Gap between the largest and smallest parts of partitions and Berkovich and Uncu's conjectures
Published • View PublicationBIB
We prove three main conjectures of Berkovich and Uncu (Ann. Comb. 23 (2019) 263--284) on the inequalities between the numbers of partitions of $n$ with bounded gap between largest and smallest parts for sufficiently large $n$. Actually our theorems are stronger than their original conjectures. The analytic version of our results shows that the coefficients of some partition $q$-series are eventually positive.

On partitions with $k$ corners not containing the staircase with one more corner

We give three proofs of the following result conjectured by Carriegos, De Castro-García and Muñoz Castañeda in their work on enumeration of control systems: when $\binom{k+1}{2} \le n < \binom{k+2}{2}$, there are as many partitions of $n$ with $k$ corners as pairs of partitions $(α, β)$ such that $\binom{k+1}{2} + |α| + |β| = n$.

Partitions into distinct parts with bounded largest part
Published in Res. Number Theory 6 (2020) • View PublicationBIB
We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of partitions of $n$ into distinct parts where the largest part is at most $t\sqrt{n}$ for fixed $t \in \mathbb{R}$. Our method follows a probabilistic approach of Romik, who gave a simpler proof of Szekeres' asymptotic formula for distinct parts partitions when instead the number of parts is bounded by $t\sqrt{n}$. Although equivalent to a circle method/saddle-point method calculation, the probabilistic approach predicts the shape of the asymptotic formula, to some degree.

Duality of graded graphs through operads
Published in Annals of Combinatorics, 2021 • View PublicationBIB
Pairs of graded graphs, together with the Fomin property of graded graph duality, are rich combinatorial structures providing among other a framework for enumeration. The prototypical example is the one of the Young graded graph of integer partitions, allowing us to connect number of standard Young tableaux and numbers of permutations. Here, we use operads, that algebraic devices abstracting the notion of composition of combinatorial objects, to build pairs of graded graphs. For this, we first construct a pair of graded graphs where vertices are syntax trees, the elements of free nonsymmetric operads. This pair of graphs is dual for a new notion of duality called $φ$-diagonal duality, similar to the ones introduced by Fomin. We also provide a general way to build pairs of graded graphs from operads, wherein underlying posets are analogous to the Young lattice. Some examples of operads leading to new pairs of graded graphs involving integer compositions, Motzkin paths, and $m$-trees are considered.

Efficient Algorithms for Approximating Quantum Partition Functions
Published in Journal of Mathematical Physics 62, 022201 (2021) • View PublicationBIB
We establish a polynomial-time approximation algorithm for partition functions of quantum spin models at high temperature. Our algorithm is based on the quantum cluster expansion of Netočný and Redig and the cluster expansion approach to designing algorithms due to Helmuth, Perkins, and Regts. Similar results have previously been obtained by related methods, and our main contribution is a simple and slightly sharper analysis for the case of pairwise interactions on bounded-degree graphs.
Coloring Problems on Bipartite Graphs of Small Diameter
Published • View PublicationBIB
We investigate a number of coloring problems restricted to bipartite graphs with bounded diameter. First, we investigate the $k$-List Coloring, List $k$-Coloring, and $k$-Precoloring Extension problems on bipartite graphs with diameter at most $d$, proving NP-completeness in most cases, and leaving open only the List $3$-Coloring and $3$-Precoloring Extension problems when $d=3$. Some of these results are obtained through a proof that the Surjective $C_6$-Homomorphism problem is NP-complete on bipartite graphs with diameter at most four. Although the latter result has been already proved [Vikas, 2017], we present ours as an alternative simpler one. As a byproduct, we also get that $3$-Biclique Partition is NP-complete. An attempt to prove this result was presented in [Fleischner, Mujuni, Paulusma, and Szeider, 2009], but there was a flaw in their proof, which we identify and discuss here. Finally, we prove that the $3$-Fall Coloring problem is NP-complete on bipartite graphs with diameter at most four, and prove that NP-completeness for diameter three would also imply NP-completeness of $3$-Precoloring Extension on diameter three, thus closing the previously mentioned open cases. This would also answer a question posed in [Kratochvíl, Tuza, and Voigt, 2002].

