sets (which would prove Hadwiger's Conjecture for the class of uniquely optimally colorable graphs)? This is open for small $k \geq 5$, here we give a proof for the case that $k=5$ and the subgraph induced by $T$ is connected. Moreover, we show that for $k\geq 7$, it is not sufficient for the existence of $\mathfrak{H}$ as above just to force any two transversal vertices to be connected by a 2-colored path.

In recent work, M. Schneider and the first author studied a curious class of integer partitions called "sequentially congruent" partitions: the $m$th part is congruent to the $(m+1)$th part modulo $m$, with the smallest part congruent to zero modulo the number of parts. Let $p_{\mathcal S}(n)$ be the number of sequentially congruent partitions of $n,$ and let $p_{\square}(n)$ be the number of partitions of $n$ wherein all parts are squares. In this note we prove bijectively, for all $n\geq 1,$ that $p_{\mathcal S}(n) = p_{\square}(n).$ Our proof naturally extends to show other exotic classes of partitions of $n$ are in bijection with certain partitions of $n$ into $k$th powers.
Irreducible representations of the symmetric groups from slash homologies of p-complexes

In the 40s, Mayer introduced a construction of (simplicial) $p$-complex by using the unsigned boundary map and taking coefficients of chains modulo $p$. We look at such a $p$-complex associated to an $(n-1)$-simplex; in which case, this is also a $p$-complex of representations of the symmetric group of rank $n$ - specifically, of permutation modules associated to two-row compositions. In this article, we calculate the so-called slash homology - a homology theory introduced by Khovanov and Qi - of such a $p$-complex. We show that every non-trivial slash homology group appears as an irreducible representation associated to two-row partitions, and how this calculation leads to a basis of these irreducible representations given by the so-called $p$-standard tableaux.