Petrie symmetric functions
Published in Shortened version in: Algebraic Combinatorics, Volume 5 (2022) no. 5, pp. 947-1013 • View PublicationBIB
For any positive integer $k$ and nonnegative integer $m$, we consider the symmetric function $G\left( k,m\right)$ defined as the sum of all monomials of degree $m$ that involve only exponents smaller than $k$. We call $G\left( k,m\right)$ a "Petrie symmetric function" in honor of Flinders Petrie, as the coefficients in its expansion in the Schur basis are determinants of Petrie matrices (and thus belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $ by a classical result of Gordon and Wilkinson). More generally, we prove a Pieri-like rule for expanding a product of the form $G\left( k,m\right) \cdot s_μ$ in the Schur basis whenever $μ$ is a partition; all coefficients in this expansion belong to $\left\{ 0,1,-1\right\} $. We also show that $G\left( k,1\right) ,G\left( k,2\right) ,G\left( k,3\right) ,\ldots$ form an algebraically independent generating set for the symmetric functions when $1-k$ is invertible in the base ring, and we prove a conjecture of Liu and Polo about the expansion of $G\left( k,2k-1\right)$ in the Schur basis.

Troupes, Cumulants, and Stack-Sorting
Published • View PublicationBIB
Several sequences of free cumulants that count binary plane trees correspond to sequences of classical cumulants that count the decreasing versions of the same trees. Using two new operations on colored binary plane trees that we call insertion and decomposition, we prove that this surprising phenomenon holds for families of trees that we call troupes. We give a simple characterization of troupes, which provide a broad framework for generalizing several of the results known about West's stack-sorting map $s$. Indeed, we give new proofs of some of the main techniques that have been developed for understanding $s$; these new proofs are far more conceptual than the original ones, explain how the objects called valid hook configurations arise naturally, and generalize to troupes. For $t\in\{2,3\}$, we enumerate $t$-stack-sortable alternating permutations of odd length and $t$-stack-sortable permutations whose descents are all peaks. The unexpected connection between troupes and cumulants provides a powerful new tool for analyzing the stack-sorting map that hinges on free probability theory. We give numerous applications of this method. For example, we show that if $σ\in S_{n-1}$ is chosen uniformly at random, then the expected value of $\text{des}(s(σ))+1$ is \[\left(3-\sum_{j=0}^n\frac{1}{j!}\right)n.\] Furthermore, the variance of $\text{des}(s(σ))+1$ is asymptotically $(2+2e-e^2)n$. We obtain similar results concerning the expected number of descents of postorder readings of decreasing colored binary plane trees. We also obtain improved estimates for $|s(S_n)|$ and an improved lower bound for the degree of noninvertibility of $s$. We give two novel formulas that convert from free to classical cumulants. The first is given by a sum over noncrossing partitions, and the second is given by a sum over $231$-avoiding valid hook configurations. We pose several open problems.

A Combinatorial Description of Certain Polynomials Related to the XYZ Spin Chain
Published in SIGMA 16 (2020), 101, 26 pages • View PublicationBIB
We study the connection between the three-color model and the polynomials $q_n(z)$ of Bazhanov and Mangazeev, which appear in the eigenvectors of the Hamiltonian of the XYZ spin chain. By specializing the parameters in the partition function of the 8VSOS model with DWBC and reflecting end, we find an explicit combinatorial expression for $q_n(z)$ in terms of the partition function of the three-color model with the same boundary conditions. Bazhanov and Mangazeev conjectured that $q_n(z)$ has positive integer coefficients. We prove the weaker statement that $q_n(z+1)$ and $(z+1)^{n(n+1)}q_n(1/(z+1))$ have positive integer coefficients. Furthermore, for the three-color model, we find some results on the number of states with a given number of faces of each color, and we compute strict bounds for the possible number of faces of each color.
Cumulant-cumulant relations in free probability theory from Magnus' expansion
Published in Foundations of Computational Mathematics 22, 733-755 (2022) • View PublicationBIB
Relations between moments and cumulants play a central role in both classical and non-commutative probability theory. The latter allows for several distinct families of cumulants corresponding to different types of independences: free, Boolean and monotone. Relations among those cumulants have been studied recently. In this work we focus on the problem of expressing with a closed formula multivariate monotone cumulants in terms of free and Boolean cumulants. In the process we introduce various constructions and statistics on non-crossing partitions. Our approach is based on a pre-Lie algebra structure on cumulant functionals. Relations among cumulants are described in terms of the pre-Lie Magnus expansion combined with results on the continuous Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula due to A. Murua.

On local Turán problems
Published • View PublicationBIB
Since its formulation, Turán's hypergraph problems have been among the most challenging open problems in extremal combinatorics. One of them is the following: given a $3$-uniform hypergraph $\mathcal{F}$ on $n$ vertices in which any five vertices span at least one edge, prove that $|\mathcal{F}| \ge (1/4 -o(1))\binom{n}{3}$. The construction showing that this bound would be best possible is simply $\binom{X}{3} \cup \binom{Y}{3}$ where $X$ and $Y$ evenly partition the vertex set. This construction has the following more general $(2p+1, p+1)$-property: any set of $2p+1$ vertices spans a complete sub-hypergraph on $p+1$ vertices. One of our main results says that, quite surprisingly, for all $p>2$ the $(2p+1,p+1)$-property implies the conjectured lower bound.

Phase transitions from $\exp(n^{1/2})$ to $\exp(n^{2/3})$ in the asymptotics of banded plane partitions
Published • View PublicationBIB
We examine the asymptotics of a class of banded plane partitions under a varying bandwidth parameter $m$, and clarify the transitional behavior for large size $n$ and increasing $m=m(n)$ to be from $c_1 n^{-1} \exp(c_2 n^{1/2})$ to $c_3 n^{-49/72} \exp(c_4 n^{2/3} + c_5 n^{1/3})$ for some explicit coefficients $c_1, \ldots, c_5$. The method of proof, which is a unified saddle-point analysis for all phases, is general and can be extended to other classes of plane partitions.

Combinatorics of Type D Exceptional Sequences
Published • View PublicationBIB
Exceptional sequences are important sequences of quiver representations in the study of representation theory of algebras. They are also closely related to the theory of cluster algebras and the combinatorics of Coxeter groups. We combinatorially classify exceptional sequences of a family of type D Dynkin quivers, and we show how our model for exceptional sequences connects to the combinatorics of type D noncrossing partitions.

Non-orientable branched coverings, $b$-Hurwitz numbers, and positivity for multiparametric Jack expansions
Published in Adv. Math. 409, 108645, 2022 • View PublicationBIB
We introduce a one-parameter deformation of the 2-Toda tau-function of (weighted) Hurwitz numbers, obtained by deforming Schur functions into Jack symmetric functions. We show that its coefficients are polynomials in the deformation parameter $b$ with nonnegative integer coefficients. These coefficients count generalized branched coverings of the sphere by an arbitrary surface, orientable or not, with an appropriate $b$-weighting that "measures" in some sense their non-orientability. Notable special cases include non-orientable dessins d'enfants for which we prove the most general result so far towards the Matching-Jack conjecture and the "$b$-conjecture" of Goulden and Jackson from 1996, expansions of the $β$-ensemble matrix model, deformations of the HCIZ integral, and $b$-Hurwitz numbers that we introduce here and that are $b$-deformations of classical (single or double) Hurwitz numbers obtained for $b=0$. A key role in our proof is played by a combinatorial model of non-orientable constellations equipped with a suitable $b$-weighting, whose partition function satisfies an infinite set of PDEs. These PDEs have two definitions, one given by Lax equations, the other one following an explicit combinatorial decomposition.
Higher rank motivic Donaldson-Thomas invariants of $\mathbb{A}^3$ via wall-crossing, and asymptotics

We compute, via motivic wall-crossing, the generating function of virtual motives of the Quot scheme of points on $\mathbb{A}^3$, generalising to higher rank a result of Behrend, Bryan and Szendrői. We show that this motivic partition function converges to a Gaussian distribution, extending a result of Morrison.

Large Deviation Principles via Spherical Integrals
Published in Prob. Math. Phys. 3 (2022) 543-625 • View PublicationBIB
In this article, we develop a framework to study the large deviation principle for matrix models and their quantized versions, by tilting the measures using the limits of spherical integrals obtained in [46,47]. As examples, we obtain 1. a large deviation principle for the empirical distribution of the diagonal entries of $UB_NU^*$, for a sequence of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $B_N$ and unitary Haar distributed matrices $U$; 2. a large deviation upper bound for the empirical eigenvalue distribution of $A_N+UB_NU^*$, for two sequences of $N\times N$ diagonal matrices $A_N, B_N$, and their complementary lower bounds at measures which are described by the free product with amalgamation; 3. a large deviation principle for the Kostka number $K_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbolη_N}$, for two sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbolη_N$ with at most $N$ rows; 4. a large deviation upper bound for the Littlewood-Richardson coefficients $c_{\boldsymbolλ_N \boldsymbol η_N}^{\boldsymbol κ_N}$, for three sequences of partitions $\boldsymbolλ_N, \boldsymbol η_N, \boldsymbol κ_N$ with at most $N$ rows, and their complementary lower bounds at nice measures.

Dichotomy for Graph Homomorphisms with Complex Values on Bounded Degree Graphs
Published • View PublicationBIB
The complexity of graph homomorphisms has been a subject of intense study [11, 12, 4, 42, 21, 17, 6, 20]. The partition function $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ of graph homomorphism is defined by a symmetric matrix $\mathbf A$ over $\mathbb C$. We prove that the complexity dichotomy of [6] extends to bounded degree graphs. More precisely, we prove that either $G \mapsto Z_{\mathbf A}(G)$ is computable in polynomial-time for every $G$, or for some $Δ> 0$ it is #P-hard over (simple) graphs $G$ with maximum degree $Δ(G) \le Δ$. The tractability criterion on $\mathbf A$ for this dichotomy is explicit, and can be decided in polynomial-time in the size of $\mathbf A$. We also show that the dichotomy is effective in that either a P-time algorithm for, or a reduction from #SAT to, $Z_{\mathbf A}(\cdot)$ can be constructed from $\mathbf A$, in the respective cases.

On the parity of the number of partitions with odd multiplicities
Published in Int. J. Number Theory 17 (2021), no. 7, 1717--1728 • View PublicationBIB
Recently, Hirschhorn and the first author considered the parity of the function $a(n)$ which counts the number of integer partitions of $n$ wherein each part appears with odd multiplicity. They derived an effective characterization of the parity of $a(2m)$ based solely on properties of $m.$ In this note, we quickly reprove their result, and then extend it to an explicit characterization of the parity of $a(n)$ for all $n\not\equiv 7 \pmod{8}.$ We also exhibit some infinite families of congruences modulo 2 which follow from these characterizations. We conclude by discussing the case $n\equiv 7 \pmod{8}$, where, interestingly, the behavior of $a(n)$ modulo 2 appears to be entirely different. In particular, we conjecture that, asymptotically, $a(8m+7)$ is odd precisely $50\%$ of the time. This conjecture, whose broad generalization to the context of eta-quotients will be the topic of a subsequent paper, remains wide open.

Shift-Plethystic Trees and Rogers-Ramanujan Identitites
By studying non-commutative series in an infinite alphabet we introduce shift-plethystic trees and a class of integer compositions as new combinatorial models for the Rogers-Ramanujan identities. We prove that the language associated to shift-plethystic trees can be expressed as a non-commutative generalization of the Rogers-Ramanujan continued fraction. By specializing the noncommutative series to $q$-series we obtain new combinatorial interpretations to the Rogers-Ramanujan identities in terms of signed integer compositions. We introduce the operation of shift-plethysm on non-commutative series and use this to obtain interesting enumerative identities involving compositions and partitions related to Rogers-Ramanujan identities.

The saddle-point method for general partition functions
Published in Indag. Math. (N.S.) 31 (2020), 728-738 • View PublicationBIB
We apply the saddle-point method to derive asymptotic estimates or asymptotic series for the number of partitions of a natural integer into parts chosen from a subset of the positive integers whose associated Dirichlet series satisfies certain analytic properties. This enables grouping in a single statement many cases studied in the literature, as well as a number of new ones.
